By Daniel Williams Update April 2016.Having spent the last few months with the book, my opinion has soured. Read the negative reviews and you'll get a feel for the product. What interests me - now having spent time actually reading and using the material on a daily basis - is how, exactly the editorial staff permitted such a poor product to see the retail light of day.Perhaps the book escaped. Or was tossed out. Maybe they did it to us on purpose.Regardless, no CCIE knowledge can overcome the odious editing mistakes, omissions and sloppiness.Final verdict: Save your money and your frustration. This is Cisco. There'll be plenty of opportunity to spend your money and feed your frustration down the road. TAC, anyone?I just purchased the book for my Cisco switch class and have a few brief comments so far:1) Be sure to download the errata if you have the May 2015, First Printing version.[...]There are a number of errors including every single Chapter 2 review answer. The errata provides the correct information.2) A general criticism. Cisco, like a lot of text book manufacturers, keeps edging towards cheaper quality. I have a number of Cisco books and the paper and print quality is below-average. Paper quality is so-so and the diagrams are hard to read in some instances because the gray shades all blend together.Because it is written by a knowledgeable pair of CCIE's, I expect the content to be good. I'll update my review again.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Poorly Written By Leonard Miller This is one of the most poorly written books I have ever seen. Even trying to decipher the errata is cumbersome. The answer key to the Ch2 review questions was completely wrong, and I do mean completely. I had to look at the errata to check my answers.Use it as a supplement, but definitely not as a definitive guide and still be sure to have other sources.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not a bad book when correct By GB1 Not a bad book when correct. Problem is this book fraught with errors. The published errata is almost as long as the book itself.Hard to rely on this book to pass a test when so much is just wrong. As previously mentioned Chapter 2 review question answers don't even refer to the questions in chapter 2.

'Pathways' traces the history of Britain's historic paths, from ancient processional routes and Roman roads, through smugglers' trails and right up to the pedestrian zones in today's towns and cities. It's a fascinating tale which intersects with every aspect of Britain's development through the centuries and tells us so much about our forebears and their lives. In twenty chapters the book explores paths used for commerce and trade, such as drovers' roads and packhorse routes; dykes, ditches and roads used for the exercise of military power; religious routes from prehistoric avenues to medieval pilgrimages; and pathways built specifically for leisure, whether stalking tracks in Scotland, in municipal parks or on seaside promenades. The book was originally published in hardback by Guardian Books in 2011 and sold out two editions. This version includes all the chapters and information in the original book, just without the pictures. The twenty walks described in the book are available for free download from the Walkingworld.com website. The Walkingworld website features over 6500 walks in Britain and beyond, all with step-by-step guides and Ordnance Survey maps.

The powerful bond between humans and dogs is one that's uniquely cherished. Loyal, obedient, and affectionate, they are truly "man's best friend." But do dogs love us the way we love them? Emory University neuroscientist Gregory Berns had spent decades using MRI imaging technology to study how the human brain works, but a different question still nagged at him: What is my dog thinking?

After his family adopted Callie, a shy, skinny terrier mix, Berns decided that there was only one way to answer that question - use an MRI machine to scan the dog's brain. His colleagues dismissed the idea. Everyone knew that dogs needed to be restrained or sedated for MRI scans. But if the military could train dogs to operate calmly in some of the most challenging environments, surely there must be a way to train dogs to sit in an MRI scanner.

With this radical conviction, Berns and his dog would embark on a remarkable journey and be the first to glimpse the inner workings of the canine brain. Painstakingly, the two worked together to overcome the many technical, legal, and behavioral hurdles. Berns's research offers surprising results on how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom.

How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love, respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional intelligence.

