The authors lay the foundation out in such a simplified manner that even those who never dreamed of writing will be writing their book in 8 steps! They debunk the myths, show you how to market your book so you earn a return on your investment - the missing piece most books leave out. I am always in search of more knowledge to fine-tune my writing and book marketing efforts and this excellent book is one I will rely upon time and again.

The book is jammed packed with useful information that beginner writers to experienced writers can benefit from regardless of the genre. This book would have been extremely helpful when I wrote my first book 10 years ago, but I decided to buy it because I am writing a new book and I don't want to make the same mistakes. After reading this book, I am inspired and ready to finish my current one and start other book ideas soon after.

How did we make reliable predictions before Pascal and Fermat's discovery of the mathematics of probability in 1654? What methods in law, science, commerce, philosophy, and logic helped us to get at the truth in cases where certainty was not attainable? In The Science of Conjecture, James Franklin examines how judges, witch inquisitors, and juries evaluated evidence; how scientists weighed reasons for and against scientific theories; and how merchants counted shipwrecks to determine insurance rates.

The Science of Conjecture provides a history of rational methods of dealing with uncertainty and explores the coming to consciousness of the human understanding of risk.

The Science of Conjecture: Evidence and Probability before Pascal, by James Franklin

Review

A remarkable book. Mr. Franklin writes clearly and exhibits a wry wit. But he also ranges knowledgeably across many disciplines and over many centuries.

(Wall Street Journal)

The Science of Conjecture opens an old chest of human attempts to draw order from havoc and wipes clean the rust from some cast-off classical tools that can now be reused to help build a framework for the unpredictable future.

(Science)

Franklin's style is clear and fluent, with an occasional sly Gibbonian aside to make the reader chuckle.

(New Criterion)

An admirably accessible study written in a crisp prose. It presents the reader with anarching historical perspective throughout many a century of human action.

(Giora Hon Centaurus)

Franklin gives a magisterial account of matters as diverse as the Talmud, Justinian's Digest, torture, witch hunts, Tudor treason trials, ancient and medieval astronomy and physics, humanist historiography, scholastic philosophy, speculations in public debt, and 17th century mathematics. His treatment of medieval law is among the best I have ever read.

(International Journal of Evidence and Proof)

Franklin's book is magnificent... Think of [it] as a non-fiction equivalent of Tolstoy's War and Peace.

(Peter Tillers The Jurist)

The Science of Conjecture is a masterly work, beautifully written, and based on encyclopaedic research... It is simply a tour de force that is unlikely to be surpassed for many a year.

(Barry Miller The Thomist)

Statistics teachers who like to sprinkle a little history and philosophy into their classes will find much here to delight and challenge them... This is a serious and scholarly work that I expect often will inform my teaching.

(Richard J. Cleary Journal of the American Statistical Association)

[This book has given me] sheer enjoyment in its density of strange information, in the wit and clarity if its writing, and in the vigour of its argumentation. I recommend it unreservedly to all interested in its subject.

(Oliver Mayo Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics)

This is the intellectual book of the year, and it ought to become one of the great classics of intellectual history.

(Scott Campbell Interdisciplinary Science Reviews)

The strength of The Science of Conjecture lies in its panoramic exposition of developments across the centuries and across intellectual disciplines and human endeavors. It is, as one reviewer wrote, 'a magesterial account of matters as diverse as the Talmud, Justinian's Digest, torture, witch hunts, Tudor treason trials, ancient and medieval astronomy and physics, humanist histriography, scholastic philosophy, speculations in public debt, and 17th century mathematics.'

(D. H. Kaye Law and History Review)

A remarkable book. Mr. Franklin writes clearly and exhibits a wry wit. But he also ranges knowledgeably across many disciplines and over many centuries. There are several reasons to read this book, but perhaps the best reason is its contemporary relevance. The lessons he discusses have pertinence to an age like ours, which has witnessed a gradual waning of faith in the objectivity of the relation of uncertain evidence to conclusion.

(Wall Street Journal)

The Science of Conjecture is an extraordinary work, a clearly written history of the ideas of evidence and of uncertainty before Pascal. Franklin has mastered a vast literature over thousands of years, bringing it together in scholarly fashion, fully annotated.

