Jane Tylus’s Siena is a compelling and intimate portrait of this most secretive of cities, often overlooked by travelers to Italy. Cultural history, intellectual memoir, travelogue, and guidebook, it takes the reader on a quest of discovery through the well- and not-so-well-traveled roads and alleys of a town both medieval and modern.             As Tylus leads us through the city, she shares her passion for Siena in novelistic prose, while never losing sight of the historical complexities that have made Siena one of the most fascinating and beautiful towns in Europe. Today, Siena can appear on the surface standoffish and old-fashioned, especially when compared to its larger, flashier cousins Rome and Florence. But first impressions wear away as we learn from Tylus that Siena was an innovator among the cities of Italy: the first to legislate the building and maintenance of its streets, the first to publicly fund its university, the first to institute a municipal bank, and even the first to ban automobile traffic from its city center.             We learn about Siena’s great artistic and architectural past, hidden behind centuries of painting and rebuilding, and about the distinctive characters of its different neighborhoods, exemplified in the Palio, the highly competitive horserace that takes place twice a year in the city’s main piazza and that serves as both a dividing and a uniting force for the Sienese. Throughout we are guided by the assured voice of a seasoned scholar with a gift for spinning a good story and an eye for the telling detail, whether we are traveling Siena’s modern highways, exploring its underground tunnels, tracking the city’s financial history, or celebrating giants of painting like Simone Martini or giants of the arena, Siena’s former Serie A soccer team.             A practical and engaging guide for tourists and armchair travelers alike, Siena is a testament to the powers of community and resilience in a place that is not quite as timeless and serene as it may at first appear.

Siena: City of Secrets, by Jane Tylus

Review "Successfully mixes a wide variety of genres and in many ways defies categorization. . . . The result is an outstanding volume, which demonstrates all the qualities the author has shown in her earlier works, and more. . . . At the book’s structural heart lies the Santa Maria della Scala, or Spedale. One of the first hospitals in Europe, it began by welcoming pilgrims and then the sick. One of its last patients before it reopened as a museum was the writer Italo Calvino, who died there in 1985 after a stroke, and from whom Tylus seems to have learned not a few lessons in terms of the simplicity and lightness of her style and the intricate patterns of her textual architecture. Like Calvino, Tylus has an eye for detail. . . . During the course of her journey, she accumulates many riches, which she generously passes on here." (Philip Cooke Times Higher Education)"[Tylus's] fundamental theme is that of Siena's indelible sense of its distinctiveness, present in everything from a vaporous Beccafumi fresco to the hermetic shimmer of Mario Luzi's poetry. In an epigraph to his collection Parole pellegrine, the poet enquires of his former life in the city: 'To what was I at once both accomplice and stranger?' Doubtless because she understands how to be both of these simultaneously, Tylus brings greater empathy than any of her forerunners writing on Siena to the decoding of its secrets." (Jonathan Keates Times Literary Supplement)"Tylus has not produced a history or travel guide to Siena--there are plenty of those--but, as her subtitle indicates, something more intimate and personal. Her narrative mentions all the main architectural sights, works of art and cultural activities, but interweaves these with digressions that jump back and forth from the past to the present, from the core of the city to its surroundings, from its very foundations to the pinnacles of its towers. In this she mirrors in her text the rich, complex, undulating, and labyrinthine city to which she keeps returning." (Christopher Menz Australian Book Review)“Siena is indeed a city of secrets; it’s always been too secretive for me, despite (or because of) its breathtakingly beautiful surfaces. Tylus manages wonderfully to unfold mysteries while keeping the secrets alive and alluring. The book is a marvelous mixture of erudition and personal reminiscence. Her literary and historical mastery is absolute, but she is also a delightful companion enabling us to travel the city as it exists now and the city with centuries of its history as though intact before our gaze. Read Siena and see the city through the eyes of a particularly gifted observer who is also a gifted writer.” (Leonard Barkan, author of Michelangelo: A Life on Paper)"Quite a few scholars feel that they have a 'crossover book,' maybe even a novel in them, but not many can bring it off with Tylus's literary flair. Tylus's dynamic city cuts across romantic and realist stereotypes that have oddly conspired to make Siena seem at once poignantly pretty, frozen in time, and insouciant, unable or unwilling to manage its affairs. Specialists may admire the work, quibble (which is what makes them specialists), or just be envious, but its true audience will be lay lovers of Italy, actual and armchair travelers, and Anglophone students who want a preview or a postlude to studying in Siena. I don't know of any book on Siena in any language better suited to such a readership or a reading." (Randolph Starn, author of Varieties of Cultural History)"By presenting Siena as a pilgrim's city, Jane Tylus has provided an essential key to its complicated beauty.  Best of all, she provides every visitor with a genuine sense of belonging, for she shows, ranging across the centuries, that we wayfarers have been as essential a part of Siena's timeless cityscape as our Tuscan hosts.  A haunting, evocative book about one of the world's most wondrous places." (Ingrid Rowland, author of From Pompeii: The Afterlife of a Roman Town)Neither guidebook, nor memoir, nor academic text, but all of these, Tylus’s Siena takes readers into the nooks and crannies of this splendid medieval city without ever losing sight of the larger cultural issues that define Sienese identity. Tylus has done a prodigious amount of research, but she wears her erudition lightly, and writes with a novelist’s flair. She evinces a deep love for Siena, leavened by a wry sense of amusement at the quirks of the native Sienese, and a nuanced understanding of what can make them seem insular. What resides at the center of this book is the story of the author as veteran sojourner—more rooted than tourist or pilgrim, but never quite able to attain that sense of belonging that is the Sienese birthright.  Herein lies the fascination and the challenge of Siena: City of Secrets. (Millicent Marcus, author of After Fellini: National Cinema in the Postmodern Age)