Gregory Berns got the crazy idea of training his dog to lie still in an MRI machine in the hope it would provide some insight into dogs' thinking. What he found brings scientific proof to something every dog person knows --- that dogs read us, anticipate our behavior, and act on that knowledge. Dogs, in short, have theory of mind. Berns rightly argues that this scientific evidence must change the way we think of and treat dogs. His book is filled with fairly complex scientific concepts but it is written beautifully and clearly. It is very easy to understand and, like a good adventure novel, pulls readers along with foreshadowing and suspense. I disagree with the reviewer who said the book is written "backwards." I really wanted to know how the idea developed, how the training was done, all the background stuff in the early chapters.I love that Berns is not an especially savvy dog person, at least at the beginning of the Dog Project, as he calls it. That makes it all the more sweet when he recognizes how hard dogs try to communicate with and understand humans. I have enormous respect for Berns and his team's commitment to ensuring that the dogs were willing, even eager, participants in every step. I especially enjoyed the long discussion of the ethical issues he faced in setting up the research and the insistence of all the human researchers that the dogs would always be free to opt out, at any time. This book is a testament to what amazing things can be accomplished when humans acknowledge their dogs' abilities, treat them as partners (rather than as property or as slaves) and engage with them in a respectful, positive manner. This should be required reading for ALL dog lovers. It will be required reading for all of my students at Bergin U, the only place to study the dog-human relationship at the college level.

Stone First of all, this book is written backwards and clearly comes directly from the mind of a scientist rather than from the heart of a dog lover. An editor's touch in sequencing would have made this book perfect.Let me explain what I mean by that. The whole first part of the book is an explanation of means and methods. It is a dry read and yet it's information you would want to know, if the findings section of the book left you curious for more.If you are like me you will skim the first chapters and dig into the later chapters. Then later, once you have finished the actually informative parts of the book, you will go back and read the clinical minutia that led up to it. You will do that because you want to judge the conclusions on the merit of how they were gained. So to sum up that critique, everything that I needed to be here was here. It's only flaw is the presentation. The back of the book should have BEEN the book and the front of the book should have been appendixes, footnotes and back matter explanation. How many stars should be docked for that? None in my view. I loved this book and am free enough of a thinker to sequence the material for myself. The bottom line is that every dog lover should read this to affirm the love and respect that they hold for this noble beast...even if you read it out of order.

Science and Understanding Emotion By Susannah St Clair Foxy Loxy This book is really in depth scientifically speaking but also delves into the heart and real understanding between man and dogs. It is concise and well written but it is NOT a story tale, all fluffy and huggy but real science . A story about how a man wanted to actually know if there was a way to see brain responses for what a dog feels for the humans they live and associate with. It had never been done before , in fact the idea of a dog staying in a working MRI was not thought possible, at least while he was awake. . Think of the huge sounds an MRI makes, then add a dogs incredible hearing plus the fact that in order to do a brain scan, the dog would have to hold its head PERFECTLY still for many seconds. Thats perfectly. Not even a quiver. Let alone the cost of using an MRI for the project and just think of the nay-sayers. "Why" they would ask. Well Dr. Gregory Berns thought that humans and dogs were so "tight" and had been so for eons, learning this would help both species. This is that story. I found it at times almost too much in depth but it was so well laid out and often translated in a student commonality that I would finally "get it". Just the fact that there was so much time involved JUST to be able to get the dogs (there were two) to enter and lay quietly in a MRI was a challenge for the ages! The fact that Dr. Berns not only accomplished this and a lot more, shows the depth of his belief that it was an important thing to understand. There were tantalizing glimpses into possibilities of understanding even more of a dogs thought process. Not only did Gregory Burns learn some really wild science, he learned also how canine/human bonding happened and his understanding of that relationship would enrich his life not only with dogs, but his surroundings. This is a fascinating book and I think it has and will open a lot of minds to the understanding that animals are not possessions or property but thinking, feeling , emotional beings and need to be held on a level with the two legged inhabitants on this earth. We all contribute and are all part of this giant cosmos and hopefully this book will help us understand why this is so.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great mystery for young readers By Caryn Hamster Holmes and his lightning bug sidekick, Dr. Watt, love to solve mysteries. When a friend reports that someone has been knocking on his door and then disappearing before he can answer, the detective buddies know they have their next case. The mystery aspect keeps readers involved and guessing, whether or not they've heard of the original Sherlock Holmes, and many parents and teachers will appreciate the fact that Hamster Holmes sucks on a water bottle instead of a pipe. The fact that Dr. Watt communicates in Morse code -- complete with a key in the book -- adds a fun, optional code-breaking element to the story. A stronger resolution probably would have bumped this one up from 'advisable' to 'essential.'

