Fantastic jewelry projects utilizing recycled paper By iiiireader "Paper Jewelry: 55 Projects for Reusing Paper" is the first book I have read which dealt with recycling various paper for jewelry. The author, Barbara Baumann, has included a wide variety of stylish and extremely wearable projects. The recycled paper utilizes everything from old telephone books to cigarette filters to puzzle pieces and even comic books.I was surprised at how various paper can be manipulated into such different looks. The projects include many different pieces, including bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and even a belt (and a Bible Belt at that.)The photographs of the finished projects are outstanding as are those which show the various steps. There are different methods to manipulating the paper and a number of tools which are important to complete the projects in the book.Toward the end of the book, the author includes chapters on tools and techniques. I am used to seeing this information at the front of a book and was a little concerned that it might not be present. Once I saw that it was, I was happy to know that I would be able to craft the projects properly once I mastered the techniques.I have made jewelry for years and have even made a few paper origami pieces. I have not really ventured into paper jewelry to any large extent and have definitely not used recycled paper to do so. I have used paper to make new paper in the past and I do recycle, so I was extremely pleased to see the opportunity to take some of the papers I recycle and do so in a way that creates a new and lovely piece of jewelry. There are a number of projects in the book that I will be utilizing before the holiday season in order to make gifts for family and friends.More than anything, I think this book has caused me to look at previously used paper in a new way. I am looking at colors, textures, shapes, and even the printed used with an artist's eye. Before I put anything in my recycle bin and even my trash, I am now looking at it to see if there is some way I can turn it into a part of jewelry or other craft element. I am very pleased with this change in my thinking - it will allow me to create new and fun items on a budget and to do so with something that might have been trash otherwise.I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, Schiffer Publishing, via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. I will be purchasing the paper form of paperback version of this book to keep in my craft library.

By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: This books give the ins and outs of making jewelry from recycled paper. The author shows you how to get familiar with different types of paper and how to work with it. She includes 55 projects ranging from necklaces and bracelets to barrettes and earrings. The back includes tools and supplies you might use as well as a glossary of paper techniques. The book is fully illustrated with photographs and step by step instructions. It is translated from German.REVIEW: I would call this book a beginner's guide to making jewelry from paper. Some of the projects were quite nice (these were the harder to accomplish ones), but most of them looked exactly like they were--jewelry made from recycled paper. A child might wear them, but not an adult. In some cases the instructions were slightly lacking. More steps could have been included for easier use.AGE RECOMMENDATION: Ages junior high and upNOTE: I received a free ARC copy from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. They are very do-able for virtually any level crafter. If you like making jewelry and looking for a good tutorial book on working with paper this will surely give you lots of directions and ideas for your designs. If you are a paper crafter or mixed-media artist looking to get into jewelry making this would make a great guide.There are some astounding new concepts and ideas in this book like using cigarette filters as beads!!!!! I will be running right out to try this new material to work with. There are some other really innovative combinations of materials and construction techniques that I look forward to trying as well.

While recognising that approaches to investment strategy in real estate are as diverse as the asset class, the book provides a compelling and accessible case for a 'top-down' approach that should offer a useful and thought provoking reference for both students and practitioners.

Boon for Modern Greek learners By Lindoula This graded reader is a true gift for people learning Modern Greek, who - unlike Ancient Greek learners - have learned the hard way that there aren't many learning materials out there. This is one of the only books there is for anything beyond traveler's phrases, and the only one published in English since the Greek spelling system changed to monotonic accents. For that alone, it's worth its weight in gold, but the content is also engaging. Highly recommended!

Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange taught at the Angelicum for fifty years, held the first chair of spiritual theology in the Church’s history, and authored twenty-eight books and over six hundred articles. He was also the doctoral dissertation director for Pope John Paul II. Rick Peddicord's The Sacred Monster of Thomism, one encounters a man both maligned and praised in his day, although perhaps more feared than lauded, Fr. Reginald Garigou-Lagrange, O.P. It should not surprise us that Garigou-Lagrange, a man who devoted his entire life to the explication of the truths of the Christian faith, would be attacked in a world that wished to rid itself of dogma and extinguish any pangs of hypocrisy arising from society's espousal of nominal Christianity. Such intransigence in the face of "progress" won him many adversaries.The greatness of Peddicord's work rests not only in the Dominican's ability to situate his confrere historically but also resides in his analysis of Garigou's Thomism and how the senior friar's hunger for truth necessitated his often harsh reactions to those who wished that the Church would adjust her message in the modern world. This passion clearly emanated from his identity as a Dominican: Garigou embraced a life in which he vowed to preach His word for the salvation of souls. As such, he realized that letting the Kantian epistemology of Blondel or the heterodoxy of Laberthonnière go unchallenged would eventually imperil men's souls. A strict adherence to Neo-Thomism constituted Garigou's sword and shield.Throughout the work, the reader can easily see Garigou's motivations. In one of the most interesting segments of the book, Peddicord argues convincingly that modern theologians should not ignore Garigou-Lagrange's contributions to philosophy, theology, and spirituality, all of which pose significant challenges to current, popular hermeneutics. However, as an accomplished professor of moral theology, one wishes that the author would have touched upon the fundamental reasons why Garigou's modern opponents such as Roger Haight, Monika Hellwig, and Elizabeth Johnson work to undermine the legitimacy of the dogmatic teachings of the Magisterium. Their agenda goes beyond that of lessening the transcendence of the divine or stirring up doubt in the perpetual virginity of Mary.Still, this is an introduction, and we can only hope that the next work by Peddicord will shed more light on the tension between classical Thomism and modern theology. Regardless, The Sacred Monster is both well researched and insightful. Perhaps its greatest attribute is that it brings the thought of Garigou-Lagrange back into current theological inquiry, although one cannot be sure that the old frère dominicain will win any more allies in a world that unfortunately adheres to much of the same heterodoxy he attempted to eliminate during his life.

