Are you harnessing the power of a journal?

If you are going through life right now feeling like everything is out of control or that things are not happening the way you planned, you need a journal. I don’t mean to be too direct, but it is time for you to discover why you feel the way you do and then figure out what to do about it.

Or you can just write stuff in it! The great thing about a lined journal is you can make it into anything you want. A day timer, travel journal, diary, notebook for school, etc. If you need to write something down, a journal is the tool you need.

If you want to use it for more than just a notepad then keep reading.

Benefits Of Keeping A Journal

Almost every successful person seems to have kept a journal in one form or another. Success in this case is not defined by money but overall happiness. Whether or not they called it journaling doesn’t matter as they kept a record of their goals, success, failures, feelings and their daily life.

Your journal contains the answers to your most burning questions. It is literally the best self-help book you could ever read because it is all about you. Just some of the benefits of journaling are:

  • Allows you to reflect on your life and the changes you are choosing to make or not make
  • Clarifies your thinking and as Tony Robbins says “Clarity is Power”
  • Houses all your million dollar ideas that normally get lost in all the noise of life
  • Exposes repeated patterns of behaviors that get you the results you DON’T want
  • Acts as a bucket for you to brain dump in – a cluttered mind leads to a disorganized life
  • Revisits daily situations giving you a chance to look at it with a different perspective
  • Doesn’t crash and lose everything you put into it like electronics (just like electronics though don’t get it wet)

You may want to keep multiple journals. One that contains your truest and most secret feelings that you guard heavily, but need a way to express. Another that contains all those fantastic ideas, dreams and awesome goals. Maybe just something you doodle in.

No matter how you use it getting into the daily habit of journaling has the potential to improve the quality of your life.

How To Use A journal

Let’s look past the simple fact you know how to physically write in a journal and dig into how to actually use your journal. It might contain all the secrets to life’s biggest problems but unless you know how to uncover those secrets they stay hidden away in your words.

  • Let the words flow from the heart and be filled with emotions, no holdbacks
  • Make a daily journaling schedule. Each and every day take the time to record your thoughts morning and night. If you love to type notes into your phone all day transfer them to your journal after.
  • Sit in a quiet spot and allow yourself to be judgement free. Your journal is not a reason to turn yourself into an emotional punching bag.
  • Start small. You do not need to write a specific number of words. Just the right amount of honest words that let you feel a sense of being free from negativity and energized with possibility.
  • If you write in your journal like someone is going to read it, you will ever allow yourself to fully express what needs to be expressed. Write like no one will ever read it because it is likely no one ever will unless you want them to. Write how you loved something, were mad at someone, wished something was different or anything you need to.

Just do it. Start today writing in your journal. You could even put “Today I bought this awesome journal and will recommend all my friends do the same.” Wink Wink

It's very lightweight and fits perfectly in my purse for those days where my mind is racing and I'm wanting to jot some things down. I'm obsessed with the watercolor look so I may be a bit bias, but I would recommend getting this product and hey it makes a great stocking stuffer for Christmas!

Camp Granny: A Grandma's Bag of Tricks, by Sharon Lovejoy

Review Sharon Lovejoy calls this treasure trove of crafts, recipes and activities “a natural outgrowth of the way I have always lived and interacted with children.” Many of the ideas and projects originated from her journal notes and sketches. Who could resist a “Faeries’ Tea Party” where Heart- and Star-Shaped Faerie Sandwiches and Button Pie appear on the menu? Or building the title cottage for a toad and collecting leaves and flowers for a 3-D collage? More than 130 activities encourage an exploration of both the natural world and a child’s imagination. Clear instructions, illustration and abundant photos make each project inviting, and a list of “ingredients” makes them manageable. “The book is about unplugging from electronics and plugging into adventures, projects, discoveries and the simplest pleasures of childhood,” says Lovejoy, “watching shooting stars, following animal tracks, creating art, and keeping family history and traditions alive.” (Ages 6-10, adult) -Kirkus Reviews (Kirkus Reviews )

From the Back Cover Make leaf rubbings, blow jumbo bubbles, bake Moon Pizzas and Granny-ola in a handmade solar oven, grow a snack pot of radishes and carrots, create a firefly lantern, and on a rainy day make rainsticks. Illustrated with evocative photographs and the author’s watercolors, this magical book shows how to do 130 activities that connect grandmothers and grandchildren through nature—in the kitchen, the garden, and the art room. Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars is more than an activity book; it’s an interactivity book. It’s about being curious, about being adventurous, about noticing and really seeing things, about instilling a sense of wonder. Sprinkled throughout are Mrs. Lovejoy’s inventive grandparenting ideas that help make every visit a memorable one, filled with simple joys and discoveries that will have grandchildren coming back again and again.

