Excerpt from The Inequality of Human RacesThough many people have accused this age of irreligion, there is at least one point of similarity between modem Europe and that pre-Christian Era to which our present religion is due. Just as in ancient Palestine, there are living amongst us two kinds of prophets - the prophets of evil and disaster, and those of bliss, or as Europe likes to call it, of "progress." As in Palestine of old the public usually sides with the lighter, the optimistic, the more comfortable sort of people, with the prophets of bliss, while Time and Fate invariably decide in favour of the sterner and gloomier individuals, the prophets of evil. In the world to-day as well as in Palestine of old, the prophets of bliss are the false prophets; the prophets of evil, to-day as of yore, are the true ones. Such a true prophet was Count Arthur de Gobineau.Even his friends - those few friends whom he gained at the end of his life - still thought him unduly pessimistic. Old Wagner, who introduced him to the German public, thought of brightening his gloom by a little Christian faith, hope, and charity, in order to make the pill more palatable to that great public, which he, the great Stage-manager, knew so well. Other Germans - Chamberlain, Schemann, and the Gobineau school - poured a great deal of water into his wine, sweetened it with patriotic syrups, adulterated it with their own pleasant inventions, which were all too readily swallowed by a gullible and credulous generation. But stem old Gobineau knew the world better than his young and cheerful offspring. Controversial By Jeffrey Leach Frenchman Arthur De Gobineau was better known for his fictional novels, but he wrote this historical-philosophical-sociological work in the 1800's as a result of his lengthy travels throughout the world. Gobineau took his observations and attempted to come up with a theory that would describe the disparity he observed amongst the different human races of the world. The result was a multi-volume set entitled, "The Inequality of Human Races". This translation is of the first volume only, but it reveals the main thrust of De Gobineau's theory and gives the reader much information to mull over. I chose to read this book for a European history class, since this book influenced not only German political and social thought, but also reinforced European views towards colonization and internal class struggles.Gobineau begins his book by looking at popular reasons concerning the collapse of civilizations. Such ideas as bad government, fanaticism and luxury are addressed and dismissed by Gobineau. He believes these are only symptoms of a degeneration of civilizations. His argument ultimately comes down to race mixing as the cause of the decline of civilization. Gobineau argues that civilizations that mix with peoples that are incapable of civilization will destroy that society. In Gobineau's opinion, all problems can be found in "the blood", and these problems can be passed on. Gobineau writes that there are two elements in blood, a male trait, which is concerned with materialistic aspirations, and a female trait, which is concerned with intellectual pursuits. He sees Hindus as having this female trait, which accounts for their intellectual works in religion. Germans have the male trait, a materialistic drive to acquire land and possessions; to go forth and conquer. When these elements mix, the varying degrees can form or destroy civilizations. Gobineau also looks at such things as language, which he says can exhibit traits of civilization. Lesser people can destroy a language by the fusion of their language with the better one.Gobineau is also an elitist. He looks at French peasants and argues that the vast majority of them are completely uninterested in what constitutes civilization, and are capable of only following the lead of the civilized.Sound confusing? It is. This book will take multiple readings to tease out everything Gobineau is trying to say. My biggest problem with the book is Gobineau's efforts to reduce the ills of the world to such a troubling argument. Does Gobineau make a case for his subject? Well, yes, if you lived in the nineteenth century.An interesting book, and one that has had far reaching effects, even up to today. Whatever the reader thinks, Gobineau can't be dismissed as some irrelevant nutcase. His arguments are still being discussed today, which proves the importance of this topic. Good reading for the historian or sociologist.
43 of 52 people found the following review helpful. Direct and clear By Ubraminos A historical document. However its racist content makes it scandalous and it will probably make it unavailable. Is a Rolls-Royce better than a Ferrari? What kind of dog is the best? I dont know but one thing is sure, they are different. Count Gobineau made his choice with human races judging their value by their achievements, but this is not a racist tiresome speech, Gobineau is a good argumentator, and good writer that uses history to prove he is right. The book is a good one with only one problem, its subject. As dangerous books do not exist if you're not a dangerous reader, this essay can be recommended.

