By William Cory Review by William Cory, Author: Maybe You Should Write A Magazine!: Complete Guide: How to Write, Lay Out, Publish and Profit from Regional Special-Interest MagazinesLike most books on magazine publishing, written as they are by people experienced in traditional magazine publishing, this one excellently describes the establishment of a publishing business, complete with editorial, graphics, advertising staffs or individuals. It is detailed and highly informative. My own publishing experience, not as involved with more frequent publications, has been in annual magazine-type publications for regional markets. I've always done the editorial and design parts of the process myself. An independent sales representative and web-offset printer (for production of glossy, full-color printing) have been my only associates. I've used my own Mac computers and off-the-shelf software (Adobe(tm) InDesign® and Photoshop®), and all work was done in a home office. Since starting out in 1990, I've never had a year that wasn't profitable.I provide that information only to demonstrate that I know something about print publishing, and to highlight the fact that for frequent publishing schedules and standard magazine distribution, the book being reviewed here is more than adequate--actually, excellent. If your dream is to publish a quarterly or more frequent publication, however, the book being reviewed here is an excellent guide. I have purchased and used this book myself to prepare for a semi-monthly statewide magazine I am currently working toward in Colorado. My new magazine project will require the detailed procedural information for publishing and distribution through regular "magazine rack" channels, and that information, along with a lot of other great info for frequent magazine publishing, is contained in this book. You won't regret buying it!

Lorraine give really good advice for those wanting to step by step look at what it really takes to start up in the publishing industry. She alleviates the new publisher from having to do all the research. It's all done for you. She even gives leading industry contacts for associations, printers, distributers , you name it. She even tell you how you deal with them.Again it's all done for you.She gives the do's and don'ts for media kits and website design:All which is really helpful when trying to draw revenue from every stream imaginable. She breaks down every aspect of the the industry to a T. That way you know what you're getting into before you jump in the water.I highly recommend this book to any new publisher, an existing publisher or one looking to learn to the industry before making a final decision.Lorraine's website is great too as she response to your questions with answers. For more information go to […]Buy this book :-) or you'll be sorry

A Fine addition, covers pretty much everything GET THE PRINT VERSION By Bobbi Schulz-Bragg You may see people gripe about books like these, saying the book doesn't cover this or that, or is too 'basic' or such. Truth is, there are SO many variables and unique situations you will encounter when starting any business, and magazine publishing is a weird animal. Ms. Phillips does a fine job putting her years of experience -- *her* experiences -- into a book that is a nice addition to a magazine start-up's go-to library. If you can, do GET THE PRINT EDITION. The Kindle e-book version renders and flows HORRIBLY, and the few diagrams and images are too small to see. Whoever did the conversion screwed this up royally -- Ms. Phillips deserves better.