About the Author Sharon Lovejoy, an author, illustrator, lecturer, and teacher, is the children's garden adviser to the American Horticultural Society, and has been a guest on Today at NBC, PBS's Victory Garden, and the Discovery Channel. She speaks at conferences and gardening organizations around the country. She has four grandchildren, and divides her time between San Luis Obispo, California, and South Bristol, Maine.

Creative Fun for Grannies & Grandkids By Story Circle Book Reviews If you're a grandma or a mom (or even a nature-loving, kid-daffy grandpa or dad), you're going to be delighted by Sharon Lovejoy's latest book, Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars. It is the ultimate Granny Handbook, designed especially for those of us who are lucky enough to have at least one small child to introduce to life in the kitchen, the backyard, and the garden.Sharon Lovejoy has always helped us to work with our kids in the garden, from her delightful Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots to Sunflower Houses; Hollyhock Days; and A Blessing of Toads. But Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars is special, because it is designed as a "manual" for grandmas, and Lovejoy has crammed it full of playful activities that even grannies without green thumbs can manage and kids will absolutely love. To whet your appetite, here is a short sampling from the six chapters: Faerie Mailboxes, Firefly Lanterns, No-Bake Nests, Be a Pumpkin Parent, Potato Volcanoes, and Worm Hotel.Want more? How about these chapter titles? Preparing Camp Granny (lots of fine ideas, even if you're a long-distance granny). Or The Neighborhood Naturalist, Kids in the Kitchen, the Kitchen Garbage Garden (starts with an activity called "Learning from Leftovers"), Kids in the Garden, and Rainy Day Activities. Each chapter offers recipes (Moon Pizzas, anybody?), games, and activities--each one a learning opportunity for both granny and grandkid. And best of all, the book overflows with color photographs and Lovejoy's delightful drawings of bugs, plants, food toys, and faeries. Every page is a treasure. In her introduction, Lovejoy notes that being a grandmother is "one of the truest and purest joys" of her life, for her grandchildren have given her the gift of "child-sight": "the ability to stop, hunker down, and see things through their fresh, young eyes and minds." In Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars, Lovejoy shares that gift with her readers, through her playful art and the creative, imaginative activities she suggests. "Grandmotherhood is a state of grace," she says, a place of wonder and child-like delight. Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars will help you and your lucky grandchildren find that place and enjoy it--together.by Susan Wittig Albertfor Story Circle Book Reviewsreviewing books by, for, and about women

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Best for Active, Outdorsey Grandparents By Ms Margaret Sharon Lovejoy is my ideal grandmother. She spends time browsing craft stores and home centers for child-friendly materials. She readies her house for her grandchildren's visits by setting up "camp granny" - stocking rooms with dress-up clothes, children's books, and child-friendly activities. She maintains an active and creative line of communication with long-distance grandkids. And she relishes nature walks and garden experiments with little ones. If only more grandparents were like her...My own mother isn't and if yours is more couch-potato than amateur naturalist then this book won't change that. I'm giving my mom this book because I found it second-hand, asked her if she wanted it, and she replied casually "yes" without questioning what exactly what it was. I'm pretty sure that after I give it to her and she has had time to look it over in the privacy of her own home (if she even gets that far) she'll say "well, I'm not doing any of these activities because they're too much work" and proceed to use the TV as a babysitter if I leave my children in her care.Who should buy this book: Grandmothers or grandfathers (these activities really aren't gender-specific) looking for ways to enjoy time with their grandkids over the age of 5 (a 2-year-old who has to be watched like a hawk so she won't slice her hand open with pinking shears is a totally different animal than a 7-year-old who knows not to eat toadstools) in the garden and in the kitchen. It also helps if the grandparent in question is in good health, is free of mobility issues, and has a sizable garden (though many of the plant activities can be done indoors).Who should NOT buy this book: People hoping to transform lazy, unimaginative, or infirm grandparents into elderly Mary Poppins. It takes time and effort to make a solar oven or gather materials for sprouting peanuts or creating a memory book with a child. I happen to think that time and effort would be well-spent, but most people unwilling to seek out a book like this for themselves probably wouldn't want to devote hours of planning to a fairy tea party activity. So please think long and hard before giving this book as a gift.I will admit that I'm keeping a copy of this book for myself. I have a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old and I really think my kids will enjoy many of these activities when they get a little older. The layout, pictures, and directions here are enticing and clear enough that we could simply use it as an all-purpose activity kit. Reading parts of this book have also led me to think about what kind of parent and what kind of grandparent I want to be. We all have times when we need a break from the exhausting job of caring for children; but as this book makes clear, our time with children is limited, they grow up so fast, and expending energy being fun and creative can only make for happy memories and a closer long-term relationship.

