Just as Masters and Johnson were pioneers in the study of human sexuality, so Dr. John Gottman has revolutionized the study of marriage. As a professor of psychology at the University of Washington and the founder and director of the Seattle Marital and Family Institute, he has studied the habits of married couples in unprecedented detail over the course of many years. His findings, and his heavily attended workshops, have already turned around thousands of faltering marriages.        This book is the culmination of his life's work: the seven principles that guide couples on the path toward a harmonious and long-lasting relationship. Straightforward in their approach, yet profound in their effect, these principles teach partners new and startling strategies for making their marriage work. Gottman helps couples focus on each other, on paying attention to the small day-to-day moments that, strung together, make up the heart and soul of any relationship. Being thoughtful about ordinary matters provides spouses with a solid foundation for resolving conflict when it does occur and finding strategies for living with those issues that cannot be resolved.        Packed with questionnaires and exercises whose effectiveness has been proven in Dr. Gottman's workshops, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work is the definitive guide for anyone who wants their relationship to attain its highest potential. The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work is the result of Dr. John Gottman's many years of closely observing thousands of marriages. This kind of longitudinal research has never been done before. Based on his findings, he has culled seven principles essential to the success of any marriage.Maintain a love map. Foster fondness and admiration. Turn toward instead of away. Accept influence. Solve solvable conflicts. Cope with conflicts you can't resolve. Create shared meaning.Dr. Gottman's unique questionnaires and exercises will guide couples on the road to revitalizing their marriage, or making a strong one even better.

