The book explains everything you need to know about shadow puppetry. It's got easy to understand text, step by step illustrations not only to make the puppets, but the stage as well. This book is great for school projects, girl scout and boy soout projects and any one who wishes to give shadow puppetry a whirl

By Yann Charaoui If you're interested in shadow puppetry, this is the book for you.It covers all the main aspects of the genre; history, techniques, fabrication, lighting, etc...The quality of the images are stellar, the text is easy to read, the research thorough.I really think this book is a little gem and has become my reference for shadow play theater.

I actually purchased two additional books on shadow puppets for an upcoming performance. THIS book covered a little bit of everything from types of shadow puppets, materials, staging, lighting set-ups and positioning, fastening methods, colored shadow puppets, and more! Tons of beautiful photographs so it's easy to see exactly what is being written about. There are not "templates" to photocopy and make your own puppets, or printed scripts/ stories. The book is focused on professional use of shadow puppets. Our show starts in a week and without this book, we'd be having a hard time "figuring things out" on our own. I've never felt compelled to write a product review before, but this book is just THAT great!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Starting Point for Learning Dutch By Melissa Alton I love all the vocabulary packed into this little gem! Two suggestions that I know would have helped me a lot.1. I loved how you had a YouTube link, however, a YouTube link for each chapter with you pronouncing all the vocab from that chapter would have been really helpful. I'm also using Duolingo, which I really love, but the one thing it lacks, that you have, is pronunciation in the native tounge; and correct pronunciation is one thing I'm really struggling with right now. Your phonetic spelling was helpful, but hearing it is much better.2. Also, I would have liked to be able to download all the vocabulary words, so I can practice them anywhere. Can't wait to start the second book; after I get better at the 1st, that is!Bedankt!

Even though this book is very well to learn the basics to the Dutch language... The book is made very very sloppy. There's a typos in the book and one thing that bothered me a lot was when I came to the animal pictures. By some animals the name is actually on the other page than the picture, which makes it look like they didn't print the book right...

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful book for both new and experienced writers By WAYNE DAVIES This is a wonderful little book about how to write a nonfiction book. The author is Shelley Hitz, a successful writer and book writing coach. I highly recommend this book for the following reasons:1. It’s short. It’s only 46 pages, but don’t let that fool you. This book accomplishes its goal. It’s categorized by Kindle as a “Short Kindle Read.” More specifically, a 90-minute short read. Well, it probably won’t take you that long. I read it in about 45 minutes, and I’m a slow reader.2. There’s no fluff. I like a non-fiction book that tells me just what I need to know about the topic. Why fill a book with unnecessary words? The author is a master at explaining things thoroughly with few words. Brevity is an art, and this book is a masterpiece in the world of short Kindle books.3. This book is well organized and well written. First, the author covers 10 ways to outline a nonfiction book. Then she explains 3 ways to write a nonfiction book. It’s all laid out for you. The author’s writing style is conversational and easy to follow.4. The ideas presented are immediately usable. I’ve written over 10 nonfiction ebooks and over the years I’ve developed my own approach to writing. But this book challenged me to take the process of outlining to a new level. I usually know my topic well enough that I haven’t seen the need to put an outline in writing. Well, thanks to this book, I now see how beneficial it is to write an outline before writing the book. Of the 10 methods of outlining, I decided to give “mind mapping” a try. I had never used a mind mapping software program before, so I followed this book’s advice and downloaded a free program called FreeMind. I spend 15 minutes familiarizing myself with the program, which is very intuitive. Then I gave it a try. I used it to create an outline for a new book that I’ve wanted to write. I can tell you that this FreeMind program worked like a charm. Once I got into the flow of how this program works, I found my creativity increasing and it became easier to express my ideas. When I started writing the book itself, the writing went much faster. So I’m hooked on not only doing an outline, but using FreeMind to stimulate my thinking and create the outline.5. There are plenty of ideas for everyone. I like mind mapping, but that’s not the only way to outline a book. I like to sit at the computer and type; others may prefer to stand up and walk around when they are brainstorming. Everybody is different, and Shelley recognizes that. The book presents many diverse ways to outline a book, such as using a whiteboard or sticky notes or good old pen and paper. So I like that this book does not try to pigeon hole you into outlining only one way.Whether you are an experienced author or working on your first book, this book can help you become a better writer. Without reservation I give it five stars and two thumbs up. I was provided this book by the author in exchange for my honest review.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Very superficial, obvious points, no useful depth at all By Amazon Customer Sorry to say, but this book wasn't very useful at all. So many Kindle authors crank out really lightweight "books" these days, hardly more than a short collection of their stream-of-consciousness thoughts or ideas that come to their mind. This book was one of them. For example, the main part of the book was on 10 ways to outline your book. You would think it would talk about ways of identifying topics, subtopics, organizing, trimming, and expanding actual outlines -- about outlines. But instead, the 10 ways were use a white board, use post it notes, use various software programs, use pen and paper, etc. Duh.Same thing for 3 ways to write your book -- dictate it, type it in blocks of allocated time, or hire a ghostwriter. How useful is that?I would not recommend this book to anyone. The only thing I can respect about it was that it was priced for free, and only took 5 minutes or so to read.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Short, neat, practical, sensible, readable and fun By Sheila Deeth Author Shelley Hitz tells how it took her a year to write her first book, and a week to write her most recent one. To be honest, that doesn’t encourage me to spend my hours reading it. But this short book on writing kindle non-fiction ebooks is filled with encouraging, practical, simple and helpful suggestions. So perhaps the author’s method really works. Perhaps having read it, I should give it a try. If you’ve been dreaming of writing non-fiction, perhaps you should do. And if your dreams tend more toward fiction, you’ll find suggestions that are just as helpful with that venture here.Do you have time to write? Do you make time? What will you give up, because with giving up a few hours of something, you’ll never find those few hours a day for your book? The author asks these questions with encouraging comments and wise suggestions.Do you know what you know? Write stuff down, she says, and find out; then consider what your readers want to know.Do you have a plan? Where did you put your notes? And have you ever tried speaking what you want to say?How to write a book is short, neat, practical, sensible, readable, and even fun. And it’s highly recommended.Disclosure: I learned it was being offered free, so here I am writing a review instead of writing my next book.

