These letters were first published in the Denver Post during the summer and winter of 1986 and published in book form by Roberts Rinehart Inc.

Neat Collection By Evan the Dweezil What a dream assignment, to be able to hang out in Yellowstone and Grand Teton for the summer season and get to experience all that Yellowstone has to offer. I would have appreciated if some of the letters were longer and went into more detail because they were just teasers of what Mr. Carrier was up to in 1986. Letters was a short but interesting read.

“Choosing ignorance might seem a terrible quality to exhibit in your workplace—a sure path down the stairs and out the corporate door. But stick with me here and see how it leads you upward. You’ll understand why great leaders embrace ignorance and use it to elevate their people to new heights of achievement.”A conductor in front of his orchestra is an iconic symbol of leadership—but what does a true maestro actually do to enable the right sort of cooperation among his players, leading to an excellent performance? If you think his primary job is making sure the musicians play the right notes, prepare to be surprised. For twenty years, in addition to conducting orchestras around the world, Itay Talgam has been a “conductor of people” for companies large and small, for CEOs of Fortune 500 companies as well as startup entrepreneurs, and beyond. Drawing on his decades of experience on the podium, he teaches nonmusicians how conducting really works and how the conductor’s art can help leaders in any field. In his lectures (including an acclaimed TED talk) and now in this book, Talgam shows why imposing your vision on your people is likely to backfire. Great conductors may know in advance how they want a piece to be played, but they make room for the creativity and passion of their musicians. They respect the gap between the baton and the instruments. They focus more on listening than on speaking. And they embrace their own ignorance, knowing that others may have better ideas than the conductor can imagine.Talgam explores the nuances of leadership by describing the distinctive styles of six world-famous conductors: the commanding Riccardo Muti, the fatherly and passionate Arturo Toscanini, the calm Richard Strauss, the gurulike Herbert von Karajan, the dancing Carlos Kleiber, and the master of dialogue Leonard Bernstein. All took different approaches to the age-old leadership dilemma: how to maximize both control and creative freedom at the same time. The Ignorant Maestro will empower you to help your own team make even more beautiful music. Talgam’s anecdotes and insights will change the way you think about listening, humility, and the path to unpredictable brilliance.

The Ignorant Maestro: How Great Leaders Inspire Unpredictable Brilliance, by Itay Talgam

Review “An enthralling portrait of some of music’s most fascinating conductors that serves as a vehicle for a remarkably thoughtful study of leadership. No musical experience needed—Itay Talgam brings the baton-wielding personalities to life, and the lessons ring clear.” —STANLEY MCCHRYSTAL, author of Team of Teams   “Music is magic, and Itay Talgam’s book lets us stand beside him to revel in that magic in leadership and life.” —DAVID MARQUET, author of Turn the Ship Around!   “A great conductor stands alone in front of an orchestra but knows that it is the collective genius of the group that creates something incredible. In this book, Itay Talgam reveals the counterintuitive lessons that business leaders can learn from world-famous conductors about empowering organizations and audiences.” —RYAN HOLIDAY, author of The Obstacle Is the Way   “Talgam inspires us to think beyond leadership dogma and for the first time learn to truly listen.” —NIR EYAL, author of Hooked

About the Author ITAY TALGAM, a protégé and disciple of the great Leonard Bernstein, has conducted many prominent orchestras and ensembles worldwide, including the Orchestre de Paris, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic, and the Leipzig Opera House. He also teaches leadership to Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and universities, and at conferences around the world, including TED, Google’s Zeitgeist, and the World Economic Forum at Davos.

