The author tells the story of her faithful dog, Jack, whom she loves unconditionally and cares for. As he begins to ail and battle with his health, she suffers deeply, but finds ways to deal with the anxiety and emotional turmoil that sometimes overwhelms her. She shares the importance of taking stock of these emotions and working constructively with them, as it is only in the awareness of the fears around Jack’s visits to the vet and his subsequent slow departure to the other side, that she is able to effectively deal with the angst. In this way rather than identifying with his ailing body she becomes totally present in her loving support. She gracefully weaves practical tools into her story from using Emotional Freedom Technique to simply breathing consciously. She touches on the importance of self care to restore one’s energy and perspective during this challenging process.

Your book reached out to me when I needed it most By GittaW Many thanks for your book - it helped me so much in the run-up to my beloved Henry's passing. His illness followed a similar pattern to Jack's and it was such a comfort to read about your journey and not feel so alone with it all. You and Jack have made such a difference to us during such a difficult time. Thanks, hugs and more thanks, from the bottom of my broken heart.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, by Brett Morgen

Review "The companion book is essential to feel the full weight of the film as the more revealing quotes were omitted from the documentary itself, specifically some from Cobain's friend and Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic. Morgen understands how to use the two mediums to achieve his vision and the ultimate essential work to create the portrait of Cobain as a man. The film offers the bells and whistles but the book provides the real guts of the tale. Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck serves as a two-sided mirror and, appropriately, ends so suddenly without resolution."—Examiner