"The Secret Lives of Chickens or Tales from the Chickenyard and Beyond" describes life with chickens, chicken behavior, and chicken community, a hidden life that isn't generally associated with chickens. There are tales about chickens and their pecking order in the chicken house, chicken yard, and out in the great beyond, which was the creek and fields nearby. The times and places seem simpler but actually are not, because of the feathered inhabitants within. Although the chickens and their lives are the main characters, "The Secret Lives of Chickens" relates stories about other birds and animals around the chickens. Chickens have their own culture that is more complex than we assume. They are stalwart little feathered beings that live with equanimity in the world around them, following the time-honored rules of the flock, day-in and day-out, in a generally pleasant and peaceful frame of mind. These are tales that happened over many years' time, but with chickens, it seems there is always more to learn. Each and every life is deeply touched by something or someone special. It doesn't matter who or what it is, because the soul recognizes and responds to what is honest and true, to a bright sunflower, to endless, soothing ocean waves, and to the soft cooing of contented chickens.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A true delight By Steve Bartholomew I am not a farmer and have never raised chickens, but I found this book both entertaining and instructive. The author doesn't focus on the techniques of chicken breeding. Instead, she examines the social, political and spiritual lives of these so-called lowly creatures. We can perceive many reflections of the human condition in the daily struggles of the flock. Their leader is the rooster Sarge, who dominates, protects and guides his charges. If only our human leaders were so dedicated to the well-being of their citizens. This is a book to curl up with by the fireplace on a quiet night. Or read it to your children, so they will learn where eggs come from. By the way, the pictures are great, many of them taken with a Kodak box camera which one day chose to self-destruct.

By Sonya Thomas This is a humorous, often tender account of the author's chickens in rural Northern California.Ms. Franson's style is clear and compassionate. She portrays her feathered friends withoutsaccharine sentiment, but with bemused affection, and does not shrink from describing theirwiles as well as their 'feather-brained' activities. The book is suitable for reading to or by allages.

I had never been around chickens until my neighbors started raising them and the chickens began to inhabit an area very near our deck. I knew there was some kind of social interactions going on out there and this author has eloquently confirmed it. Just a most joyful reading experience.

