English-language history comes alive By laurenlibrarian Only the best english-language tourist guide book ever. : ) This reads like a BBC documentary of the history of the language--just enough information to be informative and entertaining, and not so much that you're overwhelmed with dull dry bits. Despite the humble warning in the introduction about the weather affecting the photos, I found the photography to be perfectly fine and often lovely. My only complaint is that my reading copy is a heavy hardcover, so I recommend anyone using it for an actual trip should invest in the Kindle edition. I hope to check out some of the sites in the near future.

A review elsewhere lead me to think that the photos were better and that there was more meat to the history of the language. It would be fine for a ramble around the UK but doesn't really cut it for an armchair traveler.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Are you traveling to England soon? By Paula As a retired English teacher, I hoped I'd like this. And I do, even if it's a bit expensive. It's really intended for those who want to actually travel . . . but armchair travel is fun, too. The New York Times says that the author, David Crystal, is "that rare academic linguist who can discuss language authoritatively without resorting to the polysyllabic jargon that often serves as a wall around that realm of scholarship." I'd have to agree. My only reservation is the price.

Excerpt from Manual of the Families and Genera of North American DipteraEight years ago the author of the present work published a small volume in which he attempted to tabulate the families and more important genera of the diptera of the United States. From the use that has been made of that work by entomological students, he has been encouraged to believe that the labor of its preparation was not in vain. The extraordinary activity in the investigation of our dipterological fauna within the past few years has, however, largely destroyed its usefulness, and it is hoped that this new edition, or rather this new work, will prove as serviceable as has been the former one. In the present work there has been an attempt to include all the genera now known from north of South America. While the Central and West Indian faunas are preëminently of the South American type, there are doubtless many forms occurring in the southern states that are at present known only from more southern regions.In the preparation of the work the author has been aided by the examination, so far as he was able, of extensive collections from the West Indies and Central America submitted to him for study by Dr. D. Though it says 35mm, the concepts are equally applicable to modern digital cameras, including the FX versions. Any photographer who has mastered camera settings should read this book and practice the concepts described to develop a great eye for the perfect photo. After all, even Photoshop cannot fix every compositional error in post processing. So get it right the first time - in the camera.

I am very much into Scandinavian thrillers and I particularly enjoy authors such as Arnaldur Indridason and Asa Larsson. I found that the story in Hidden Child is written with particular inclination for exploring "human stories" and going off on side subplots. That is fine but to my taste the ratio of murder investigation to the human stories was too low. You will enjoy this book if you want to read about a jaded old detective who finds affection both in a human and a canine companion, about a couple deeply in love and facing the birth of a child, about a detective on paternity leave who can't stay away from work, and about his wife who is a writer that decides to investigate the murder story on her own (it happens to involve her deceased distant mother). You get the idea. I did not like the story but you might.

Author Erica is now married to policeman Patrick. Since she writes true crime books, she inserts herself into his investigations. Because this is a small Swedish tourist town, with very little crime taking place, she can get away with this. What really intrigues her about this crime though is that it involves her late mother. When Erica discovers her mother's old diaries from the World War II years, she unwittingly sets in motion the unveiling of a past that others of her mother's generation in that town do not want unveiled.One of the very best characters in this book is one we were all set to despise in the first book, the police chief. This time he adopts a stray dog and begins taking salsa dance lessons. He just about steals the whole book this time around.This is a much stronger book than the first. This was the first of her books that I have read and I was sorely disappointed. She is a good writer, easy to read and the story moves along. She does a good job developing her characters so they seem to be real people not just cardboard cutouts as in many crime fiction novels. But unfortunately, the suspense was sorely lacking. And about halfway into this very long book, I got quite bored, by the last third I was annoyed.The book is basically too long. And Lackberg seems to think that the reader cannot remember the facts without regular recaps. In fact, she recaps just about every little detail numerous times. Maybe Swedish readers like really long books and so she felt the need to stretch. But I found it quite irritating and would have preferred to get to the conclusion at least 200 pages earlier.As for the resolutions to the crimes and questions, there were no surprises here. I am not generally good at figuring who did it. I don't really try, preferring to just enjoy the story. But here, it was all so obvious that it was very disappointing. I really wanted a great surprise ending as a payoff for all the time I had put in to get there.For those of you who like a real crime whodunnit, look elsewhere. Lackberg's books, and I use the plural because from what I have read this one is representative, are stories about people, around the plot of a crime, rather than real crime and mystery fiction. Although I didn't really expect Lackberg to be as good as Larsson I had hoped she would come a little bit closer. But not by a very long shot.

