About the Author Daniel Wieczorek was born in 1947 in Ionia, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Forestry in 1969. He moved to Oregon to work in the field of forestry in 1971. That was followed by a move to Alaska in 1975, where he continued his career in forestry. After about a 14 year career in forestry, Daniel decided to do something different and he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in The Philippines from 1985 - 1987. Upon completion of his Peace Corps service he returned to Alaska, where he attended the University of Alaska - Fairbanks and received an M.B.A. in 1991. This was followed by a move to South Korea in 1992, where Daniel taught English to Korean people wishing to improve their English Language skills. Daniel's next stop was in New York City, where he worked as temporary staff at Deutsche Bank from 1998 - 2001. He left NYC in March 2001 and moved on to his present home in Mitaka City, Tokyo, Japan. He is teaching English in Japan and at this time he's been teaching as a career for about 17 years. He has been hiking, climbing and doing photography since he was about 12 years old. At the present time he likes to go hiking/mountain climbing at every possible opportunity with his partner Kazuya Numazawa.

21 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Before you spurge on this, do consider... By Jonathan I would be warry of spending too many of your hard earned dollars on this book. I am a new fan to Hellboy, and absolutely love Mignola's art. However, the reason I would be heasitant about recommending this art book is that there is very little new art in it. Most of it is just rehashed covers, pages and posters. Probably about 10% of it is stuff that you've never seen before; which in my mind, does not warrant the hefty price tag. If you have all the books in the series then you already have 90% of the art found in this book. The sketches and other doodles that are only in this book can most likely be found floating around the net if you look hard enough for it.

It's defintely worth it, whether bought from Amazon or some other vendor. The Art of Hellboy is an oversized cloth-bound harcover with embossing, metallic ink, and a glued illustration on the cover. A fairly short introduction gets you set up for the barrage of Hellboy-related art that is to follow! You get color works, covers, pin-ups, sketches, preliminary drawings, comic page roughs, completed comic pages, concept art... the list goes on and on. The only downside is that many of these pieces have either been used in other Hellboy books or have appeared elsewhere. Still, it's nice to see them in a larger size. This is a beautiful book, end of story!

Beautiful Art, Not Enough Process By The Critic Mike Mignola's amazing art for Hellboy looks very different from anything else being used in comics today. His distinct linework and inking style, combined with a well-honed eye for panel layout makes his artwork a perfect complement to his stories.That said, this book is mostly a collection of finished art, covers and promotional pieces. What I really expected from an "Art of" book was process, sketches, and perhaps some discussion of technique. A fair comparison would be the recent Usagi Yojimbo art book or the Blacksad Sketch Files.Maybe one of these days Mr. Mignola will put out a "Making of Hellboy" book that fills the gaps. The few sketches and thumbnails in this book really aren't enough.

Plumb Hudson was such a wonderful pastoral writer (although his novel 'A Crystal Age' pushes well passed the pastoral), full of sensitive observations of nature - geography, buildings (yes, they are part of nature too), people (usually humble people) and especially birds. His childhood took place in Argentina but he always had a yearning for England. He did write about that other world too. At the start of 'Afoot in England' it appears he was undertaking his walks - free of guide books quite deliberately - with his wife. But she disappears midway through this book, is not refered too - not even obliquely - any more and I wonder what sort of tragedy might have marked his life at the time of writing. But whatever might have happened it didn't impair his ability to continue observing and reporting in a down-to-earth way (in comparison to, say, the somewhat aloof short stories of Rabindranath Tagore).Other recommendations:W H Hudson novels - 'A Crystal Age', 'Green Mansions'W H Hudson non-fiction - 'A Shepherd's Life', 'Idle Days in Patagonia'W H Hudson autobiography 'Far Away and Long Ago'Rabindranath Tagore - selected short stories

