Serenity is a good thing - coloring these designs are relaxing and creative By BellaBella by the sea ~~~ A new series by the same author and colorist of the five volumes of the Equilibrium series. These are a little different. To my eye, they are more of a mandalas in the shape and form of snowflake or flower designs. These designs can be colored within the lined borders leaving the larger areas uncolored or colored with lighter hues. Or the larger areas can be colored in leaving the bordered lines uncolored or colored with lighter hues. Or both! The choices of our colors bring a whole creative look that is unique and one of a kind.Three Star: The only thing I personally did not care for was the printing resolution. To my eye, it is quite blurry. Maybe it was meant to be like this, but I'm picky when it comes to lines that do not have a crisp printing resolution. I've placed some examples here and the reader can decide for themselves whether this is an issue or not.Otherwise, here are the other particulars to consider:~ 8.5" x 8.5" book~ 100 mandalas in round snowflake or flower like designs~ 6.5" designs~ unbordered pages~ single sided printed~ back page is blank~ fair quality paper, conducive more for coloring pencils; any alcohol or gel marker will readily bleed through~ lots of variety within the book, no repeats~ this is a bound book, pages are not perforated for easy removal to share around the coloring table or frame~ printed well away from binding for cutting out with paper craft knifeI really like these kinds of designs and am enjoying coloring them. Since this is titled Simplistic Serenity #1, I am hoping there will be another volume to follow.

From gang- and drug-related shootings to mass shootings in schools, shopping centers, and movie theatres, reports of gun crimes fill the headlines of newspapers and nightly news programs. At the same time, a different kind of headline has captured public attention: a steady surge in pro-gun sentiment among Americans. A Gallup poll conducted just a month after the Newtown school shootings found that 74% of Americans oppose a ban on hand-guns, and at least 11 million people now have licenses to carry concealed weapons as part of their everyday lives. Why do so many Americans not only own guns but also carry them?In Citizen-Protectors, Jennifer Carlson offers a compelling portrait of gun carriers, shedding light on Americans' complex relationship with guns. Delving headlong into the world of gun carriers, Carlson spent time participating in firearms training classes, attending pro-gun events, and carrying a firearm herself. Through these experiences she explores the role guns play in the lives of Americans who carry them and shows how, against a backdrop of economic insecurity and social instability, gun carrying becomes a means of being a good citizen, an idea that not only pervades the NRA's public literature and statements, but its training courses as well. A much-needed counterpoint to the rhetorical battles over gun control, Citizen-Protectors is a captivating and revealing look at gun culture in America, and is a must-read for anyone with a stake in this heated debate.

Citizen-Protectors: The Everyday Politics of Guns in an Age of Decline, by Jennifer Carlson

Review "In this insightful, often eye-popping study, Jennifer Carlson describes how millions of Americans have come to view carrying of concealed guns in public as a civic obligation - and to regard killing in self-defense as a moral act. Whether you embrace these views or find them repugnant, the study will force you to grapple with uncomfortable questions about the role of the state vs. the individual in maintaining public order." --Kristin A. Goss, Duke University, and co-author of The Gun Debate: What Everyone Needs to Know®

"Carlson's study is the first to take gun carriers seriously as social subjects, a breakthrough in our national discussion of guns, law, and society." --Jonathan Simon, University of California, Berkeley

"In this riveting and reflexive ethnography, Jennifer Carlson locks, loads, and fires a nuanced argument about how guns are used to address problems of social, economic, and physical insecurities in the United States. The findings compel the reader to reflect on the ubiquitous and embodied American culture of self-reliance, racialized criminalization, and vigilantism." --Victor Rios, University of California, Santa Barbara and author of Punished

"... a timely, well-written, jargon-free, nuanced book on why millions of Americans carry guns and view themselves as models of good citizenship... Gun supporters and gun opponents will be challenged by this sophisticated work." --CHOICE

About the Author Jennifer Carlson is an American sociologist at the University of Toronto. She is an authority on the issue of guns, and has written widely on the topic, including in the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Christian Science Monitor.

