I have treated the matter of outfitting in some detail, not because elaborate outfits are usually desirable, for they are not, but because in town there is so much to pick and choose from. Thereafter, the body of the book is mainly given up to such shifts and expedients as are learned in the wilderness itself, where we have nothing to choose from but the raw materials that lie around us.As for camps situated within easy reach of towns or supply-posts, every one, I suppose, known best how to gratify his own tastes in fitting them up, and prefers to use his own ingenuity rather than copy after others. Real woodcraft consists rather in knowing how to get along without the appliances of civilization than in adapting them to wildwood life. Such an art comes in play when we travel "light," and especially in emergencies, when the equipment, or essential parts of it, have been destroyed. This is a classic book and since it's so well known amongst "outers" the world over, I don't feel a need to review the content contained within - although, if you love the smell of leather and canvas you'll find it intriguing. I had never heard of Horace Kephart, but bought the reprint of the book since Kephart is mentioned in HA Lindsay's 1959 book The Bushman's Handbook as a bit of a master in the woods.So instead of looking at Kephart's writing and ideas, instead let's look at the content and presentation of this particular edition of the book since I'm looking at my one right now. I uploaded the customer pics yonks ago before I'd even read the book.Just to be clear, my copy is a softcover, has a green and black cover with yellow writing and a stylized tent graphic. At the bottom of the front cover are the words "Field size 1910 heritage edition" in yellow. If this doesn't sound like the one you bought, then you bought some OCR'd crappy internet archive rehash so send it back for a refund.Inside, the book is meant to be fully illustrated with photos and line drawings - and indeed my copy is awesomely illustrated. Each page looks to be an exact reprint - my one is - rather than uncorrected text which has been run through a computer. Index entries should link up exactly to the correct page - my copy does. It should have a complete table of contents - mine does too. According to my copy, the page count is 331 pages. I've been reading and rereading this book for almost a year now and have yet to find a truncated or missing page. In short, it's perfect, just the way it should be for a book outdoor enthusiasts like us are willing to pay decent bucks for.Make sure you choose the decent, exact reprint copy since Amazon seems intent on lumping different editions of the book into the same listing. I should know because last year I was burnt when I bought a previous copy that had ZERO illustrations and missing sections. I sent it back for a refund and then purchased this one. It's a jungle out there.

By Walter Hoehn I could not be more displeased and strongly recommend against buying the hardcover "Scholar Select" version of this classic text. My eight year old son could make a more legible edition by taking freehand pictures with my phone. Before buying, look at the attached image, which shows how the vast majority of the pages appear. Crooked photos, source material not laid flat, beginning and ending sentences cropped out, out of focus... I could go on. It is simply impossible to read from one page to the next.

Google and the Librarians By Ron Titus John Palfrey channels passion and desire in making his case as to why libraries are relevant and more needed in this age of Google then ever. He works on presenting a rational, yet passionate plea for the role libraries played in America's past and the part he thinks it needs to play in the present and future for the betterment of society.Palfrey provides a list of what he considers the problems facing today's libraries: public use (and understanding of libraries); physical space versus virtual space; a desire to change libraries from locations to platforms (although he does acknowledge that hybrid libraries will be a necessity for the near future); networking for collection and preservation; and a decent chapter on copyright. He ends the book with a ten item list of what he thinks need to be done to make libraries relevant in the future.Despite his dry, passionate arguments, Palfrey's list strike this reader (a veteran librarian for 30 years) as well meaning, overdone, and often contradictory. They resonate with similar calls of action that have rung out over the years, been applauded by librarians and done little but deforest the land. Despite all the pleas and posturing, I foresee libraries continue to astound critics and supporters in the future despite all the grandiose plans made by library honchos because of the front line librarians' impact on students and patrons.

We are beyond this and so this work is redundant if not anachronistic.A now decades old discussion. Libraries have done wonderful work of making their holdings available onlinein catalogs and full text. As a teaching librarian in my experience in both public and academic libraries thereis still great demand and often preference for print versions. Each format has its advantages. What researcher will prefer seeing themanuscript online to in situ if he has the choice? What student will prefer reading Moby Dick online to holdingthe novel in his hands? Text searching tools in conjunction with online texts are marvelous.We can go on forever comparing and contrasting advantages and disadvantages but the bottom line isyou will be hard put to find humanists who will separate from print.

Read this book if you're working in the LIS field By Sunnysidemick As a candidate for an MLIS, I am very interested in how libraries can meet the challenge of digitization. This book didn't disappoint - the author has extensive experience with libraries and recounts some notable success stories of libraries transforming themselves into information and gathering spaces, and of librarians becoming guides in the digital universe. Highly recommended for librarians and MLIS students!