Not only is it convenient to use, it has a great space to right an index in front of the book, and numbered pages. There's plenty of lines per page that allows; servings, prep time, and cook time. There's 2 separate sides per page. First row is for ingredients list, second row is for directions, and at the bottom of the second row is a Notes Section. All in all, I am going to get a few of these to log all my healthy recipes to. Since my diet consists of "S" meals, and "E" meals, I can separate them in 2 different journals. So convenient!

Excerpt from A Treatise on Adulterations of Food and Culinary PoisonsThis Treatise, as its title expresses, is intended to exhibit easy methods of detecting the fraudulent adulterations of food, and of other articles, classed either among the necessaries or luxuries of the table; and to put the unwary on their guard against the use of such commodities as are contaminated with substances deleterious to health.Every person is aware that bread, beer, wine, and other substances employed in domestic economy, are frequently met with in an adulterated state: and the late convictions of numerous individuals for counterfeiting and adulterating tea, coffee, bread, beer, pepper, and other articles of diet, are still fresh in the memory of the public.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Jaymi Elford Disclaimer: Alinka Rutkowska emailed me a copy of her book in exchange for this review.I typically dislike small eBooks because often they aren’t well written or formatted. Alinka Rutlowska’s book, How I Sold 80,000 Books, is an exception to my rule. This slim book takes only 30 minutes to read but it is jam-packed with useful information any author can apply to their publishing process. Rutkowska hooked me from the start when she reminds the reader that not everyone will have the same successes as she does because every author’s goals and definitions of success are different. She then goes on to explain how product (aka your book), place, price, and promotion create a cornerstone to reaching that individual success and how authors can use these four Ps to hit their target sales. What I liked: Rutkowska has great humor. Her bits on finding a proper editor made me giggle, mostly because I do a lot of editing for other authors myself. There were many times in this book where I found myself nodding along with the advice. It’s good stuff, and written in such a way that even if you “know it all” you’ll enjoy the refresher. This advice isn’t just for one platform (print or ebook), it’s directly applicable to both. Rutkowska also gives links to some very fun and informative videos on how to do some of the things her book talks about. What I didn’t like: There’s a link to a page on her site for a product called “Kindle Spy”. I immediately loaded the page in and discovered how heavily markety-sounding it was. When I tried to close the page, it triggered a pop-up window on my browser (which has pop-ups blocked). This makes me wonder what is under the hood of that app/page. Curiously there’s a section in the Promotions chapter called “Picture and Bio” but the only text under it is “see ‘Product.’”— why is this here if she wants readers to go back to the Product section. I’m left wondering how the picture and bio can be a promotional seller.BOTTOM LINE: If you are an author and want a good, quick read that provides you with tons of traditional, and not so traditional, ways to sell more copies of your book, then Alinka Rutkowska’s How I Sold 80,000 Books is for you.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Good, but with a few caveats.... By Steve Moore An author has to be a jack of many trades these days as well as a creative and skillful writer. Whether s/he is traditionally or self-published, these days it’s her/his time spent on PR and marketing even before the book is out. This guide lists a number of tips children’s book author Alinka Rutkowska has found useful toward that end, both before and after publication. She separates them into online and offline efforts. Some offline actions are traditional advice from the days when only pbooks (hardbounds, paperbacks, and trade paperbacks) were the only game in town. Ebooks have made the online tips more a la mode. I’ve tried or am trying most of them because they’ve all been around a while; they haven’t worked yet, so I’m dubious (caveat emptor for newbie writers reading this book). Maybe it’s just that my present and potential readers don’t read children’s books?I even saw some new tips that looked interesting, but alas, when I clicked on the link, I was offered an expensive video course that supposedly contains the secret codes. Even a free download of two hundred marketing tips requires you to register your email address. You can later opt out, but that whole dance annoys me. I never do that to my readers or reviewers—at most, I’ll use an email address to give a reviewer a free ebook in return for an honest review (I’m giving one here), or for other PR and marketing purposes (online sites for those often need one, or a PDF). My newsletter is online for everyone to see, not just for people on an exclusive email list. The author’s tone is generally optimistic here, although she never says she’s going to turn you into a NY Times bestselling author. To compensate, let me throw in some pessimism. There are many good books and authors out there. While, like most human endeavors, self-publishing follows Sturgeon’s rule (look it up), your marketing efforts more likely won’t matter. Publishing success is like winning the lottery. These tips might help, but you won’t find any silver bullet. For every selling eighty thousand books, you have hundreds of writers like me. I keep writing because it’s so much fun, and I love the thought that I can entertain a few readers. If your motivation is just to make money, your chances are slim nowadays.Bottom line: there are similar guides or self-help books on the same topic that contain most of this material, and they don’t make you jump through so many hoops for the tips. This author and I just have different perspectives on what indie publishing is all about. It’s nice to see many of these old tips summarized in one place and in an organized fashion, though, hence my rating. I’m sure this review will be lost among others from adoring fans (the author actually speaks to that phenomenon). She asked me for an honest review—I gave it.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A lot of good advice in a short, entertaining book By Whistlers Mom It's always a pleasant surprise to find an ebook that delivers what it promises and I think this one does.I'm not a writer, but I read a lot of books and most of them are by indie authors. Many self-published authors are writing about a personal experience or a difficulty which they have faced. Most of them are writing simply with the idea of helping others. If one person reads their book and is helped or comforted, they consider it worth the effort. If you fall into this category, you don't need to worry about marketing. Just finish the book, get it edited, and send it on its way.But there are many others who want to make a living (or at least, supplement their income) by writing. If you fall into that group, you need a big dose of reality and this lady can give it to you. Writing is and always has been and always will be a hard way to make money. Epublishing has made it easier to publish a book, but not to sell it. And many new authors are shocked and horrified to learn that writing the book is the EASY part!In particular, I appreciate her common-sense comments on the costs of marketing and the profits you can expect to earn, even with a moderately successful book. As this author points out, most ebooks are priced below $10 and those by unknown authors are usually 99 cents to $2.99. This is harsh reality. A successful writer is usually one who has made use of a wide variety of sales methods and venues. And that takes work and costs money.I'm impressed by her intelligent approach to getting those good reviews that are so important to sell a book. Again, there's no easy way, but her suggestion to comb reviewer profiles and contact those who list an email is right on the money. As she says, an email from the author telling about a special promotion and asking the reviewer to download and read and review the book WORKS. Some authors who have compiled an email list of reviewers can count on reviews every time they publish a new book. Of course, they are excellent writers as well as shrewd marketers. She includes lots of web-sites related to every possible aspect of writing and editing and marketing and tells which have worked for her. And she's funny, so it's a great read, even if it wasn't so valuable. What works for one person won't necessarily work for another, but it's stupid to make your own (costly) mistakes when you can learn from others. This author isn't just blowing smoke. She knows what she's talking about. If you want to be a writer, you should pay attention.