About the Author Jane Tylus is professor of Italian studies and comparative literature at New York University, where she is also faculty director of the Humanities Initiative. Her recent publications include Reclaiming Catherine of Siena: Literacy, Literature, and the Signs of Others, also published by the University of Chicago Press, and The Poetics of Masculinity in Early Modern Italy, coedited with Gerry Milligan.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Nigh essential if you already are enamored with Siena or if you will be going there for an extended visit By R. M. Peterson I have been fascinated with Siena since taking a college course about the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Then, about twenty years ago, I was fortunate enough to spend a week in and around Siena; it was a high point of my rather limited experiences as a world traveller. I doubt that I will return, although I would love to. Given that background, I probably was much more predisposed to like SIENA by Jane Tylus than the average general reader. Having read it, I doubt that it will persuade people unfamiliar with the city that it is indeed one of the more special and singular cities on earth. However, for those who already are enamored with Siena, or are going there for an extended visit, the book should not be missed.Jane Tylus is a professor of Italian studies and comparative literature at New York University. She spent considerable time in Siena over the years. Her book is a learned and literate -- and loving -- survey of Siena and many of the sites, people, and cultural artifacts that make it special. (The center of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.) She gives some attention to the contrade, or neighborhoods of Siena, and to the Palio, the famous horse race around the Piazza del Campo held twice each summer. She also discusses some of the more famous buildings of the city -- for example, the Duomo, the Palazzo Pubblico, and the Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala (about 1,000 years old and one of the world's oldest hospitals). But she focuses more on the past of Siena, especially its cultural past. Among the famous Sienese who figure prominently in her account are Saint Catherine (her preserved though shriveled head can be seen in a side chapel of San Domenico; her body is interred in Rome) and Aeneas Silvia Piccolomini, better known as Pope Pius II.The book does not really serve well as a travel guide to Siena. Nor, as a history, is it comprehensive. (For example, relatively scant attention is given to the Black Death plague of 1348, which reduced the population of Siena by about two-thirds.) Instead, the book seems to cover what most interests Jane Tylus. Moreover, she is not systematic in her presentation. Rather, her text meanders from topic to topic, returning again and again to some while leaving others mentioned only once. In noting these points, I am not being critical; Tylus's approach is an idiosyncratic but ultimately charming one.SIENA is a handsome book. It is quite well-written, with a flowing style that I found reminiscent of Ingrid D. Rowland (whom Tylus quotes). Sometimes, however, the prose began to wash over me and lull me into a doze, a phenomenon, by the way, I also have experienced reading Rowland. The book includes thirty-five illustrations, mostly Sienese works of art and most in color. There also are three maps, but I would have appreciated more detailed maps on which one could more readily locate all sites discussed in the text.

From plumbing to pilgrimages, money to monasteries, there are fascinating facts for those who've never been to this beautiful city. And for those who have, this book sheds light on why modern Siena is the way it is now. Integrated with the author's personal experiences with her family over many trips to Siena, whether you are an academic or tourist, this is a "must read" book, especially if you plan on a visit in the future.

Tylus has a lovely, accessible style that brings history to life through the vivid stories she finds in every corner of this seductive city. Highly recommended!