Indepth guide to 3D character modelling in Maya By Parka [[VIDEOID:210e9533777a566c83f85938d9258e9c]]Beginner's Guide to Character Creation in Maya is one of the more detailed and in depth book that covers 3D character modelling with Maya.The first thing you need to know is the book not only covers Maya, but also uses Mudbox for some of the modelling. The software used are Maya 2015 (Service Pack 2), Mudbox 2015, Photoshop CS6 and Nuke. You can probably still use software that are one or two versions older but the book does mention new features that are only available in the new software.Second thing to note is there are more than 30 hours of video files that accompany the lessons. The video files are huge, like 59GB. Unlike other books, 3Dtotal has opted to use Bittorrent for distributing the files this time and the download speed is rather slow. If there are no seeders, then technically speaking you can't even download the file. I would have imagined that there would be at least one seeder, like you know, from 3Dtotal themselves. They should have just split up the files to go with the chapters or even page numbers. Then readers would not have to download such big files at one go, or go through the wait for seeders to appear.Alright, about the book...The chapters are namely1. Pipeline and interface2. Anatomy, modeling and sculpting3. Texturing and shading in Maya and Mudbox4. Rigging and deformation in Maya5. Locomotion and animation in Maya6. Lighting and rendering in MayaThe book covers not only modelling but also helps you to understand the pipeline workflow. That's so that you can share your assets for others to work on while you continue to touch up your model.The book is written for beginners and covers only the tools you'll use for modelling. The tools would be those commonly used for polygon modelling. You can come in with absolutely no knowledge on Maya although it would definitely be less intimidating if you have already worked on Maya before. The Maya interface is covered in the first chapter.This book really goes into the details. There's a rather lengthy coverage on the muscles and bones in the anatomy chapter. Generally speaking, the book not only covers the technical aspects, but also wants you to understand the rationale behind. Like why do you model something this way? How do you mimic the way the human body moves in a believable manner. And before you can start to animate your walk cycle, animation concepts are presented.For texturing, there's a section that talks about the skin and how you can prepare reference images for use as texture files, e.g. how you should set up your photoshoot to capture accurately coloured photo reference.The last chapter talks about lighting and rendering.The author and instructor is Jahirul Amin is a 3D trainer at Double Negative, a visual effects/CGI company in London. That guy is a pro and you can tell by the content written and this thick 296-page book. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. There are numerous screenshots provided to show you what they are talking about.Overall, this is a rather comprehensive course, and a great book for beginners to 3D character modelling in Maya. There's so much content you'll probably have to spend a week or two to really complete all the lessons. And then there are those 30 hours of video files to sweeten the deal (provided you have no problems downloading them).(See more pictures of the book on my blog. I have only examined it because I do want to explore Maya character making. The book has everything you need to know about successfully creating animated figures of all types.

It didn’t take completion of the first chapter before I realized I’d hit a gold-mine in automotive literature. It represents some of the best value in overall content and packaging of any motorsports book I’ve read, and I’ve been collecting and reading books about sports car racing for over 40 years. There are scant few memoirs out there written by the men who turned the wrenches, and a number of these frankly have little of substance to say- not so with Henny’s book. With unparalleled access to the world of the great Carroll Shelby, Phil presents an engaging look at an incredible era in racing. To his credit, he doesn’t gloss over any aspect of what he saw, either within or outside of Shelby’s organization. His comments about drivers are particularly insightful. In many respects, this is as good if not better than the vast majority of driver memoirs or books by leading authors in the field (on par with Eoin Young, Anthony Pritchard, Dave Friedman, etc). Phil’s just-released companion work about the great Bob Bondurant should make a welcome addition to the Shelby story. I don’t mean it lightly when I say this is an absolute “must have” book if you’re remotely interested in sports car racing from the 1960s (follow the purchase of “Just Call Me Carroll” with Phil’s book on Bondurant if you wish a more complete picture of Bondurant’s contributions to Shelby’s successes against the might of Ferrari).