Sharp Some years ago I went to the Hollywood Bowl to see Zubin Mehta conduct the LA Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. I couldn't take my eyes off Mehta who is a rather small man off stage but he becomes a Titan on the podium. I felt that he was drawing forth from each member of the orchestra beautiful music by osmosis. That symbiosis between a conductor and his musicians, between a corporate executive and his company is what this interesting and provocative book is all about. Author Itay Talgam is both an orchestra conductor and a conductor of people, a guru for executives and corporations. The goal is the most beautiful music possible or the greatest achievements possible, and the hearts of all the players whether on Wall Street or Carnegie must be in the enterprise.A conductor is a virile, iconic symbol of leadership but a great maestro is not an autocrat. Whether a man is on a podium or in a director's chair, author Talgam explores and defines the nuances necessary to bring out the best performance in musicians or the fellow members of a corporation. An orchestra is not a place for prima donnas but every person whether a first violin or the guy that tinkles the triangle has to be imbued with enthusiasm, even eagerness and ambition to do his best not for glory to himself but glory to the whole. An executive has to allow for creative freedom in his group. He is the boss but he must supply his underlings with enthusiasm by letting them come forth with their own ideas. Passion is a big factor here. A violinist must play the proper notes but how he wrenches the tones issuing from his instrument is his to discover and make his own. But he is contributing to the whole, the glorious sound of a great orchestra. In between a conductor's baton and the members of an orchestra there is a gap. There is a gap, really, between all people. The maestro or the corporation CEO fills this gap by listening. The members of each may have great ideas, suggestions and sheer talent and the maestro or boss must have his ear to the ground. This is definitely a two way street. Neither the executive nor the conductor is in isolation on a pinnacle. Harmony can only prevail when everybody is allowed to do his thing. Not playing any old note, of course, but coaxing his instrument, being a dynamic member of a corporation group.Author Talgam explores the style of six world-class conductors. The approach in each case is how each maestro controls and yet inspires his players. It is helpful to run these famous musicians through Google to witness their performance on the podium. You can check out Arturo Toscanini temper tantrums (all bark and no bite), The six conductors are Riccardo Muti (autocratic but he pulls forth glorious music from his orchestra); the emotional and passionate Arturo Toscanini; the sedate Richard Strauss; the aristocratic Herbert von Karajan; the incredibly agile Carlos Kleiber; the charismatic, handsome Leonard Bernstein. The title “The ignorant Maestro” bothers me just a bit- it's that word ignorant. Certainly any executive, conductor or entrepreneur will find many gaps between himself and his players, areas in which he has to fill in and even embrace because hidden in those gaps may be superb talent, a wealth of ideas, cutting edge originality. But ignorant implies to me a lack of education not a lack of understanding, a lack of information of his group. But I won't belabor the point. The book is highly original, and Talman appears as a very knowledgeable and likable guy with plenty of talent to spare. The bottom line here is that when the players on a stage- any players, any stage- give up on self expression, “when the joy of discovery and creativity have been buried by routine” a vital element has disappeared. And somehow when I see a conductor raise his baton to signal the start of a piece, I am irresistibly reminded of Charlton Heston as Moses raising his staff and parting the Red Sea. Perhaps Moses and the conductor and the CEO are all part of the same thing.

That's when it suddenly came together and his words came to life.Talgam is an exciting conductor and the book alone doesn't do justice to his vibrant personality, which I think the reader needs to be familiar with to really appreciate his comparison of orchestra conductors to business leaders.I liked the book MUCH better after watching the TED talk - seeing the conductors that Talgam uses as examples in his book helped a lot in understanding the various approaches to leadership styles (even if you've never heard of him before, watching clips of Carlos Kleiber is worth that alone). You don't need to have a musical background to appreciate The Ignorant Maestro. But to really understand Talgam's message, I recommend watching his TED talk first. It will be 20 minutes well spent. Otherwise, you probably won't get much out of the book alone.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Be that maestro! By A. Dov Patrick You have 70 employees, a pressing deadline, famous competitors and hundreds of difficult clients waiting for the product just in front of you. What is your best strategy: to rule by precise orders and thinly veiled threats? To let every member flow creatively under your benevolent leadership? Would you lead by creative inspiration, by ruthless autocracy, by carefully engineered tactics or by your charm alone? You have to make a choice because you're the conductor now, at least for the next 220 pages: What will it be tonight, total freedom or total control?A little bit of both, of course.Itay Talgam writes beautifully, with an eloquent prose and timely anecdotes that are so rare in management books. His analysis of the 6-types of leadership, as illustrated by six famous conductors, is illuminating and should be required reading for business students and struggling politicians, for veteran managers and aspiring leaders. But above all this is a thought-provoking story about Empowerment, this tricky process that only truly great leaders learned to master. Itay Talgam is the ideal mentor for it -- funny, erudite, brilliant and immensely inspiring.

By NinerFan My 8 year-old son loved, loved the 2014, 2015 edition, so of course, I had to get the 2016 edition. From a kid's point of view, he said the photographs make the facts seem more interesting. From an adult point of view, I totally agree. There's just so many interesting stuff in the almanac. There's information on big cats, demolition, planets, Houdini, presidents, maps, and even planting a butterfly garden. There's a very detailed index in the back. I can see this book as a good source of school project ideas and reference when he heads to third grade next year. From our experience, even when my son was too young to read, he liked looking at the pictures and asked all kinds of questions. My son highly recommends this book to other kids and so do I!