(Stephen Stigler, University of Chicago, author of The History of Statistics: The Measurement of Uncertainty before 1900)

In The Science of Conjecture, James Franklin shows us how deeply and subtly jurists and philosophers from ancient Greece onwards have explored how we can deal rationally with real-life cases (law cases, for instance, or scientific experiments) where the link between cause and effect is not obvious.

(J.M. Coetzee The Australian)

Since many in the nominalist/empiricist/positivist tradition deny that we can know natures, this book has a place in teacher education as well as legal education for the challenges it poses the reader on how we know, and how well we know, through induction, perception and abstraction.

(Metascience)

By N N Taleb As a practitioner of probability, I've had to read many books on the subject. Most are linear combinations of other books and ideas rehashed without real understanding that the idea of probability harks back to the Greek pisteuo (credibility) [and pithanon that led to probabile in latin] and pervaded classical thought. Almost all of these writers made the mistake to think that the ancients were not into probability. And most books such as "Against the Gods" are not even wrong about the notion of probability: odds on coin flips are a mere footnote. Same with current experiments with psychology of probability. If the ancients were not into computable probabilities, it was not because of theology, but because they were not into highly standardized games. They dealt with complex decisions, not merely simplified and purified probability. And they were very sophisticated at it.The author is both a mathematician and a philosopher, not a philosopher who took a calculus class hence has a shallow idea of combinatorics and feels dominated by the subject, something that plagues the subject of the philosophy of probability. This book stands above, way above the rest: I've never seen a deeper exposition of the subject, as this text covers, in addition to the mathematical bases, the true philosophical origin of the notion of probability. Finally, Franklin covers matters related to ethics and contract law, such as the works of the medieval thinker Pierre de Jean Olivi, that very few people discuss today.

Studies from the domain of child development are transferred to the domain of organizational development. OD practitioners will find instruments and intervention strategies. We learn that emotional abuse and neglect in the workplace is very harmful to human relations in organizations. To restore a normal organizational life takes a lasting effort, consideration and energy. The change agents need strong negative capabilities to stay fit because they are faced with distrust and envious attacks.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful map, just doesn't ship well. By Brian Richardson This is a beautiful map. It's classy and I love the colors. It's a great size, it's up to date, I love it. The lamination is nice-- not really heavy, but protective-- just what I need. But. It doesn't ship well. I ordered one, it arrived in a map tube inside a box. The box had been squished in shipping and had pinched the map tube making creases all along the map. The bottom edge of the lamination was also damaged-- maybe the lamination is really just too thin to support itself inside the map tube? I returned the map and requested a replacement-- that was speedy and painless and easy. I received the replacement in good time, but with the same issue. I will buy this map again-- but not online. I'll look for it in a store where hopefully enough maps were shipped together and not squished.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. We love this map By A.J. We love this map. The colors are beautiful! The lamination seems to protect the map well. We did get a little dent that will be permanent but I manage to do that to all my pictures somehow! The shipping was quick and it was well protected in a sturdy tube. We had to lay it out for a while before it would hang flat.

Free and attentive news media are essential to the workings of a democratic nation. But how well does the news, in reality, actually serve the needs of citizens, and thereby democracy? How well do the major methods of sharing national political information work, and how well-informed do they leave voters? For years, News: The Politics of Illusion has been the leading textbook to address that question, and in this ninth edition W. Lance Bennett brings his analysis fully up to date, exploring recent developments in news media and showing how they have improved--or hampered--the wide sharing of political news and information.

News: The Politics of Illusion, Ninth Edition, by W. Lance Bennett

Review

“News: The Politics of Illusion is a smart, provocative introduction to media and American politics. Bennett argues that the American political information system – with news at its center - is broken, with serious consequences for democracy. Bennett lays out his case, and invites readers to make up their own minds.” – Paul Freedman, The University of Virginia

“This book is written smoothly in flowing prose, free from the jargon that obscures to much social science writing. Bennett is critical, but never carping, praising the news system for what he considers its many strengths and condemning it for what he perceives as its shortcomings.” - from Doris Graber’s Foreword

About the Author W. Lance Bennett is professor of political science and the Ruddick C. Lawrence Professor of Communication at the University of Washington.