I just wanted to warn everyone NOT TO GET THIS EDITION! It is missing whole pages of the original, mixes in footnotes with the actual text, and overall looks like a scan anyone could do. I am angry I spent $15 on something of this poor quality. Yes, they warn you of the typos, but LEAVING OUT PAGES?

By suzanne m cormendy This book is great for learning: what permaculture is and why it's important, the permaculture values and mindset, that you truly can garden anywhere, some tips on setting a permaculture garden up outside, some companion planting combos, and the buzzwords needed to find more information on the topics discussed.I don't feel any more confident to start a permaculture garden however. A larger list of soil breaking plants would be helpful. Are carrots soil breaking plants? Are they conserved to have a long taproot? My suburban neighbors would die if I grew dandelions to break up my soil. I totally get that dandelions are a valuable plant, but the reality is that they're perceived as a noxious weed. I'd need a more subdivision friendly taproot plant. So I'll be researching that and a bunch of other topics this book introduced me to.

There is information on drying herbs is important, how to dry herbs (including the entire process), the various drying methods to use, how to store your herbs after you've dried them, and more. I found the chapter on common mistakes particularly useful. It talks about mistakes made with herbs (not just herb drying) and is insightful for a beginner like me. Overall a great read that I can recommend.

Every map is divided by the book crease By Linda H The medium/small size and light weight of this atlas make it portable and easy to carry with me for study. The maps are all two page spreads, so the center of each map disappears into the crease of the book, it's distracting and hard to get used to. This is becoming less an issue now that the pages are relaxing and are more able to lay flat, but it's not ideal. Most of the maps are regional maps, so you get a close-up, for example, of several US states, or a section of a country or several small countries. It's not very useful for being able to see where nations/states are in relation to each other, so I don't think it's the best for learning exactly where in the world places are located, but the regional maps are fairly detailed if that's what you need.

A slightly more interesting view of the world, but utterly useless for my purposes.

In ancient indigenous cultures this gamut of social behavior toward and about nature, was not separated as "religion", but a way of life, an integral part of culture. With the rise of Christian ethic, which separated nature from the human world, thinking about nature became increasingly esoteric and arcane. From the European Renaissance to the age of Romanticism, nature has always been the other side of civilization. Our pristine, inchoate link to nature became increasingly covert. That link resurfaces when we refresh ourselves in Nature, when we identify ourselves with natural entities, feel ourselves as part of nature. And that immediately connects us to nature, and we tend to feel a religious experience, about which Thoreau and Emerson wrote so eloquently. Nevertheless, owing to the inability of the civilized Western enlightened people to eschew modernity, Nature needs to get reconnected only through various ritualistic approaches - transcendental meditation, Zen, Yoga, vegetarianism, veganism, and sometimes harking back to Muir and with attempts to maintain a Secluded, Untrammeled Nature. Zerzan's primitivism is another approach (not mentioned in this book, which appeared earlier than Zerzan's writings). There are more varied and deeper nuances of "nature religion", and this book depicts them exquisitely. An essential read for environmentalists and eco-activists. Despite the complexity of its argument, this book is a wonderful read.

Taylor Dee Aspin shares not only her gigantic love for her dogs but also her life in this wonderful book of lessons titled "Dogspirations." As Dee masterfully points out, many times what we do for our dogs is actually what God is helping us learn to do for ourselves. Like the chapter on Doggie Park Day or Me Too. Photographs of the wonderful dogs are sprinkled througout the book along with scripture readings at the end of each short chapter. I enjoyed reading this book and getting to know Dee and her furry friends.

Dogs are such silent witnesses to God's glory and the short stories in this book are such a great reminder of how God blesses us through our dogs. The author helps you see your life through the eyes of these sweet, furry creatures who love unconditionally and bring us such joy. As you read through this book, you'll be touched by the spiritual connection between man and canine. This book was such a blessing to me!