Dr. Gottman is the author of more than two hundred professional journal articles and forty-two books, as well as the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for his extensive contributions to marriage and family research.NAN SILVER is a former editor in chief of Health magazine and coauthor, with Dr. Gottman, of What Makes Love Last: and Why Marriages Succeed or Fail.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Chapter 1Inside the Seattle Love Lab: The Truth about Happy Marriages It's a surprisingly cloudless Seattle morning as newlyweds Mark and Janice Gordon sit down to breakfast. Outside the apartment's picture window, the waters of Montlake cut a deep-blue swath, while runners jog and geese waddle along the lakeside park. Mark and Janice are enjoying the view as they munch on their French toast and share the Sunday paper. Later Mark will probably switch on the football game while Janice chats over the phone with her mom in St. Louis.        All seems ordinary enough inside this studio apartment--until you notice the three video cameras bolted to the wall, the microphones clipped talk-show style to Mark's and Janice's collars, and the Holter monitors strapped around their chests. Mark and Janice's lovely studio with a view is really not their apartment at all. It's a laboratory at the University of Washington in Seattle, where for sixteen years I have spearheaded the most extensive and innovative research ever into marriage and divorce.        As part of one of these studies, Mark and Janice (as well as forty-nine other randomly selected couples) volunteered to stay overnight in our fabricated apartment, affectionately known as the Love Lab. Their instructions were to act as naturally as possible, despite my team of scientists observing them from behind the one-way kitchen mirror, the cameras recording their every word and facial expression, and the sensors tracking bodily signs of stress or relaxation, such as how quickly their hearts pound. (To preserve basic privacy, the couples were monitored only from nine a.m. to nine p.m. and never while in the bathroom.) The apartment comes equipped with a fold-out sofa, a working kitchen, a phone, TV, VCR, and CD player. Couples were told to bring their groceries, their newspapers, their laptops, needlepoint, hand weights, even their pets--whatever they would need to experience a typical weekend.        My goal has been nothing more ambitious than to uncover the truth about marriage--to finally answer the questions that have puzzled people for so long: Why is marriage so tough at times? Why do some lifelong relationships click, while others just tick away like a time bomb? And how can you prevent a marriage from going bad--or rescue one that already has?Predicting Divorce with 91 Percent AccuracyAfter years of research I can finally answer these questions. In fact, I am now able to predict whether a couple will stay happily together or lose their way. I can make this prediction after listening to the couple interact in our Love Lab for as little as five minutes! My accuracy rate in these predictions averages 91 percent over three separate studies. In other words, in 91 percent of the cases where I have predicted that a couple's marriage would eventually fail or succeed, time has proven me right. These predictions are not based on my intuition or preconceived notions of what marriage "should" be, but on the data I've accumulated over years of study.        At first you might be tempted to shrug off my research results as just another in a long line of newfangled theories. It's certainly easy to be cynical when someone tells you they've figured out what really makes marriages last and can show you how to rescue or divorce-proof your own. Plenty of people consider themselves to be experts on marriage--and are more than happy to give you their opinion of how to form a more perfect union.        But that's the key word--opinion. Before the breakthroughs my research provided, point of view was pretty much all that anyone trying to help couples had to go on. And that includes just about every qualified, talented, and well-trained marriage counselor out there. Usually a responsible therapist's approach to helping couples is based on his or her professional training and experience, intuition, family history, perhaps even religious conviction. But the one thing it's not based on is hard scientific evidence. Because until now there really hasn't been any rigorous scientific data about why some marriages succeed and others flop.        For all of the attention my ability to predict divorce has earned me, the most rewarding findings to come out of my studies are the Seven Principles that will prevent a marriage from breaking up.Emotionally Intelligent MarriagesWhat can make a marriage work is surprisingly simple. Happily married couples aren't smarter, richer, or more psychologically astute than others. But in their day-to-day lives, they have hit upon a dynamic that keeps their negative thoughts and feelings about each other (which all couples have) from overwhelming their positive ones. They have what I call an emotionally intelligent marriage.I can predict whether a couple will divorce after watching and listening to them for just five minutes.Recently, emotional intelligence has become widely recognized as an important predictor of a child's success later in life. The more in touch with emotions and the better able a child is to understand and get along with others, the sunnier that child's future, whatever his or her academic IQ. The same is true for relationships between spouses. The more emotionally intelligent a couple--the better able they are to understand, honor, and respect each other and their marriage--the more likely that they will indeed live happily ever after. Just as parents can teach their children emotional intelligence, this is also a skill that a couple can be taught. As simple as it sounds, it can keep husband and wife on the positive side of the divorce odds. Why Save Your Marriage?Speaking of those odds, the divorce statistics remain dire. The chance of a first marriage ending in divorce over a forty-year period is 67 percent. Half of all divorces will occur in the first seven years. Some studies find the divorce rate for second marriages is as much as 10 percent higher than for first-timers. The chance of getting divorced remains so high that it makes sense for all married couples--including those who are currently satisfied with their relationship--to put extra effort into their marriages to keep them strong.