The media's job is to make money for their parent companies. To that end the media needs to keep viewers watching their product. This, however, does not mean that better information will be produced by the media in order to keep people watching their product. Rather, it means they will do what they need to keep viewers regardless of whether this means that will produce better information for their viewers. For instance, they might provide more information about celebrities or entertainment. In this instance, they would be engaging in "infotainment," rather than informing the public. Bennett says all of this clearly and in a more engaging manner using many real life examples. Get it and see what the media does and why it fails us!!!

I'm glad it was or I'd never have considered reading it. I despise politics and was dreading taking this class and reading this book. I was pleasantly surprised by this author's honest and direct approach to explaining the complicated relationship between journalists and politics. I'm in my senior year of college, and this is perhaps the only one of my school books that I'll happily save to re-read again someday. This version was also cheaper than the one my university bookstore was selling; same edition but printed by a different publisher. Score.

What more can I add except that the packaging ensured that as a paperback no damage in shipping could occur.

The world-famous Chincoteague Ponies, stars of the silver screen and main attraction at the annual Pony Penning, are essential to the local economy and local identity. But they run free only on the neighboring island of Assateague under the watch of an ambivalent federal agency, and they bear little resemblance to their colonial forbears. What does the future hold for them? Bonnie U. Gruenberg has studied, photographed, and written about wild horses for more than 20 years. Distilled from her encyclopedic Wild Horse Dilemma (Quagga Press, 2015), each Hoofprints Guide offers detailed information about the history, environment, behavior, and prospects of one Atlantic Coast herd in a convenient form with bonus photographs. Praise for The Wild Horse Dilemma: "The best work ever written about East Coast wild horses (or wild horses period!)."--Karen McCalpin, Executive Director, Corolla Wild Horse Fund "This is is an in-depth read not to be missed by serious wild horse enthusiasts. While the collection of archival photos is a treat, Gruenberg's own photos are second to none." --Victoria Tollman, Executive Director, Equus Survival Trust

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. No better book on the subject! By T. Ferry There is no better book on this subject! The Chincoteague Wild Ponies are "America's Herd"; if any wild horse population can be said to take that title, they are. Made famous by the annual Chincoteague Pony Round-Up and Pony Swim event that thousands attend, plus the wonderful children's book "Misty of Chincoteague" by Marguerite Henry and the Hollywood movie of the same title. My guess, is that there are more people in the United States, Canada and abroad that know, or who have heard about these equines, than any other wild horses, or ponies in the world. What you are purchasing here in this book, is the most researched, most detailed, most engaging, most historic book, on the Chincoteague wild ponies that has ever been written!! Truly, the author knows the subject matter and has a great writing style to keep you engaged. I loved the book and couldn't put it down. In fact, the whole series of books, from the author about the wild horses in the Eastern United States are wonderful. A bonus in this book, are the stupendous photos taken personally by the author. They are wonderful, in that they show the wild equines, in their natural habitat, plus the events they made famous, are articulated in these super photos too. The definitive book about the Chincoteague wild ponies!

Wild Horse Lovers/Horse Lovers Unite By T.Fen If you love reading about wild horses but are limited on time these guides provide details about each of your favorite East-Coast herds. The hoofprints guides are fun-sized versions of Bonnie's book, "The Wild Horse Dilemma..." and detail information about each herd individually. I love best reading about the herds of Chincoteague and Assateague, but each herd across the Atlantic coast has a unique story. I learn something new after reading each book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Truth in advertising By Dan Snyder I'm familiar with the original 1905 work, so I knew this was a facsimile reprint, but there's nothing in the product display to warn the unwary that this book is more than 100 years old. The author is listed incorrectly. There were TWO authors: Pratt and Joseph Volney Lewis. Lewis, in fact, had already published much of the material under his own name a few years before.I'm giving this classic only two three stars because the re-publishers have left out all but one of the plates illustrating microscopic thin sections. They also left out the fold-out map of western North Carolina, showing the locations of all the sites described, that accompanied the original. However, if you're not near a library that has the original, and don't want to spend 100 dollars plus for a used copy, this is a good buy.

