From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—In response to a letter from his Grandpa, Joe is happy to convince his grandfather that he deserves a special trip planned for later in the summer. He is definitely not forgetting about his schoolwork. Joe is reading, writing a book, solving word problems, studying history, and even learning cartography. What he doesn't mention is that he is learning all of this through his fascination with ice cream. Joe eats it and draws it, builds it and dreams it, and even knows the ins and outs of how it came to be. When Joe finds out where they are going on their special trip, it is the cherry on top of a fantastic summer. This book is fabulous for teachers introducing a unit on letter writing or research skills. The facts about how ice cream was invented are interesting and presented in a cartoonlike manner that children will find entertaining. Sís's illustrations are done in a beautiful rainbow of watercolor, making readers feel the warmth of summer and the cool delight associated with this delicious treat. Children will love finding all of the ways that ice cream is incorporated into each picture. VERDICT A great choice as a tool for teaching or simply as an enjoyable read.—Amy Shepherd, St. Anne's Episcopal School, Middleton, DE
Review * "In every one of the exquisitely detailed images, ice cream appears in many guises: waves on the beach are scoop-shaped, and sandcastles have cone turrets; the bases on a ball field are ice cream sandwiches; even Lady Liberty holds a cone aloft in place of her torch. Oh, yum." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review * "Sís’s illustrations are done in a beautiful rainbow of watercolor, making readers feel the warmth of summer and the cool delight associated with this delicious treat." -- School Library Journal, starred review "It’s a winsome treat, with some nutritious facts…sneaked in." -- The New York Times

With Ice Cream Summer he’s a sure fire contender for another. This story revolves around a little boy, who responds to his grandpa’s letter asking about his summer activities. As Joe writes about his “delicious” summer the amusing illustrations are filled with visions of ice cream cones that have intruded into every aspect of his surroundings. In his room the shelves, toys and animals all have ice cream cones as part of their construction. At the beach the boats, the waves and even the sandcastles have ice cream images. Joe tells his grandpa that he’s practicing math but the pictures let the young reader know that he’s doing this by adding and subtracting scoops of ice cream in his cone. The latter part of the book deals with a little of the history of ice cream but is told in such a whimsical manner that the reader will not suspect they’re getting a history lesson. And finally, when gramps shows up for their special trip – well, I won’t spoil the story by telling you where they go.This is a charming book with both story and pictures by the talented Mr. Sis and it will be a sure fire winner for your 4 to 6 year old.

Personally, I liked "Ice-Cream Summer" better than his Caldecott Honor Book called "Tibet Through the Red Box"."Ice-Cream Summer" is for a younger child than his Caldecott Honor Books--perhaps a Pre-Kindergarten to first grade student would enjoy this book!"Ice-Cream Summer" is centered around a boy's response to his grandfather's letters. He tells his grandpa about all his summer activities. There are several things I like about this book. I like that Sis adds some history, he encourages children to be inventors and to explore. He encourages children to read and write and enjoy learning. Hidden and "not so hidden" on each page are ice-cream cones...big and small with various colors too. One student enjoyed finding all the hidden cones and counting them as he went.I used this book the last week of school in my classroom. We did some other "ice-cream" activities and the students ate ice-cream (in a bowl) will I read "Ice-Cream Summer". Though my students enjoyed this book and there is much to see on each page, I did take one star off. I thought the ending was very dull and anti-climatic. It just seems like Sis needed to draw the story to a close and he didn't know how to tie it up nicely. But overall, my students loved it and that's what matters.

Ice Cream Summer By - A Joe gets a letter from Grandpa asking how his summer is going and hopes he'll hear about everything he's learned when they meet for their special trip.Joe sends grandpa a letter back telling him all about just how "delicious summer" has been! But assures him that he hasn't stopped learning or forgot about school during his vacation. Joe tells him just how busy he's been and the reader sees just how busy he's been through all of the adorable pictures. He's building ice cream sand castles, reading every day, and learning new words. The younger set that this book is focused for is sure to learn some new words themselves, like "conquering", "equation", and "cartography". Joe assures his grandfather that he's busy with math equations, reading the encyclopedias he gave him and learning some History. All of the things that Joe learns about or does is ice cream related in his mind. He goes to the beach, summer camp, and on field trips. He's sure to prove to grandpa that he definitely deserves the special vacation he's planning. There are so many ice cream facts that are located within the pictures. You learn who made ice cream, how it is made, and even some of the important people that love ice cream almost as much as Joe does! The facts are done in such a way that my little one's didn't even know they were learning these facts. It's also become a recent favorite on our bedtime reading shelf.Peter Sis will show you one little boy who loves ice cream and teach you a few facts you probably didn't know. The beautiful watercolor drawings made me think summer and all of the fun and relaxing things that come with it. If only we could have that weather here in New England all year round. Our family loved this book and found it to be a fun and fascinating read. Highly recommended!