A Good Book for Traveling By Anna Rowell (Written by a 10 yr old reader)“National Geographic Kids Almanac 2016” claims to have “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Everything!!” I’m not sure if it truly has everything about everything, but it does have a lot!The book has 351 pages of amazing facts and places, and it has a fancy cover. The book is divided into ten sections. Here is an example of one of the sections – “Your World 2016” talks about new inventions, cool stuff about the world, and about new events that will be happening in 2016.Almanac 2016 also has high quality photos that catch every reader’s eye. The book has wonderful photos of buildings, animals, and places. The photos make reading the book much more fun.The book has a great section for kids of all ages - a games section. In the games section, kids are challenged by unscrambling words, finding their way out of a maze, and searching for hidden things that are wrong in the scene. Children can also have some fun with Mad-Libs (which they call Funny Fill-In), jokes, a comic, and funny pictures.Almanac 2016 has an awesome section for animal lovers, it’s called Amazing Animals!! The section has outstanding pictures of animals, and it also shows information about them. The book even teaches you, “How to Speak Dog”!! You can read about dogs who work for the government and their jobs. You can read about so many different animals in the Amazing Animals section. The next section the book has is called Super Science. Super Science has a lot of cool stuff like new crazy inventions, decoding dreams, and “16 Heart Pumping Facts”! You can also learn about the Big Bang, the planets, and other space stuff. They also talk about the human body and life, and it has a quiz at the end.The other sections in the book are Awesome Adventure, Wonders of Nature, Culture Connection, Going Green, History Happens, and Geography Rocks. The parts of the book I liked most were the pictures, the cool stories about places and animals, and most of all, the fun facts that were added into the book, such as :• The Barrel Sponge is so large you could easily fit into one• The Amazon Rainforest in South America is nearly as big as the contiguous United States• If you caught a fever in Ancient China, your doctor would have prescribed you hot earthworm soupThis book is good to read in your spare time. I would read this book before bed, before or after school, or when I’m bored. My Dad found the book interesting too, so I would say that this is a great book for people of all ages to read. I love this book so much, I re-read some of it sometimes. I look forward to next year’s issue when it comes out.

A Great Choice for Children - and Adults Too By The Travel Insider This is a great book for tweens and teens, and probably good for people older and possibly younger, too. It is what I’d call a ‘toilet book’ – I better quickly explain that! It has short one and two page articles, all heavily and attractively illustrated in color, making it good for browsing and occasional/brief reading.I got a copy for my daughter (her review is somewhere here too). I wanted something to offer her as an alternative to the ‘screen time’ that fills much of her days, and something as a distraction for some long flights we were about to take together. To my delight – to our shared delight – the book quickly captured and held her interest, and it was a struggle to keep Anna from reading the whole thing before our travels commenced. Best of all (from my perspective as a parent) it was full of ‘useful’ information that encouraged her to learn new facts, and made the act/art of learning into an interesting and fun thing. I found myself picking up the book, reading it too, and simultaneously enjoying it and learning from it also.My sense is that it is more than a ‘read once then throwaway’ book. Because it has so many facts, it can be read many times and one invariably uncovers things one had previously overlooked or forgotten. That also means that even if your child skims through it quickly, they can still return back to it and keep rereading it – there are many hours of learning and, most of all, fun, between its covers. But, a word of warning to parents : There’s a danger your children will start asking you questions from the book’s material, and expect you to know the answers. Your carefully protected reputation for knowing everything will be at risk!I’d definitely recommend the paperback version over the hardback version, just to save weight if you’re thinking of using it as a take-along travel book. The National Geographic has been a welcome presence in our house since I was a lad, and probably for generations before that, too. It is great to see this latest ‘brand extension’ and it is wonderful to see Anna enjoying and learning from it too.A great gift that would be suitable for children of all ages, and of all interests.