I'm not sure which story is my favorite, but I can tell you I'm in love with Benji and Sammy. I love the way the author tied each doggy story to a relatable life lesson and/or experience. I can't wait to read the sequel.

The appearance of a date on a coin is something so obvious to the numismatic layman that it is taken for granted. It will no doubt then come as a shock to him to discover that the custom of placing the year of minting on coins is absent for most of coinage history. It is rather, a relatively modern phenomenon. In fact, it did not begin in earnest until the end of the Renaissance, a period which also defines the start of the era of what numismatists would call “modern” coinage. In The Early Dated Coins of Europe, 1234-1500, Robert A. Levinson presents for the first time, a comprehensive listing in chronological order, by region, state, and mint, of all the known types of gold, silver and copper dated coins struck in medieval Europe bearing an Anno Domini date of 1500 or earlier. These “early dated coins,” form one of the first links between medieval and modern coinage. Anno Domini dating of coins using Latin script did not begin until the mid-13th century, and did not become prevalent in Europe until three centuries later. Separating those few coins with dates from the many struck without them at a thousand mints and by hundreds of different coin-issuing authorities was a daunting task. This book vastly expands on the only volume remotely comparable, the long out of print work authored by Albert Frey in 1915. It has taken Robert A. Levinson, a Los Angeles attorney and an ardent collector, more than fifteen years to bring this book to fruition. With the cooperation of many of the world's foremost numismatists, coin dealers and museums in more than half a dozen countries, Levinson approaches the subject quite differently and much more thoroughly than Frey. He focuses on the eight distinct regions in which coins were issued: Germany, Southern Netherlands, Northern Netherlands, Hapsburg lands, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Italy, and France and organizes the known pre-1501 Anno Domini dated coins chronologically within each region. For the first time, there is for each of the nearly 1200 coins listed (twice as many as in the Frey work), the full legends, descriptions, ruler names, references, weights and rarity. There are nearly 1000 photographs and line drawings, and given the extreme rarity of the majority of the coins, this in itself represents an extraordinary undertaking. The book is in four parts: The first is a lengthy history of early dated coinage, including discussions of the types, metallurgy, classifications, etc. The second part is the 173 page catalog of coinage, divided into the eight regions. The third part is a listing, again by region, of all the states issuing early dated coinage, with a history of each state’s coinage and a cross-reference to all the coins listed in the catalog. The fourth part contains eight appendices with alphabetical listings, translations of legends, a photographic glossary of coin types, a listing of early dated coinage using Islamic script, and other useful information. These glossaries and appendices will be invaluable not only to collectors of ‘early dated coins,’ but also to anyone needing a quick reference to medieval coin-issuing cities, states and mints, identifying their basic designs, or reading their sometimes complicated legends. For decades the only similar work has been Frey's "Dated European Coinage Prior to 1501". Levinson's new book on the subject blows Frey completely out of the water and makes it obsolete. Correcting the errors and removing the duplicates in that work, Bob Levinson's 15 year effort in gathering information and writing expands the number of coins catalogued and described to over 1,000 distinct types and numerous more subtypes and variants. The difference in organization and the increase in scope are startling to anyone familiar with Frey's work or its occasionally revised editions. Levinson adds legend transcriptions, weight info, catalogue references, and an estimate of rarity to each type listed. Additional sections and appendices after the main catalogue are as follows: An overview describing the location and brief history of early dated issuing cities and realms, with maps of the areas drafted by myself specifically for the book, a listing of all early dated issuing states and mints, legend translations, the patron saints appearing on the coins, a photo glossary, a list of a listing of the errors in Frey, early anno domini coins from the Crusader States, plus an extensive bibliography. Included in the back is a small pamphlet giving a rough price guide for the coins, rough because some of these coins are off the market for years at a time and gauging their values is difficult at best. Perhaps most wonderful of all are the literally hundreds and hundreds of photos and line drawings of nearly all these fascinating coins, many probably never seen before, so that if nothing else you can admire some of the rarest coins in the world. Many are unique or are known from only a handful of examples that exist only in museums.If early dated coinage is an interest, there is no other way to put it than to say you MUST own this book. There will be no reason to keep Frey except as a curio.

