From Publishers Weekly In the 18th-century English landscape, a folly was an extravagant building or ruin. In the 20th-century American landscape, the folly had to be the lawn. Jenkins's account gets off to a slightly slow start as she follows the lawn from its earliest beginnings as a simplified version of English romantic parks in the 19th century to the smooth fairway aesthetic fostered by the U.S. Golf Association (USGA) in the early 20th. But from then on, The Lawn is a quirky, thoroughly enjoyable look at man vs. nature, man vs. woman, and man vs. the Joneses. Despite the millions spent by both the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) and USGA to develop hardy disease- and pest-resistant turf for any climate, it did not obviate the need for tons of toxic herbicides and pesticides, gallons of water (even in the arid Southwest) and, as a 1952 article in Life said, the basics--"bamboo rake, grass shears, hand sprayer . . . wave sprinkler, a hoe, wheelbarrow, roller, iron rake, lawn mower and spade, an aerator, a weed knife." It was an arsenal, and Jenkins makes a convincing argument that the military metaphors used by advertisers and lawn-care experts alike were part of a male viewpoint that saw nature as something to be "controlled and mastered." It wasn't long before that controlled lawn, once a sign of affluence, became the strictly enforced norm of good citizenship and general moral rectitude. You will have no questions about how houses all came to be surrounded by lawns after reading this. It explains how agriculture, chemical companies, the garden industry, golfing, housing developments, world wars, etc... and the advent of new inventions have come together to result in an entire lifestyle revolving around 'the lawn.' The writing is smooth and it goes down easy, from cover to cover. Written in language anyone can understand, yet factual enough to hold the interest of those with some existing knowledge. There are about 20 pictures of vintage advertisements for lawn products, which I enjoyed seeing very much. There is also a good bit of detail about what used to grow on the property surrounding most homes before lawns.Please also see, "Redesigning the American Lawn; A search for Environmental Harmony," by F. Herbert Bormann, Diana Balmori, Gordon T. Geballe. This book takes up where we leave off. What is the impact of millions of monoculture lawns on the lifestyles and wallets of those who tend them, and on the environment? How can I change my yard to look better, and spend less time and money tending it (and to have less of a negative impact on the environment.)

A book to read while lying in your hammock By Amazon Customer This book describes the history of how lawns were first introduced to American, became popular, and then became a necessity. Jenkins traces the early history of lawns as importations of the English country garden concept, as found in Jefferson's gardens in Monticello. She also explains the influences that garden clubs, the golf industry, and the USDA had on the popularization of lawns. The book is not just about lawns, however. It also provides a very interesting analysis of how advertising was used to create demand for completely unnecessary products, and how those products, such as lawn mowers and weed whackers, later came to be thought of as indispensable. This book will be of interest to historians of landscape architecture as well as to researchers of material culture.

It's a comprehensive history, cultural and ecological critique of something we usually don't think twice about-- the lush, green, overfertilized and ultimately sterile front lawn. Jenkins has a sense of humor about her subject, but doesn't let it mask the very real implications of what happens when all that fertilizer and insecticide almost every suburbanite pours onto their lawns gets into the larger ecosystem. If you are into American pop culture, environmentalism, class history or even just a good non-fiction read, this book is for you.

About the Author William Addis is a consulting engineer at Buro Happold in London and the author of numerous books, academic papers, and book reviews on construction history published over the past 25 years. He holds a doctorate degree in the history and philosophy of engineering from the University of Reading, where he taught this subject for 15 years; he has also delivered lecture courses on engineering history at Cambridge University, the University of Bath, and University College, London. In 1998, he helped curate the exhibition "The Art of the Engineer" at the Pompidou Centre in Paris and contributed to the book that accompanied the exhibition. Addis is an active member of the Institution of Structural Engineers' History Study Group and lectures at professional conferences around the world.

Comprehensive overview of architectural engineering By curt dilger After reviewing this fantastic and ambitious book, I had a renewed appreciation for the evolving mentality of the architectural engineer throughout history, distinct from that of the architect. This was very valuable for me, and I would recommend the book on the force of this experience alone. But this book has much more to offer; beautiful and exhaustive illustration, excellent historic overview, and keen observation and understanding from an aerospace engineer. Architect OR Engineer--you will be inspired.