Must-read book on an issue that gets more important every day By David Yamane The liberalization of laws allowing people to get permits to carry concealed weapons in public is one of the most significant changes in American society in the past 30 years. It would surely surprise many to know that 3-4 out of every 100 adult citizens in the United States is potentially legally armed in public by virtue of these concealed carry permits. Much has been written about this phenomenon by advocates on both sides of the gun debates. Here, for the first time, we have a book length treatment of private citizens (i.e., not LEOs, security, military) who choose to legally carry guns and why they do so. Basing her study on interviews with male gun carriers (legally open and concealed) in the Detroit metro area, observations of firearms training, shooting ranges, and activist events, and her own experience of carrying a gun in pubic, Carlson begins her explanation on the ground, so to speak. She tries (and in my view succeeds) in understanding why the decision to carry a gun in public makes sense to those who do so.As a sociologist, Carlson also puts that individual decision in a broader social context. She explains the decision to carry a gun as a response to a very broad pattern of socio-economic decline, the feelings of economic and physical insecurity it produces, and related concerns about crime and police ineffectiveness. Carlson sees gun carrying as being strongly connected for men to their cultural conceptions of masculinity. The “age of decline” Carlson identifies in the book's title has affected men in particular and their role as breadwinners, so male gun carriers reassert their relevance as men by identifying themselves as “citizen-protectors” (her term, not theirs). With the term "citizen-protectors" Carlson highlights the cultural ideal of personal responsibility and connects it to a broader conception of citizenship among gun carriers. Gun carriers as citizen-protectors are morally upstanding citizens exercising their historically masculine duty to protect their families and others.Full disclosure: I read and commented on an early draft of this book and received a pre-publication copy from Oxford University Press. But I just paid for this book myself, not because I think it is perfect, but because the issue is important and getting more so all the time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. And that’s a good thing. This book is a refreshing look at ... By Ron This isn’t the book for sharpening your gun rights versus gun control debate. And that’s a good thing. This book is a refreshing look at guns in America in a completely different and thought proven way. Her premise is the post industrialized economy has led to males from all races and socioeconomic backgrounds embracing gun ownership to reclaim their masculine role in the family and society. Instead of debating whether we have too many guns in America, the author interviews a cross section of men and women who discuss the role guns play in their lives. To the author’s credit, she dives into this gun culture by not only taking a concealed carry class, but getting her permit and open carrying a firearm also. She deserves a lot of credit for participating in the gun culture to this degree. By carrying a firearm, her research moved from just being an observer to an active member of the community she is researching. I found her comments on how it felt to be an open carry female to provide authentic insights that complemented the other gun stories. What is undeniable is that we are in a world where jobs have left the US but the people have remained behind. This has led to higher crime and higher unemployment. The author attempts, successfully, to explain the socioeconomic factors that have led to rise in crime and the attempts by some members of society to reclaim their sense of provider and protector in a post industrial economy that has disenfranchised a great many people.

