This book came at the right time. It has all the pro's and cons of living a minimalistic adventurous life style with less financial worries and helped us with choosing the right vehicle for our personal purposes. It also covers safety, preparation, location and earning an income whilst on the road, all the things to consider when deciding to live in a motorhome.

This book is full of guidelines that will prepare you for a comfortable boondocking.The author advices on what items to keep, how to clean the RV, how to conserve water and electricity and much more in great details.It also has a chapter entirely dedicated to taking care of pets in a RV. Seeing the way the author has written this book, you can understand that it comes from an experienced person.This book is a book of hacks or tips. It's written in points. If I had the option , I would just print the list and hang it on my wall. Wonderful book.

By Mystery Lover I've been thinking about writing a cookbook, and so I grabbed this book with great delight, hoping it would provide me with the guidance I know I need. Sadly, all it did was tell me that since I didn't go to culinary school, I don't have a snowball's chance of succeeding in this. Yes, according to Yorio you must have gone to culinary school AND have a large number of friends in the field who can provide you with recommendations, etc. I stopped reading after a chapter or two. Recommended for the culinary school graduate only.

Advice on how to amass a social media following By Becky (in NOLA) I love reading cookbooks, so I was curious what it took to be an author of a cookbook. Apparently one has to go to culinary school, have social media followers, be a great photographer. Well, none of that is terribly wrong, except the culinary school. Rhee Drummond, became a food network star and cookbook author because of her blog, Pioneer woman. Nadia G did her own video show, youtube has tons of people hosting little cooking segments. I don't believe Rachel Ray, perhaps one of the most prolific cookbook authors, went to culinary school. In fact, she calls herself a cook, not a chef.I'm not dismissing culinary school, or having an education, just that I think it may be less important that a following. The book does give advice on how to amass a following.Advice comes from cookbook authors, interviews and sound bites. This doesn't seem to offer a gritty down to earth way to actually get a cookbook written. It does talk about how to get a following, but I feel if this were a cookbook, it would be a pretty coffee table book, but not sure how much I would use it to actually cook.