I have been looking for a book that bridges that gap between architecture and structural engineering, one that is easy to read, usable, artistic, scientific, comprehensive, and nicely bound. And here it is...Bill notes from the onset that this book is about building engineering, which is a term not commonly used and a term that does not differentiate between engineer and architect. They are two sides of the same coin, and books that treat them as completely different fields miss this point. Consequently we often find books on structures that are devoid of expressive forms and books on architecture that are devoid of the technicalities that allow form to exist. What I wanted was a book that skipped over the overly opinionated theories and exceedingly dry differential equations, a book that balanced beautiful photos and artwork with prose that is clear, concise, and free from pomp and artifice. Geoff Manaugh's blog gave me hope and, via his book, I became acquainted with this book by Bill Addis. I would say this was a serendipitous event as I was on the verge of piecing together all the elements that compose this book on my own.I owe you a debt of gratitude, Bill, for saving me thirty-plus years of research and allowing me to turn to one highly readable yet mind-blowingly vast tome for everything I hoped for and then some. I have coupled this with books such as Form and Forces and Structure Systems for a full range of information that is both enlightening and creativity-inducing. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn exactly how we as a race managed to get where we are in terms of what we live, work, and play in.

Along the way, the reader will be thrilled at the adventure that unfolds. Beautiful intriguing book By Lynn M This is a fascinating book, whether you are well versed in Egyptology or just beginning to understand the importance of archeological dating and therefore the controversy. The reader comes along with writer/filmmaker Mahoney as he interviews an impressive variety of experts in the field, thinking through various viewpoints on the Arrival, Multiplication, Slavery, Judgment, Exodus and Conquest. The book itself is full of helpful intriguing photos and timelines and is appealing in its beautiful layout. The summary points at the end of each chapter are concise, helping the reader weigh points for themselves. This is a book that will start many interesting discussions, a volume to page through again and again. I found it helpful to read after seeing the movie Patterns of Evidence, allowing me to pause, reread and consider each voice at my own pace. The extensive bonus chapters and endnotes are great resources as well.

Temple Construction Begun 480 Years After The Exodus By Rory Squaric The review "Well intentioned, deeply flawed" by Joseph Riley disregards Biblical testimony. The Bible states that the Exodus happened 480 years before the construction of the first temple. This places the Exodus around 1447 B.C. This is about 200 years before the time of Ramesses II."In the four hundred and eightieth year after the people of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, he began to build the house of the LORD." 1 Kings 6:1"i. The date in 1 Kings 6:1 also gives a marking point for the Exodus. As many suppose, the reign of Solomon began in 971 b.c. and ended at 913 b.c. (the temple was begun in 967 b.c.). This means that the Exodus took place in 1447 b.c." from enduring word.comI attended the movie premier.

The illustrations(photos) are easy to follow and I was happy the author also included how to make glove! This was god sent, because I have hard time finding a glove that suit the my surrounding and I don't want to attraction to myself by buying those expensive gloves, when I am going to the manual labor during my volunteer hikes.

I love the pattern samples. I feel like a protégé of the book. It's detailed. Some instructions have photos for easier and fast learning. Patterns are simple and perfect for my taste. So if you are wanting to learn how to have tons of fun and be able to really understand how to read information when written down in a pattern then this book is for you. It is not long but it is packed with lots of great info for a beginner. Yes I am female.

He should leave his one sided political drivel out and stick with facts. It was very obvious his views by how he mocked some actors and gave others a pass. To add more after reading. I would advise EVERYONE to avoid this like the plague. Many of his so called truths are rumors and some outright false hoods. Plus he somehow finds ways to add comments that have absolutely nothing to do with the movie he is discussing. He somehow was able to have one of his longest rants on the Silkwood post, where he discussed the 911 attacks and the impossibility of it being a plane that hit the pentagon. Maybe he should stick to tabloids and rumors. YES a plane COMPLETELY full of fuel traveling at a high speed and hitting a solid wall CAN and WILL completely be destroyed. His assertion that it was not enough debris is ridiculous. Most plane crashed are not DESIGNED to be occupied missiles as this was, that is why MOST crashes have more debris, the pilot would be trying to SAVE it not intentionally crash it. Also tell all the people who saw it and the families who lost loved ones on this plane it did not crash.

I found the stories behind the films interesting . I only gave it two stars due to the large amount of war pictures that it included and at times it seems repetitive on movies of similar subjects. I would also say that included was quite a bit of American bashing by the Australian author . All in all this book was however a great source of trivia.