An Academic's view of Concealed Carry By Amazon Customer I give the author full credit for being honest and at least attempting to be open minded (not easy to do with a volatile subject). Although her anti-gun bias is painfully obvious and permeates the entire book. The author was educated at Berkeley, and sees everything through that viewpoint. She misses several elephants in the room. For example: Could the fact that LBJ's Great Society programs have largely destroyed the black family have anything to do with the rise in inner-city violence? As a true Feminist, the author doesn't even consider the possibility that having generations of children grow up without fathers in the home might cause problems. She is much too academic, and tends to jump to a lot of conclusions. Based, I think, on current trends in Political Correctness, rather than objective reality. For example, she talks about growing financial insecurity making people less trustful of government. Really? In 1930's Germany, it seemed like financial insecurity made people far too trustful of their government. Her writing is filled with high-sounding, theoretical "psycho babble." She writes like a freshman college student, trying to impress her professor by blindly parroting back all the nonsense she learned in class. The author insists on trying to define reality based on academic theories. I suspect that a month of living on the street in a bad neighborhood would teach her a lot more than every Sociology class she ever took. She attributes a crime victims split second decision to fight for their lives to a vast, sociological reform movement. While people that carry firearms usually put a lot of serious thought into the possible consequences, sometimes it's just about trying to stay alive in an increasingly dangerous world. She has some notion in her head that self-defense isn't a good enough reason to have a gun. Therefore, everyone that carries a gun must have some other, more complicated, reason for doing so.According to the author, simple self-defense just isn't a good enough explanation. People who choose to carry guns must also be "making a statement" to society. While this might be true of the small minority of people who practice "Open Carry", she lumps that group in with the far larger number of people who carry concealed. I expect that most people who carry concealed can probably count on one hand the number of other people who even know they carry a gun. How are you supposed to be "making a social statement" if you go to great lengths to make sure no one knows what you're doing? She insists on injecting a racial bias into her findings. If a white crime victim defends himself against a black criminal, then he's (guilty of) making a racial judgement? Why isn't the black guy guilty of racism for trying to rob someone who's white? Is the black victim who defends himself against a white attacker also racist? She makes gender observations on the basis that women are somehow being marginalized because a higher percentage of men carry guns. And men, of course, only carry guns because of some need to preserve their dignity, or to see themselves as still useful as protectors. The possibility that a man might carry a gun for some reason other than propping up the male ego never even seems to occur to her.She somehow manages to find either a gender or racial bias in almost every single statement that anybody makes, as well as every statistic she researches. There is a whole chapter on racial profiling in the middle of the book, which appears to contain a number of legitimate concerns that should be addressed. To me, she undermines those valid points by having "cried wolf" so often before that I couldn't take her seriously. The overwhelming majority of blacks killed by guns are shot by other blacks committing crimes. Since she doesn't mention that, she comes off as pushing an agenda rather than seeking a real solution to the problem. She will give quotes from people as proof of societal racism/sexism, but does not offer any numbers to show how widespread that illustrated attitude is. For example, she quotes several men who made sexist remarks when they saw her carrying a pistol. But was that attitude evident in 75% of the men who saw her carrying a gun? Was it only 5%, and the other 95% treated her respectfully? She doesn't say. Does she offer any evidence of how prevalent this attitude is outside of the two economically devastated cities of Detroit and Flint where she did her research? Well, no. Any data showing whether this has gotten better or worse in the last 20 years? Not a word. But she uses these isolated examples to make blanket statements about sexism in American society. Using her own methodology, maybe what she really discovered is that Sexism is caused by Poverty? Her overall thesis is that the increase in gun ownership and carrying is tied to the (largely financial) decline of American society. Personally, I don't buy the whole Poverty causes Crime theory. Lack of Morality causes criminal behavior. The whole history of this country is filled with immigrants who arrived with nothing but the clothes they were wearing, and they didn't resort to selling drugs or armed robbery. There was a lot more financial decline in 1930's America, and there wasn't the same increase in violent crime (and most of it then was fueled by Prohibition, not widespread poverty). Having said that, if we were still living in the 1950's, or Mayberry as she calls it, fewer honest citizens would feel the need to protect themselves. The author is not emotionally driven or hostile to gun owners. She is simply starting from a different set of assumptions. If you accept, for example, that Poverty causes Crime, then certain conclusions naturally follow from that. And all discussions of, or solutions to, criminal behavior are filtered through that assumption. Even if she has to ignore some inconvenient facts, and come up with convoluted theories, in order to make everything fit into her assumptions (Berkeley doesn't seem to be a big fan of teaching the Scientific Method).I obviously disagree with much of what the author says. But the book offers a fascinating look into a World View. Since this world view is predominant among both the old mainstream media and in academic circles, it is worth taking the time to understand it.

"“When Cats Nap They Dream About Taking Over the World” is a memorable and laugh-out-loud collection of children’s experiences with their feline pets. Children between the ages of four and thirteen freely and colorfully expound on such topics as why cats are lovable, what cats think of their owners and veterinarians, what cats make of domestic family life, and what a typical cat’s personality is really like. But the children also proceed further into their imaginations and speculate about good books for cats, the proper school curriculum for all cats, what their four-legged friends dream about when they nap, and a cat’s relationship to spirituality and religion. Ultimately, the children tell us with considerable passion and good humor how having a cat has influenced and shaped their upbringing. Here are just a few of the hundred of choice offerings: “All cats believe that people are the finicky ones.” (Ryan, aged ten) “If cats had their country, then everything would be purr-fect!” (Colette, aged eleven) “Cats don’t really wear clothes. . . . They prefer to be naked.” (Carey, aged eight) “What do cats believe should be done to dogs? Deportation to North Korea!” (Jared, aged thirteen) “Every cat needs private time so they can contemplate their life.” (Stephanie, aged twelve)"

It's a good book for someone with limited programming knowledge looking to take that first step into writing Swift applications for OS X platforms. It progresses nicely, and before you know it, you'll have created your first Swift app on OS X. I am about half way through it and find each chapter easy to read, digest information, then go back and read again as I practice the material on my Mac. I would recommend this book to any beginner to intermediate programmer looking to jump into Swift application development.