52 of 56 people found the following review helpful. Useful, but... By A. Keiser Peddicord's book isn't horrible, but it isn't all that great either. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an alternate biography of Fr. Lagrange in any language. We have yet to have a biography of him written from a point of view wholly sympathetic to Lagrange's.The book moves from the beginning of his life to his death and discusses several tiffs the modernists had with him, including a large portion of the Bergon/Blondel episode. A few excerpts from modernist letters against him is also included. Maritain's disagreements on social issues is also touched on-with the sympathy going to Maritain.What you get is basically a classical liberal's take on his life. The grosser objections of the modernists to Lagrange are called excessive because they aren't as tolerant as they preach folks ought to be. A few especially radical theologians are shown as having little constructive to say in comparison to the "monster"(as if this wasn't evident already). Garrigou Lagrange is presented as a pious fellow, quite bright and well-meaning, but a bit too, well, traditional (tsk, tsk). Especially interesting are a few details about his disagreements with Congar and Maritain. An especially telling omission is that after stating that he was JPII's dissertation advisor, there is no mention of the fact that Fr. Lagrange was extremely critical of that dissertation! The attempt to rehabilitate him for the neo-modernists is a bit awkward. Information of his stance against some of the the neo-Thomists (he was very much of the tradition of the now-extremely-unpopular commentator school) is curiously absent from the work as well.All in all, it's a bit short, fairly well-written, and quite fascinating at points. Mind, it isn't as good as it could be and has its faults, but it's all we have in terms of a biography. If you have a love for his works, it is definitely worth a look. But be forewarned, for the dyed-in-the-wool adherent to the commentator school of Thomism the style is sometimes cloyingly modern. I realise that this won't be much of an issue for many readers, and I highly recommend the book, but I wanted to provide a point of view not readily found on the work.

By John L Smith Jr Compiled for the non-academic person who would like to know more about the founding of the country, the original articles are nevertheless researched and written by the most authoritative historians today. The wide variety of non-boring topics covered in the short articles is excellent! There's a subject in this book for everyone. Very enjoyable reading and browsing, and should be on the desk of every liberty-loving person this year and beyond.

This is a great collection of well-researched and carefully footnoted essays on various aspects of the Revolutionary War. I especially like the way the essays are arranged in a reasonably chronological order which makes the book both interesting and effective as a teaching tool.I have subtracted one-star for the layout and graphic design of this book. More white space and breathing room for the eyes is needed. A few more black and white engravings, or better yet some colored photos of paintings, people and places, inserted at the beginning of each essay would help make this text-dense volume more appealing to the general reader.If you are an American Revolution buff, you need this book in your collection. I am already looking forward to next year's annual edition!Kim BurdickStanton, Delaware

Super, "must have" book By Ethan First, I have to disclose that I am one of those honored by the editors of JAR to have an article published in this annual edition. I never expected this when I wrote and submitted "Plotting the Sacricide of George Washington" for their consideration, but, none the less, am most pleased to see it in print and to be a part of this unique, one-of-a-kind, effort to expand the reach of Revolutionary War studies to the public at large.As a student of the war, currently pursuing a masters degree in military history with an emphasis on the Revolution, I have spent a great deal of time over the past years in researching and writing on the subject, one that is indeed of vast dimension and great interest. There is much literature available to the public from the efforts of past students of the times developed over the course of the last two centuries, including the important work of current, popular historians (Ferling, Fleming, O'Shaughnessy, McCullough, etc.) and scholars (Bailyn, Shy, Wood, Maier, Greene, etc.).However, there is virtually nothing out there that does what the editors of JAR are doing. By opening up opportunities for the avid amateur historian to contribute the results of his or her own research, accompanied by their impressions and conclusions, work that might not see the light of day, JAR is filling an important niche that might otherwise be overlooked. Further, when those articles are published on its website (www.allthingsliberty.com), the author's work is immediately made available to a huge, interested cadre of like-minded individuals who are then invited to provide their own perspective. It then becomes a community project in which many are able to further develop the story and to make it even more valuable than before. It is one of those instances where the sum of the parts is greater than any individual one and it can be an eye-opening experience.Of course, the annual edition does not include all of the on-line discourse that might have gone on with a particular article (it is, however, available in the archives), but that in no way detracts from their importance, of the interest they generate. The range of topics is impressive, the depth of research similarly so, and the writing every bit enjoyable as the professionals. Rest assured that the editors, themselves scholars on the subject, have thoroughly vetted those articles appearing in the annual edition, consistently do so with an eye towards creating an assembly of writings that will appeal to those with an interest in the compelling history of our nation's earliest moments.Yes, I may have written one of the articles, but I have also learned a great deal from those others appearing alongside, as well as those on the website. Highly recommended!!!