I'm not a lawyer, but the guide is compelling because the author lays out how he was able to make such a drastic pivot even though he spent all that money in student loans and studying to become a lawyer.I've been playing around with Javascript for front end dev, but I'm going to check out ruby on rails next based on what the author mentions in the book. The book does a good job with an overview of what types of developers are most in demand. The interviews are pretty inspiring too - it shows that anyone who have never coded before can just get good enough for employment with enough grit and hard work.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Saved Me From a Massive Amount of Student Loans! By Oswaldo Zuniga This book is awesome! Coding is something I never considered, but I've decided to defer my decision to go to law school while I keep exploring my options, particularly in tech start ups. The book covers the reason why someone should pursue software instead of law, and lays out what's needed in a year to make a transition. Recommended! The book also references other resources to learn about actual coding and what it entails, so it's a good place to learn about the career paths of software if you don't know where to start.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Easy to understand and inspiring By Kenjamito The book is well written and helps clear the mystique of the world of software development. The book breaks down the world of software development in a way that is easily digestible and leaves the reader with a concrete action plan to self-teach your way into an entry-level software developer within the period of one year. Although the book is titled "Quit Law and Code," it could have been named "Quit Your Job and Code" as the bulk of the direction given in the book is applicable to non-lawyers as well.

Kindle Edition has no Quality Control, Without Page Numbers and Contents difficult to Navigate By Mark Henderson Kindle Edition does not include fold-out map at end, nor do free downloads from Google Play or Archive.org (though these editions show map image folded between Bibliography (page 90) and index (page 91). Also on skimming several words are mis-read electronically (so "Shrines" becomes "Shrinks"). This is my first Kindle order so I will be reluctant to try it again.

Great Read By Andy Gundersen Having grown up in the Southwest, I did a lot of hiking and backpacking in the Gila national Forest and the white Mountains of Arizona. This book provides more than just a glimpse into what this area must have been like 100 years ago. Reading the field notes of Adolph Bandelier was a real joy.

Excerpt from The Principles of Anatomy as Seen in the HandThis Volume owes its inception to several circumstances. First, it is the result of attempting to teach medical students such principles of anatomy as may be expected to interest them in their school work and assist them in their after-life as practitioners of medicine. But more immediately its origin is due to the necessity of choosing some circumscribed study in applied anatomy as a subject for a series of lectures. These lectures were given as a part of the Course of Instruction to officers of the R.A.M.C. at the Special Military Surgical Hospital, Shepherd's Bush. The product of these circumstances is not designed, as were the lectures, for qualified medical men, for it is hoped that the student of anatomy, no matter if he be definitely following a career of medicine or not, may obtain some help from its pages.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If you are early in your training (residency) it will be a bit thick and you will not appreciate it. Try something like "essentials of hand surgery" by Seiler instead.

60 Essential Items You Absolutely MUST Have To Stay Alive In A Time Of Crisis

Disaster can strike in a variety of different ways, and though it is always unexpected and a surprise when we confront it, how well we are able to endure it depends on a number of key factors, including how well we’ve prepared in advance for conceivable emergencies. Part of this preparation involves designing an emergency and survival kit – this can be as small as a zip-up First Aid kit, or as complex and large as a pantry stocked with essential survival gear like flashlights, dried food, and water. This book is designed to give both novice and professional survivalists alike a basic outline of the most essential gear in terms of supplementing the three basic aspects: food, water, and shelter. However, it also included a list of items to help maintain moral and hygiene, as well. Download your copy of ”The SHTF Stockpile” by scrolling up and clicking "Buy Now With 1-Click" button.