It's truly enlightening. This doesn't just teach you how to program using Swift, this book lays an amazing foundation for an aspiring developer...from starting out with wonderful and lucid explanations of object-orientation to explaining design patterns(MVC). Thank you again Wallace for such a great book! This book made me feel like I wasn't just mentally slogging through it and gave me a bunch of "ah ha!" moments that I've been searching for using other books and resources. KUDOS! If you're a beginner looking to start with Apple development or just looking for a good place to learn to program(Granted you have access to an Apple computer) then start with this book!

Thanks to the author for writing this book specifically for programming the Mac. There are very few. The book is clear, accurate, explains things very clearly without losing sight of the context in which the programmers then apply the concepts they are learning. The approach of the book is comprehensive and deals with all matters with an unprecedented clarity.

Greece is really a beautiful place, waiting to be explored in totality By Tiffany Lane Greece is really a beautiful place, waiting to be explored in totality. For many of us who have yet gotten the chance to visit the islands of Greece and Athens, they are the true hallmarks of elegance and exoticism. The author covers the attractions in Greece and Athens, the types of transport available, the variety of food and the preparations required for travelling to these places. It's always good to have a small guidebook for travelling, just in case you have a sudden change of itinerary and need to consult something handy.

The Descent of man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, by Charles Darwin

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

Excellent historical review By David Horn While I would never presume - as some reviewers might - to misstate what is said in this classic volume and then presume to suggest that "now you don't need to read the book," I will say that this is an excellent edition of a classic work. All who have any interest in the history of Darwinian evolution and particularly the historical views of the evolution of man will find this fascinating reading, particularly if the context can be juxtaposed with what has been discovered since Darwin's time. Of course, times have changed, our hopefully less euro-centric views have been altered and there has been considerable progress through the generations since the original publication by Darwin, and that makes the progress of human knowledge all the more fascinating, as well as the insight Darwin obviously possessed in his day. This one's a "must-read" for anyone interested in the history of science.

20 of 23 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read, but Not for Everyone By InquiringMind A truly outstanding read!I've kept The Descent of Man on my book shelf for over 30 years, unread. I was always too busy to justify the time required to do it justice. Now that I'm writing a dissertation in the History and Philosophy of Science I had the excuse I always lacked for tackling this monumental work. I'm glad I waited.Years as a practicing biologist and teacher have taught me the value of perspective. This is not a book that will teach you the details of human evolution. Read something recent in biological anthropology if that is what you are after. If you struggle with the convoluted sentence structure and wordiness of Victorian prose, this is certainly not the book for you. Try Harry Potter or Curious George instead.I always enjoy reading the negative reviews of books written on controversial topics just to see how many people actually review the subject matter rather than the book. I find it hysterical that 6 of the 7 negative reviews listed here were written by two fundamentalists and the seventh one was so tongue-in-cheek I'd give his review 5-starts just for fun. I found all but one of these negative reviews very predictable, and irrelevant. The Descent needs to be read by anyone interested in what Darwin thought and dared to publically declare. It should not, however, be read outside the context of his letters, and the social milieu in which he lived. It is most certainly anchored in a different age yet bridges that age to our own. Evolution is the cornerstone of all modern biology. Darwin's astonishing synthesis and daring predictions continue to be tested, refined, and corroborated. Seeing "only in a glass darkly," he nonetheless illuminated so much that is correct in human evolutionary history. Even thoughs who critisize his quaint use of terms do so from a perspective elevated by his work. I found his writing prescient in light of the bushiness displayed in hominin fossils. If you need a context then read Janet Browne's seminal two-volume Darwin biography. If you need adventure and a Darwinian primer, then read Voyage of the Beagle. But don't stop reading Darwin till you've read this book. The Origin is incomplete without it.