Have you ever dreamed of building a model of a favourite railway station for your layout, whether it be a modest branch line station, or a large town terminus? Have you ever wanted to re-create a beautiful station that you have seen at a railway modelling exhibition, or in a magazine, and felt that you needed a helping hand? If so, this is the book for you. Ian Lamb, a modeller of enormous experience, demonstrates how almost anybody, regardless of their modelling skills, can construct a pleasing and presentable model railway station in even a quite limited amount of space. Six specific UK stations, some real and some fictional, are selected as modelling case studies and the author provides detailed, practical information about different aspects of their construction. Throughout the book the author provides step-by-step guidance and illustrations and emphasizes how - with patience- modelling skills, confidence and ambition can all be improved over time. Moreover, he is ever mindful of how costs should be kept down to reasonable levels and reveals how materials and tools can often be the most simple and inexpensive of everyday household items. Superbly illustrated with 304 colour photographs.

Art depends on our brains. By understanding what goes on in our brains…we can hope to deepen our appreciation of both the art and science." David Hubel, neuroscientist, Nobel Laureate Drawing: The Art-Science Connection; Pens, Pencils, and Neurons. With the advent of Cognitive Neuroscience, the divide between art and science is narrowing as the two domains explore their common interests – the human brain. Recent developments in imaging technology is making correlations that heretofore were not possible, providing us with answers as to the "what, why, and how" we do things – including the making of art. Hence the theme, purpose, and intent of this book, supplemented with over 300 informative illustrations.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Drawing is Thinking By Philosophy Professor This book is rich, detailed and learned and extremely well written and argued. It also made me want to draw again. The author selects a nice historical and conceptual mix of his own original illustrations and good clear examples, not overkill as many books do. Although the author is learned and well informed on brain science, he explains it simply and clearly and in a non-intimidating fashion. Above all what I took away was: 1. drawing is thinking and uses the same principles as brain science to render images, and 2. we are "context machines," constantly comparing this with that to arrive at a fully realized scene, composition, image, whether as perceivers or as artists creating those scenes. We are not limited to being left-brain or right brain people. The book is also great fun to read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Discovering Drawing by A Retired Teacher By donna banks Discovering Drawing by A retired teacher: Through this book I discovered drawing involves myriad disciplines. The author explores the areas of the brain,i.e. memory, creativity, motivation, and visual perception, and explains the role they play in the development of drawing. This book has given me a greater insight and appreciation for the process of drawing, art and design. I look forward to rereading various chapters to review the knowledge I have acquired. Finally, I have decided to attempt the principles of deliberate practice, outlined by Banks, to add dimension to stick figure drawings.

In helping my students prepare to creatively design solutions to unmet customer needs, we talk about conditionalizing our knowledge in the product design space. When teams work together creatively, brainstorming, drawing is a means to quickly visualize concepts for the team to build upon; that is, prototypes - at least in 2-dimensions. This book provides clear pathways to develop and enhance our drawing skills and helps us understand how to concretely visualize our abstract ideas

Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

Koji Kondo's Super Mario Bros. (1985) score redefined video game music. With under three minutes of music, Kondo put to rest an era of bleeps and bloops-the sterile products of a lab environment-replacing it with one in which game sounds constituted a legitimate form of artistic expression. Andrew Schartmann takes us through the various external factors (e.g., the video game crash of 1983, Nintendo's marketing tactics) that coalesced into a ripe environment in which Kondo's musical experiments could thrive. He then delves into the music itself, searching for reasons why our hearts still dance to the “primitive” 8-bit tunes of a bygone era.

What musical features are responsible for Kondo's distinct “Mario sound”? How do the different themes underscore the vastness of Princess Peach's Mushroom Kingdom? And in what ways do the game's sound effects resonate with our physical experience of the world? These and other questions are explored within, through the lens of Kondo's compositional philosophy-one that would influence an entire generation of video game composers. As Kondo himself stated, “we [at Nintendo] were trying to do something that had never been done before.” In this book, Schartmann shows his readers how Kondo and his team not just succeeded, but heralded in a new era of video games.

Koji Kondo's Super Mario Bros. Soundtrack (33 1/3), by Andrew Schartmann

Review

“Koji Kondo's Super Mario Bros. Soundtrack gave me a greater appreciation of something that appears to be so simple on the surface.” ―Pure Geekery

“Andrew Schartmann's extensive, thoughtful treatise on Japanese composer Koji Kondo and his work on the soundtrack to the original Super Mario Bros game is probably the most unusual entry in the 33 1/3 music chapbook series … As Schartmann demonstrates, Kondo's work on this seminal game – and the legacy of industry influence that followed – is much more than the primitive bleeps and bloops we all remember …” ―Critics at Large