This panoramic book tells the story of how revolutionary ideas from the Enlightenment about freedom, equality, evolution, and democracy have reverberated through modern history and shaped the world as we know it today.

A testament to the enduring power of ideas, The Shape of the New offers unforgettable portraits of Adam Smith, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Charles Darwin, and Karl Marx--heirs of the Enlightenment who embodied its highest ideals about progress--and shows how their thoughts, over time and in the hands of their followers and opponents, transformed the very nature of our beliefs, institutions, economies, and politics. Yet these ideas also hold contradictions. They have been used in the service of brutal systems such as slavery and colonialism, been appropriated and twisted by monsters like Stalin and Hitler, and provoked reactions against the Enlightenment's legacy by Islamic Salafists and the Christian Religious Right.

The Shape of the New argues that it is impossible to understand the ideological and political conflicts of our own time without familiarizing ourselves with the history and internal tensions of these world-changing ideas. With passion and conviction, it exhorts us to recognize the central importance of these ideas as historical forces and pillars of the Western humanistic tradition. It makes the case that to read the works of the great thinkers is to gain invaluable insights into the ideas that have shaped how we think and what we believe.

Review "[Among other things,] The authors offer a clear exposition of the Islamic fundamentalist thinker Sayyid Qutb, which is particularly helpful in understanding the intellectual roots of al-Qaeda and ISIS...[This is] a solid, idea-rich examination of how formative 18th- and 19th-century ideas germinated into the belief systems that have governed the 20th and 21st centuries."  Publisher's Weekly"The prose is accessible...and the narrative is well-written, made more interesting by the authors' willingness to tangle with tough constituencies and mount tough arguments... A pleasure for students of modern history, especially useful for those seeking an introduction to the broad field of intellectual history. Barzun, Berlin, and Needham would likely argue at points, but this fits squarely in their tradition."  Kirkus Reviews"This is a gem of a book in that it has the audacity to paint in big strokes to portray a great intellectual history that puts our often competing, current belief systems into their 18th and 19th century contexts. From the Back Cover

"This is a wonderful book. Montgomery and Chirot combine double-barreled scholarship, lucid prose, and considerable wisdom to offer us a fascinating excursion into the history of ideas. For anyone who wants to understand today's emerging conflicts--and what it will take for Enlightenment liberalism again to prevail--The Shape of the New is essential reading."--Jeffrey Gedmin, Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University

"The Shape of the New is an ambitious book and a joy to read. The scholarship is brilliant. In contextualizing the great ideas of modern history, Montgomery and Chirot provide a holistic framework with which to understand the processes of social change and ideological conflict."--Paul Froese, coauthor of America's Four Gods: What We Say about God--and What That Says about Us

"This fantastic book offers an impressively learned and evenhanded treatment of the Enlightenment's key ideas and the reactions to them over the past two centuries. I guarantee that anyone who reads it will be a lot smarter, more cultured, and a far more intellectually interesting dinner companion."--Zoltan Barany, author of The Soldier and the Changing State: Building Democratic Armies in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas

"This important book demonstrates the power of Enlightenment ideas, how they have shaped the world we live in, and how they have created systems of both action and reaction through time. It should be widely read by students, educators, and others who think that there is no need to teach classical thinkers or that their era is over."--Karen Barkey, author of Empire of Difference: The Ottomans in Comparative Perspective