Being the paranoid person I am, I decided to buy this book. I've been greatly impacted by it learning things like making my own med-kit. And most importantly it includes tips on how to maintain your moral and hygiene. Recommended by all the survivalists out there.

Interesting book By Amazon Customer This book is pretty awesome when planning on going somewhere because it gives you a list of items that you must have with you when travelling or going camping. Some of them are quite obvious such as a flashlight but there are some neat ones that most people would forget. I would add this book to my list of essential items too.Worth the read if you're planning on travelling.

Excerpt from Practical Geometry: For Builders and ArchitectsThe Directly-Useful Technical Series requires a few words by way of introduction. Technical books of the past have arranged themselves largely under two sections: the Theoretical and the Practical. Theoretical books have been written more for the training of college students than for the supply of information to men in practice, and have been greatly filled with descriptions of an academic character. Practical books have often sought the other extreme, omitting the scientific basis upon which all good practice is built, whether discernible or not. The present series is intended to occupy a midway position. The information, the problems, and the exercises are to be of a directly-useful character, but must at the same time be wedded to that proper amount of scientific explanation which alone will satisfy the inquiring mind. We shall thus appeal to all technical people throughout the land, either students or those in actual practice.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Nield RxJava is a pretty new library and reactive programming altogether is only starting to get noticed. Although challenging to learn, I have found reactive programming to solve many problems I have struggled with, especially when it comes to managing mutability and state. It might sound like a bit of a hyperbole, but it may very well be the future.Although the concepts of reactive programming were largely realized by the folks at Microsoft and implemented first into .NET, RxJava came about a few years ago when Netflix needed a better means to scale their services. They open-sourced the library on GitHub and it has started to get notice especially after Java 8 came out with lambdas. That being said, this is a pretty good book if you feel overwhelmed by the online documentation, manifestos, and tutorials out there (I think I have read most of them). However, I was a bit disappointed this book was geared largely towards Android development. As someone primarily interested in JavaFX and BI applications, I found 1/4 of the content Android-specific and irrelevant. But the other 3/4 is relevant to any Java developer. I would have authored the Android stuff in its own chapter, rather than scattering it throughout the book.Overall, this is a good book to get a grasp on reactive programming with RxJava and getting quick applicable knowledge of the many Observable operations. If you are interested in Java GUI development be sure to check out Tomas Mikula's excellent ReactFX library on GitHub as well.

It does a pretty good top level overview of the concepts and provides good examples. The Retrofit + Rx chapter was a plus and pretty useful. I feel ready for a more advanced book now. Forgive the typos, typed using a phone.

It's about a 2 hour read cover to cover, and if you found anything confusing while trying to learn RxJava from the online help docs, you will still be confused at the end of this book.

Also By TommyLee The fact that this is the first major, serious publication (other than a few dissertations and academic papers) on the Cherokee language and grammar since Durbin Feeling's "Cherokee-English Dictionary" was published over 40 years ago, is in itself HUGE and very welcome. Although it's based on the dissertation that Montgomery-Anderson wrote for his PhD, he has modified his syllabary transcription system for consonants and brought them in line with the system used in the Feeling's work-horse dictionary, making this work much more accessible to the general learner familiar with other Cherokee text books. The inclusion of 2 CDs with Durbin Feeing reading several of the examples through the book is a great addition. Also, I find the newer fonts used in this book easier to read as well. While this is not a book for the absolute beginner, it IS a must-have for anyone who is serious about studying the Cherokee language.

Like but need better product info posted for potential buyers By Connie Pugh I just got this today, it looks like it will be very helpful in learning and studying the Cherokee language. The only thing I I would say that needs to be told in description of this book/cd set is that cd won't play on standard CD player. I had to play mine on computer as there's over the number of tracks that standard players can handle. After I downloaded to computer I then put them in my music library on my air pad to access and listen to on head phones if I need to.