Excerpt from The Origin of the English NationThis book attempts to give an account of the early history of the English nation, so far as the information at our disposal permits. The author ventures to hope that in spite of its many shortcomings it may serve to call attention to a field of investigation which, though rich in promise, has been greatly neglected, especially in this country. In general he has sought to make use of all branches of ethnological study - history, tradition, language, custom, religion and antiquities. Owing however to the backwardness of archaeological research throughout the north of Europe, except in Denmark and Sweden, it has not been found possible to treat the last of these subjects in a manner at all commensurate with its true importance. When this branch of study has been developed it will perhaps be possible to obtain more light on the affinities of the English nation in times anterior to those to which the earliest heroic traditions refer. At present, it need hardly be said, we have little definite evidence available for that early period, and any investigation that is made must necessarily partake more or less of a hypothetical character.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Seminal Work of Plainly Indispensible Value By ScottTownsendPublishers A highly detailed account of the origin of the Anglo-Saxons, Germans, Jutes and Danes with four maps showing the ancient homelands in Scandinavia, Germany and Britain early in the present era.It has often been said that the English nation had sprung from diverse racial origns, but while it indeed represents an amalgam of Anglo-Saxons, Germans, Jutes and Danes, with related Celtic elements, these peoples were all closely related. Even the Celts are now believed to have separated from the Germanic speakers only a thousand years or so B.C., when they spread out in all directions from the common Germanic-Celtic homeland north of the European Alps.Contents include: The Saxons, Angles and Jutes in Britain; The Angles and Saxons in Germany; The Danish Settlers; The Classification of the Ancient Germanii.

You really have to understand how the code works or else you won’t get a good result or any result at all. This book is definitely helpful. There are plenty of examples and practices every end of the chapter. What sets it apart from most books is that JAVA textbooks tend to be too wordy. However with this book, a topic is presented, you are given an example and you get to practice what you have read. This is very helpful to college students who have JAVA as part of their curriculum.

Excerpt from Laboratory Problems in Civic BiologyI has become the fashion in modern pedagogy to teach by the so-called "Problem Method," that is, to attempt to make the child solve problems from the very beginning of his work in the elementary school. But it is one thing to say to the child, "Here is your problem, solve it," and quite another thing to lead him through the several thought processes necessary to the solution of the problem. A child of six may be taught to think, and think clearly, if he is guided so that he makes a generalization after comparison with what his senses tell him he knows. The mistaken notion of our educational system has been that drill and drill alone, pure memory work, is only fitted for the mental life of our young children. Nothing is further from the actual truth. The mental growth of the child is an evolutionary growth, but it is a development based more upon his reaction to the world than upon the mechanism within his body. The nervous system and its connectives develop early. Our education of the nervous system, based on the theory that the nervous system is not well developed, makes simply for the formation of concepts.Concept forming and concept enlargement are a necessary part in any scheme of education, but the method and the form of straight thinking are of even greater importance. Problems in life are not solved by knowing dates or facts, no matter how important or interesting these may be. The methods of reaching a conclusion, of weighing evidence, of making decision upon the merits of the facts in a case, of thinking straight from evidence gained from given data, - these are the habits of mind which are worth far more to a child than the actual impact with the subject matter in a textbook.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The truth about how they think and feel about the disabled, minorities, less fortunate and so on. You cannot cover this stuff up as it is in here for historical posterity. It was the book in use during the Scopes Monkey trial and was a standard educational textbook which the Scopes Monkey Trial was based on (The mandatory introduction of the THEORY of Darwin into our public schools, superseding God and anything profound, supplanting it with cynicism, slanted science and political overtures throughout the rest of my lifetime.

But this is a updated one? Or perhaps a parallel textbook, because this one doesn't have any evolution teaching in it. I was really trying to find the eugenic-type quotes but I think that book is titled "Civic Biology" not "Laboratory Problems in Civic Biology".

Power and Politics in the Book of Judges studies political culture and behavior in premonarchic Israel, focusing on the protagonists in the book of Judges. Although the sixth-century BCE Deuteronomistic editor portrayed them as moral champions and called them "judges," the original bardic storytellers and the men and women of valor themselves were preoccupied with the problem of gaining and maintaining political power. These "mighty ones" were ambitious, at times ruthless; they might be labeled chiefs, strongmen, or even warlords in today's world. John C. Yoder considers the variety of strategies the men and women of valor used to gain and consolidate their power, including the use of violence, the redistribution of patronage, and the control of the labor and reproductive capacity of subordinates. They relied heavily, however, on other strategies that did not deplete their wealth or require the constant exercise of force: mobilizing and dispensing indigenous knowledge, cultivating a reputation for reliability and honor, and positioning themselves as skillful mediators between the realms of earth and heaven, using their association with YHWH to advance their political, economic, or military agenda.