Babu 7/31/15: I am only half way through this book and am hastening to write a tentative review because of the fact that there are no reviews on it yet.I am giving it a tentative five stars and shall update my review after completing my reading. This is a wonderful book. Written in lucid, easily-readable and cliche-free prose it has the ease of reading a novel and yet handles very important material. I am not technically adept to understand economics, biology and politics at the high end (although educated in science) and consider myself fairly well read, overall. The book handles somewhat disparate topics although in the end everything is related, as the authors tend to show. The real challenge for the authors was to present highly technical material for the general public in mostly non technical language, and yet not lose authority, congruence and relevance; they have done it with great success. At no time did I feel bored and am reading the book as I would a suspense novel. To me the subject(s) dealt with is like a thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle. I have put most of it together (in my mind, unconsciously) but am missing some crucial pieces, mostly the ones that give the image its real meaning and connectedness. If the ideas of Smith, Marx and Darwin are important (obviously so) and one understands the general teachings of these remarkable men, what may be missing is their historical evolution and relevance for the modern era. The authors provide this in a very easily understandable fashion.8/10/15: Now that I am finished reading, my rating and appreciation for the book remains unchanged. The second half of the book explains the origins of Islamic fundamentalism and the widespread popularization of Wahhabism by the corrupt but rich state of Saudi Arabia. It explains what it means to be "radicalized", a word often dropped without explanation. The roles of the failed "secular" post world war regimes (Nasser, Saddam Hussain, Qudhafi, Assad) and the "solution" offered by Syed Qutb are explained. There is never any doubt about the authors' political leanings ("Enlightenment Liberalism" as advocated by America and the West) and they have succeeded in not turning the argument into a simple polemic. They have touched upon the increasing socio-economic inequality as an outcome of laissez faire capitalism and have left the door open for further development of Marxism (post USSR devolution) and even the Iranian theocracy (although they don't favour them). Human desire to find "meaning" in life and the role religion plays in this is touched upon, but not elaborated in detail. Darwinism's myriad extrapolations (some good, some bad) are explored. Fascism is explained as well. The roots of historic and present-day anti Semitism are explained here than I have seen anywhere else. The authors admit that there are other "ideas" besides the four they chose that were at play and I agree. The ideas of Sigmund Freud, although not fully accepted in its original form today, led to a better understanding of the human mind and opened the doors to better treatment of mental disorders ("One Flew Over the Cuccoo's Nest") and the understanding of criminality; a process, like the others mentioned, that continues to evolve. All in all this is a good book for those who wish to understand and "connect the dots" (that's a cliche, but in the whole book I only found one cliche - "spot-on") and that was a great relief!

From darkness to light By Hande Z This is a vibrant book about the lives and ideas of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. I omit the comma after Hamilton because the fourth big idea, ‘Democracy’ is attributed by the authors to both Hamilton and Jefferson.Adam Smith whose book, ‘An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations’ continues to be studied to this day and ensured Smith’s well-earned epithet, ‘The Founder of Modern Economics’. The authors point to Smith's lesser known book, ‘The Theory of Moral Sentiments’ as an equally important work and that both books must be read together to properly appreciate what Smith was trying to do.Marx’s grand theory of history inspired a massive hope to mankind that has not materialised, and yet refuses to die. How did Marxism go wrong? That is an issue the authors examine in some detail, exploring how Stalin combined Marxist idealism with Lenin's practicality to create the brutal Soviet socialist regime.Darwin’s ‘On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life’ altered our understanding of nature and human. The authors describe Darwin’s ideas as dealing a ‘final, magisterial blow’ to the advocates of Divine planning, they write, ‘Nature, in all its glory, lost the quality of a sacred edifice and became instead an unending battle for survival and reproduction. Life was now a material process without any clear and final purpose, a “design without a designer”’. The long but wonderful chapter on Darwin includes the public attitude at the time and how Darwin struggled to get his theory out in print. The fourth and final big idea belonged to the differing views of Hamilton and Jefferson on the nature of government for America. ‘Hamilton saw a strong central authority, a large military, a federally driven industrial economy, and an active foreign policy. Jefferson wanted a weak center, local militias, a nation of yeoman farmers, and “entangling alliances with none”’. The compromise reached became the foundation upon which America built its democracy that, in recent times, it is hoping to export to the rest of the universe. The last part of the book is a fascinating study of the counter-enlightenment that is insidiously creeping back into the world, threatening to send us all back to the dark ages – the growth of fundamentalism in both Christianity and Islam, the new anti-Semitism, and the rejection of liberalism.