The book came on time. The grammar is soooo perfect. Thank you, thank you. Learning this language and exploring more of my Cherokee ancestry.

What I've always called Looping, Dean calls Cycling, but they're both basically the same process.I've tried multiple times to outline large complicated novels only to find I can't complete them. Same goes for short stories. The moment I plan too much, the playful part of my brain gets bored and wants to give up on the 'work.' It's nice to see a process explained that takes advantage of the playful part of the brain, channels that playfulness into useful sets of tools, and then gives you permission to write in a way that doesn't feel dreadful.Understand, this isn't a long book with some complicated process, but it's worth every penny for the freedom it gives.I tell myself to always trust the process. Knowing someone as prolific as Dean faces the same process challenges and has learned to embrace them as features and not see them as roadblocks really gives me the encouragement to keep doing what I'm doing; detailed outlines and 11 redrafts are out the door. Now I'm going to go have some fun and write a new story.

I've beaten myself up for years for not writing linearly. Many times, I've tried to force myself to write according to a plot outline or linearly, page one straight through to the end, and have gotten royally stuck. I'm a puzzle writer (stories come to me with the pieces out of order, and I then have to fit them together), and I guess I also "write into the dark," because this really resonated with me as I read it. It's so helpful to read a book that doesn't deem the way I write as weird or wrong, but embraces it as a natural, creative approach. This book also offers many useful tips for making the process work even better.

She seemed to think I might be opposed to the idea of Writing into the Dark, but I absolutely loved just about everything I read. What is "Writing into the Dark"? Simply put, it's writing without an outline and allowing your creative voice to write the story without your critical voice interfering. The twist here is to cycle through as you go: fixing what needs to be fixed as soon as you realize it, cutting what needs to be cut, etc. It's writing and rewriting all at once, so your critical voice never has the opportunity to ruin the story. And you never have to get bogged down in the rewriting process."Truth: When you are writing new words, you are never wasting your time.Never.Here comes a dirty word.Better cover your ears.Practice.There, I said it.Imagine walking up to some poor kid who is practicing a musical instrument and telling that kid he is wasting his time by practicing. He needs to only play concerts or nothing at all. Can’t imagine that?Yet when your critical voice tells you that you might be wasting your time, that’s exactly what you are saying to yourself. You are saying your writing must always be special, that it can’t be done to practice. Yeah, believing every word you write is always special will freeze you down into making writing work and then fairly quickly stop you completely. And again, that’s what the critical voice wants.Critical voice does not want you writing or taking any chances. Period. And writing into the dark? Wow, what a chance that would be. Far too much of a chance to take because your writing is “special.” Your writing must always be perfect and maybe you had better add in just one more rewrite to be sure. And maybe one more rewrite after that, because rewriting isn’t wasting time. That italics part, folks, was a sarcastic attempt to show you just how stupid those thoughts are.If you believe all of that was advice, you are beyond my help.Truth: The biggest waste of time in writing is rewriting. Period.""If I had to worry about going back for a second draft, I doubt I would be writing. I know the story, so it would be boring because I know the story."He speaks my language. As an adult with ADD, I completely relate to the idea of being bored with rewrites because I already know the story. I have far too many first drafts and unfinished rewrites. My goal for the last two years has been to complete rewrites to beta reading status. I'm closer this year, but still far from that goal. It didn't occur to me until I read this that the rewriting process itself could be part of the problem. And the reason my story changes with every rewrite...I'm excited about putting these ideas into practice with my own writing. My brain is buzzing, searching for ways to implement some of this into leading National Novel Writing Month this year (focusing on writing clean rather than quantity?), as well as in my local writers' group.I highly recommend this book to other writers, especially if you're finding yourself bored and overwhelmed with the rewrite process. We're all wired differently and what works for some won't work for others, but this is worth checking out.