The welcome return of Leonid McGill, Walter Mosley's NYC-based private eye, his East Coast foil to his immortal L.A.-based detective Easy Rawlins. As the Boston Globe raved, "A poignantly real character, [McGill is] not only the newest of the great fictional detectives, but also an incisive and insightful commentator on the American scene."       In the fifth Leonid McGill novel, Leonid finds himself in an unusual pickle of trying to balance his cases with his chaotic personal life. Leonid's father is still out there somewhere, and his wife is in an uptown sanitarium trying to recover from the deep depression that led to her attempted suicide in the previous novel. His wife's condition has put a damper on his affair with Aura Ullman, his girlfriend. And his son, Twill, has been spending a lot of time out of the office with his own case, helping a young thief named Fortune and his girlfriend, Liza.     Meanwhile, Leonid is approached by an unemployed office manager named Hiram Stent to track down the whereabouts of his cousin, Celia, who is about to inherit millions of dollars from her father's side of the family. Leonid declines the case, but after his office is broken into and Hiram is found dead, he gets reeled into the underbelly of Celia's wealthy old-money family. It's up to Leonid to save who he can and incriminate the guilty; all while helping his son finish his own investigation; locating his own father; reconciling (whatever that means) with his wife and girlfriend; and attending the wedding of Gordo, his oldest friend.