“Andrew Schartmann does both the spirit of the series and video game history proud with his investigation into the iconic music from Koji Kondo. Matching a fanboy's sensibilities with serious scholarship, Schartmann provides the reader with an engaging discussion of Kondo's themes and ideas, both in terms of stylistic flair and compositional acumen … Of equal importance are his excellent research skills, as he collects worthwhile source material and pairs them [with] compelling quotes from Kondo and other luminaries at Nintendo to make his case for this soundtrack's inclusion in the 33-1/3 series. The result is a superb blend of professional musicology and video game nerdery.” ―Dryvetyme.tumblr.com

“Koji Kondo's Super Mario Bros. Soundtrack comes in at 120 pages, not counting the notes and preface, which appears well on par with other books in the 33 ? series. It's a book that takes itself seriously, as it should, and soundly proves the case that video game composition is worthy of discussion among keepers of music as a craft. If you have an appreciation for game music, this is worth buying. Even if you don't get a few parts, they're only likely to make you admire the work and design that go into composing all the more.” ―Tim Latshaw, NintendoLife

“The most compelling aspects of Schartmann's book involve the widening circumference of Kondo's imagination, the possibilities he saw in this new world of electronic composition. The move to home consoles had freed video gaming from the initial, "hailing" approach to sound...It's Schartmann's sense of conviction, the hyperbole that occasionally frames his dive into composition and structure, that gives the book its charm.” ―Hua Shu, The New Yorker

“There's something ballsy about including a videogame soundtrack in the 33 1/3 series since it's not a traditional album per se, though Andrew Schartmann makes a compelling case for Koji Kondo's score for Super Mario Bros.” ―Ruby Hornet, Hubert Vigilla

About the Author Andrew Schartmann holds degrees in music from McGill and Yale University. He is the author of Maestro Mario and the assistant editor of DSCH Journal.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great little book. By Bob G. At three minutes long, written in a style for children, the music of Super Mario Bros. may not seem worthy of a 168-page book. But its four main songs (Overworld, Underworld, Water, and Bowser Castle), shorter themes (like the Starman music and Level Completion), and sound effects are iconic. Dozens of games re-arranged the music and hundreds of new arrangements can be found on Youtube.Schartmann argues that nostalgia alone doesn't explain its appeal. The music is charming and full of character and atmosphere. It was also innovative. He goes into the background of Super Mario Bros. and what made it unusual for its time, coming after the arcade revolution, when music mostly consisted of flashy sound effects. He also examines the music's voice leading, rhythms, harmonic structure, form, as well as its imaginative sound effects. The score excerpts are well transcribed, better than anything you'll find on the web. Separate voices are designated as square-wave, triangle-wave, etc., and are stay within their staves, instead of the quick and dirty piano reductions you usually see. The time signatures and tempos are consistent with standard notation (e.g., the simple cut-time signature for the Overworld theme, instead of the ridiculous "Quarter Note = 200" designation you may see on the web). The book doesn't include a full score, which isn't in its purview and would probably be a copyright violation. The book also as a thoughtful interview with an NES composer who points out the different styles of composition in the West vs. Japan, which often involved pushing the limited sonic capabilities of the NES via clever programming (the West) vs. catchy tunes and more traditional voicing (Japan). The writing and analysis is solid, but alternates between fanboy-ish and academic. No big deal if you're used to reading music theory papers, which are far more dry. Probably not ideal for a general reader. On the plus side, it's footnoted and has a full bibliography, in case you want to subject yourself to even more academic writing. As a whole, a great book if you're interested in video game music.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Our Book Review in The Garden Island Newspaper (Kaua'i, Hawai'i) By Talk Story Bookstore " 80’s video game? No wait! The MUSIC of an 80's video game? Exciting reading? You bet! Did you know that Koji Kondo's soundtrack to the Super Mario Bros. game revolutionized the entire video game industry and forever changed the way our society interacted with video games? Yep! That one game's music took us from the era of ubiquitous “bleeps” and “bloops” of the 70's to the game music of today, where now entire orchestras are assembled to record just a single game’s soundtrack. How did this happen? What made this music so profoundly influential? In “33 1/3 - Koji Kondo’s Super Mario Bros. Soundtrack”, Andrew Schartmann, PhD, (music degrees from Yale and McGill) provides us with a keen and highly-educated insight into how Koji Kondo, the first composer ever in history to write a musical score for a video game, was able to take an incredibly limited instrument (a five-channel sound chip with a narrow range of possibility) and develop, with his fellow programmers at Nintendo, an entirely unique philosophy of composition to create one of the most memorable tunes of a generation, while at the same time paving the way for future video game composers to explore an entirely new musical art form. Andrew also presents a very illuminating history of game music and an intriguing explanation of the tool of their musical medium. His respect for the incredible collaborative and creative process is present in his handling of the subject and he proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that music—in all its forms—truly is an art! The gaming industry has affected all of us in one way or another and that is why this book is an exciting look into our modern history. . . . "