Hudson (the initials standing for William Henry) is certainly NOT a guide book - something the author explicitly wants the reader to understand from the first page on.Originally written in 1909, Mr. Hudson describes walks, buildings, people, villages, paths, trees, animals - most of all birds - he saw, observed or met during the early 1900s.There is mention of places we can actually see for ourselves, such as Calleva (now Silchester), which at the time of the author's visits was just beginning to attract public interest and a lonely place free of tourists, or Stonehenge, where he spends some very cold, dark hours along with several hundred men wanting to observe the sunrise, only to go back at a later date to repeat the experience on his own, which he then finds very rewarding.Some rivers and villages are named, but by no means all of them, and so it would be quite a difficult undertaking if anyone wished to walk on Hudson's traces.At one point, he despairs of the weather - "has there ever been a June as cold and wet as that of 1906?" - something that made me think of what I have been hearing from my relatives and friends in England as well as reading on some of the blogs I follow.Everything he writes about is neatly wrapped up into a chapter; some chapters talk about a particular place (such as Salisbury Cathedral) or a particular person (such as an elderly lady who told him the story of his life over the weeks he stayed at her cottage), while there is another chapter entirely dedicated to Robert Bloomfield's novel-length poem "The Famer's Boy", with many quotations.As an ornithologist, the author knows and writes a great deal about the birds he observes during his walks, but this is never boring. The book does have its lengths (for instance, the aforementioned chapter about "The Famer's Boy"), but it is entertaining, interesting and not without humour. If nothing else, it shows how more than a 100 years ago, people dealt with early forms of tourism, from the mass to the individual kind.Some of the words the author uses are naturally different to how a writer would express similar ideas now, but that only adds to the charm of this book.From the variety of topics Mr. Hudson covers in the 25 chapters, I guess he'd be a well-read blogger if he lived today.

Anyone that has had difficulty reading a map, or has gotten lost while navigating with a map would benefit from this book. He starts by describing that maps should have the year they were made in the margin. They shouldn’t be older than three years. He talks about finding compass directions on a map. Describes the difference between large scale and small scale maps. I didn’t know there was a difference. The book talks about accessing online maps. He explains when navigating with a map that you count the streets. He suggests you don’t navigate by street names alone as they can’t always be read. I think this is one of the reasons I sometimes have difficulty when reading a map. I can’t find the street sign and waste time looking for it, or turn on the wrong street and get lost. He talks about using landmarks so you don’t get lost when staying at a hotel. He describes what colors and symbols mean on a map.

I had heard about people hiking the entire Appalachian Trail and I thought I would like to do that someday. So I started to do some research and purchased a few books on hiking the AT. This is one of the books I purchased. After reading this book, I am rethinking about hiking the trail, but I still really liked the book. I liked Paul's personal story, but I also really enjoyed the hiking stories

One Small Community Dealing With Change--As We All Do By Philip Calcagno Beyond Fair Trade is well written and enlightening as one small story in the continuing saga of the human race. We learn about the Akha, a group of people that migrated from Burma to Thailand and its problems in adapting to a new area where they are low on the totem pole (so to speak). Thanks to a Thai genius among them (Wicha Promyond) and to hard work and perseverance, they are able to make a better life for their community by raising and selling coffee beans. Mr. Pendergrast gives us the background of the individuals involved. It provided me with a sense of empathy for the individuals, especially for the members of the Akha people. Of course, the portrait of the peripatetic Wicha was most enjoyable. What a character! Haven’t known many (any?) people so intelligent, so persistent, so engaging, so determined. He, along with sympathetic investors from Canada persuade the Akha to start a coffee company and raise coffee beans. The author covers the many difficulties in making such a venture profitable. At the end of the book, we see that the venture is going well, but we don’t know if the investors will actually make a profit. In any case, life has changed drastically for the Akha. This is no fairy tale. The author describes the good and the bad that comes along with the shift to growing coffee beans and the income it provides for a people who were among the poorest of the poor. Personal friendships and animosities are created. The Akha culture changes, not always for the better. I highly recommend Beyond Fair Trade because it spotlights one community that is really representative of all the communities throughout the world that are fighting for survival as the world changes around them. Actually, that’s the story of all of us.

Gets off to a great start then falters By Scott Garren The book starts out with an engaging story that paints all sides in the Middle East as understandable people. I enjoyed the first third immensely. The middle third get very complex with too many people to keep track of and the two heroines end up in bed with everyone - not as good as the beginning. In the last third many of the characters get killed off and the plot becomes a good guy/ bad guy pot boiler with one dimensional characters and a predictable ending.

By M1 The large print NIV Bible is really not that large, it is comfortably readable! I can only imagine how small the non-large print bible would be.The Bible comes in a nice storage box, and the bible is covered in a flexible black leather style cover. I have given 3 of these as gift to friends who read from it every day. They tell me how wonderful it is and other people who see it enjoy it also.

Martin shows anybody fortunate enough to read this book that honor, courage and compassion exists in all living beings, we simply have yet to figure out how to communicate these traits with one another, human, dog, and as I am beginning to understand, all species. I read this book expecting to be entertained, and entertained I was! Having never traveled far I was thrilled to live in Martin and his pack of dog's world, even if only for the time I enjoyed his words. The Ireland he describes so vividly made me realize that his home, and mine are not all that different. People will bully, and the bullied will survive, grow, learn, love and become whole. This book will stay with me for a long, long time. Thank you, Martin Mckenna for writing it, and living rough, and by doing so learning how to talk to dogs, and ultimately how to reach another human being with your story.