Review Praise for Walter Mosley and And Sometimes I Wonder About You:“Exhilarating. . . . Vivid characters and bracing, rat-a-tat prose.” —The Seattle Times“Why the devotion? To begin with, McGill is one of the most humane (and likable) P.I.s in the business. . . . With Mosley, there’s always the surprise factor—a cutting image or a bracing line of dialogue.” —The New York Times Book Review“Like the city he works in, and the Mosley books he inhabits, Leonid McGill is complicated, savvy, and full of surprises: a would-be champ who can’t win for losing, a fighter who can never be counted out.” —The Wall Street Journal “The crime novels of Walter Mosley are first and foremost crackling good stories, full of mystery, suspense, and prose like good soul food: hearty, stick-to-your-ribs sentences with a spicy aftertaste.” —The Washington Post “If you didn’t know any better, you’d think it was Mosley, not McGill, who’s the former boxer—the way he bobs and weaves from chapter to chapter, sidestepping deadly blows and delivering his own devastating combinations. . . . There’s no one who can touch him.” —The Toledo Blade “Outstanding. . . . Mosley’s sharp ear for dialogue and talent for sketching memorable characters are much in evidence in this installment, further deepening his complex lead.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)   “Delivered with Mosley’s celebrated poetic style and genius for wrapping fascinating, quirky characters in complex cons. . . . [This] series deserves serious attention from all fans of mainstream hard-boiled detective fiction.” —Booklist (starred review)“When it comes to great books, here’s an easy rule of thumb: Never miss Mosley. . . . Leonid McGill should be appreciated.” —BookPage “No-one alive writes like Mosley. He is a multi-talented man of letters, but is unique in that he weaves poetry into every page. . . . This is Mosley at his best, with not one word wasted, and a story which will leave you with much to think about.” —Crime Fiction Lover