While this material may be just "common sense" for many people, I found it to be extremely helpful. As a widow who relied upon her husband for 35 years to take care of many of the day to day preparedness tasks, from finances to household repairs, yard work, and security, I have found it frightening to feel so vulnerable without him. I have watched Mr. Kobler's Southern Prepper 1 You Tube Channel and have learned a great deal. do it was only natural to purchase a book he collaborated upon. To have this information summarized and systematically presented is a great comfort to me and quite empowering to realize that I can, in fact learn to take care of myself, as well as perhaps learn new skills to help take care of others. As a retired pastor, I deeply appreciate that the authors begin their book with how to develop a strong spiritual foundation to enhance one's physical survivablility. The plan they lay out in the whole book should be easy for most people to follow if they are willing to develop the self discipline approach to prepping set forth in the book. I highly recommend the book for neophyte preppers. Well done.

As others have mentioned it goes beyond the "beans, bullets & band aids" and adds some very important items that many books fail to address... Body, Soul and Budget are often overlooked and I think they are really vital... I know it has motivated me to rededicate myself to increasing my level of fitness... Some have complained that the book is too short or too shallow... I can sort of understand that BUT I also think that it is good because of that... It is not a 600 page manual that a reader will get intimidated by and never apply because they are overwhelmed... I also appreciated how practical and applicable it was... Didn't get all bogged down in this brand vs. that brand... I also appreciated the fact that is revealed to me a couple of areas where I was out of balance... I don't think I am alone in thinking that because I have some training, I have done research, and because I am "at it" diligently that I automatically do things in the right ratio... I see in my life how some things I have neglected- and others where I can probably ease off a little until I restore the balance... But when I started having kids of my own, I stopped having dogs due to the additional care and attention it would require. However, I have always thought of getting a pet for my kids to play with and take care of.Now that I have read this book, I am almost sure I will get a new dog. Not only did this book made me understand dog behaviour, it also taught me how to train and discipline the dog so that we can live harmoniously under one roof. I love the how this book taught the proper interaction between kids and dogs plus the kind of game they can do.

I found the first chapter, on understanding your dogs behavior, to be particularly helpful. Knowing the reasons behind particular behaviors makes it much easier to correct them, i.e. dogs can be aggressive because of fear, lack of food separation anxiety, and other reasons. The more familiar a dog owner is with these reasons, the quicker he or she will be able to remedy unwanted behavior.

(Down Under Textiles, Issue 172)The 27 projects are simple, easy to make Christmas household decorations, cushions, wall hangings, runners etc. They are decorated with 'folksy' spindly reindeer and Father Christmas figures. There are three tree skirts. A selection of placemats are made using varying methods, some have appliqué, some are pieced, and some are woven. One wreath is a circle of fabric wrapped polystrene balls, another has raw edged leaves and holly berries glued to polystrene circle. There are coasters with snowflakes and robins. The instructions are fine for a sewist/quilter with a little experience but would be difficult for a beginner to follow. Looking forward to making some of the things in this book for Christmas this year.

Although I have not made any of the designs in this book as yet, it contains many cute Christmas ideas. I appreciate Ms Schaefer's whimsical designs for her applique patterns, always clear and well done..