Excerpt from Rural Denmark and Its LessonsIn collecting the material for this book its author followed the method of actually inspecting Danish farms of various sizes, and taking careful notes on the spot of what he saw and heard. The results recorded in these pages may therefore be accepted as accurate to the best of his knowledge and belief. In the same way he interviewed personally the different authorities whose opinions he has quoted. As most of this work, however, was of necessity done by the help of an interpreter, it is possible that errors, consequent on misunderstandings, may have crept in here and there, and for such errors, if any, he apologises in advance. Further, the fact that all money standards, temperatures, weights, measures, &c., required rendering into their English equivalents, which are not always easy to arrive at, opens a door to possible mistakes. Lastly, some names may occasionally have been misspelt, although he has done his best to avoid such blunders.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. White Because the best way to learn about about two cultures at once is to read one of them talking about the other. Better, our writer here is none other than H. Rider Haggard. Yup, "King Solomon's Mines", "She," and so on. In his old age, he retired from South Africa to England and became a farmer -- a fairly serious one. He went to Denmark in about 1909 to study Danish Cooperative (all 5 syllables enunciated distinctly) methods, and this book is his report. I read it due to the lack of English language materials on early 20th century Danish history, but wound up learning far more about rural English attitudes and economics than about Danish cooperatives. The book should also be of much use to scholars of pre-WWI English writers. It is really *that* good in revealing their attitudes and prejudices. Recall that Haggard had been a colonial administrator in South Africa, so he more or less epitomizes all the best and worst of fin de siecle Englishmen outside the London set. And -- oh yes -- you might pick up a little about Danish history.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A fun read for kids and jam-packed with good information. By Janice Green This book was so fun to read. It includes many dog breeds that are the most popular for children and includes lots of fun information about each breed - like famous dogs such as Snoopy, a Beagle; and Lassie, a Collie; and Lady from the movie Lady and the Tramp who was a Cocker Spaniel. The book tells where each of the breeds came from and gives ways they help people today. It also gives information that would be helpful on deciding which breed might be better for older children and which are OK for the very young.I was once an elementary school librarian. If I still had a school library, this book would certainly be on my library shelves where I know it would get checked out often. I can also see it as a coffee table book for a dog-loving family with children.

When I came across this book by Heide Bine-Stock and illustrated by Jean Batzell Fitzgerald it struck me as a very helpful and attractive presentation of the great variety of dog breeds and their special characteristics in a way that would capture the interest of a youngster. The colored photographs of each breed are excellent and the background artwork for each picture is especially pleasing and appropriate as an extra touch to appeal to a child's imagination and create a unique setting for the photograph of each breed. I think this book does an excellent job as a basic primer for young minds, and even their parents, to form an initial attraction to this or that breed of dog that could help to a better informed choice of one as a pet.

Excerpt from The Compleat Cladist: A Primer of Phylogenetic ProceduresIn writing this workbook, we have strived to follow in the tradition of Brooks et al. (1984) of providing a guide to basic phylogenetic techniques as we now understand them. The field of phylogenetics has undergone many changes, some philosophical and some empirical, in the last 10 years. We hope to reflect some of these changes in this workbook. The workbook is arranged in a manner roughly functional and pedagogical. The sophisticated reader, for example, might question why we spend so much time with exercises (in Chapter 2) that do not really reflect the way real phylogenetic analysis is performed or why so much space is given to Hennig Argumentation and Wagner algorithms (Chapter 4) when they are either not a part of modem computer algorithms or, at best, are only a starting point for finding the best hypothesis of common ancestry for the particular data analyzed. Our answer, perhaps constrained by our own histories, is that this approach seems to help at least some students learn phylogenetics.Because we can only touch on the most basic topics and provide exercises for only a few of these, we invite the student to explore the original literature; we have cited sources in the body of the text and called attention to some papers in the Chapter Notes and References sections at the end of each chapter. The absence of a paper in the text or in the Notes section is no reflection on the worth of the paper. A compilation of all of the useful papers relating to phylogenetics is quite beyond the scope of this workbook. In addition to the exercises, we have provided immediate feedback sections termed Quick Quizzes. We are interested in reader opinion regarding both the exercises and the quick quizzes. We will incorporate suggestions, wherever possible, in subsequent editions. The major title. The Compleat Cladist. is inspired by the title The Compleat Angler by Izaak Walton, a marvelous book published in many editions since 1653. Of course, this book is not complete or even compleat in the archaic sense of representing a book that teaches complete mastery of a subject. Phylogenetics is much too dynamic for a small workbook to fulfill that criterion. Rather, we take our inspiration from Walton; the compleat cladist is one who approaches the subject with energy, wonder, and joy. Unfortunately, none of us are clever enough to come up with an analogy to the Anglers Song.We thank the following people for their valuable comments on part or all of the earlier drafts of this workbook: the students of Biology 864 and Mike Bamshad (University of Kansas), John Hayden (University of Richmond), Debbie McLennan (University of Toronto), David Swofford (Illinois Natural History Survey), Charlotte Taylor, Richard Thomas, and Rafael Joglar (University of Puerto Rico), Wayne Maddison (Harvard University), and Arnold Kluge (University of Michigan).About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By A Customer This is a great book; it offers an outstanding intro to cladistics, or phylogenetic systematics. I knew this was a great book before I even got it. At the 2003 annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, some prominent paleontologists pointed out that this book may be downloaded legally for free (!) at the following address:[...]Why is it free? Because the folks at KU know how intellectually valuable this document is, not to mention how difficult it may be to come by.This isn't a permanent offer; the link will only be valid until the Second Edition is published. The Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible encourages readers to explore how the vital roots of the ancient Christian tradition should inform and shape faithfulness today. In this addition to the series, highly acclaimed author, speaker, and theologian Robert Barron offers a theological exegesis of 2 Samuel. He highlights three major themes: God's non-competitive transcendence, the play between divine and non-divine causality, and the role of Old Testament kingship. As with other volumes in the series, this book is ideal for those called to ministry, serving as a rich resource for preachers, teachers, students, and study groups.