By Amazon Customer As a theologian and a historian of Africa, Dr. Yoder has wriiten an excellent, accessible book. Using some of the same methods he has used in an earlier work exploring the history of the Kanyok people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, he looks at the Biblical book of Judges in a new, enriching way. The conception of the book, the idea of looking at the times and the events described in the book of Judges and applying the tools, skills and perspective achieved in the savanna of Central Africa makes for a fascinating read. The strengths of the book that struck me were the following:Its unique approach to the topic. Its accessible style to such an esoteric topic. Any reader open to new ideas and possessing a modicum of intellectual curiousity will be enthralled.

The First Complete Guide to DevOps for Software Architects

DevOps promises to accelerate the release of new software features and improve monitoring of systems in production, but its crucial implications for software architects and architecture are often ignored.

In DevOps: A Software Architect’s Perspective, three leading architects address these issues head-on. The authors review decisions software architects must make in order to achieve DevOps’ goals and clarify how other DevOps participants are likely to impact the architect’s work. They also provide the organizational, technical, and operational context needed to deploy DevOps more efficiently, and review DevOps’ impact on each development phase. The authors address cross-cutting concerns that link multiple functions, offering practical insights into compliance, performance, reliability, repeatability, and security.

This guide demonstrates the authors’ ideas in action with three real-world case studies: datacenter replication for business continuity, management of a continuous deployment pipeline, and migration to a microservice architecture.