32 of 40 people found the following review helpful. How is possible that I am the first to review this important book? By Shirley Schwartz This book takes off where "Origin of the Species" leaves off. In Origin, Darwin does not present his hypotheses on the origin of man, but in this book he states categorically that the human race is descended from earlier species of apes, which were descended from much more primitive life forms. The book is the work of a naturalist, and it is surprising how perceptive Darwin was, considering that this book was written in 1871. It faced a storm of rejection and tremendous furor. The book caused a storm of controversy throughout the entire world. Darwin sets out his facts as dispassionately as possible, but that did not stop many nations from banning the work. Darwin also clearly states in this important work that man is continuing to evolve. In this book Darwin states that the two main forms of selection that helped to shape the animals and humans the most through time are the theories of natural selection and sexual selection, and he explains the difference between these two often throughout the book. Even though the book is actually quite readable, I found it not an easy book to read. Even now these theories seem too much to be believed in some spots, but I do not argue at all with Darwin's theory. It is in fact the only way that the human race could have evolved. Definitely a must-read for anyone interested in "ground-breaking" literature.

What does it mean to grow up today as working-class young adults? How does the economic and social instability left in the wake of neoliberalism shape their identities, their understandings of the American Dream, and their futures?Coming Up Short illuminates the transition to adulthood for working-class men and women. Moving away from easy labels such as the "Peter Pan generation," Jennifer Silva reveals the far bleaker picture of how the erosion of traditional markers of adulthood-marriage, a steady job, a house of one's own-has changed what it means to grow up as part of the post-industrial working class. Based on one hundred interviews with working-class people in two towns-Lowell, Massachusetts, and Richmond, Virginia-Silva sheds light on their experience of heightened economic insecurity, deepening inequality, and uncertainty about marriage and family. Silva argues that, for these men and women, coming of age means coming to terms with the absence of choice. As possibilities and hope contract, moving into adulthood has been re-defined as a process of personal struggle-an adult is no longer someone with a small home and a reliable car, but someone who has faced and overcome personal demons to reconstruct a transformed self. Indeed, rather than turn to politics to restore the traditional working class, this generation builds meaning and dignity through the struggle to exorcise the demons of familial abuse, mental health problems, addiction, or betrayal in past relationships. This dramatic and largely unnoticed shift reduces becoming an adult to solitary suffering, self-blame, and an endless seeking for signs of progress. This powerfully written book focuses on those who are most vulnerable-young, working-class people, including African-Americans, women, and single parents-and reveals what, in very real terms, the demise of the social safety net means to their fragile hold on the American Dream.

Coming Up Short: Working-Class Adulthood in an Age of Uncertainty, by Jennifer M. Silva

Review "Impeccably researched and skillfully articulated, Silva's work is a timely primer on the current state of blue-collar Millennials." --Publishers Weekly

"In the tradition of Studs Terkel's Working and Lillian Rubin's Worlds of Pain, this poignant and powerful book takes us inside the lives of today's working class. With remarkable empathy and painful detail, Silva illuminates the personal stories of young workers with no unions, no pensions, no assets, and little hope for more than unstable low-wage jobs. Rather than blaming neoliberal capitalism for their precarious futures, she finds that these young people blame themselves. A smart and compelling page-turner, Coming Up Short is a truly masterful work." --Sharon Hays, author of Flat Broke with Children

"Capitalism and its devastating effects are best examined at the bottom of the social order, where men and women struggle with unemployment, with intimacy, and with forming self-respect. Coming Up Short studies working-class lives from a new perspective: that of the management of risk. It is a masterful contribution to our understanding of how capitalism creates the many anxieties that make up our lives." --Eva Illouz, Professor of Sociology, Hebrew University, Jerusalem

"This outstanding book offers a heartbreaking account of America's 21st century working class as they transition to adulthood. Dreaming of a life of college education, steady well-paying jobs, marriage, home-ownership, and children, they confront a reality of student loan debt, low-paying service sector jobs, unstable relationships, and a changed landscape of individual risk and self-blame. Silva's extraordinary ability to connect with these young people brings their perspectives to life, and her sharp analyses link their lives to wider social currents. Written with a rare combination of empathy and clear-eyed reasoning, Silva exemplifies sociology at its very best. This should be required reading for every young adult in America, and everyone who loves a young adult." --Mary Waters, M.E. Zukerman Professor of Sociology, Harvard University