14 of 17 people found the following review helpful. It's nice to have some of Kurt's artwork printed in a ... By Imaginal Component This book is smaller than I was hoping, dimensions-wise. The text contains an "oral history" style chop-up of the interviews given by the seven people in Montage of Heck (Cobain's mother, sister, father and stepmother, plus early girlfriend Tracy, bandmember Krist Novoselic, and wife Courtney Love), plus a introductory forward by Brett Morgen, the film's director. With the exception of a few photos, all of the images in this book are culled from Montage of Heck; there's not much unreleased stuff. It's nice to have some of Kurt's artwork printed in a book, but a substantial amount of the images in this book are also animation stills that are either an artist's interpretation of Kurt, or adaptions of Kurt's artwork. I was hoping for more of a coffee-table style book dedicated to his artwork and unreleased journal entries, but this is a nice companion to the film nonetheless. Honestly there's not much revelatory in the interviews. Mainly we see how little the people supposedly closest to Kurt knew him: a lot of what they say contradicts each other. I'd suggest this book for diehard fans of Kurt, but it's not as nicely presented as the documentary itself is.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Nice companion book but nothing new... By Haley Kupper I purchased this book along after watching the documentary Montage of Heck. I expected it to have new content that was left out of the documentary but was sort of disappointed when I found it was mostly just a summary of the documentary and the new content was limited to about 5% (if that). I also didn't read the dimensions before purchasing and the book was a little smaller than I would have liked. What I did like about the book is it was organized very well and the quality of the pages (photographs, illustrations, excerpts from Kurt's personal journals) was excellent. I also really appreciated the author's foreword.I really only want this review to be a review of the product itself and not so much the content as the documentary was heavily publicized and if you are here looking at the book, there's a very high chance you got here because you watched the documentary or know enough/have been exposed enough to Nirvana/Kurt that you already have your own opinion anyway. To summarize, this book is a nice companion if you were a fan of the docu and have the cash to spend, otherwise don't expect a ton of new content or other revelatory information.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Donald, Donald, Donald! By Luvvic This is a great companion to the documentary. This book is a lot like that book of Nirvanas treasures, wherein there's personal photographs and stories told by family and friends. If you're a fan, this is a must have, you'll be happy with it. It's not a very long book so weigh that when you buy, don't complain later. Overall, for the price, I'd buy again, like I said, it accompanies the documentary so that's cool in and of itself. There's a lot of artwork I've never seen before and some letters as well. Courtney keeps a stronghold on all of that and maybe one day we'll get the full report when he becomes an estate, depending on how his daughter runs things. But for now, it's another glimpse and some great photos and stories. It's a smaller book, like 8x10. Grab it because we don't know when these things go out of print and that happens a lot and with no warning.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. genev By genev This Kindle e-book contains an interactive table of contents, thus providing the reader with easy access to any of the selections. Charles Hodge defines Darwinism as "a theory of the universe, at least so far as the living organisms on this earth are concerned." Hodge develops six different theories as to the Origin of the Universe, and especially of vegetable and animal organisms: The Scriptural Theory, The Pantheistic Theory, The Epicurean Theory, The Doctrine of Herbert Spencer, The Hylozoic Theory, and Unscriptural Forms of Theism. Summarizing only the Scriptural Theory, Hodge believes that the "God of the Bible, then, is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, goodness, and truth."...The origin of the universe is "not eternal neither as to matter or form. It is not independent of God...It owes its existence to His will."...the universe is "not a mere phenomenon. It is an entity, having real objective existence, or actuality....although God is extramundane, He is nevertheless, everywhere present...Man a part of the universe, is according to the Scriptures, as concerns his body, of the earth. So far, he belongs to the animal kingdom. As to his soul, he is a child of God, who is declared to be the Father of the spirits of all men."After discussing Darwin's theory natural selection in other sections Hodge provides (what he calls) 'proofs' from six advocates of Darwinism and from six opponents of Darwinism. His sections on the Relation of Darwinism to Religion, Causes of the antagonism between Science and Religion, and The Evolution Theory contrary to Facts and Scripture are helpful.Sadly, Charles Hodge lapsed by rejecting the plain meaning of Genesis because of alleged geological facts, which were really uniformitarian interpretations of facts. In his Systematic Theology (Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, Grand Rapids, MI, USA, pp. 570-571, 1997) he stated "According to the commonly received chronology, our globe has existed only a few thousand years. According to geologists, it must have existed for countless ages. And again, according to the generally received interpretation of the first chapter of Genesis, the process of creation was completed in six days, whereas geology teaches that it must have been in progress through periods of time which cannot be computed....It is of course admitted that, taking this account by itself, it would be most natural to understand the word in its ordinary sense; but if that sense brings the Mosaic account into conflict with facts, and another sense avoids such conflict, then it is obligatory on us to adopt that other."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. THE FAMED PRINCETON THEOLOGIAN CONCLUDES THAT “DARWINISM IS ATHEISM” By Steven H Propp Charles Hodge (1797-1878) was the principal of Princeton Theological Seminary between 1851 and 1878, and one of the greatest exponents of traditional Calvinism in America during the 19th century. His Systematic Theology is one of the true “classics” of Protestant theology.[NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 182-page paperback edition, with a 59-page Introduction.]This book was first published in 1874; this edition contains a lengthy and very helpful historical introduction by Mark Noll and David Livingstone. They also cite “Three Brief Notices” from some of his other works, such as Hodge’s statement from his Systematic Theology, “It is admitted that theologians are not infallible in the interpretation of Scripture. It may, therefore, happen in the future, as it has in the past, that interpretations of the Bible, long confidently received, must be modified or abandoned to bring revelation into harmony with what God teaches in his works. This change of view as to the true meaning of the Bible may be a painful trial to the Church, but it does not in the least impair the authority of the Scriptures. They remain infallible; we are merely convicted of having mistaken their meaning…” (Pg. 58)Hodge points out that Darwin “often uses teleological language, speaking of purpose, intention, contrivance, adaptation, etc…. It is affirmed that natural selection is the operation of natural laws… It is denied that it is a process originally designed or guided by intelligence, such as the activity which foresees and end and consciously selects and controls the means of its accomplishment. Artificial selection, then, is an intelligent process; natural selection is not.” (Pg. 86)He observes, “It is however neither evolution nor natural selection which gives Darwinism its peculiar character and importance. It is that Darwin rejects all teleology or the doctrine of final causes. He denies design in any of the organisms in the vegetable or animal world. He teaches that the eye was formed without any purpose or producing an organ of vision… it is this feature of his system which brings it into conflict not only with Christianity, but with the fundamental principles of natural religion…” (Pg. 92)He states, “It will be observed that every step in his account of the formation of the eye is an arbitrary assumption. We must first assume a thick layer of tissue, then that this tissue is transparent, then that it has cavities filled with fluid, that beneath the tissue is a nerve sensitive to light, then that the fluid is constantly varying in density and thickness, that its surfaces are constantly changing their contour, that its different portions are ever shifting their relative distances, that every favorable change is seized upon and rendered permanent---thus after millions of years we may get an eye as perfect as that of an eagle.” (Pg. 96)He argues, “According to Darwin’s theory, organs are formed by the slow accumulation of unintended variations which happen to be favorable… in the struggle for life. But in many cases these organs, instead of being favorable, are injurious or cumbersome until fully developed. Take the wing of a bird, for example. In its rudimentary state, it is useful neither for swimming, walking, nor flying… how long did it take to render a rudimentary wing useful?... There are but three kinds of locomotion that we know of: in the water, on the ground, and through the air; for all these purposes a half-formed wing would be an impediment.” (Pg. 117)He asserts, “A… cause of the alienation between science and religion is the failure to make due distinction between facts and the explanation of those facts, or the theories derived from them. No sound-minded man disputes any scientific fact. Religious men believe with Agassiz that facts are sacred. They are revelations from God… Religious men admit all the facts connected with our solar system, all the facts of geology, and of comparative anatomy, and of biology. Ought this not to satisfy scientific men? Must we also admit their explanations and inferences?... It is to be remembered that the facts are from God, the explanation from men; and the two are often as far apart as Heaven and the antipode.” (Pg. 133)He says, “No man asserts the immutability of all those varieties of plants and animals which naturalists, for the convenience of classification, may call distinct species. [Ernst} Haeckel, for example, gives a list of twelve species of man. So any one man make fifty species of dogs or of horses. This is a mere artificial distinction which amounts to nothing. There is a far greater difference between a pouter and a carrier pigeon than between a Caucasian and a Mongolian. To call the former varieties of the same species, and the latter different species, is altogether arbitrary.” (Pg. 143)He argues, “That this ordered cosmos is not from necessity or chance is almost a self-evident fact. Not one man in a million of those who ever heard of God either does doubt or can doubt it. Besides, how are the cosmical relations of light, heat, electricity, to the constituent parts of the universe and… to vegetable and animal life, to be accounted for? Is this all chance work? Is it by chance that light and heat cause plants to carry on their wonderful operations…? Is it without a purpose that water instead of contracting expands at the freezing point---a fact to which is due that the earth north of the tropic is habitable for man or beast? It is not answer to this question to say that a few other substances have the same peculiarity when no good end, that we can see, is thereby accomplished. No man is so foolish, because he cannot tell what the spleen was made for, as to deny that his eye was intended to enable him to see… If a man denies that there is design in nature, he can with quite as good reason deny that there is any design in any or in all the works ever executed by man.” (Pg. 154-155)He concludes, “We have thus arrive at the answer to our question, What is Darwinism? It is Atheism. This does not mean… that Mr. Darwin himself and all who adopt his views are atheists; but it means that his theory is atheistic, that the exclusion of design from nature is… tantamount to atheism.” (Pg. 156-157)This is a thoughtful critique of traditional “Darwinism” from a very important theologian. [It should be noted that Hodge was not a “young-earth” dogmatist; in his Systematic Theology, he said that the age of the earth and of man was “at present an open question.”] It will be of great interest to anyone looking for serious theological reflections on basic evolutionary theory.