It gives some really nice context with the state of video game music at the time and the influence of the Super Mario Bros. tunes. It goes a little bit more into music theory/composition elements than most books, not too deep. Having taken a harmony 101 class would be helpful but i'm pretty sure you'd be fine without it. I could see a non-musician getting a bit lost when he gets into the details and the written sheet music examples though. Having said that, the fact there is only 3 minutes or so of unique music to discuss does allow the author to be thorough and the result makes an engaging and interesting read. I think during the section on sound effects he harps a bit too much on the obvious "notes going up = good, notes going down = bad" thing, but the rest is great.

Quite simply, there are no other books out there that spell out the lessons that most of us waste valuable time learning by experience. It is also straightforward and easy to read and digest... A new graduate will definitely have a tremendous return on their very brief time investment in reading the book... Highly recommended!

From factory, floor to tallest tower, this book has somethings in it for all.Easy read, with bullet points of the key notes of the book. Many points in the the book are "duh, I know that' moments but then he gives a real life scenario and you say ' ah now I get it.'I was concerned that it may be too 'text booky' coming from a college professor, but I found it an good read and informative.iain m kelly, B.Sc., O.D.

Practical guide for understanding the workplace By karrows As a career coach and outplacement counselor, I found this book to be relevant and practical for those in the workplace or who are transitioning into a different career or job opportunity. Many of the 50 keys are highlighted by examples of situations that, in my experience, are realistic as well as those that provide insight into why things happen as they do.

Excerpt from Biologia Centrali-Americana, Vol. 4: InsectaThe Heteromen include numerous heterogeneous families of Caleoptera, which agree inter se in having their tarsi distinctly 5-, 5-, 4-jointed; and in the whole of the species here enumerated, Mophon tinctipennis, which has 4-jointed anterior tarsi in the male, is the single exception to this formula. The only other Coleoptera likely to be confounded with the Heteromera are certain members of the Cucujidæ and Cryptophagidæ, belonging to the Clavicorn-series, which have the hind tarsi 4-jointed in the males and 5-jointed in the females. The Heteromera comprise a greater variety of forms than any other of the main divisions of the Coleoptera, nearly all of which are, as it were, reprodeced here. As examples of this assimilation, the following genera are especially noteworthy, viz.: - Statira (Lagriidæ) to various Carabidæ (Agra, Calleida, &c.); Cuphotes (=Spheniscus) to Cypherotylus (Erotylidæ); Doliena (Tenebrionidæ) to various Cucujidæ); Uroplatopsis (Lagriidæ) to various Hispidæ (Uroplata) and Lycidæ; Calopus (Œdemeridæ) to various Telephoridæ; Nilio to various Coccinellidæ and Endomychidæ; Zypates (Tenebrionidæ) to Epierus (Histeridæ); Paratenetus (Tenebrionidæ) to various Cryptophagidæ (Cryptophagus and Corticaria). Probably no better cases of so-called 'mimicry,' or homochroism, can be found amongst the Coleoptera than exists between certain species of Cuphotes and Cypherotylus, and between Uroplatopsis (U. mimica) and Uroplata (U. dimidiata).Fourteen families altogether are represented in Mexico or Central America, which are here dealt with in two volumes: the Tenebrionidæ, Cistelidæ, Othniidæ, Nilionidæ, and Monommidæ in the fist; the Lagriidæ, Melandryidæ, Pythidæ, Œdemeridæ. Xylophilidæ, Anthicidæ, Mordellidæ, Rhipidophoridæ, and Meloidæ in the second volume.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Chase To anyone wondering, this is Vol. 4 Part 1 only of the Coleoptera of Biologia Centrali-Americana, not all seven parts of the volume. It's cited as 660 pages which is only enough to hold the first part, and its description is listed straight from the introduction of Part 1.There's nothing wrong with that, but if you're looking for any of the other partslike I am, this is not the appropriate book.