Beer-Topia Bathroom Reader By Loretta The Beer-Topia book from the Bathroom Readers' Institute is a pure delight to read and own for those of us who enjoy trivia on Beer and the history surrounding beers. I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my husband. He began reading it on Christmas Day and is continuing to enjoy every page. He often shares with me the facts that he is learning. There was a TV commercial on a beer which we have seen for several years. In Beer-Topia there was a paragraph on the commercial PLUS the name of the actor in the commercial. We were delighted to finally have that one fact for our knowledge. We are so very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in trivia on beers or collectors of beer items. It is a great addition to our collection of Uncle John Bathroom Readers.

Useful tips common for all breeds of dogs By Victor I have always wanted a dog but the thought of having to train it means I never went ahead and got one. I read this book when I visited one of my friend's home who loves pets a lot. After reading this book, now I am very interested to have a puppy in my own home as I feel I learnt a lot and gained the confidence I needed to know I could handle it. The tips mentioned in the book are applicable to all breeds of dogs. The training methods will definitely shape the dog in a better way. It is not just about training the dog to fetch something. It has much more than that. If you read and follow the book, I am sure you will become a perfect dog trainer within weeks!

But after going through the book, I found I got more than I initially expected! The book has everything covered from A to Z about to have a perfect puppy. It talks about how to keep our home a perfect place for the pup, how often we need to train them, their food habits, their teething troubles, table manners and so on. Everything is explained in a simple manner so that the owners could understand and implement the tips much easier. This book is a must if you want your puppy to be smart and healthy!

Cyber weapons and cyber warfare have become one of the most dangerous innovations of recent years, and a significant threat to national security. Cyber weapons can imperil economic, political, and military systems by a single act, or by multifaceted orders of effect, with wide-ranging potential consequences. Unlike past forms of warfare circumscribed by centuries of just war tradition and Law of Armed Conflict prohibitions, cyber warfare occupies a particularly ambiguous status in the conventions of the laws of war. Furthermore, cyber attacks put immense pressure on conventional notions of sovereignty, and the moral and legal doctrines that were developed to regulate them. This book, written by an unrivalled set of experts, assists in proactively addressing the ethical and legal issues that surround cyber warfare by considering, first, whether the Laws of Armed Conflict apply to cyberspace just as they do to traditional warfare, and second, the ethical position of cyber warfare against the background of our generally recognized moral traditions in armed conflict.The book explores these moral and legal issues in three categories. First, it addresses foundational questions regarding cyber attacks. What are they and what does it mean to talk about a cyber war? The book presents alternative views concerning whether the laws of war should apply, or whether transnational criminal law or some other peacetime framework is more appropriate, or if there is a tipping point that enables the laws of war to be used. Secondly, it examines the key principles of jus in bello to determine how they might be applied to cyber-conflicts, in particular those of proportionality and necessity. It also investigates the distinction between civilian and combatant in this context, and studies the level of causation necessary to elicit a response, looking at the notion of a 'proximate cause'. Finally, it analyzes the specific operational realities implicated by particular regulatory regimes. Margaret T. Shannon is Professor Emeritus of Nursing at Our Lady of Holy Cross College, New Orleans, Louisiana. She holds a BS and an MS in Chemistry, both from Saint Louis University; an MA in Teaching Biology from Saint Mary’s University, a BS in Nursing from Northwestern State University of Louisiana, an MSN from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of New Orleans. Prior to entering nursing, she taught physical science, natural science, and mathematics at the secondary and collegiate levels.

Billie Ann Wilson is Professor Emerita in the School of Nursing at Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mol "Alternative Leadership Strategies in the Prehispanic Southwest" is a collection of papers that is clear in its outset, coherent in its structure, and that hits the mark in two important ways, making this an example of sound archaeological scholarship.Firstly, it critiques the way in which the political situation of the American Southwest has been portrayed and researched by archaeologists and then picks up on a number of theoretical concepts (including dual-processual theory, heterarchy, and complex-adaptive-system theory) by giving a clear explanation and implementing them in the regional discourse. Secondly, using these theories case-studies are presented in a number of papers, of which some present fresh and sophisticated accounts of alternative leadership strategies.All in all, this book can be considered to be one of the milestones in Southwestern archaeology, making it invaluable for a regional specialist of these Native American cultures and histories. Additionally, this collection of papers can be considered of value and a good read for those of the general archaeological public who like thinking out of the box, both regionally and theoretically.