Comprehensive coverage includes

• Why DevOps can require major changes in both system architecture and IT roles

• How virtualization and the cloud can enable DevOps practices

• Integrating operations and its service lifecycle into DevOps

• Designing new systems to work well with DevOps practices

• Integrating DevOps with agile methods and TDD

• Handling failure detection, upgrade planning, and other key issues

• Managing consistency issues arising from DevOps’ independent deployment models

• Integrating security controls, roles, and audits into DevOps

• Preparing a business plan for DevOps adoption, rollout, and measurement

DevOps Reality - Not DevOps the buzzword By T Anderson This is the first DevOps book that shows a realistic and achievable view of the full implementation of DevOps. Most of the books and other literature I have read on DevOps are all about the culture, the attitudes, how it relates to Agile and Lean practices, and a high level view of microservices. This book includes all that, but they are not its main focus, and it goes several steps further with respect to the architecture and infrastructure needed for the implementation. The book is broken down into 5 parts. I have listed each part below along with the chapters they include.Part One: BackgroundChapter 1. What Is DevOps?Chapter 2. The Cloud as a PlatformChapter 3. OperationsPart Two: The Deployment PipelineChapter 4. Overall ArchitectureChapter 5. Building and TestingChapter 6. DeploymentPart Three: Crosscutting ConcernsChapter 7. MonitoringChapter 8. Security and Security AuditsChapter 9. Other IlitiesChapter 10. Business ConsiderationsPart Four: Case StudiesChapter 11. Supporting Multiple DatacentersChapter 12. Implementing a Continuous Deployment Pipeline for EnterprisesChapter 13. Migrating to MicroservicesPart Five: Moving Into the FutureChapter 14. Operations as a ProcessChapter 15. The Future of DevOpsThe first chapter introduces DevOps and puts it into context with respect to the rest of the book. The definition of DevOps the authors provide focuses on the goals, rather than the means- DevOps is a set of practices intended to reduce the time between committing a change to a system and the change being placed into normal production, while ensuring high quality. They also identify five different categories of DevOps practices that help define their definition of DevOps. I have repeated them below. 1. Treat Ops as first-class citizens from the point of view of requirements. 2. Make Dev more responsible for relevant incident handling. 3. Enforce the deployment process used by all, including Dev and Ops personnel. 4. Use continuous deployment. 5. Develop infrastructure code, such as deployment scripts, with the same set of practices as application code.Chapter 1 also talks about the reduction of coordination and different barriers that can present themselves. The barriers include the culture, type of organization, the goals operations verses development, silo mentality, tool support, and personnel issue such as the difference in salaries between developers and operation staff. Moving operation tasks to a developers plate may not make much sense if the time to do the task is not drastically reduced.Chapter 2 gives a nice introduction to using a cloud environment as a platform. The way in which this book describes the implementation of DevOps, the cloud is a key component. The chapter does a really great job of introducing a ton of material in a very concise way. They start by introducing and discussing the characteristics of the cloud- on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured service.Chapter 2 also covers the 3 types of service - Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). The authors go into detail of how the cloud impacts DevOps - the ability to create and switch environments simply, the ability to create VMs easily, and the management of databases.Chapter 3 is a discussion of the core concepts and phases of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and how traditional IT Ops and DevOps interact.Part 2 covers the deployment pipeline. This part is where the microservice architectural style is covered. Deploying, monitoring, debugging, performance management, testing, and team skills are all different than what most development teams are going to be used to. Most teams will not be able to achieve instancing a microservice architecture, for various reasons, but there are some really good practices in this part of the book that teams can achieve.I just got done researching microservices and NServiceBus. I came to the conclusion I would not be able to move in that direction in my current environment. Although team skills where of some concern, the culture is what killed the possibility. It is a command and control environment that is anything but transparent. In order to make such a fundamental shift in the way things are done there would have to be major changes. The environment allows for no agile or lean practices, although it claims to be agile, and is completely closed to change.Certain parts of the book may come across as completely academic and unrealistic, but depending on your environment all best practices and software development principles written by the gurus of our profession may be unrealistic. Do yourself a favor and push through. The case studies do a great job of taking the first three part of the book and showing how organizations are doing their best to move towards a DevOps environment.I thought the case studies were very thorough, maybe even too thorough. Although I think SEI's books contain some of the most important information that has been released in our industry, their books are not always the easiest to read. For as short as this one is, it took me quite a while. A lot of that was my schedule, but not all of it.I can tell you from experience that most of the places I go think the same thing about all of SEI's materials. They mostly view it as purely academic. They are wrong. The places that have allowed me to practice the processes found in Software Product Lines: Practices and Patterns, Software Architecture in Practice, Documenting Software Architectures: Views and Beyond, Software Systems Architecture: Working With Stakeholders Using Viewpoints and Perspectives, CMMI for Development, and The CERT Guide to Insider Threats, have seen how well their advice works. Places that don't allow me to apply the practices only did themselves a disservice because I did them anyway. It is the only way I know how to successfully build complex software successfully. For those places that micromanaged my activities to make sure I was not wasting time documenting or planning I had to tell - Find someone else to do it. I don't know how to build something wrong, and I have no interest in learning how to. Right now in my current environment they would love me to come in, sit down, shut up, and just go with the flow. The problem with that is the flow is currently taking us down a toilet hole, so I have no choice but to go against the flow!If DevOps can make it across the chasm you will be very happy to have the material found in this book in your arsenal of knowledge.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I especially like the fact the book addresses the deployment pipeline in ... By Daniel Sullivan As an enterprise architect working exclusively in the cloud, I find this book spot on for my needs. I especially like the fact the book addresses the deployment pipeline in detail, covering topics from microservices to integration testing to partial deployments and rollbacks. This may be common knowledge to some, but as an architect focused primarily on data an analytics, it is a concise and useful resource. The first couple of chapters gives a solid overview of DevOps and cloud computing. The cloud computing chapter covers key points enough to orient the reader unfamiliar with features of the cloud. Part Two addresses the deployment pipeline followed by a section on monitoring, security and business considerations. The discussion of what to monitor in Chapter 7 helps breakdown a complex operation into manageable areas. My only suggestion to the authors, if they were to publish a second edition, is to add more network security control discussion to Chapter 8. The chapter is solid, I'd just like more. (This may be my own bias from working in healthcare where you can't get up for a cup of coffee without thinking about HIPAA regulations). I appreciate Chapter 12 on continuous deployment and Chapter 13 on microservices. The presentation is just right for getting a good overall picture and I feel like I can easily dig deeper into references in the Further Reading section at the end of the chapters. The book is not a quick read. The substance is in the text. Often times, I find I can readily read through a few chapters in a book but not this one. Each chapter deserves a little time to settle in before moving on to the next topic. I noticed another reviewer commented on the lack of information content of the diagrams. I thought there were relatively few diagrams for a book of its length, but those that were included tended to be high level but relevant to the text. This is one of a dozen or so books I keep on my shelf at work. It's one of the two that ever gets borrowed. (The other is on Python and analytics).Disclosure: I have published with the Addison-Wesley, publisher of this book.

A Cloud Architect's View on DevOps By Gregor Hohpe Len and team present a systematic, architecture-centric view to what is needed to support a DevOps culture. The outline of the book follows almost chronologically the building and deployment of an application, from building and test (ch 5) to deployment (ch 6). monitoring (ch 7). There is ample detail, including how to failover to a backup data center including your data replication, DNS switch-over etc. The book also mentions specific products (mostly open source) for implementation, which gives it a good grounding in reality. You can trust the SEI titles to be thorough, if even a tad encyclopedic -- you fill find the book contains a lot of checklists or lists of elements of a system. This makes for an excellent reference, but occasionally requires some discipline from the reader. So you may read the parts that are important to you as opposed to the whole book cover to cover. The title certainly capitalized on the DevOps buzz. Much of the book is really about building systems for and running them in the cloud. I would say that without the cloud we would not have DevOps, so the choice of title is justifiable imho. As always, it's important to read the subtitle, too, which explains that this is a book about architecture.I found it particularly refreshing that the book is "only" 300 pages, but packs an enormous amount of information into those pages. This is a welcome contrast to those 800 page tomes that tend to repeat themselves over and over and often copy whole chapters from prior books by the same author.Disclosure: as a fellow Pearson author, I received a complimentary copy of the book. In my opinion, the list price ($39.99) is actually very reasonable for the amount of content Len and team squeezed in here.