About the Author Thomas Pakenham is the author of the critically acclaimed THE SCRAMBLE FOR AFRICA which won the W.H. Smith Award and the Alan Paton Award. He is also the author of THE BOER WAR, THE MOUNTAINS OF RASSELAS and THE YEAR OF LIBERTY. He lives in County Westmeath, Ireland and is chairman of the Irish Tree Society. He plants trees both for profit and ornament.

By Bill Gould Thomas Pakenham has presented us with a wonderfully photographed essay into the lives of living legends. This book is a superb blend of poetry, philosophy and photography of living giants of the Earth. From native trees of Britain to New World immigrants, he has captured the essence of trees as giants. Part dendrology and part philosophy, no home library should be without this magnificent work. Ancient trees are inspirational in nature and this book presents a photographic essay that will inspire all who read it. A must have for the library of any tree enthusiast!

Green People You'll Be Pleased To Meet By Terrie This quality book contains large photographs and interesting historical text concerning sixty eccentric, distinctive and unforgettably beautiful huge old trees. You might think that a book about trees would be dull. Some of us do take trees for granted but this book will not fail to impress you and cause you to re-examine the individual beauty that each tree exhibits. Imagine the ancient yew tree beneath whose branches legend says conspirators plotted the murder of Mary, Queen of Scots' 2nd husband,the Earl of Darnley. You have to crawl under its drooping gnarled branches like you are entering an igloo. The dome they create is 60 feet high and 400 feet in circumference. The photograph is taken from inside this arboreal dome and we are treated to the light peeking through the ancient branches. We feel we are in a magical place indeed. As one who is growing a baby Yew so small that I can easily step over her while watering the garden, this enormous old Yew inspires and amazes me. It is only one of SIXTY similar treasures of Nature this book shares. Take the tour!

I'd hoped for a book full of beautiful photographs of large old trees, and it is that, indeed. It is also a bit less than I'd hoped, being trees only of the United Kingdom, and I would dearly love to have this author give a similar treatment to the gentle giants inhabiting other parts of the world.It is also much more than I'd expected, being filled with enchanting stories of the 60 (groups of) trees Pakenham has chosen to introduce. Each tree (group) is beautifully photographed, often with people nearby so you can get a sense of their immensity, and the images are accompanied by a few pages of text filled with delightful anecdotes and histories.Making the book even more valuable for travellers is a gazetteer with a map of the UK showing each tree's location as well as information regarding its common name, scientific name, full measurements and accessibilty to the public. Unfortunately none of the sixty are located in Wales, but there are 8 in Ireland, 10 in Scotland and 42 in England, including 10 in the London area. The book is interspersed with olde line drawings, and the book concludes with a bibliography, credits for the illustrations and a good index.If you love trees or travel to Great Britain, you will want to meet this remarkable book. Highest recommendation.

Excerpt from The Causes Which Produce the Great Prevailing Winds and Ocean Currents, and Their Effects on ClimateThe explanations contained in this pamphlet proceed from many years' experience on the several oceans of the globe. Still, however large such unnoted experience may have been, I am well aware of the presumptuous position assumed while drawing from such a source to advance new explanations of natural causes which have been long studied and repeatedly expounded by learned writers. But it is well to consider that such writers have never yet been able to explain satisfactorily the causes which produce the great prevailing movements of the atmosphere and ocean. And for this reason dissatisfaction is frequently expressed at our imperfect insight into phenomena so varying and contradictory to the explanations they have given. Therefore after a long familiarity with the working of the great prevailing winds and ocean currents, I am led to draw different conclusions in regard to their tendency, and the manner in which they are produced, than has yet been published. I received the book as promptly as could be in that it was coming from over seas. Howver, they have another such book that is exactly like this one, just different cover and the author's name is similar but not exactly the same-that is confusing to the shopper. There should be some notification of that, otherwise one would think it is by two different authors and a different read!