Excerpt from Ray's New Higher Algebra: Elements of Algebra for Colleges, Schools, and Private StudentsAlgebra is justly regarded one of the most interesting and useful branches of education, and an acquaintance with it is now sought by all who advance beyond the more common elements. To those who would know Mathematics, a knowledge not merely of its elementary principles, but also of its higher parts, is essential; while no one can lay claim to that discipline of mind which education confers, who is not familiar with the logic of Algebra. It is both a demonstrative and a practical science - a system of truths and reasoning, from which is derived a collection of Rules that may he used in the solution of an endless variety of problems, not only interesting to the student, but many of which are of the highest possible utility in the arts of life. The object of the present treatise is to present an outline of this science in a brief, clear, and practical form. The aim throughout has been to demonstrate every principle, and to furnish the student the means of understanding clearly the rationale of every process lie is required to perform. No effort has been made to simplify subjects by omitting that which is difficult, but rather to present them in such a light as to render their acquisition within the reach of all who will take the pains to study. To fix the principles in the mind of the student, and to show their bearing and utility, great attention has been paid to the preparation of practical exercises. These are intended rather to illustrate the principles of the science, than as difficult problems to torture the ingenuity of the learner, or amuse the already skillful Algebraist.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I cannot say enough good things about these books. The one dilemma with this texts and many reprints of older works is that you encounter the occasional smudged or dropped text. - That being said what you do get from the text far outweighs this aspect.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. You don't have to love cars, the show or even Richard to LOVE this book! By Jan Ruley The first time I saw Fast N Loud I was in a small restaurant in the U.S. Virgin Islands. At the bar was a large group of fisherman (at least 20) gathered around a small TV. One man was loudly translating every word Richard and Aaron spoke into Spanish and the group watching was laughing and hanging on to every word. I had to find out what show this was and who these guys on tv were. A couple of months later I was in the same bar, must have been a Monday, cause all the guys were gathered around the TV watching/translating Fast N Loud again. Fast forward to now, and I can see why Richard has such a great following and family of fans all over the world.Everyone loves to see a good before and after, the show does that very well. But behind the finished build, we all know there's a lot of work that goes unseen (only so much you can show in an hour). A lot of people think Richard was made in a day, like the builds on the show, but this book dives deep into the beginning of a dream, all the hard work it took just to step away and pursue the dream, the people who believed in his dream, enough to jump whole heartedly into it, and eventually how 11 years later he became an overnight success. It's a really inspiring story with lessons that can apply to anyone, you don't have to love cars, the show or even Richard. Give it a read and you might be inspired to keep going, keep hustling and keep dreaming.I've had the pleasure of working with Richard and Gas Monkey Garage on a couple of video projects through a client and vendor of theirs. I'm impressed by their humility, realness and overall work ethic. I thought I knew the whole story, but this book filled in the blanks. I'm excited to see how the next chapters unfold.