Since the advent of the camera, there have been photographers whose mission is to record and interpret the public sphere in all its aspects. Eugene Atget documented evidence of everyday life in the streets as well as the buildings and monuments of Paris. Henri Cartier-Bresson pursued what he called "The Decisive Moment," the moment in which the meaning of an event was most clearly captured in a photograph. Their work, and that of many other masters, has inspired generations of photographers to wander public spaces, camera in hand, searching for meaningful moments in time.Success requires the street photographer to be proficient with their equipment, to be constantly aware of their surroundings, and to have a keen eye. Quick reflexes and self-confidence are essential: Street photographers know from experience that hesitation or procrastination could mean missing a once-in-a-lifetime shot. The adage "it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission" was probably coined by a street photographer. In Street Photography: The Art of Capturing the Candid Moment, Gordon Lewis helps readers understand and conquer the challenging yet rewarding world of street photography. The book includes discussions of why photographers are drawn to street photography, the different styles of street photography, and what makes a great street photograph. Lewis then goes on to explore how the choice of location can change a photographer's approach to image capture: from city streets to fairs to beaches, Lewis discusses the impact different environments have on the process of street photography. Another crucial element to becoming a good street photographer is learning to travel light, with minimal equipment. Lewis gives readers practical advice on everything from cameras and lenses to camera bags and clothing. Lewis also delves into the techniques and approaches that will help novices master the art of street photography. Whether your style is to engage your subjects or to remain unnoticed and take candid portraits, Lewis offers ideas on how to capture fascinating moments in time: a gesture, expression, or composition that may exist for only a fraction of a second, but can leave a lasting impression of the wonders, challenges, and absurdities of modern life.

About the Author

Gordon Lewis is a dedicated street photographer with over 40 years of experience. He began his writing career answering letters from owners of Olympus cameras, Vivitar flash units, and Kiron lenses. From there he graduated to being a contributing editor to magazines such as Camera 35, Petersen's Photographic, and Camera & Darkroom. Through unforeseen but fortuitous circumstances, he leveraged his irreverent wit into a TV sitcom-writing career, with hit shows such as Amen, Family Matters, and In Living Color to his credit. Now reformed, he earns his living as an e-learning instructional designer for Fortune 500 companies. Gordon lives just outside of Philadelphia-which, not coincidentally, is an excellent location for street photography.

That shouldn't require much thought, it might seem, until one has tried to do it, and returns with a sad collection of uninteresting images. There seems to be a real need for photographers interested in doing this kind of work to get some help as the publisher presumed when he asked the author to create this book. The author offers chapters that talk about things like cameras and technique, look at the work of a few practitioners, suggest places where one can take street photographs, and discuss the styles of street photography. Lewis finishes up with his ideas on what makes a great street photograph. But most of this boils down to: have a small, unobtrusive camera; learn to work fast, at a moment's notice; and have a deep reserve of chutzpa to take pictures of complete strangers with or without their knowledge. A large supply of luck is also desirable. And yet with all of that, anyone who has tried (but not persevered) at street photography can tell you that you won't get many good pictures. That's because street photography has to have content and knowing how to find it, recognize it and capture it probably can't be found in a book. Looking for something strange or wonderful is probably good, but some of the great street photographers have looked at the ordinary and in looking, made it extraordinary. In fact the most useful tool for a street photographer may be an inquiring mind. As folks say about tennis, or anything else that requires great skill, you've got to do it 10,000 times and you still may not master it. So far I haven't found much street photography skill between the covers of a book, although spending as much time as possible with masters like Henri Cartier-Bresson, or Elliot Erwitt, or Garry Winogrand can certainly help. I would have had greater confidence in Lewis' advice if his own photographs had approached closer to those greats. That's not to say that this book can't help you become a street photographer. It does tell you the basics of the set-up of street photography, and if you haven't been able to figure that out from looking at street photographs, or you need a little encouragement, the book can be useful. Just don't expect to read this book and take great (or even good) street photos. After you've shot 10,000 you can decide if the book helps.