2 Samuel (Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible), by Robert Barron

From the Inside Flap Praise for 2 Samuel in the Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible"In this impressive example of theological exegesis, Robert Barron shows that he is both an outstanding theologian and a masterful interpreter of scripture. The unforgettable narrative of the rise and fall of King David springs to life in Barron's hands. Along the way, he demonstrates that the book of 2 Samuel is not just a literary masterpiece but an essential bridge between the Old and New Testaments."--Brant Pitre, Notre Dame Seminary; author of Jesus the Bridegroom"Robert Barron is one of the clearest and most compelling Christian communicators I know. He is a scholar, yet he relates easily to all the faithful. As a preacher he reaches both mind and heart. Now, in this major biblical commentary, he has given us a book that measures up to the standard already established by this excellent series. The story of 2 Samuel 'lives and breathes' in Barron's words."--John H. Armstrong, ACT3 Network, Carol Stream, IllinoisPraise for previous volumes in the Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible"Many commentaries exhibit a strange doubleness. On technical points they are sharp and decisive; on large questions they are evasive. Not Francesca Aran Murphy's 1 Samuel. . . . Murphy is almost belligerently forthright in laying out her interpretations, making her book a delightful read even when one disagrees. And whereas typical commentary is written with all the verve of an instruction manual, Murphy's prose is fresh, witty, at times exuberant--not to draw attention to itself, but in mimetic homage to the richness of the text."--John Wilson, Christianity Today"This unique commentary series interprets the biblical text from a theological perspective in order to open up new vistas of meaning. . . . As a literary critic who is also attuned to biblical interpretation [David Lyle Jeffrey] brings a special quality to this task [in Luke]. His approach is to read Luke's gospel in the company of previous interpreters, ancient and modern. The end result is a beautiful exposition of Luke, blending in patristic comments and snatches of poetry along with medieval and modern interpretations of individual passages in the Gospel."--Donald Senior, CP, The Bible Today|Robert Barron (STD, Institut Catholique de Paris) is rector of Mundelein Seminary and president of the University of St. Mary of the Lake. From the Back Cover The Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible enlists leading theologians to read and interpret scripture creedally for the twenty-first century, just as the church fathers, the Reformers, and other orthodox Christians did for their times and places. 2 Samuel, like each commentary in the series, is designed to serve the church and demonstrate the continuing intellectual and practical viability of theological interpretation of the Bible."Robert Barron is a great teacher of the Church and a gifted biblical commentator who breaks open the Word of God for our day as Ambrose and Augustine did for theirs."--George Weigel, Ethics and Public Policy Center"In this book, Barron brings his theological erudition to the task of interpreting sacred scripture. The result will be a delight for all his readers. Not only will they relish the many profundities of the text, but they will be able to join the author in wrestling with its various conundrums. Even the challenging parts of David's life are handled in fresh, creative, and--most important--productive ways."--Gary Anderson, University of Notre Dame"Robert Barron has written a beautiful commentary on 2 Samuel, and it will be a tribute to the series. He has a keen sense of the subtlety of the narrative and the imagination to draw theological and spiritual meaning from particulars. Yet he is neither doctrinaire nor heavy-handed; his interpretations always grow out of the story and do not become theological disquisitions. Barron writes well, and this commentary is a pleasure to read. Even serious readers of the Bible will delight in the surprising things he discerns in the narrative."--Robert Louis Wilken, University of VirginiaGeneral editor: R. R. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Excellent and enlightening commentary on 2 Samuel By Stuart Dunn Fr. Robert Barron, the author of the commentary on 2 Samuel, needs no introduction. He has reached celebrity status in more than the Catholic realm. Through the use of breathtaking videos and popular culture references, he has made the Catholic faith understandable, accessible, and approachable to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. One cannot ignore the fact that he is actually a brilliant theological mind, which he puts on display in this commentary of the often forgotten Old Testament book - 2 Samuel. Fr. Barron's commentary style is not verse-by-verse, where he analyzes every word for meaning. Instead, he focuses on five overall themes found in the book of 2 Samuel and how each chapter displays the particular theme. The themes are as follows:1. David Comes to Power2. Priest and King3. David and Bathsheba4. A Sword Will Never Leave Your Home5. Toward the TempleWhile reading this commentary, I was enlightened so much on what I had misread or just glossed over in my past reading of 2 Samuel. Fr. Barron does an excellent job of explaining terminology and phraseology that would have been used for the time, and in doing so, the passages actually started to make sense. He also does a nice job of explaining difficult to understand passages. For example, I always wondered why it was such a sin for David to take a census of the people. Fr. Barron explains that it is the act of a tyrannical king looking to reassure himself of his might and power. The most interesting chapter to me was Chapter 11 where David's story completely turned around with Bathsheba. In this chapter, he explains the sin of David and the shrewdness of Bathsheba. In this chapter, I learned that I had been completely blaming David for what happened and painting Bathsheba as innocent victim. This is not the case. The only victim in all of this was Uriah who was everything David should have been. After reading through this commentary, I have a greater understanding of the book of 2 Samuel. It is not just some dry historical text, but a deep and beautifully written work that touches on the idea of priesthood; kingship; bad fathering and bad kingship; and the noncompetitive transcendence of God. Fr. Barron explains all of this and more in a manner that is appropriately profound yet easily understood. There are Catholic references in this volume as well as patristic references (like St. John Chrysostom), but it is not just a commentary for Catholics. I honestly wish he would have worked on both 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel in this series, but I guess I will have to buy 1 Samuel and see how the style and scholarship compares to this work. If you are looking for an excellent commentary on 2 Samuel, this one is 5 stars!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is a commentary that I enjoyed and stayed up late at night chewing through By A. Haake Very readable. Very practical. Not dry. Written by a man of faith. This is a commentary that I enjoyed and stayed up late at night chewing through. How Barron developed the parallels between David/Israel and Adam/Garden were appreciated. As I finished the commentary, I feel as if the trials and the life of David as presented in this commentary have reached into my heart... couldn't have asked for more.