The purpose of this review to assess the book itself, but not to evaluate the ideology contained within it except in terms of how it is conveyed. My opinion of and relation to Luciferian philosophy and ideology can and will be discussed separately from the review. The book is focused on philosophy and ideology and not ritual and magick, but it does explain the role of ritual and magick for the benefit of those seeking to practice such things, as well as symbolism. The book also talks about the Greater Church of Lucifer and the role it plays. The book is divided into two sections: the first focuses on the Luciferian philosophy and ideology, its roots, and the Left Hand Path and the Right Hand path, while the second section deals primarily with the symbolism of gods, demons, and myths, but also deals with the concepts of equilibrium, apotheosis, awakening, and the New Luciferian Area, as well as the concept of mental vibrations.The book introduces itself wonderfully, and what is also wonderful is the manner in which it introduces the Luciferian philosophy and the Greater Church of Lucifer. The cover itself offers a fine introduction to the eyes as well. The first section explains the philosophy in greater detail was excellent in its handling of Luciferian philosophy and ideology. In particular, the 11 Points of Power, the Luciferian Ideology section (split into seven parts), and the explanation of key myths particularly bolsters the evocative power of the writing of the book, together with the concise explanations generally found in the book. The second section makes use of the enchanting power of mythology more so than the last section, particularly with the attention it draws to the concept of the demon (or Daemon) and the Deific Masks. It presents the concept of the Daemon in a manner that proves very interesting, particularly as aided by Michael Ford's example and perspective. I also admire the manner in which the book presents the roots of Luciferianism in older pre-Christian traditions and the manner. Combined with the explanation of the value of both light and darkness, it really enchants me into seeing a pathway that is modern and yet with visible connect with older ideas. In the Equilibrium section, Jacob No offers a very interesting and scathing perspective of modern society, but it also lends a sympathetic viewpoint towards those in the current generation who are caught in the world that has been created the masses that came before them. It is something that can prove touching, and it may lead one to think be a sore disservice for the younger generations. Someone who is new to the Left Hand Path at all, let alone Luciferianism, will find him/herself very enchanted and indeed spellbound by the writings of this book perhaps more so than anyone else. The writing is highly evocative, certain to conjure energies, thoughts, and feelings through its vividly concise description of the concepts it outlines. I feel the individual will also be fascinated with its explanation of the symbols used by the Greater Church of Lucifer, particularly if he/she feels drawn to the symbolism. I might also mention that the book contains poems and prayers dedicated to the Luciferian philosophy as well as passages from previous works of Michael Ford, which can be used to enhance the evocative power of the ideas presented in the book, but the presence of "prayers" also provides something that can be utilized by the practitioners. The writing style of the book is not usually from a first person perspective from either of the authors, and most of the writing is either third-person or third-person but from the point of view of a group of people rather than one single person, which suits the nature of the book as a collaborative effort.Overall, I feel impressed by the book, and I also want to mention that it has at some point caused a fiery feeling to well up, as well as feelings of inspiration and courage. I won't go into it within the confines of this review, but I feel the book may have accomplished its intention and offered a way, and I feel it clearly has the power to do so with others. My only disappointment was that there seemed to be very little comparative description of Satanism (which is one of the reasons I sought to purchase the book), but that disappointment didn't last long because as I read further I found I was piecing a lot of the comparative element together independently. I can't say for certain whether or not this was intended by the authors.Rating: 4.5/5----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This has been a formal review conducted by Alexei Grasso.

Grace continues to charm By Bookphile My daughter and I have read every book in the Just Grace series, and even though she's getting a little too old for them, she keeps coming back for more. I understand why, because each book in the series continues to charm. Some minor spoilers to follow.As with the other books, this one is constructed in a specific way: Grace has a problem that she has to overcome and a fear that she must conquer. In this book's case, the problem she has to overcome is a lie she tells that grows into a story that's much bigger than she could have imagined. I liked this exploration of unintended consequences, and how what started out as a small thing can blow up into a much larger issue. What's additionally nice about the problem in this case is the unexpected aid Grace receives from a friend. I liked this show of solidarity and the idea that there are some people in our lives who accept our foibles and forgive us for them. Grace comes to the realization that this friendship has more facets than she'd understood. Though the problem is humorous to read about, it's not funny to Grace, and her anxiety feels very real. it's satisfying when the problem is resolved and when Grace has her moment of catharsis.As for the fear to be conquered, Grace is a little terrified at the thought of sleeping outside in a tent, where there are bugs. It doesn't help when Mimi and Robert offer Grace a choice tidbit about a beetle of unusually large size. I was very touched by the way Grace's dad steps in to help her out with this problem. Grace's dad has been a regular character in the series, but this was a nice chance to see the relationship between the two of them, and it's always nice to read a loving, realistic portrayal of the parent/child relationship in books for younger readers. I also like the message that sometimes you just bite the bullet and try the thing that frightens you. Grace's outcome is ultimately good, but even if it hadn't been, I like that the book is showing kids that it's okay to take calculated risks in life.Funny and lighthearted, this book is never preachy or heavy-handed with its messages, which is a hallmark of the series. Harper has a good grasp on what it's like to see things from a young person's perspective, and Grace's hopes, fears, and issues are always treated with respectful seriousness.These are lovely books from a talented author, and I look forward to the next installment!