By GDP Fairness would seem to demand that a book be evaluated according to its authors' intentions, and to do so for this book one must look no further than their brief preface (pp. ix-x). The authors profess that the book "is about key ideas that have built the modern world" and that the "principle effort … has been to illustrate and clarify this theme by looking at particular thinkers and their system of thought." Importantly, they admit that the book is almost entirely based on secondary sources and that they "cannot claim that we have found new facts or even that we have as yet undiscovered insights about the individuals we have examined." It is, in short, an introductory text. That is well and good, but the low bar that they establish is not fairly described in the book's marketing blurb. Many readers with a basic understanding of the last three centuries (and the principle thinkers thereof) will find little new here and be disappointed. There is no disagreement with the historical figures they have selected for their study. Adam Smith, Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, and the "Odd Couple" of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, would be on most thoughtful peoples' short list of most impactful persons of the modern age (suggesting other names for study would be to quibble). Of course, most persons interested in such eminent thinkers will have already read a good deal about them, and this book will cover little new ground.A central theme of this book is that it suggests a world of little subtlety, where big ideas (perhaps once couched in some degree of nuance) are unleashed and seem to rattle about, playing out in extreme forms. Capitalism and free-markets, when unfettered, can be inhumane … check. Communism, well-intentioned, has proven "nightmarish" (p. 147) for mankind … check. Evolution has undermined the basis of scriptural creation stories … check. Democracies are in a constant tension as to individual freedom and centralized power … check. As for "counter-Enlightenment" forces such as nationalism, fascism, and religious fundamentalism (both Christian and Islamic), these are sketched out and critiqued. Of course, any devotees of these "counter-Enlightenment" philosophies are quite unlikely to read this book and accept its bromide: study the humanities so as to reconsider mindsets and to "critically read and understand foundational texts, to analyze belief systems, and to discover the complex arguments that have produced different movements, wars, institutions, national identities, and the like" (p. 435-36) in order to confront the challenges of the future. The premise that big ideas are an historical force and, in a significant way, influence our lives is credible. The idea that most people govern their lives by imbibing "foundational texts" and then rationally choose a path of conduct is naive, if not nonsensical. History is complex because lives are lived in response to circumstances and, largely, emotion and instinct. There are reasons that both capitalism and communism have produced ill-consequences … human nature resists "Reason" and seeks self-interest, individuals desire status and/or power, and emotional appeals to group bonds are seductive even when illusory. That is, it is not the ideas as much as the imperfect human agents who act upon them that determine outcomes (a reality the authors make several oblique references to, e.g., pp. 191 and 265).What seems to be missing in this book is the vast grey area most of us reside in, i.e., thankful for the many benefits that the rational and scientific aspects of the Enlightenment have brought, yet reserving for ourselves an acknowledgement and desire for the spiritual or transcendent. Maintaining some sense of balance between the two may define what it is to be "human."In a world with so many outstanding books to choose from, there is little to recommend this book beyond its stated intentions of being an introductory text on select thinkers with a cursory look at their impact. If that is what you desire, this book will likely satisfy you.