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. WOW! By Craig Roberts Amazing insights and reflections on some very complicated material. Too many biblical commentaries sound like they are trying to sugar coat the bible. They make excuses for atrocities and gloss over stories and passages that are outrageous to the modern ear. Not Father Barron. He explores the text from a remarkably objective viewpoint illuminating facets from every angle. He also adds insights from modern theologians and founding fathers of the faith. He's not afraid to point out some of the most horrifying aspects of the text and even the bizarre implications that may lead us to question what we really think and know about the mysteries of the bible. He also (at least attempts) to tie the stories in with the big picture in a way that very few biblical commentaries ever get around to. And just when you think you've got it all figured out, he'll turn over some tiny rock to expose a detail that threatens to turn the whole view upside down. This makes for a fascinating mystery tour that is exciting and applicable to the rest of the bible and the faith as a whole.Bottom line for me: Father Barron has managed to make a very awkward, confusing, and formally painful, book of the bible fun.

Monarch butterflies are among the most popular insect species in the world and are an icon for conservation groups and environmental education programs. Monarch caterpillars and adults are easily recognizable as welcome visitors to gardens in North America and beyond, and their spectacular migration in eastern North America (from breeding locations in Canada and the United States to overwintering sites in Mexico) has captured the imagination of the public.

Monarch migration, behavior, and chemical ecology have been studied for decades. Yet many aspects of monarch biology have come to light in only the past few years. These aspects include questions regarding large-scale trends in monarch population sizes, monarch interactions with pathogens and insect predators, and monarch molecular genetics and large-scale evolution. A growing number of current research findings build on the observations of citizen scientists, who monitor monarch migration, reproduction, survival, and disease. Monarchs face new threats from humans as they navigate a changing landscape marked by deforestation, pesticides, genetically modified crops, and a changing climate, all of which place the future of monarchs and their amazing migration in peril.

To meet the demand for a timely synthesis of monarch biology, conservation and outreach, Monarchs in a Changing World summarizes recent developments in scientific research, highlights challenges and responses to threats to monarch conservation, and showcases the many ways that monarchs are used in citizen science programs, outreach, and education. It examines issues pertaining to the eastern and western North American migratory populations, as well as to monarchs in South America, the Pacific and Caribbean Islands, and Europe. The target audience includes entomologists, population biologists, conservation policymakers, and K–12 teachers.

