Excerpt from Diophantos of Alexandria: A Study in the History of Greek AlgebraIt would be mere tautology to enter into further details here. One remark, however, as to what the work does not, and does not profess to, include may not be out of place. No treatment of Diophantos could be complete without a thorough revision of the text. I have, however, only cursorily inspected one MS. of my author, that in the Bodleian Library, which unfortunately contains no more than a small part of the first of the six Books. The best MSS. are in Paris and Rome, and I regret that I have had as yet no opportunity of consulting them. Though this would be a serious drawback were I editing the text, no collation of MSS. could affect my exposition of Diophantos' methods, or the solutions of his problems, to any appreciable extent; and, further, it is more than doubtful, in view of the unsatisfactory results of the collation of three of the MSS. by three different scholars in the case of one, and that the most important, of the few obscure passages which need to be cleared up, whether the text in these places could ever be certainly settled.I should be ungrateful indeed if I did not gladly embrace this opportunity of acknowledging the encouragement which I have received from Mr J. W. L. Glaisher, Fellow and Tutor of Trinity College, to whose prospective interest in the work before it was begun, and unvarying kindness while it was proceeding, I can now thankfully look back as having been in a great degree the "moving cause" of the whole. And, finally, I wish to thank the Syndics of the University Press for their liberality in undertaking to publish the volume.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