Excerpt from Essay on ClassificationHaving, however, made no essential alterations in this Essay on Classification, it may not be out of place for me to repeat here such parts of the preface to the first edition as may explain the special purpose of the treatise, and also the frequent allusions, which could not have been omitted without remodelling the whole, referring to chapters which belong to other parts of the work. The preface to the complete work above alluded to states that, in consequence of the liberality of the subscription in America, "this volume, which, according to the original plan, was designed to be one of special descriptive Zoölogy, contains, in addition to a description of the North American Turtles, a review of the classification of the whole animal kingdom. I have also endeavoured to make it a text-book of reference for the student, in which he may find notices of all that has been accomplished in the various departments of Natural History alluded to, and which I trust young naturalists will take, not only as an indication of what has been done, but as an earnest of what remains to be done in the fields now open to our investigation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A TRUE "CLASSIC" IN THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE By Steven H Propp Louis Agassiz (1807-1873), was a Swiss-born and European-trained biologist and geologist, who became a professor of zoology and geology at Harvard, and founded its Museum of Comparative Zoology. He was an opponent of Darwinian evolution, and his late writings supporting "polygenism" have diminished his reputation in the modern world. He also wrote Principles of Zoology. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to a 268-page hardcover edition.]He wrote in the first chapter of this 1857 book (published two years before Darwin's He wrote in the first chapter of this 1857 book (published two years before Darwin's The Origin of Species), "In considering these various topics... I shall, however, avoid controversy as much as possible and only try to render the results of my own studies and meditations in as clear a manner as I possibly can..." (Pg. 4) He adds, "The division of animals according to branch, class, order, family, genus, species, by which we express the results of our investigations into the relations of the animal kingdom... seem to me to deserve the consideration of all thoughtful minds. Are these divisions artificial or natural? Are they devices of the human mind to classify and arrange our knowledge... to bring it more readily within our grasp... or have they been instituted by the Divine Intelligence as the categories of his mode of thinking? Have we perhaps thus far been only the unconscious interpreters of a Divine conception in our attempts to expound nature?... do we not find in this adaptability of the human intellect to the facts of creation... by which we become ... unconsciously, translators of the thoughts of God, the most conclusive proof of our affinity with the Divine Mind?" (Pg. 8-9)He continues, "If it can be proved that man has not invented, but only traced this systematic arrangement in nature, that these relations and proportions which exist throughout the animal and vegetable world have an intellectual, and ideal connection in the mind of the Creator... that this plan of creation, which so commends itself to our highest wisdom, has not grown out of the necessary action of physical laws, but was the free conception of the Almighty Intellect... before it was manifested in tangible external forms---if, in short, we can prove premeditation prior to the act of creation, we have done once and for ever with the desolate theory which refers us to the laws of matter as accounting for all the wonders of the universe and leaves us with no God but the monotonous, unvarying action of physical forces, binding all things to their inevitable destiny." (Pg. 10) He concludes, "without a consideration of all the facts furnished by the study of the habits of animals, by their anatomy, their embryology, and the history of the past ages of our globe, we shall never arrive at the knowledge of the natural system of animals." (Pg. 13)He admits, however, about creatures, that "the manner in which they were called into existence remains for the present a mystery." (Pg. 15) But he asserts that "the elements in which the plants and animals live (and under this expression I mean to include all that is commonly called physical agents, physical causes, etc.) cannot in any way be considered as the cause of their existence." (Pg. 36) He states, "It is therefore quite possible that the different races of domesticated animals were originally distinct species, more or less mixed now, as the different races of men are. Moreover, neither domesticated animals nor cultivated plants, nor the races of men, are the proper subjects for an investigation respecting the fixity or mutability of species, as all involve already the question at issue in the premises which are assumed in introducing them as evidence in the case." (Pg. 63) He proposes that "the order of their succession and their immutability during such cosmic periods show no causal connection with physical agents... but argue in favor of repeated interventions on the part of the Creator." (Pg. 64)He also concedes, "I confess I could not say in what the mental faculties of a child differ from those of a young Chimpanzee." (Pg. 68) However, he adds, "[individuality] argues strongly in favor of the existence in every animal of an immaterial principle similar to that which, by its excellence and superior endowments, places man so much above animals. Yet the principle exists unquestionably, and whether it be called soul, reason, or instinct, it presents in the whole range of organized beings a series of phenomena closely linked together; and upon it are based not only the higher manifestations of the mind, but the very permanence of the specific differences which characterize every organism. Most of the arguments of philosophy in favor of the immortality of man apply equally to the permanency of this principle in other living beings... may we not look to a spiritual concert of the combined worlds and all their inhabitants in presence of their Creator as the highest conception of Paradise?" (Pg. 74-76)He summarizes, "All organized beings exhibit in themselves all those categories of structure and existence upon which a natural system may be founded, in such a manner that, in tracing it, the human mind is only translating into human language the Divine thoughts expressed in nature in living realities... all these facts in their natural connection proclaim aloud the one God, whom man may know, adore, and love; and Natural History must in good time become the analysis of the thoughts of the Creator of the Universe, as manifested in the animal and vegetable kingdoms, as well as in the inorganic world." (Pg. 136-137)He outlines, "I find that these divisions cover all categories of relationship which exist among animals, as far as their structure is concerned. BRANCHES or TYPES are characterized by the plan of their structure; CLASSES, by the manner in which that plan is executed, as far as ways and means are concerned; ORDERS, by the degrees of complication of that structure; FAMILIES, by their form, as far as determined by structure; GENERA, by the details of the execution in special parts; and SPECIES, by the relations of individuals to one another and to the world in which they live, as well as by the proportions of their parts, their ornamentation, etc." (Pg. 179)This book will be of great interest to anyone studying the historical development of Natural History.