The author states his criteria for selection and I'm good with that. He is an expert on what he likes and I am not. However, several generalizations were made which cannot go unchallenged despite the selection criteria used. Let me give one example of the lack of depth. It was stated in one review that, 'Not many good movies came out of the 70s..'. Anyone with any knowledge of 1970s movies will surely question that. I know tastes vary but....my goodness, that's off the mark by a long shot.Here are a few examples to chew on:Star Wars,The Godfather (1 & 2),Rocky (1 & 2),Taxi Driver,One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,A Clockwork Orange,American Graffiti,Apocalypse Now,Alien,Mad Max,The Deer Hunter,The Exorcist,Jaws,Deliverance,Carrie,Young Frankenstein,Enter the Dragon,Superman,Close Encounters,Life of Brian,Chinatown,Dirty Harry,The Sting,Halloween,Saturday Night Fever,Jeremiah Johnson,MASH,The French Connection....and on and on and on.Not only is it misleading to say...'Not many good movies came out of the 70s', it's flat out wrong.So, if your looking for a quick read, this will pass the time without taxing your brain too much.

Herring Susanne Alleyn has done something all historical writers, fiction and nonfiction, should strive to do: she educates while entertaining.Medieval Underpants and Other Blunders is a book packed with information that most writers of historicals will admit they should have read before beginning their careers. While trying to paint a picture of life in another time, we've all been caught in a blunder or two (one of mine was putting rhododendrons in the 1500s) The result is being chastised by a reader more tuned in to detail than ambiance.It's frustrating and humbling.Alleyn's approach is commendable. She doesn't gasp and sputter at errors (well, maybe a little at the really bad ones) with the arrogance of someone who thinks she's never made one. She admits to her own mistakes, cites possible reasons behind the mistakes of others (sometimes it makes a better story), and then gives helpful information on how to avoid errors in one's own work. Tons of material, all organized into easy chapters so readers/writers can look it up and get it right.That's the other thing she recommends: look up everything. Don't assume you know because you read it in another novel or saw it in a movie.The book is fun to read and an essential start for the beginning historical writer.For those of us who've been at it a while, it's an entertaining reminder that we need to keep on researching. It's so easy, when the writing's going well, to slip a revolver, a cigar, or a handkerchief into the hand of someone who couldn't possibly have known what to do with it.

This little book is a smart warning, covering the major blooper areas, and a fun read for historical fiction writers and readers. As an avid reader and history buff, I beg all historical novelists to read it.Being a picky person, and because I work in a library (a place historical fiction writers should haunt), I was disappointed that 1) the author did not mention libraries as a resource (Archives, as primary source repositories, were indirectly implied. Take note of those valuable places, writers and researchers.)and 2) she did not impart a few lessons and tips on how to do research. Perhaps she believed it was a given that people who write know how to book, manuscript, map, ephemera, museum and web research and that they just don't do it. Or perhaps she knows that there are good instruction books on researching and did not want to re-invent the wheel. She just did not put them in the bibliography. As an author myself of historical novels, I have often perspired over the problem of getting historical details correct. I have also been guilty of nitpicking other writers over their mistakes. Recently I read a novel which takes place in ancient Egypt, 1300 BC. The character uses the phrase "the seconds were ticking away." In those days they didn't have clocks that ticked, nor could they measure seconds. The sort of error I try to avoid, in order not to get a red face. I especially appreciate Alleyn's discussion of period slang and figures of speech. To me, an historical novel is not history, but it should express an appreciation of history. By Avid Reader I have it but it doesn't agree with the instructions I'm receiving from my Biblical Hebrew class. Strong's Hebrew alphabet includes a "c" which doesn't appear in my current Hebrew class listing. He also transliterates and pronounce some of the vet (v) consonants as bet (b). Perhaps, there is a difference between Biblical Hebrew and Hebrew. As I get further in my studies, I may let you know. Right now, it is confusing.

The font small which makes reading the dense material even more taxing. They don't even bother to speak in plain english with regards to explaining the topics. I found the book unbearable and utilized my explanations and examples book more to learn and study topics than this textbook. On the upside it's heavy enough to put on top of my cat carrier so that when she's in it she won't wiggle her way across the floor and down the stairs :)

Am feeling pretty confident now By Collins I purchased this book in the hopes it would help me prepare for public speaking, I am about to launch a new product, and the fear of standing up in front of people is frankly terrifying. This book is full of practical advice, things I never even thought about - control breathing, setting pace of my pitch. The helpful tips on how to prepare my speech are spot on. I was ready to go give a speech, but after reading this I am going in to tell a story instead. Once you read the book you'll understand the importance of telling a story.