I really can't say anything bad about this series. My wee one has been reading these since the beginning of 1st grade and still loves them now that she is 1/2 way through 3rd grade. She started reading this series on a recommendation from her wonderful school librarian. My little one was a very early, precocious reader, and Just Grace was challenging enough while still containing age-appropriate material. Now, my daughter reads these books just for fun...and fun she certainly has!JUST GRACE AND THE SUPER SLEEPOVER is written with the same formula as the rest of the Just Grace series: Grace has a problem or a fear to conquer, and she does, with light-hearted fun, mischief, humor, and great charm. There is a moral lesson to the story, imparted with gentleness and aplomb. In JUST GRACE AND THE SUPER SLEEPOVER, Grace is invited to her first slumber party. Not only is it her first slumber party, but it is a backyard camp out. Even though Grace tells everyone how excited she is for the slumber party, she is secretly afraid and ends up spinning a web of lies. But, with the help of her family and good friends, Grace overcomes her fears and learns the importance of telling truth.The Just Grace books are written in an almost stream-of-consciousness style. When my daughter reads them out loud to me, they sound exactly like what is going on inside her head. I can picture her thinking the same thinks that Grace does, word for word. Charise Mericle Harper definitely gets the rhythm and tone of an elementary school girl just right.My daughter and I will continue to read the delightful Just Grace series for as long as she enjoys them. JUST GRACE AND THE SUPER SLEEPOVER is MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

By Gaby at Starting Fresh blog Just Grace and the Super Sleepover is the latest in third grader Grace's adventures. Things are still going well between Grace and her best friend Mimi. They're in the same class, walk to and from school together, and are both invited to their first sleepover party.While Mimi is extremely excited to spend the night in a tent and stay up much of the night, Grace is apprehensive. It's hard for Grace to admit her fears and she finds herself hiding more and more things from her friends. There are quite a few funny passages as Grace debates with herself the extent to which hiding her feelings should be considered lying. As Grace avoids speaking her mind, she comes up with an unlikely story - which spreads and gets away from her.Friendship, quick thinking, and belated honesty help to make everything come right in the end. Along the way, we learn about the continents, geography, bugs, and about learning to speak up, even if you don't think your friends, teachers and family are going to like what you have to say. The book is told from Grace's point of view with her characteristic funny, honest, and likable voice. Highly recommended!

About the Author Robert D. Gatewood received his Ph.D. in industrial psychology from Purdue University. After accomplishing this, he first worked as a consultant for American Institutes for Research and then joined academia. His first position was as a member of the Department of Management at the Terry College of Business, University of Georgia. As has been indicative of his well planned career, Bob thought that he would stay at Terry for maybe five years because it would only take a few years for a smart person with three liberal arts degrees to get used to business schools and then move on to bigger and better things. Thirty-four years later, he decided that maybe it was time to move on. During these years, Bob climbed the academic ranks from assistant to full professor and pursued an administrative career at Terry as a department chair and associate dean in the College of Business. Bob was also elected to five executive positions, including President, within the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management. In 2005, Bob moved to the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University as the Director of the Executive MBA Program. In 2008 he moved to Denver, Colorado when his wife Chris became Dean of the Daniels School of Business at the University of Denver. He had the good sense to retire from faculty life at that point. As a consultant, Bob has worked with a number of companies; PPG Industries, Westinghouse, BellSouth, and Ford for example.Hubert S. Feild earned his Ph.D. in industrial psychology from the University of Georgia. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Management at Auburn University for more than 33 years and is now the Torchmark Professor of Management. His numerous articles have been published in such journals as ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, and PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY. He also has done many projects for companies like SONY, PPG Industries, GE, and AmSouth Bank. A former student athlete, he played baseball at Mississippi State.Murray Barrick obtained his Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Akron. He is head of the Department of Management as well as a Distinguished Professor and the Robertson Chair at the Mays Business School at Texas A&M. He previously served as a faculty member at the University of Iowa and Michigan State University. Dr. Barrick's first publication?featured in PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY in 1991?was recognized as the most frequently cited article in that journal during the 1990s. More recently, it was reported to be the most highly cited article in industrial psychology between 2001 and 2005. By April 2009, this one article had been cited more than 2,300 times (Google Scholar). Dr. Barrick's awards include the Outstanding Published Paper, the Owens Scholarly Achievement Award, and the 2009 Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, which he won along with Mick Mount. A former associate editor of PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY, he serves on the editorial boards of the JOURNAL OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY, and JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT. As for hobbies, Dr. Barrick enjoys biking across Iowa on the annual "RAGBRAI" ride. In addition, he has served as a keynote speaker in Pretoria, South Africa, and Melbourne, Australia; conducted tutorial workshops in Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand; and attended the occasional SIOP Conference.

Unlike the typical boring, dry textbook with bolded letters and highlights here and there. In addition to the style of writing, the content was also great. Covered a lot of important material in depth and cited empirical support for arguments/statements. I'm really glad that my professor chose this book!

If you enjoy reading 30 sentences in a row that convey the same exact idea then this is the book for you. If you like to be blindsided by fundamental concepts in very irrelevant places of the text, then this book is for you.