Lossing I'm usually careful about being negative when it comes to books; even if it's not a great volume it probably took the author a lot of work to create. But all the same, there are good options and there are not-so-good options for spending your hard-earned dough. This particular book doesn't quite make the cut.If you're buying this book for technical, or skill-based, learning, you're better off going somewhere else. The content is largely generic and the sort of thing that can be found anywhere on the web. I didn't get a good sense of the author's personal style or ethos. A better bet for technique would be The Street Photographer's Manual, also to be found here on Amazon.Of course, another main reason you would buy such a book is to look at great examples of street photography, and enjoy the author's personal style. Sadly, most of what is contained in this book is very commonplace, with little to recommend it. I'm looking for poignancy, juxtaposition, humor, energy... all of those things which make a street photograph transcend time and location to speak to the larger human experience, but I'm having a hard time finding it in the work the author has chosen to show. It's almost as if the decisive moment was not waited for. I would like to be kinder, but I'm left with a feeling that this book was rushed to press by a publisher who wants to get in on the rising tide of modern street photography and not as a showcase of unique and powerful craft. Also, the book itself is of very low quality. The cover and pages both feel too thin and just cheap.Edit: 6-20-15. After letting this book settle in further, I actually took an additional star off of my review. Often street images bear multiple visits to really soak in their flavor and contents, but I can honestly count on one hand the images in this book that even interest me. On the other hand, dozens of them exhibit what I would call the wrong moment, or lack of patience or vision... "Uninspiring" is the word that really describes the author's work here depicted, just as "uninspired" is the right word to describe his advice. There is just no insight to be had here. I wanted to like this book, but it has left me quite cold.

Immerse Yourself in a Creative Perspective By Mandragora Gordon Lewis' Street Photography is both a creative inspiration and also a pleasure to read. If I had to summarize it in one word, it would be "witty." By that I mean that Lewis is elegant, illuminating, and often funny, both in his writing and in his photography. Being able to hear his voice come through in his writing and in his photography (and the photography of others that he includes) really helps the reader understand Lewis's creative point of view. He shows us instead of telling us, and it is contagious. This is a book for someone who already knows how to use their camera technically, and who wants to improve their aesthetic/artistic ability in the domain of street photography. Obviously, the ability to "read" street photography competently helps one's creative ability to produce quality street photography. Because Lewis's voice comes through in both prose and images, one learns how to see the world as Lewis does.Let me give a simple example. Early in the book, he shows a photo of rich reds, complex architectural structures, and warm sideways light streaming in to bring it all alive. Only after admiring the photo did I read the caption, where I discovered, to my shock, that the photo was taken in the entryway of a Target department store (!!). When I looked back again at the photo, I realized that it could well have been my own local Target, and I wondered: how many times have I blithely walked past this incredible play of light, color, and structure, not bothering to look, because it was a Target? Throughout, Lewis shows how apparently boring everyday scenes can be turned into very interesting photos--if you just know how to look.I have many photography and art books with titles that have variants on "how to see," "how to read," "seeing like a photographer" and so on. Rarely do I come away from them--whatever else their merits are--feeling like I am more capable of seeing like a photographer or of reading photography; like anything else, such knowledge is slowly and painstakingly acquired. Yet this beautiful little book Street Photography delivers as much of that as one could reasonably hope in a surprisingly compact space.Again, I think what made the book work so well is the unusual connection between words and images. Commonly in photography books, the images are stunning and the words are either so few that they don't do much, or so turgid that you know why the author became a photographer and not a writer! This connection between words and images immerses the reader in Lewis' creative point of view. I'm glad for the few hours I spent in it, and I look forward to revisiting this book next time my creativity seems dried up, to remind myself that I have merely forgotten how to see.

The Pimsleur Method We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”: The Principle of Anticipation In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind. Core Vocabulary Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson. Graduated Interval Recall Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory. Organic Learning You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture. Learning in Context Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success. Active Participation The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English. The Italian Language Italian is the official language of Italy and San Marino, and one of the official languages of Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia. Italian is spoken by about 58 million people in Italy, 24,000 in San Marino, 840,000 in Switzerland, another million in other European countries, and approximately 5 million in North and South America. Historically, Italian is a daughter language of Latin. Italian uses the Roman alphabet and the pronunciation of the language follows the spelling very closely. An off-beat and exuberant guide to everything, The Smartest Book in the World gives you everything you need to know to always be the smartest person in the room. The Smartest Book in the World: A Lexicon of Literacy, A Rancorous Reportage, A Concise Curriculum of Cool, by Greg Proops