"If you care about our country's future, ponder the compelling personal histories that Jennifer Silva portrays in this impressive book. Silva describes with grace and sensitivity how the economic and social changes that have rocked America in the last half century reverberate in the lives of young working class adults, radically isolated and striving to craft a sense of self in a world without security, without solidarity, and without trust. It is a chastening tale." --Robert D. Putnam, Professor of Public Policy, Harvard University, and author of Bowling Alone

"[A] brief yet devastating book that blends academic analysis and oral history to put a new face on well-documented trends that are more usually described in the abstract." --Boston Globe

"Silva has made a major contribution to understanding where young adults are coming from, what influences them, and what they consider to be common sense." --The American Conservative

"Fascinating" --Feministing.com

"[A]n enjoyable read and raises important issues that we generally overlook." --Washington Independent Review of Books

"Coming Up Short is a brief, but powerful, update of the status, difficulties, behaviors and distresses that characterize the lives of young working class adults. Based on in-depth interviews with 100 subjects, both White and African American, the book is -- among other things -- a reminder of the power of qualitative research, where the subjects' statements and the vignettes about them poignantly document a number of themes in a way that statistical tables could not... Coming Up Short is highly recommended for sociologists and social welfare students and academics alike. It informs in telling detail the difficult circumstances and self-perceptions of a significant portion of the American population. It is also a window into how the 'helping professions' have influenced the thinking of young adults and suggests that those professions need help their clients see their troubles in broader terms than they apparently currently do." --Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

"I enjoyed reading this book. It will stay in my memory long after it returns to my bookshelf, although I suspect it will not stay there long. For sociologists of youth and adulthood, like me, it contains many insights that spur the sociological imagination. But above all, the young working-class lives that Silva enables us to hear will continue to haunt me. They may be "coming up short" in an economic and social system that promises much, yet often delivers little, but to my mind and throughout Silva's book, they are adults with important messages to convey and lives to lead." --American Journal of Sociology

Struggling in the modern world By Phil Terrana One cannot help but be aware of the big problems facing this nation and the even bigger debate going on to find solutions to these problems. At the core of the struggle are those individuals and families trying to hold on to what they have acquired in the face of lost jobs and a collapsing housing market; and the 20 and 30-year olds trying to stake their place in the American economy. In regard to the younger generation, "Coming Up Short" adds greatly to the debate by putting human faces on the problem. The people Jennifer Silva interviewed face a myriad of problems--some the result of their doings and some through no fault of their own. What they all seem to share is a belief that they must endure these struggles alone. They have lost faith in the idea of a common struggle because time and again society (whether it be the job market, education, the military, the government or even their own families) has let them down. They have chosen to go it alone because they think it is their only choice. Their parent and grandparents grew up in societies with more effective safety nets and took advantage of them. The people Silva interviews are not lazy, ignorant, or unmotivated. In overcoming their own demons, they demonstrate personal strengths that have throughout our history been the cornerstone to our success. What holds them back is a thirty-year movement that seems to push the idea that successful people do it on their own. For 30 years we have worried about investors and have let workers fall by the wayside. Those already in the workforce during this period have, by making adjustments, been able to survive this assault although they won't come away unscathed. This book, on a very personal level, demonstrates what those trying to get into the game are going up against. As a nation we must stop looking at issues of living wages, deregulation, universal health care, student loans, and a whole host of others from a strictly cost effective point of view. Jennifer Silva drives home very well the point that there are real people at the heart of all these issues.