Monarchs in a Changing World: Biology and Conservation of an Iconic ButterflyFrom Comstock Publishing Associates

Review

"Monarch butterflies, by being so familiar to so many, provide an immediate connection between readers and research. That connection can overcome the small patches of difficult prose. With 926 citations of scientific papers and a 463-entry index, this book will help advance thework of established researchers and give others an awareness of the breadth and limits of the knowledge of the monarch butterfly." ―G.C. Stevens,Choice(November 2015)

"Few other species capture the imagination and provide fodder for knowledge and innovation like the monarch. Monarchs in a Changing World is a beautiful illustration of both."―Jessica Hellmann, University of Notre Dame

"Monarchs in a Changing World summarizes work that reinforces, extends, and ameliorates our understanding of the biology of the monarch butterfly, with a particular focus on key research, conservation, and outreach efforts that aim to preserve this species, its range and habitats, and its awe-inspiring long-distance migration in eastern North America. This book presents a variety of interesting and thought-provoking topics to readers. They range from studies on the population dynamics and ecology of monarchs in different areas around the globe to current and ongoing conservation and management efforts that span personal, local, state, national, and international boundaries. This book will serve as the key resource for those people interested in using monarch butterflies as a model organism in citizen science, science literacy, and environmental education programs."―Steven M. Reppert, MD, Distinguished Professor of Neurobiology and Higgins Family Professor of Neuroscience, University of Massachusetts Medical School

Excellent Scholary Text on Monarchs By atavism This book is an excellent compilation of never before published original research and review papers about the current state of the monarch butterfly and monarch science. It is definitely a scholarly work, intended for scientists and other monarch professionals (educators especially), but highly knowledgeable monarch enthusiasts will also find it interesting. The introduction of the book states quite clearly that it does not provide an overview of the basics of monarch biology and migration, so if that is what you are looking for, you'll need to look elsewhere. People looking for a more advanced understanding of present and potential future monarch research will definitely benefit from this text. The book contains 24 chapters, divided into the following sections:-Model Programs for Citizen Science, Education, and Conservation-Monarchs as Herbivores, Prey, and Hosts-Monarchs in a Changing Climate-Conserving North American Monarch Butterflies-New Perspectives on Monarch Migration, Evolution, and Population Biology. While each chapter is written by a different group of authors, I found them all to be well organized and clearly written. I thought that I had been staying fairly up-to-date on monarch biology, but I was still able to learn a great deal from this text! Most of the tables and figures were clear (and there were some beautiful color photographs), but my one qualm with the book was the black and white photos. I found some of them too dark and too small to make out clearly what the authors wanted to depict. Fortunately, there were not many black and white photos in the book, so it didn't greatly impact my reading experience. All told, I would definitely recommend this to all monarch professionals and advanced monarch enthusiasts.

Dr. Oberhauser is a national treasure and a great source of wisdom on the subject. I might mention that it would probably be easier reading for someone familiar with the issuer sarong monarch life cycles and migration.

Helpful for the General class exam, but there are opportunities for improvement By Jim Carson The spiral version as it's a LOT easier to manage on the bus commute, where I've done most of my studying for the exam. I've supplemented practice with an iPad app that quizzes me on a random selection of 35 questions. After a few runs of the app, I've identified areas where I need to bone up and have done so with the book. Although this edition of the book is for the question bank that begins July 1st, the basic principles have not changed materially from the soon-to-expire exam. I'm pretty confident I'm going to pass the exam on Monday without a problem. On that metric -- helping me with the test -- this book is fine.I am less enthusiastic about over-presentation of material that distracts from clarity of understanding. For example, in the front of the book (1-2, repeated half-size on 3-7) is a Frequency Allocation Chart (also available on their web site) with a diagram of the bands, frequencies and modes. Because it's the generic diagram, it includes a lot of superfluous information such as the restrictions for Novice and Advanced licenses -- both deprecated in 2000, as well as changes enacted a couple of years ago. As a result, the chart is dense and less useful than it could be in this setting. It would have been super helpful if they included ONLY the information pertinent to General privileges. With the extra room, they could add supplemental information relevant to several of the questions on the exam: power restrictions, sideband use, and relative position of data vs voice.

After 3 weeks of casual study I passed the Technician, General, and Extra in one setting. I copied and then went through the pool of test questions included in the back of each book with a highlighter. Blue for the questions I 100% knew, green for the questions that I got with a little intuition (guessing not allowed), and yellow for the questions I did not understand. Each question in the pool has the section and page number listed making it easy to refer back to the section for further study. I went through all of my "greens" and then the "yellows" reading the relevant sections. Using this process with a clean copy of the pool questions I got to mostly "blue" and a couple of "greens"...and easily passed the three test. I also took the practice tests on the ARRL and the AA9PW dot com web sites.

When the great environmental writer Edward Abbey died in 1989, four of his friends buried him secretly in a hidden desert spot that no one would ever find. The final resting place of the Thoreau of the American West remains unknown and has become part of American folklore. In this book a young writer who went looking for Abbey's grave combines an account of his quest with a creative biography of Abbey.

Sean Prentiss takes readers across the country as he gathers clues from his research, travel, and interviews with some of Abbey's closest friends--including Jack Loeffler, Ken "Seldom Seen" Sleight, David Petersen, and Doug Peacock. Along the way, Prentiss examines his own sense of rootlessness as he attempts to unravel Abbey's complicated legacy, raising larger questions about the meaning of place and home.