Review "Snarky history and piquant criticism as delivered by the smartass in the back of the classroom." (Kirkus)"It turns out Whose Line Is It Anyway? only hinted at its former in-house player Greg Proops' gift of gab, which is constantly on display in the weekly soliloquy he calls a "Proopscast." Armed with a lifetime of accumulated trivia, reckless tales of youthful adventure, exquisite diction, and an unflappable comic pomposity, Proops dissects both consequential and ridiculous news items while unburdening whatever is bothering him. From crowd interactions to any given newspaper headline, each bit of stimulus serves as a way to take a mad flume ride through the sluices of Proops' brain." (Rolling Stone "The 20 Best Comedy Podcasts Right Now" on "The Smartest Man in the World")"Some of the boldest comedy on the podcasting frontier right now. Proops proved himself a keen improviser on Whose Line Is It Anyway?… but his performance there only hinted at how nimble he is." (Rolling Stone on "The Smartest Man in the World" podcast)“Greg Proops’s bold, never-boring voice takes center stage in this live recording of his renowned podcast.” (New York Times on "The Smartest Man in the World" podcast)"A terrifically random appreciation of cultural touchstones." (Publishers Weekly)"This book is plenty glib, plenty sly, and pretty damn wise. It is also quick, funny, and, often, pointedly true." (Vinton Rafe McCabe, New York Journal of Books)

About the Author Greg Proops is a stand-up comic from San Francisco, best known for his unpredictable appearances on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, which is back on TV on the CW network. Mr. Proopdog has a chart-topping podcast called “The Smartest Man in the World,” which he has recorded live from around the world including Paris, London, Amsterdam, Oslo, New Zealand, Finland, Montreal, Brooklyn, San Francisco, Melbourne, Dublin, Edinburgh, Hollywood, a ship off St. Marten, and somehow, Cleveland. The podcast is available at Proopcast.com and on iTunes. Proops has been a voice actor in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and played Bob in Bob the Builder. He has been a guest on @Midnight on Comedy Central, Red Eye, The Late, Late Show, and Chelsea Lately. He lives in Hollywood. It’s not that bad, really.

INTRODUCTION

Hurray, hurrah, you made it to The Smartest Book in the World. You are now officially more inquisitive than all your bored friends. In your hands you hold a clamorous compendium, a rancorous reportage, a lexicon of literacy. This is the burning bush, the Rosetta stone, the Fountain of Youth, the Grail to all the funnest knowledge and most freaktastical answers to the questions you’ve never asked, like: Which Roman emperor would be the best first baseman? and Does vodka go with vodka? You know, the vitals. Lots of comedians write first-person memoirs of their hilarious experiences in show business. This is not a bad thing. We like to see comedians get work. Sometimes they tell stories about their dog or people they shagged. This book is not one of those. I don’t have a dog. The people I know don’t have dog stories, either. Not even shaggy ones. To be sure, the experiences are there, but this round it’s better to mine the vast worlds outside one’s career and troll for laughs and the occasional fact. What makes you so smart? I hear you ask. Stop sniveling. It does not happen overnight. One must spend years traveling, studying, and performing to rapt, attentive, worshipful crowds. Since that was practically impossible, I self-anointed and did a Proopcast. The knowledge collected is for us to share. You will be excited, then ashamed, then inflamed, then engaged. Thank you for buying this. If you stole it, well done, you. You are going to make your way in this world. If you borrowed it, return it full. Let us take to the ether.

Proops at his best By Alee This is an hilarious, erudite treatment of a wide range of topics: music, history, art, books, baseball, poetry, drugs, Women, politics and more. If you have ever listened to his podcast, it's similar, but much, much richer. Proops is intelligent, irreverent, outrageous and just plain funny on every topic. His recounting of baseball history and his casting of baseball teams of Presidents, Roman emperors, women, etc., are priceless. A really fun listen.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Funny, Insightful, and, Yes, Damn Smart By Vinton Rafe McCabe If you know Proops's podcast, "The Smartest Man in the World," then you know what to expect from this book, as it could stand as a transcript of the weekly production. But that in no way hinders the complete pleasure that the Smartest BOOk turns out to be. For me, the various baseball dream teams stand out both for humor and insight (which are two elements that the book shares with the 'cast), and the plans by which famous works of art can be stolen are sheer genius. If you don't already listen devoutly to Smartest Man, then this book is the perfect way to jump on board. As for Proops himself, he's sort of Will Rogers meets Spalding Gray meets Lenny Bruce. He's one of the best comics working today, as well as perhaps the most articulate and, yes, smartest liberal voices of this generation.Buy the book and listen to the podcast.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Must have book for any Proop Kitten library By Carol Having much fan love for Greg, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. He discusses his enjoyment of movies, baseball, books, poetry, etc. using his wit, intelligence, and no nonsense way of looking at some subjects. For those of you who listen to his podcasts much, if not most, of this book will be familiar as some of Greg's favorite things to talk about and give a little more insight to his thoughts on all subjects Proopworthy. Loved it (inferred exclamation point)