Powerful, Practical, and Personal By Dr Conrade Yap When it was first published back in 1999, this book made a huge impact that shot authors and marriage counselors, John Gottmann and Nan Silver to fame, becoming their most popular book. Using interviews, research, and scienfic data analysis, the authors begin with a startling claim: They can predict an impending divorce with a 91% accuracy just by looking at various signs. Moreover, they criticize most marital therapies as ineffective. They can recognize the four horsemen of the relationship apocalypse. They can also tell the health of a marriage by asking a few questions and observing the responses. Fortunately, they are able to come up with seven principles not just to make marriage work, but to sustain it over the long haul. In brief, the principles are:1) Learning to enhance one's love maps2) Nurturing fondness and admiration for each other3) Turning toward each other instead of away from4) Letting One's Partner Influence You5) Solve the Solvable problems6) Overcoming gridlock over unsolvable ones7) Creating shared meaningFilled with plenty of tips and advice, the authors know that marriage has far more complications in real life. In fact, one criticism of the first edition of this book is the heavy dependence on data and scientific analysis, just like a book having lots of theory but little practice. This second edition tries to correct this imbalance by putting their findings to work through the Gottmann Institute. Using direct support for couples, marital therapies, and training sessions, they have accumulated more statistics on the Seven Principles. They claim that couples who read the book without additional professional assistance "were significantly happier in their relationship." Not only that, the helpfulness continued even after a year. Updated for more diverse groups, the book now includes findings for same-sex couples, new parents, and mixed marriages. The questionnaires are updated. The statistics are refreshed. The numbers are crunched with consistent results.Let me offer three thoughts on this book. First, this book speaks deeply into the issues of marriage. The way the authors have written show how much they understood couples and the marital struggles. Many of the examples given have struck a chord in readers deeply. The love maps questionnaire for instance, force individuals to dig a little deeper into their hearts prior to answering the simple Yes/No questions. It is not easy to simply tick off an answer thoughtlessly. They show us that marriage is not about "knowing" each other mentally, it is a lot more about connecting with one another at every level. While reading a book alone may not necessarily heal a marriage, it can certainly orientate any marriage more constructively. Second, this book is high on implementation. In other words, many of the suggestions are easy to understand and implement. While there are lots of scientific work and data analysis, one may accuse the authors of analysis till paralysis. That is not true, especially in this new and updated edition. The chapter on "Coping with Typical Solvable Problems" is a case in point. The authors take a break between Principles 5 and 6 to include some modern distractions like the electronic additions, relations with in-laws, money matters, housework expectations, sex, and the ubiquitous nuisance: Stress. Third, this book contains many packages of helpful tips. Those who like to have ready to remember strategies will appreciate them. Some of the more notable ones are:Six Signs of Failing MarriageSeven Week Course in Fondness and AdmirationStress Reducing ConversationsSeven Tips for Listening to Fears and SadnessTwo Kinds of Marital Conflicts: Perpetual and SolvableSeven Steps to Dealing with Emotional InjuriesSigns of GridlocksFour Pillars of Shared MeaningThe Magic Five Hours....Even if readers do not agree with all of the principles, I am convinced that at some point in the book, they would be touched. I have read this book more than twice and are still amazed at the dynamism and wisdom of the teachings. This book remains my favourite book for marriages of all types.Rating: 5 stars of 5.conradeThis book is provided to me courtesy of Harmony Books, a division of Random House Book Publishers and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The advice is very simple and easy to put into practice. I can already see a difference in our relationship after just a couple days of mindfully applying these principles.I would recommend this book to everyone. I have already started telling my family about it. Even if you marriage is not in trouble, these are great things to keep in mind that will definitely serve to strengthen your marriage.Dr. Gottman can predict divorce with 92% accuracy. He explains how he does so in a very informative what-not-to-do sort of way. He makes it very easy to identify things that we may be doing wrong, and he explains how to counteract those negative behaviors. This book is easy to read. It is interesting and oh-so informative. Many self-help books are chock-full of fluff and filler that is boring and redundant. I honestly did not feel that way about The Seven Principles.

It turns out that there have been so many things I took for granted and this book helped me realize exactly what my husband and I have been doing right, what we've been doing wrong and what else we can do to strengthen the bond. This saved me from so much marital grief and frustration.

At the end of the 19th century, under the benevolent patronage of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Germany became home to new scientific and technological ideas. In German universities, innovators like Albert Einstein, Max Planck, Werner Heisenberg, Max Born, Erwin Schrödinger, Wolfgang Pauli and Walther Nernst revolutionized physics and chemistry with their theories of relativity, of the atomic structure and of the quanta. Walther Nernst, a founder of physical chemistry, received the Nobel prize in 1920 for his formulation of the third law of thermodynamics. He died in 1941 in Germany, disillusioned by Hitler’s destruction of German academic life. This biography of Walther Nernst, the author’s mentor, also provides an overview of German science and technology, from its stellar rise to its rapid fall when the Nazis came to power and the vast majority of German scientists went into exile to Britain (like the author), to the United States or elsewhere to continue the tradition and spirit of the scientific revolutions started in Germany’s institutions of higher learning. “A masterly description of the spectacular rise of German science and industry at the turn of the century and of life in Germany in the pre-1933 era.” — The Times (London) “Mendelssohn’s... fascinating book... is a study of the rise and fall of German science as well as a life of Walther Nernst... as he shows, the ‘mad fanaticism’ of the Nazis blinded them, and blinded them completely, to the enormous scientific potential they had inherited in the laboratories of Weimar Germany.” — Roger Williams, Encounter