It is aimed at those who would like to publish one, but it also delves into past cookbooks and gives some illustrations of them.It contains information on; what is a successful cookbook, how to build your own and find a professional to help you, writing, testing, the art, using the social media and old school methods like book tours, e-books and self-publishing.One of the fascinating sections, especially for those who are not necessarily publishing are the excerpts from different authors. They tell about their experiences, particularly about their first book which will give you hints on what makes a successful book - mainly telling stories about your recipes. Inserts are included along the way that give you more information like, a history of collecting recipes, and bestsellers.This is a book for those who are fascinated by books and how they are made, lovers of cookbooks and of course those who wish to publish their own. One would wish that many of the organizations that publish cookbooks by their members would take advantage of the advice offered in these pages.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A good biography that is also an historical document By Daniel Putman Some interesting dates surround this book which was first published in 1899. Hermann Helmholtz died five years before the book was first published. The author knew him personally and was also familiar with William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, who died eight years after the book came out. In at least a dozen places in the book the author, John McKendrick, talks with confidence about the "ether" and the work of Helmholtz, Thomson and others who use the ether as a fundamental assumption in their mathematical formulations. McKendrick, like many others, did not see the significance of the Michelson-Morley experiment in 1887. So much solid work had been done with the ether assumption that no other alternative made sense at that point. Yet, six years after the book was published, Einstein showed conclusively that the "ether" did not exist. Similarly, using the work of Thomas Young, Helmholtz and others, McKendrick also states categorically that the particle theory of light is absolutely disproven.Why would a biography of Hermann Helmholtz published in 1899 with dated scientific references in it be worth reading? Two reasons. One is that the more recent biography of Helmholtz by Michel Meulders, translated by Laurence Garey, is virtually unreadable. I worked my way through about 60% of the book but finally had to give up. Meandering, disorganized - the one star review of that book says it all. This book was the only alternative and it is much better written. The book has a tendency toward 19th century wordiness at times but that does not hurt its organizational style or readability. McKendrick, who was a well-established Scottish physiologist in the last half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century, divides the book by the universities where Helmholtz worked. After an introductory chapter on his early life and a good chapter on the state of science in Germany in the 19th century, chapters are "Helmholtz in Berlin," "Helmholtz in Konigsberg," "Helmholtz in Bonn," etc. This is a useful way of following the flow of Helmholtz's life work. McKendrick does a fine job, far better than many contemporary biographers, of clearly describing the life and work of one of the major figures in modern physics and physiology. Many 19th century biographies are hagiographies of the subject. That is not the case here though the author obviously admires Helmholtz. One of the most refreshing things in this book is the way that the author puts the discoveries of Helmholtz into full context, regardless of the nationalities involved. For example, he cites the work done by others on the conservation of energy and, like Helmholtz himself, gives credit where credit is due for that major formulation. The same is true for Helmholtz's work on vision and his invention of the ophthalmoscope, a device we experience almost every time we go the "eye doctor" and an instrument that has saved millions of people unnecessary suffering. The only chapter I had trouble following was the one that dealt with Helmholtz's work in audiology but anyone who knows more physiology that I do would have no problem. This is a valuable book for anyone tracing the work in physics and physiology that has led to the modern world.The second reason this book is interesting is because, being written when it was, the book itself is a reading in history. McKendrick is such an effective writer that the reader gets a strong sense of what science looked like in 1899. The references to concepts no longer accurate like the ether, instead of making the book irrelevant, for me made it like reading a letter from 1899 in which the world is described as known then, errors and all. The book shows what differences and similarities we have in science today and what a leader in his field like McKendrick thought about the future of science and its impact on human life. We know what came afterward and the contrast is interesting in itself; the relatively few references to out-of-date concepts do not detract from the biography itself.Helmholtz was a truly remarkable figure who tied together physiology and physics. He was a mathematical genius who originally wanted to be a physicist but his father's influence and practical issues led him to physiology. I doubt anyone else could have combined the two as well as Helmholtz did. Like Kelvin, he had no desire to do pure math but insisted on using math in practical areas where experiments could be done and explanations could be given to students. He was a gifted teacher who always kept his own achievements in perspective. (He was incredibly proud of his most gifted student, Heinrich Hertz.) Teaching to Helmholtz was essential to keep his mind active and up-to-date on the latest developments in science. Mixed in with his ground-breaking discoveries are some statements that foresee later physics. For example, he talks about what geometry would be if you lived on a two-dimensional surface, what it would be on a sphere, what it would be on an egg-shaped space, and what it might be on an infinitely curved space. Euclid becomes irrelevant. He also talked about higher dimensions which humans, like those living on a two-dimensional world trying to picture three dimensions, could not visualize. A fascinating man who also by all indications was a fine human being.So some provisos are definitely in order for recommending this book. At least some knowledge of basic physics (not beyond Physics 101) is useful as is some knowledge of physiology. Expect the language in the book to be a bit more Victorian than we are used to and there is always the "ether." This is a reprint by Forgotten Books. 99% is fine but one page was blurred out and the image of Helmholtz at the beginning did not copy at all. But, given those provisos, this is a worthwhile reprint of a classic and useful both as a solid biography of a ground-breaking genius and as a bit of history in itself.

I realize that it's a set up for more sequels, but it leave too many situations hanging & unanswered! I won't go into detail so I don't ruin it for those who have not read it yet but it's a little disappointing

For the others of you who have read stories, and seen movies about Stillman, if you haven't read this one, get to it!!! One to read twice or three times!

We get left hanging on a few things at the end, so I hope the next installment is forthcoming. Mean Pete never disappoints.

Excerpt from Geology of TennesseeThis Report, and the Map which accompanies it, embody the principal results of the geological surveys and researches made by myself in Tennessee, at intervals during the last twenty years. For six years of this period I acted under the authority of the State. For the remainder of the time, the surveys made, were on my personal account, and their results, in so far as they are here embraced, are a gratuitous contribution to the Geology of Tennessee.What is presented in this volume is, with its merits and defects, essentially my own. Ballard There is not a lot of modern references on the general geology of Tennessee, so this book is a handy reference on geology work done from the 1800's. This is a scan of the original publication and, as such, it is missing the map that went with the original publication.