It was cool that fall and he would have done well with a heavier fabric, but maybe that was just the octogenarian’s style—or maybe his only suit. He was napping, talking in his sleep. The unintelligible words came from his lips like a sporadic spoken-word song in another language. Maybe it was a foreign tongue.   Six rows back, I knew, sat a behemoth of a man wearing black-jean overalls and a heavy, long-sleeved blue-and-white-checkered work shirt. From a thick steel chain around the big man’s neck depended a real horseshoe that had never been attached to any hoof. The man was in his forties, over four hundred pounds, with red hair and the raspberry and cream–colored skin of a Norseman. His regular breathing, when you got within two rows, was loud enough to hear over the clacking of metal wheels on metal tracks.   At the front of the car, in a seat facing backward, there perched a small black woman who was somewhere around my age, clutching a red, yellow, and green calico carpetbag by its worn brown leather handle. The fifty-something lady looked worried but thisseemed like a regular state of affairs—not any specific problem that plagued her at that point in time.   Specific problems have always been my stock-in-trade. As a young man I delivered this unwanted commodity; nowadays I remove it—for a price.   A woman came through the semiautomatic door behind the worried grandmother. This potential new resident of our low-occupancy car was harder to define.   She was beautiful. Her bright skin was the russet brown I associated with the Caribbean, her hair was untreated and a little wild, and her eyes a color somewhere between brown and bronze. I noticed her eyes because this was the third time she’d gone pastgazing at me, considering, and then rejecting whatever thought it was that those eyes harbored. Past thirty but nowhere near the next decade, she’d still be lovely when she reached the age of the sleeping man who muttered across the aisle.   I wondered what she might have asked if I had met her expectations. This thought caused me to look around just in time to see her stop at the behemoth’s row. She asked a question and he grumbled something. She asked something else and he shook his headvehemently, gestured with his left hand, and then turned away—which was no mean feat for a man his size.   She nodded at him, almost a bow, and made her way to the end of the car. There she punched the chrome plate that engaged the sliding door.   The passing thought that it might have been nice to hear her question firsthand was soon displaced by the certainty that whatever she said would not have improved my life. In my experience beautiful strangers rarely give as much as they take and they almostalways ask for more.   After she was gone I pulled out my cell phone and entered the characters M‑A‑R, then touched a button that had the image of an upright receiver emblazed upon it. The phone rang once and she answered.   “McGill and Son detective agency.”   I had never asked her to answer the phone like that but Mardi had her own aesthetic and she had become, in just a few years, an indispensable part of my office.   “Hey, Mardi.” “Mr. McGill. How are you?” Her voice was soft like a satin finish on polished steel.   “Just fine. I get anything on my New York Literary Review ad?”   “No, sir. I checked just this noon.” I didn’t expect an answer. William Williams was in the wind. It was no great loss; like the dollar bet on a hundred-million-dollar Lotto—you were bound to lose but you had to play.  "A man named Hiram Stent called asking for an appointment anytime today,” Mardi murmured.“What’s his problem?”   “He didn’t say but it sounded pretty, I don’t know . . . urgent.”   “I’m not coming in today,” I said. “I’m going straight to the sanatorium from the station. Give him a morning slot, first thing.”“Yes, sir. Are you finished with the Martinez case?” “Yeah.” “Did it turn out okay?”   “He ran once,” I said. “Who’s to say he won’t do it again? Twill in?”   “No,” she said but her tone said more.   “Where is he?”   “He didn’t call in today. I think he’s probably at home studying the tapes you had me give him.”   There was something off in Mardi’s voice, something that had to do with my favorite son. I would have asked about it but just at that moment I felt a presence at my side. Looking up, I saw the brilliant vision of the beautiful woman who flitted aroundour car like a hesitant butterfly over a sticky flower. Her dress was a shade deeper than coral, and though it wasn’t tight it expressed her figure just fine. “I’ll have to call you back, M, something just came up here.”   “On the train?” “No problem,” I said, “just somebody wanting a section of my paper.”   “See you tomorrow,” she said, and I broke the connection. “Hello,” I greeted while putting the phone in the breast pocket of my all-purpose blue suit.   “I didn’t mean to interrupt you,” she said. Her voice was somewhere in the lower register of gold. Her black satin purse was cinched at the top like a miniature burlap potato sack.   “No problem. I was just calling in to the office.”   “Oh.” She glanced at the door behind her. “Um . . . can I sit next to you?” I was on the aisle so she was asking for a window seat—with a buffer.   “Is that what you asked Haystack Calhoun back there?”   She didn’t get the cultural reference but still understood the joke. Smiling and frowning at the same time, she said, “I think he’s afraid of girls.”   “Good for him. Some men never learn that lesson.”   “Have you?” the nameless beauty asked.   If I believed in angels they wouldn’t be the sweet beneficent kind with fluffy wings and halos but rather haughty, removed Valkyries that tore the soul from your dying breast. That kind of angel would have asked the question she put to me. And, I knew,I should have answered like the colossus with the horseshoe necklace.   “My name’s Leonid,” I said, “Leonid McGill.”   “May I sit on the other side of you, Mr. McGill?” she asked.   If I wanted her name I was going to have to work for it.   I grabbed my brown rucksack from the empty seat next to me and then stood making a gesture with my left hand, the same and yet the opposite of the behemoth. She smiled and brushed past me. At that proximity I got a whiff of something both acrid and sweet, like some ancient forests I’d been in. It was a mild scent that caused a strong reaction in a section of my heart that had almost been forgotten.   When she was installed there next to me I knew that the next week or so would be trouble. I smiled and laughed a little. She nodded and then grinned.

By Miss Barbara I’ve heard of authors being referred to as wordsmiths; if this is true then Walter Mosley is certainly a wordgod. In his latest crime drama featuring Leonid McGill we find the rough edged Private Investigator up to his ears in characters that the author somehow manages to keep straight for us readers. There is his wife, who has recently attempted suicide and is in a sanitarium; his sometimes lover; his new paramour that he met on a train and is being pursued by her fiancé-hired thugs. We have McGill's missing son; the son’s school friend who is working as McGill’s receptionist; McGill’s father, a radical socialist, who was assumed dead (until he turns up), his brother who is serving a long term in the pen (until he is not) and numerous sundry characters who are integral or negligible to the plot. Mosley makes sure that even his minor characters are colorfully significant. The basic story line is that McGill is asked to help an ill-fated man named Hiram Stent track down a distant relative. He has been offered a sizable reward if he can locate her. Hiram, in turn, wants to hire McGill for a percentage. McGill refuses and sends the man on his way. Soon after, McGill’s office is blasted into and Hiram is stabbed to death. Now solving the missing person mystery becomes a guilt induced necessity. It’s McGill’s job in this book to hold all of the loose ends together, solve the crimes, deal with cops who don’t like him and generally keep his love life untangled. This is all complicated yet easy and entertaining to read. Mosley has a way of describing people and situations that is as smooth as 20 year old Glenfiddich Scotch. When describing the stalker on the train Mosley calls him “slender and likely strong, he reminded me of an unsheathed hunting knife”. On depicting the voice of his father he said “This man’s tones were soft and palliative, like a doctor with bad news”.I must admit that I’m a fan of Walter Mosley and will fully acknowledge that this is not the very best of his books, but then a good book from Mosley far outshines the bulk of all else out there. I give it 4.5 stars but will round up.