Bunch As someone who not only loved Siracusa (modern name for Syracuse) when I visited Sicily a couple of years ago and also as the author of a forthcoming book set in ancient Syracuse, I have long searched for more information about this wonderful and underrated city. This book is what I had been searching for. I can recommend it not only to those who plan to visit Sicily but also to anyone interested in the history of the Mediterraneans civilizations. Well written and carefully researched.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. THE best book on Syracuse By a reader I am a published author and realize how much work Mr. Dummett must have put into this book. For the last three years, I have done extensive research for a novel that included both the historical and modern Syracuse. I have full access to the libraries at UC Berkeley and Stanford University, as well as online sources, and can say that I have not found a book about Syracuse, in English, nearly as good as this one. I also made a research trip to Syracuse. I wish I had had this book both for background research and for my trip. But even late in the game, I read it with pleasure. Highly recommended.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Guide By William T. Spont Syracuse is a fabulous city; it is one of those places that alter one's vision forever. You might have simplistic notions of architectural purity, say, and when you pass through the baroque facade of the Duomo expecting a pastiche, a Greek temple overwhelmed by the accretions of millennia, you yourself are overwhelmed- by this profound simplicity and beauty. It is also driven home to you how history plays more than a subliminal role in architectural appreciation. You think of the Arabs slaughtering the Syracusans who took refuge in the Duomo, and realize that when this happened, in the ninth century, the building was almost 1,400 years old. The event thus seems relatively recent; indeed the sense of immediacy is almost frightening. The whole island of Ortygia breathes this spirit of a past that still exists. I have read many books about Syracuse, and I enjoyed this one; it is certainly more than a traveler's guide. I would like to add to Mr. Dummett's suggested reading list, however. He mentions Mary Renault's The Mask of Apollo, but not Peter Vansittart's A Choice of Murder or Tom Holt's The Walled Orchard, both of which are extremely well-written. The only negative thing I have to say is that his use of commas is a bit disconcerting, in that it sometimes misplaces modifiers so that I had to reread sentences. I know that Americans and Brits tend to use commas differently, but here's a case where I don't think our difference is just a matter of style; I really think that American usage makes for a smoother read.

About the Author Barbara Ireland, a writer and editor based in western New York State, is a former deputy travel editor and deputy Op-Ed page editor at The New York Times. While on the Times staff, she commissioned and edited many "36 Hours" columns and wrote a few herself. She is a graduate of Cornell University and was a John S. Knight journalism fellow at Stanford University.

By Victoria I picked the NYT 36 Hours World book set as a present for a friend and must say that it is beautiful in person. I knew Taschen always makes beautiful coffee table books and this collection is no different! This book set has beautiful linen hardcovers with graphic maps for the endsheets and each city has both restaurant and “must see” attraction recommendations. Each city even includes a map of the city to show where the recommended attractions and restaurants are located. This book set has definitely made me think twice about giving it away as a present!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A must-have for any traveller By Jessica I read a million books and blog posts before any trip, but I depend on my copy of 36 Hours for all my plans. As a traveler at heart, I open my book and immediately feel the urge to go somewhere new. The descriptions and advice from these books is priceless – it not only helps you get to know a city, but also allows you to choose what is really important when you only have a limited amount of time in each place. Plus they look great on any bookshelf!

I didn't have the heart to throw away the nice carrying case that it came in. A must for anyone looking for a physical or mental vacation.

I feel her arrogance is coming through on this one, however. She has some very good observation but throughout overestimates her own impact and popularity. She actually seems quite inauthentic, every time she starts to really look at herself honestly she veers off into marketing lingo about branding. No one is telling her to work 18 hour days, her (male) coworkers certainly don't seem to be doing that. She's made tough choice in her life and it's kind of obvious that her family life, friendships and community life would suffer because of it.

By Thomas Garrity The author is a self egrandizing naval gazer who thinks choosing to have a husband, children and a job somehow makes her "special" enough to write a book that never really ties anything together beyond some bizarre concept of "branding."If you want to value something forgo handing off your earnings to buy into this silliness.

No substance By riat This book is terrible, full of jargon and feel good lingo to make working moms justify never being around for their kids milestones. All of the sudden everyone is a "brand" . ..I'm a business owner mom and I want to tell young moms that you can not have it all- you have to find the happy medium to balance out your time away from the kids (mentally away when your on your phone and computer and physically).Stuff and material things give fleeting joy to kids, what they really want is our time, attention, and love...and we need to find a way to give them that while fulfilling our own goals ...it's just tough. Not to mention the husband that you must nurture as well to maintain a strong marriage. This book doesn't provide any deep insight to those issues and seems like an ad for her seminars more than anything.