Finding Abbey: The Search for Edward Abbey and His Hidden Desert Grave, by Sean Prentiss

Review "Finding Abbey is philosophical, poetic, a creative biography and a loving, evocative celebration of a controversial life."--Shelf Awareness"Readers will find something to envy in Prentiss's exploration. While having all the makings of an expertly researched piece of narrative journalism, Prentiss also turns the magnifying glass on himself. What is most commendable about Finding Abbey is [Prentiss's] willingness to go the distance and explore, to think deeply about one of modern America's most outspoken critics, and to inspire others to look for what [Prentiss] rightfully calls 'a life worth living.'"--Vermont Sports Magazine"Even for readers unfamiliar with Abbey or his writings, Finding Abbey's insights into this problematic man are compelling."--Seven Days"[Prentiss] locates and interviews Abbey's inner circle of friends, and in these faithfully recorded scenes his book . . . catches fire--including a conversation with Doug Peacock, the ex-Green Beret model for Abbey's monkey-wrenching Hayduke, who in real life keeps a .357 Magnum by his side. The final chapters of Mr. Prentiss's quest are suspenseful and winning. . . . Finding Abbey is a touching book."--Wall Street Journal"[Finding Abbey] brings us on a fascinating journey. Prentiss is especially able to describe in evocative detail the feeling of mountains and deserts and plains. He gives us an essence of the maddening, fiery, outspoken personality of Edward Abbey."--The Hardwick Gazette"What's best about Sean Prentiss's [Finding Abbey] . . . is that the author loves and understands what made Southwest writer Edward Abbey tick, why Abbey's writing is so resonant and why he was--and still is--so important."--Durango Herald"Prentiss successfully demonstrates his ability to write an intriguing and compelling story that simultaneously informs, inspires, and entertains. His vivid imagery and unique interviewing style adds depth and passion to his search, resulting in an exceptional narrative that flows smoothly and conveys his admiration for Abbey and the American West. Finding Abbey is a journey well worth taking."--Foreword Reviews"A worthy contribution to the Abbey canon. . . . Highly recommended for all interested in the American Southwest, environmentalism, and modern literature."--Library Journal"Prentiss offers fine, thoughtful readings of Abbey's writing, and he applies it judiciously to his life and ours."--Kirkus Reviews"The significance of Abbey in Prentiss's own life is revealed through precise but emotional prose. The effect is both grounding and electrifying."--Weekly Alibi"Prentiss reveals the power of Ed Abbey's lasting call to action, not just as a Monkey Wrencher, but also as an ethicist who lives by Ed's own motto, 'Follow the truth no matter where it leads.'"--Jack Loeffler, author of Adventures with Ed: A Portrait of Abbey"In Finding Abbey, author Sean Prentiss presents us at once with an intriguing shotgun overview of the late southwestern literary cult hero Edward Abbey's life and work, interspersed with an intriguingly unfolding chronicle of Prentiss's own search for direction, meaning, and art in life. And best of all--what Abbey would like best--this book has soul. The somewhat sensational title, by the way, is merely metaphorical. Or is it?"--David Petersen, editor of Confessions of a Barbarian: Selections from the Journals of Edward Abbey