August 18-20, 1955: Three terrifying days and nights still remembered with awe in the Delaware River valley. Record-breaking rainfall from hurricanes Connie and Diane abruptly ended a withering drought, but the relief was short-lived. It was soon overshadowed by terror and destruction that tore away bridges and ripped houses from their foundations. From the river's headwaters in the Catskills and through the Poconos, excessive runoff surged down steep slopes and through valleys on both sides of the river. Tributaries swelled unbelievably, some rising thirty feet in fifteen minutes. Eventually, they all poured into the Delaware, transforming the usually placid waters into a raging, uncontrollable beast. Mountain resorts were inundated, leaving cars upended in swimming pools. Entire summer camps were washed away. More than 400 children were evacuated by helicopter from island camps in a tense, unprecedented operation. About the Author Mary A. Shafer is a native Pennsylvanian, born in the Amish country of Lancaster. She spent every childhood summer with relatives in Huntingdon and Mifflin counties, and grew to know and love Pennsylvania and its history. Her family moved to Wisconsin when she was very young, and she lived there for thirty years before returning to the Keystone State in 1997. Mary now resides in Bucks County. An honor student at the Uni- versity of Wisconsin campuses at Stout and Milwaukee, she earned her Associate of Applied Science degree in Graphic Design and Communication at Milwaukee Area Technical College and went on to teach there. She now teaches courses in writing, publishing, marketing and drawing in several community school programs in Bucks County. Mary makes her living at The Word Forge, a full-service freelance writing and boutique marketing firm. She is a contributor to several local newspapers, and to local and national magazines. She also consults with independent book publishers as The Indie Navigator (IndieNavigator.com). She receives help with general clerical duties from Idgie, the inbox kitty. Her first book, Wisconsin, The Way We Were: 1845-1945, was published by Heartland Press in 1993. 1995 saw the release of Ms. Shafer’s second book, Rural America: A Pictorial Folk Memory, by Willow Creek Press. It won a Best Book award from the Mid-America Publishers Association. She edited and contributed to Almost Perfect: Disabled Pets and the People Who Love Them, an anthology published in 2008 by Enspirio House. Mary’s work has appeared in numerous trade, consumer and institutional magazines and newspapers. Mary blogs occasionally about writing, her work, and related topics on her author website at MaryShafer.com, and about severe weather, storm chasing and related issues on her Storm Whisperer blog at StormDiaries.com/blog. Mary is a National Weather Service certified SkyWarn weather spotter, a self-described “weather weenie,” a sometime storm chaser, and the founder of the Amateur Weather Enthusiasts of America (AWE-USA). For thirteen years, she served as volunteer weather and communications coordinator for the Nockamixon Township Emergency Management Agency, and was commended for her community service during a week-long activation during Superstorm Sandy. She sits on the flood advisory board for The Delaware River Basin Commission. Mary is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, PennWriters, and the Twin Rivers Writers Group.

I was on the edge of my seat though most of it. Much of the dialogue is direct quotes from those who survived the flood, some is conjecture of what might have reasonably said. The author's description of the Paunacussing Creek roaring towards Lumberville is so vivid you can almost hear it. This is a great book for anyone "weather junkie" or history buff. Loved it!

It is difficult to understand how a weather event can be so devastating but the auther makes the process of the flood come alive . (Thank God it was on dry land that I was reading this!!)

A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. It seems to be the entire work as I remember from University, but I found the lack of Table of Contents to make this a hard read.I like to jump around from similar flower and plant species to other species that I assume were similar in form and function. This book seemed to lack an easy way for me to do that. Other readers might find this not a problem, but it held me back slightly.

It has the most hilarious jokes of all time about mother and sons and daughters, and even husbands. It's very entertaining and anyone can use it if they work as a comedian. I haven't moved on yet to those jokes I read from this book. Well all I can say is wow. This book is fantastically awesome. As it provides and overloaded with yo mama jokes. I caught my self laughing out loud reading this book. I found if very interesting every time I turn it on to the next page. But I just gave it a 4 star because this book is too short.so I am unsatisfied but still a great book to read. This book is perfect to read when you are stress or tired from work. I'm sure all of your stress will relieve when you read this book.

I don't think I've read a single joke here that announced conversant. My wife and I have been laughing so hard that we woke the kids up. Although I do love a good YO MAMA joke, the assortment comprises a lot of other funny bonus jokes too. I am going to order a few as small Christmas gifts for friends who need a good laugh. I'm happy to give this rating.