It explains (in a somewhat disorganized way) why the children who are & have recently come of age since 2000 (the Millennials) have had such a rough time. In effect, they have mostly tried to ride up on the coattails of the Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) successes & have been stomped on by the changing society & reduction in opportunities in today's world of work. My take:1) College: It used to be a ticket to a better life. Many companies still require a college degree of some type to be promoted above entry level jobs. The problem is that when my father graduated, about 6% of the workforce had graduated from college, when I graduated, it was about 25%. Today it is trending much higher & as a consequence, a college degree's value is greatly discounted. Add to this, college financial aid really isn't as it places an unsustainable financial burden on those who can least afford to pay.2) Debt (both college & other): This problem is exacerbated by the fact that due to prior abuses, congress has removed student debt from the classes of debt that can be discharged in a bankruptcy. Thus the quote from the book, "...that mean old lady, Sally Mae..." rings as true as the albatross that was hung around the Ancient Mariner's neck. It is a cross that must be born without relief, except in extreme circumstances, or death. The rest of the debts also overwhelm today's Millennials.3) Perpetual childhood: Unlike those of my generation, who were forced to go to war & had a chance to still find a decent job afterwords, today's Millennials are stuck with a declining economy and few good paying jobs. (No matter what the government's economists say, this economy is still declining, just like it did in the '30s when the government's economists denied the protracted extension of the depression.) They are also afflicted with an ambivalence that for lack of a better term, I'd call victim-hood.Finally, the hollowing out of the paths to upward mobility are having a devastating effect on them. Do all the right things & the paths to upward mobility are still closed out to them. The classic middle class jobs: manager, union journeyman, highly skilled technician, are all being reduced or are being shipped overseas. She summarizes with some ideas & polemics that may help, but in the end, I believe that she is still puzzled about how we can pull our society out of this malaise.A personal note: These folks are our children. If they can't attain a good adulthood, I fear that us older folks will suffer a reduced retirement as we are forced to support them way into their 30s & 40s. A time when we ourselves would need their support! Finally, an example of how ugly things are, think of this: Watch TV. Just look at the number of Reverse Mortgage ads that are out there. We, as the older generation, are given the opportunity to leave our children & grand-children, not the family house, but the requirement to move out all of our junk (at their cost) when we kick the bucket! This review is for the hardcover edition as borrowed through the Inter-Library Loan program.

Beautifully-written, fresh, and important read about working-class youth By M This is -- without a doubt -- the most convincing account of young adults I've ever read. I've always felt the discussions in the media about the "lazy" Millennial generation were overly general and implicitly classist. Silva's research finally gives a voice to this often overlooked segment of young adults. It's no wonder these young adults delay romance, distrust their communities, and have so little going for them. Make sure to read the chapter on the mood economy -- a fresh and interesting take on emotions! This is a timely, beautifully-written, and important read.

The artwork is interesting. Very organic and almost Art Nouveau. The quality of the paper is excellent. It's thick, so there's no bleed-through, and it's not pulpy like a child's coloring book. It's very therapeutic and would also make a great gift or be perfect for a girl's night out...wine and coloring.

The 93 Lewis chessmen, bought by the British Museum and by what is now the National Museum of Scotland in the mid nineteenth century, were made in twelfth-century Scandinavia, from ivory and whales' teeth. They continue to fascinate academics from various disciplines. In 2014 six of the British Museum's collection will be moved and displayed in a purpose-built museum in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland, near where they were discovered almost two hundred years ago.As David Caldwell says: 'The beauty of the Lewis chessmen and their significance in the development of the game of chess are factors which have overshadowed other matters relating to their origin and provenance.'So the chapters in this scholarly book look, for example, at the landscape of Scotland's western seaboard, at medieval politics and kingship and at the ivory trade in the north Atlantic as the time the chessmen were made.

A previous reviewer noted that it is academically inclined, which I would agree. I learned a great deal about the history of the Hebrides, including the fact that there was a Kingdom of the Isles for a couple of centuries. For those who are so inclined this is a seven course meal.

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Academic treatise; not for the general public By James T. Wheeler To me, this hardcover book is an academic treatise not designed for the general public. It really is a collection of analytical pieces written by scholars, many of whom come from Scandinavia, Iceland, Great Britain, and other northern climes. The style of writing is rather difficult to deal with, to say the least. Some passages must have a "fog index" of 100, or more. Add to that the unending scholarly footnotes and other references and the whole thing is nearly unreadable. Yes, the section on Iceland as being a likely origin of the Lewis Chessmen is intriguing and there are some good illustrations, maps, and photos in the 326 pages. But the narratives should have been edited into more readable form. My advice to those generally interested in the Lewis Chessmen would be to buy the small monographs that are available on the subject. These have been put out by the National Museum of Scotland and by the British Museum Press and range in length from 64-80 pages.