Burge I read this biography as much for some insight into the rise of German science and its fall during the Nazi years as to learn specifically about Nernst.Mendelssohn describes in vivid detail what happened in 1933 when Hitler came to power through a corrupt deal with von Hindenberg. (Blackmail essentially) .Though this bio isn't brilliantly written, its very competent. Mendelssohn gets the science and the sociology right. I recommend it.

Science magazine describes the Pascagoula River of southeast Mississippi as the last unaltered large river system in the lower 48 states and southern Canada. Along its banks and watershed, 600,000 acres of public lands - wildlife management areas, national forest, wilderness areas, national wildlife refuges, Nature Conservancy preserves - ensure the creation of a tremendous natural river system.

To explore this sanctum, authors Ernest Herndon and Scott B. Williams traveled its entire 200-plus mile length by canoe and sea kayak, respectively. Each floated one of two major tributaries, Herndon taking the Leaf, Williams the Chickasawhay. They then met on the main Pascagoula and continued on to the Gulf Coast. Along the way, the two saw alligators and ospreys, conservationists and good ole boys. They ran rapids and explored swamps, dodged logjams and investigated possible pollution sources.

The audiobook gives the armchair explorer a vivid feeling of what it would be like to float this wonderful river and provides a wealth of information about what makes it special and the problems that threaten it.

The book is published by University Press of Mississippi.

By Jessie Lee This book literally took me on a trip down these wonderful waterways. I could literally see the banks of hardwoods and Cyprus in my mind, along with the flows of each waterway. I particularly enjoyed the playful ribbing the two gentlemen engaged in, over their different choices of vessels, and their different styles of how to handle a morning waking up on the river. Very enjoyable and I highly recommend it!

I've floated and fished on several stretches of the Pascagoula, Chickasawhay and Leaf rivers and consider it my home river. My ancestors settled on the upper Pascagoula before this area was part of the US and my family once owned land on the river with virgin timber. GREAT BOOK.

Being able to morph the ARM design smoothly from the earlier design / methodology we used to teach MIPS processors is great. It simplifies teaching, and I think teaching ARM is a better choice than MIPS because it is more relevant from a practical point of view.

Best PDF Ebook Online The Gold Fields of Nova Scotia: A Prospectors Handbook (Classic Reprint), by Walter H. Prest