By Cactus Ed As a lifelong fan of Edward Abbey I have collected all of his books, as well as many articles and biographies over the years. I think the last book Abbey-related was a collection of his Letters ( entitled Postcards From Ed ), published in 2006. So it's been a while since we've had anything new about Cactus Ed!Now Sean Prentiss has given us a great new story about his search for Edward Abbey. Not, as the book's subtitle implies, just a search for Abbey's hidden grave somewhere in the desert southwest, but a search covering his entire life, from Ed's roots in Pennsylvania to all the places he called home in between. This search took Prentiss a fair amount of time and covered a lot of miles. Prentiss takes the reader places Ed's earlier biographers didn't go, places I would have loved to visit if only I had the time. It was a pleasure to travel with Sean in this book. A real pleasure. This is an intimate, well-written book that any and every fan of Edward Abbey will enjoy immensely. I know I did!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Finding Abbey is the work of a wannabe By Mary Sojourner "a little wiggle dance" - I found this book sophomoric in the extreme. I was a friend and student and co-worker of Edward Abbey. He wanted his grave hidden. And, as for all the sycophants and hangers-on, especially those who've published books about him, he would have written a scathing few lines about them - if that. Ed Abbey was, in all the finest and the worst ways, just a person.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Like many Abbey admirers By Shane Griffin He’s the father of the modern environmental movement, the Thoreau of the West, the inspiration for Earth First!, he’s Edward Abbey. Edward Abbey died in 1989 and he was buried somewhere in the American Southwest. His friends, at Abbey’s request, took him from the hospital to allow him to die the way he wanted to—in the high desert of Arizona surrounded by his closest friends who gave him an illegal burial and vowed to keep the location of his grave a secret. Like many Abbey admirers, I have often wondered where his final resting place is. I discovered Abbey’s works after his death, and I have come to listen and, I mean really listen, to his words and I have made them my own environmental commandment, and where I make my stand. But I too wonder about his grave and the mystery associated with it adds to the benevolence of Abbey. He is larger than life. I carry his texts like a guidebook on my own environmental activist journey. If any of you had ever read Abbey, you know him to be a hypocrite, a kind man, but a man who spoke the truth—the truth about himself. In an age where everyone is fake and tries so hard to please everybody else, Abbey did not. This added to the complexity of the man and his anarchist beliefs. Bear no allegiance to nobody, except yourself, stand upright. Stand up for who you are and bear down to fight those who stand against you. Sean Prentiss is an Abbey follower. He has been haunted with Abbey’s words for most of his life and somehow or for some reason, he has sought the location of his grave, trying to get into the inner circle of Abbey’s closest friends. Prentiss has some good passages and he has made me want to go on the journey into the Cabreza Prieta to look and search for the Master’s final resting place. But Sean is a lost soul, such as myself, I am lost because things just don’t seem right to me in this age where everything mechanized and globalized. I have wondered myself if this is the disaster that Abbey had talked about and warned to avoid. I am also jealous, that Prentiss had interviews with Abbeys closest friends, Jack Loeffler, Ken Sleight, Dave Peterson, and Doug Peacock. I would like to sit down with each one of them and just talk about Ed. I do not have the ambition, nor the need to seek out the grave of Edward Abbey, but Sean Prentiss, thought it would be a good idea. He seemed lost, like most of us had, who had live in the West and have been mesmerized by the geology, the feeling that man is a mere blip on the radar of earth’s trajectory while standing in the shadow of a half-lit canyon looking up at the snow covered peaks. Prentiss is a displaced Western romantic, as am I, but he has gone beyond what I have thought about doing to find Abbey’s grave, he has actually sought it out and claims to have found it. I can say that the mystery of Abbey is knowing that I don’t want to find his grave, that he is alive in the spirit of the American Southwest and that is all that I need to know. There are some great passages in the book, as Prentiss himself comes to realization that the American Southwest is Abbey country and the great author’s spirit is everywhere. We stand in the back of beyond, beyond the wall, where fire is on the mountain, where brave cowboys still ride, journeying home down the river, in the solitary desert, in the hidden canyon where Seldom Seen and Hayduke still live, where good news is still sung, where one man can share his soliloquy, his voice crying in the wilderness. That passage summed up Abbey for me, and I didn’t care at that point if Prentiss and his noble friend Haus found Abbey’s grave. But they claimed they did, and apparently there is a tombstone there with the last Abbey quote, “No Comment.” I refuse to believe this. I believe that Abbey didn’t want to disrupt the natural landscape, that he wanted to be the landscape, the buzzard on patrol high in the sky, the mountain lion in shadows, and the desert rivers running free forever. I am not sure if Prentiss found Abbey’s grave, I would like to think that he did not, that maybe he contributed his own monkey wrenching by sending many more lost Abbey followers in to the Southwest in search of answers, when all that they have to do to find answers is to look around them, the spirit of the great Abbey is everywhere. He is in the struggle against corporate greed, urban expansion, industrialization, and he is the light in the setting sun, the warmth when all that the world feels is a cold draft coming from their corporate leaders. If I found Abbey’s grave and it did in fact have a tombstone, I would deface this great man’s grave and throw the stone into the nearest arroyo in the Cabreza Prieta and bury it. Because that is truly what I think he would want. In his death, Abbey is not a man, but a place, he is the environmental philosophy, the land ethic that Leopold championed. Prentiss leads the Abbeyites to no closer of an end than they thought when they started this book. He believes he is part of the inner circle, when really he is not. There is only one Edward Abbey and there will be no other. This book is nothing more than a post-adolescent exploration of a man tired of this world, who lives on through the work he left behind and the quiet heat of the calm desert. I leave you with a quote that Edward Abbey gave as a benediction during a speech he gave in Utah. May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. May your rivers flow without end. Meandering through pastoral valleys tinkling with bells, past temples and castles and poets’ towers into a dark primeval forest where tigers belch and monkeys howl, through miasmal and mysterious swamps infested with crocodiles and down into a desert of red rock, blue mesas, domes and pinnacles and grottos of endless stone, and down, down again into a deep vast ancient unknown chasm where bars of sunlight blaze on profiled cliffs, where deer walk across the white sand beaches, where storms come and go as lightning clangs upon the high crops, where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than you deepest dreams waits for you beyond the next turning of the canyon walls. That is where Abbey lives. In the words that he gave us and the imagination and the courage to stand up for what we all believe in, but are afraid to make a stand.