Salazar Lozano Alfred Russel Wallace was a great naturalist of the nineteenth century, (codiscoverer of the evolutionary theory by means of natural selection with Darwin) he wrote several classics in science literature. Two things operated against him, his belief in the occult and the great prestige Darwin already had when he was just a young naturalist making great discoveries in Darwin's own line of investigation. This particular book was written when Wallace was a mature scientist and had already a prestigious carreer. He used his experience and previous works to theorize in Species Distribution through Islands all over the world. He personally made lots of field work (a marked difference with Darwin, since the latter suffered most of his life with bad health) and by then personally knew most of the elite scientists of that epoch. All this ingredients and many more make this a must read book for the science historian or anyone interested in the evolution of thought in the evolution theory. This reading is particularly interesting too, because all this was previous to the theory of continental drift and plate tectonics in 1915, so Wallace had to deal with the species distribution problem in islands without this knowledge. A must read book.

"Island Life" is a great book in species distribution. not never an introduction. If you want a book of introduction, you can try Edward Wilson's "The Diversity of Life" or David Quammen's "The song of the Dodo". The former half of the book is the theory of species distribution. Some are still useful and basic for now, but some are too old to be true. But the later half of case study is worthy of reading. There are many details in comparison of difference island. If you are major in biology or ecology, it is easy to read. But if not, I suggest you should read some introduction book first. The most interesting thing is that you can realize the nature world one century ago from this book. Some place are still natural and not damaged by human activities. This book is definitely a science study, not a general science. That's why I don't recommend it to everyone, but the naturalist.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. one of Wallace's enduring classics By C. H Smith Wallace is most remembered for his independent discovery of the theory of natural selection, but he was also the father of the modern approach to biogeographical studies, and history's foremost tropical naturalist--and he made many important contributions beyond biology as well. "Island Life" is one of his most important works. In it he extends studies begun in another of his classic publications, the two-volumed "The Geographical Distribution of Animals," to two subjects: the influence of the glacial epochs on organismal distribution patterns, and the characteristics of island biogeography. Many students of Wallace's career consider this book his finest scientific effort, both for its joining of theory and empiricism, and for his attention to detail and breadth of study. Included is a full working out of history's first theory of continental glaciation based on a combination of geographical and astronomical causes, a discussion of island classification, and a survey of worldwide island faunas and floras. I give it a "4" rating here only because *now* it is primarily of interest to historians of science and those environmentalists who might want information on the late nineteenth century state of island biotas around the world; still, as a major study by one the period's great minds, it arguably demands attention on its own terms.

Excerpt from Introduction to Higher AlgebraAn American student approaching the higher parts of mathematics usually finds himself unfamiliar with most of the main facts algebra, to say nothing of their proofs. Thus he has only a rudimentary knowledge of systems of linear equations, and he knows to nothing about the subject of quadratic forms. Students in this condition, if they receive any algebraic instruction at all, are usually plunged into the detailed study of some special branch of algebra, such as the theory of equations or the theory of invariants, where their lack of real mastery of algebraic principles makes it almost inevitable that the work done should degenerate to the level of purely formal manipulations. It is the object of the present book to introduce the student to higher algebra in such a way that he shall, on the one hand, learn what is meant by a proof in algebra and acquaint himself with the proofs of the most fundamental facts, and on the other, become familiar with many important results of algebra which are new to him.The book being thus intended, not as a compendium, but really, as its title states, only as an introduction to higher algebra, the attempt has been made throughout to lay a sufficiently broad foundation to enable the reader to pursue his further studies intelligently, rather than to carry any single topic to logical completeness. No apology seems necessary for the omission of even such important subjects as Galois's Theory and a systematic treatment of invariants. A selection being necessary, those subjects have been chosen for treatment which have proved themselves of greatest importance in geometry and analysis, as well as in algebra, and the relations of algebraic theories to geometry have been emphasized throughout. At the same time it must be borne in mind that the subject primarily treated is algebra, not analytic geometry, so that such geometric information as is given is necessarily of a fragmentary and somewhat accidental character.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I have to admit that as a Mathematician I have been greatly biased towards Geometry. Having been so fond of the classics of Geometry I have never given much thought to Algebra at the higher levels. What got me so interested in this book is that Bocher does not write in the dry banal style typical of most mathematics books. He has a great ability to present mathematical topics in a way that I personally believe clever high school students could learn from this.In short I would recommend this book for people who are:1. Thinking of becoming a Math Major/Minor.2. Students curious as to how "Math works/Algebra works"3. Preparing to take a course in Analysis or Linear Algebra4. Want a fun and interesting challenge.5. Wants to grapple with higher algebra without being overwhelmed with it.