Excerpt from The Gold Fields of Nova Scotia: A Prospectors HandbookMr Prest has devoted the past forty years of his life to an intimate and practical study of the gold fields of Nova Scotia and has embodied in the memoir herewith the net results of his observation, couched in such language as will appeal to the average prospector who devotes his attention to the worthy and often unrewarded labor of discovering and bringing into existence, profitable ore deposits. Nova Scotia the most eastern province of Canada has long been known as the location of a large and valuable area of auriferous bearing rocks and the work done in the past which has resulted in an officially recorded production of gold equal to over seventeen million dollars is the best evidence of the future which awaits safe conservative development in opening up the innumerable unworked deposits which dot the province. In mining, success turns very often upon apparent trifles, and observation to be of value must be minute, painstaking and long continued. In addition there must be brought to the task, that love for the work, without which no craftsman can hope for individual thoroughness. That Mr. Prest has approached his subject with a full appreciation of the necessity and desirability of placing before serious investigators such facts as he has learned during a life time of effort will be apparent to the reader, and it is the latter who must recognize the importance of giving heed to the details of ore occurrences in Nova Scotia and the general laws which they follow, if he is to take advantage, fully of the recommendations offered. That Nova Scotia offers a splendid field for developments in connection with her gold deposits, is to repeat a truism, yet there are those who after cursory glimpsing of the ground floor are bold enough to dogmatize to the contrary and the strangest part of such a condition is that their ill considered opinions and wrongly reached conclusions at times have a weight attached to them neither justified by the writer's knowledge of his subject, his opportunities for study, or his ability to assimilate the outstanding features which make this province unique in respect to its mineral deposits.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. With over 15 years of experience in Management Information Systems (MIS) and web/mobile technologies, he enjoys discovering and applying new technologies to make our lives more enjoyable and productive. Mixed Feelings By Lawrence Baldwin After working through the online tutorial on Meteor, I wanted to learn more, so I bought this book and worked through it. I had mixed feelings about this book. On the plus side, it does teach a number of useful things about Meteor that are not covered in the online tutorial. Learning about Atmosphere, the library of Meteor add-ons, seeing some examples of using Iron Router for created multi-page apps, a more detailed walk-through of developing iOS apps, and simply walking through lots of examples one by one are all very helpful. On the minus side, I found far too much of the book concerned with integrating Meteor with other packages, without enough focus on the basics (e.g. how to do more complex queries). In order to keep the examples short and simple, the book takes endless shortcuts, such as using Bootstrap to avoid adding a few lines of CSS, and it has little or no naming conventions, and in general does not set a good example for coding. It gives the impression that it is all about quick and dirty prototyping. It includes essentially nothing on debugging, testing, etc. If I plan to do any actual Meteor development, I will certainly need to buy another book--this one doesn't cover enough of the essentials. The longest example in the book, "Creating a coloring book with the Canvas element," I was unable to get to work, even after downloading the code from the Packt website. There were error messages that came up, and this may have been my error, but the book provided me with no help in figuring out what had gone wrong, and I found nowhere to submit a question (other than his suggestion I post to Stack Overflow). On the other hand, I did enjoy Strack's breezy style. Being introduced to lots of packages, some of which I was unfamiliar with, had some interest. I certainly understand Meteor far better than I did before beginning the book (not hard to do). I wanted to like it better than I did. Perhaps if I had read a different Meteor book before reading this one, I would have appreciated more the specific things it brought forward.

If you are looking for book full of examples to learn how to do most of the things in Meteor, this is a great book. I would suggest the readers to have expectations of reading a cookbook and not whole app development guide. The book covers pretty nicely what it is supposed to be. Learn the core concepts of Meteor from Meteor site and develop some fun projects. Read this book then and you will appreciate it definitely.

1 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Meteor a real game changer or not? By Brendan Boyd Meteor is now one in a very long line of new Java Script libraries to hit the IT world. This book gives you quite a few real world examples that you can use to enhance your knowledge of the new Meteor JavaScript library. Whether or not Meteor will take off like a comet (pun very much intended) and surpass some of the other more in vogue Javascript libraries like AngularJS, Knockout, Bootstrap, and JQuery still pretty much remains to be seen. Many people say that Meteor is a real game changer in that respect, but then again they were saying that about JQuery, then Knockout.js and now they are saying the same thing about AngularJs and Twitter Bootstrap. The examples are straight forward and concise and they seem to be worth your while to go through because I have always found that the best way to learn a new language is by doing actual real world examples which this book provides. The only drawback that I can see, is that the author really doesn't walk you through things step by step enough which means sometimes you have to take best guess and hope that you guess right. But overall a pretty good book if you want to get into the new Meteor Javascript library.

MATLAB Programming for Engineers (Activate Learning with these NEW titles from Engineering!), by Stephen J. Chapman

Review "The big challenge in teaching this course is that once students get beyond the basics of the programming syntax, they have difficulty in approaching and solving more difficult problems. The author does a good job of both explaining and showing how to do just that.""I am currently using this textbook, because of its simplistic and easy to digest nature for students to understand.""I especially like the emphasis on top-down program design and the use of functions to decompose problem into sub-problems."