The fifth Leonid McGill novel By TChris Walter Mosley has a unique ability to see the uncommon in common people, to perceive the humanity to which inhuman circumstances give birth. His characters are damaged and betrayed. They have been abused and they have been abusive. They often live on the fringes of society, yet they retain their dignity, their wisdom, and their strength. They reinvent themselves every day because that's what life is -- a process of reinvention. Few writers convey that as well as Mosley. When a beautiful woman walks into Leonid McGill's life (or, at any rate, sits next to him on the train), he knows he is in for trouble. Five minutes later, Marella Herzog owes him $1,500, his fee for protecting her from an attacker who was supposedly sent by her former fiancé. Throughout And Sometimes I Wonder About You, McGill ruminates about the powerful women who dominate his life, including the wife who is receiving convalescent care, the dissatisfied part-time lover, the secretary who is finding ways to recover from a horrific childhood, and now Marella. Also playing a vital role in the story is McGill's son Twill, who has taken on a private investigation of his own. Of course, his activities cause problems for McGill. And then there's Hiram Stent, a vagrant whose case McGill turns down until, inevitably, his sense of justice compels him to look into Hiram's problem by finding a missing woman. In the time-honored tradition of PI fiction, McGill is soon working for free, because helping those in need is the right thing to do. Before the end of the novel, McGill's sense of justice has made him the target of three groups of people who want to kill him. In other words, a typical day in McGill's life. The family element -- not just with Twill, but also with McGill's absent father, whose absence ends in this novel -- is just as strong as the larger plot threads. As he so often does with consummate skill, Mosley weaves it all together to create a tight, fast-moving story that works as a thriller, as a family drama, as an unconventional love story, and as a psychological portrait of a man who is struggling to come to terms with his past and to invent a better future.

Bachmann Fans of Walter Mosley will welcome “And Sometimes I Wonder About You”. It’s a first rate addition to a marvelous body of work. Admirers know all about "following in the tradition of" Hammett and Chandler and Cain. What I found most interesting was ‘Sometimes I Wonder’, more than any previous work, seems to embrace these comparisons rather than trying to keep them at arms length. You almost expect references to “dames with legs that go all the way to China” or protests about “of all the gin joints in the world…”We start off with a seeming riff on the Maltese Falcon. A russet brown beauty named Marella Herzog gets the Mary Astor part and hero Leonid McGill playing Bogie. Of course she’s being followed and afraid, and falls for the PI (or is it a con?)—no, she isn’t straight with him. It’s nicely done—a wink and nod to the genre and a story line all its own that starts things off at a good clip. Scenes in the boxing gym with the haggard but good hearted trainer and buying info from ex-cons seemed more cliché than homage, but who am I to tell Walter Mosley how to write? What I found distracting was a dozen different sub plot/story lines/sad sacks crammed into less than 275 pages. Two cases, a depressed wife, mistress on the wire, troubled receptionist, in-trouble offspring, an Artful Dodger and socialite on the lam from a modern day Fagin, and absentee-now-returned-revolutionary dad is a lot to track. And that’s just the McGill's immediate circle, not including the cops, snitches, hoods and hard luck stories that comprise the universe of the author's world.. Mosley is a great writer and does a masterful job of tying up lots, if not all loose ends. Personally I liked our hero more in earlier stories, when he was an anti-hero—if not exactly immoral certainly amoral. Apparently goodness comes upon us when we’re just too damn old and tired to be bad.According to the author’s blurb this is book 43. Only a crank would expect them all to be masterpieces. If ‘Sometimes I Wonder’ isn’t the author at his very best, Walter Mosley is always a great read. Enjoy.