About the Author Stephen J. Chapman received a BS in Electrical Engineering from Louisiana State University (1975), an MSE in Electrical Engineering from the University of Central Florida (1979), and pursued further graduate studies at Rice University. From 1975 to 1980, he served as an officer in the U. S. Navy, assigned to teach Electrical Engineering at the U. S. Naval Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida. From 1980 to 1982, he was affiliated with the University of Houston, where he ran the power systems program in the College of Technology. From 1982 to 1988 and from 1991 to 1995, he served as a Member of the Technical Staff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Laboratory, both at the main facility in Lexington, Massachusetts, and at the field site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. While there, he did research in radar signal processing systems. He ultimately became the leader of four large operational range instrumentation radars at the Kwajalein field site (TRADEX, ALTAIR, ALCOR, and MMW). From 1988 to 1991, Chapman served as a research engineer at Shell Development Company in Houston, Texas, where he did seismic signal processing research. He was also affiliated with the University of Houston, where he continued to teach on a part-time basis. Mr. Chapman is currently Manager of Systems Modeling and Operational Analysis for BAE Systems Australia, in Melbourne, Australia. He is the technical leader of a team that has developed a model of how naval ships defend themselves. This model contains more than 400,000 lines of MATLAB code written over more than a decade. Mr. Chapman is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (and several of its component societies). He is also a member of the Institution of Engineers (Australia).

The Roar of Smoke: A Book of the Meldborn, by Candace Carrabus

Review An exciting and original fantasy novel that touches on family, friendship, love, and discovering one's true strength. --Leah Gonzalez, Reader's Favorite. A well-written, evocative tale, drawing in the details of a country crushed by despair and invaded by a ruthless army, seen from the point of view of a teenage girl. Tressida's fear of her own power and her conflicts with authority figures will draw you back to your own teens, and her search for self-determination and a mentor she can trust is compelling subject matter. The story is fantasy at its best, with danger, magic, and fascinating allusions to the ancient Celtic mythology of the horse gods of fertility and protection. Carrabus's vivid storytelling will keep you turning pages and dreaming right to the end.--J.C. Steel, Reader's Favorite

She has studied horses, and their care, since she was a child. But the horses are gone and no one knows why. Suddenly, Gran comes to her and tells her to get Galiann, a young girl, and leave Cirq with her. The Derrians are overtaking the city and it is not safe for Tressida and Galiann. Both girls are to make their way to Siblan and find Warden Kadre and sage Marzak. Gran tells Tressida to be safe and not spin her smoke. Not spin her smoke? What is Gran talking about? As Tressida and Galiann make their way to Siblan, Tressida realizes she is different but she does not understand what is happening. Once they reach Siblan, Tressida discovers Warden Kadre is her grandfather and tries to explain what she is. Tressida is a meldborn meaning half sage and half crone....translation, very powerful. As Tressida tries to find her place, the Horsecaller arrives and brings the horses. The horses cause the ground to become fertile with plants and wildlife abounding. Shortly after the arrival of the horses, Tressida learns more about being a meldborn and her life takes a dark turn. She learns of family she never had, who want her for their own personal gain, a head crone who wants her dead, a sage who claims he just wants to train her, and a father she thought was dead.Candace spins a story of magic, death, betrayal, and love. We are introduced to Tressida, Gran, Perren, and Galiann and given some history on the characters. But Tressida and Gran's characters are built throughout the story. What is Gran and how does that impact Tressida? Are all of the rhymes Gran taught Tressida really simple spells of the crones? What is a meldborn and what power do they weld? The author gives the reader a glimpse into each of these. As characters are introduced, we are introduced into a world filled with magic, but given just enough tidbits to keep us wanting more. I cannot wait for Book 2.5 starsReviewed by Crystal M.

A heroine harnesses mysterious powers against evil By Readatthespeedofdiesel With a heroine who has just been dealt several surprises, the story propelled me right away into a fascinating world where I felt like I was along for a ride through adventure to find out how she learned to use her mysterious powers. I really enjoyed finding what she'd do to save herself and others around her against peril and evil. I enjoyed the story, the vivid storytelling and this author's talent and detail, including her experience with horses, which add another rich layer. Recommended!

Can't wait to read about her relationship with her long lost father. I also am wanting to see her learning how to develop her skills. I'd love to see her bring back her friend Galian. And a love interest would be nice also.I have to say this book really surprised me, because for some reason I am not really a fan of fantasy books. I basically read this one because it was written by a women that I went to junior and high school with. So I just want to say thanks Candace for opening up my mind to more adventures in reading. I loved it.

This concise book introduces nonphysicists to the core philosophical issues surrounding the nature and structure of space and time, and is also an ideal resource for physicists interested in the conceptual foundations of space-time theory. Tim Maudlin's broad historical overview examines Aristotelian and Newtonian accounts of space and time, and traces how Galileo's conceptions of relativity and space-time led to Einstein's special and general theories of relativity. Maudlin explains special relativity with enough detail to solve concrete physical problems while presenting general relativity in more qualitative terms. Additional topics include the Twins Paradox, the physical aspects of the Lorentz-FitzGerald contraction, the constancy of the speed of light, time travel, the direction of time, and more.

  • Introduces nonphysicists to the philosophical foundations of space-time theory
  • Provides a broad historical overview, from Aristotle to Einstein
  • Explains special relativity geometrically, emphasizing the intrinsic structure of space-time
  • Covers the Twins Paradox, Galilean relativity, time travel, and more
  • Requires only basic algebra and no formal knowledge of physics

Excellent for interested amatures By Michael This isn't "philosophy of physics for dummies" by any stretch, but for someone who last took physics in 1975 and who only has taken an intro to philosophy course, this was an excellent overview of historical and modern philosophy of the physics of space and time. The author uses next to no math (thank goodness) and his prose expositions are clear and to the point. I imagine the book would also appeal to those with more knowledge of both subjects, as the author suggests that some of his positions are controversial. I'm looking forward to part 2 on matter based upon his exposition of space and time in this volume. Highly recommended.

An excellent, concise survey of thought on space and time By Colin Temple A concise, accessible, enjoyable, responsible and rewarding survey of the historical development of the physicist's conception of space and time.I say it's concise because this volume weighs in at about 200 pages and covers spatial/temporal geometries from Aristotle, Newton, Galileo and Einstein. There's certainly a bit of math in the book, but not so much as to exclude the layperson. The descriptions and diagrams provided are about as clear as they can be, given the subject.I say it's responsible because the author makes use of clear arguments, makes assumptions and missing pieces clear and follows up with recommended readings. The text is rewarding because it clears up many misconceptions about the theories it covers and gives a fresh, clean take on the subject. I can certainly say this book helped sharpen my understanding of special & general relativity. There's more physics than philosophy in this text. It serves as an excellent description of space and time for a philosopher. I don't see that it would give the physics student a strong philosophical hook, though it's certainly more philosophical than the average physics text. (The exception would be a relatively sizable discussion of the correspondence between Leibniz and Clarke on Newtonian absolute space, which I enjoyed having studied that debate previously.)Overall a worthwhile read for anyone looking for an introduction to philosophy of physics, or anyone who could stand to improve their understanding of the theories presented.

First, it should be understood that this is not so much a philosophy of physics as it is physics for philosophers. This volume does not so much cover the many philosophical issues that have arisen from millennia of trying to know the rules governing the material world. Instead, it introduces the scientific issues that underlie these questioning traditions. That said, this is a brilliant introduction to the enigmatic field of physics, tilted toward the philosopher's perspective. Most of the writers here are physicists not philosophers. But the tone is not overly mathematical. It is refreshingly buoyant, dwelling more in the realm of meaning and presence than in the cold interplay of systems.Somehow I am reminded of Parlett's THE Book of Word Games -- perhaps it is the pleasure that this kind of inquiry creates, rather than any topical connection.Highly recommended for philosophers, the philosophically inclined, or those simply wishing to understand what physics may MEAN -- not simply SAYS. For those who wish to be filled with the brilliant lines, spaces, and internal structures that physics and its philosophical implications can create in the soul.
