My name is Ploppie McCrapperson. I'm a normal poop, grew up in a good family. I’m 1/3 Corn and Peanut mixed, so sometimes I didn’t really fit in. School was especially tough because nobody likes you when they see you have some corn in you. Kid’s can be so cruel. But I rose above all that. I’ve had some close calls. Once I got most of my face licked off by a Golden Retriever and I had to wait until he pooped me out again to put myself back together. Another time this crazy death row inmate tried to paint himself with me, looking for an insanity plea. As you can guess, that didn’t go down too well with the guards. I had to collect myself in the sewer after 7 different guards were hosed off. What’s worse, they all smelled like cologne, can you imagine! As I matured I started becoming an adult and you might say I had been the ugly duckling that turned in to the swan. The ladies started looking at me a little differently and I could tell they liked what they were seeing. Not to brag, but I’m a good looking pile of feces. I always get mistaken for chocolate soft-serve ice cream. Me and my buddy used to go to McDonalds and hide in the ice cream cones just to mess with people. Don’t worry, three or four licks in we would let the cat out of the bag. We would say, “Your breath stinks!” and just die laughing. Just two crazy pieces of crap having fun. But life was definitely looking up for me. I worked my way through college at Assmore University. After that I studied Particle Toilet Physics at Harvard and got a degree in Business Law. But my real love was always coloring. Sure, I would leave a streak in a pair of underwear, or a smudge on a clean wall every now and then. People would say, “Ploppie, you’re so talented,” but I thought they were just being polite. I’m a pretty likable turd. My motto is, “I never met a butthole I didn’t like!” Anyway, a few years back I was working on a project for an oil company in Western Europe and I started coloring again. And what can I say . . . I was sucked back into the sphincter of life and crapped right out again with another chance. I decided that I was done with corporate life. That work didn’t let me express my true artistic nature. I wanted to let my true Peanut & Corn shine through. So here we are, with my new book. I hope you’ll join me on this crap-filled adventure! Let’s paint the town Brown! - You can call me “Ploppie.”

About the Author Max Hodges is an American living in Tokyo where he runs White Rabbit Express, a buying service for Japanese products.

By Benjamin Brannan The question every potential buyer is probably asking himself is, "Should I buy the White Rabbit or the Tuttle flash cards?" Well, my personal answer is: White Rabbit.The White Rabbit cards have a few things I favor over the Tuttle versions. First, the kana characters themselves are displayed in a large format. Also, four other 'fonts' are given which display the character (in a smaller size, too--some characters may look different to you when scaled down). These things are a HUGE advantage and would help you read big signs to newspaper print effectively. Tuttle cards have the character shown only once in a large size on the front and a smaller size on the back.Five vocabulary words are given for each kana with White Rabbit, versus four from Tuttle. This isn't a huge deal, but it adds up: With ROUGHLY 100 cards total, your gaining an extra ~100 vocabulary words with White Rabbit. However, White Rabbit provides vocabulary words which start with the given kana AND include the kana (somewhere) in the vocabulary. Tuttle provides only words which begin with the given kana. To me, this really doesn't matter.Stroke order is shown on both versions, but to me the White Rabbit version is a bit more 'clear.' This is probably also subject to opinion.White Rabbits BIGGEST help are the mnemonics. Okay, so if you read the introduction cards they admit that not all the mnemonics are great. They urge you to buy the accompanying audio lessons, but a quick search for "hiragana pronunciation" on any search engine will yield you audio clips of correct pronunciation. Youtube has some good results too. Point is: The visual mnemonics especially can be very helpful for any kana you have particular trouble in remembering. Yes, some of the mnemonics suck, but I challenge you to do better. Plus, if you need a mnemonic to remember every single kana, maybe Japanese isn't for you!Cons? I only have one: White Rabbit insists on numbering the cards on the kana side. For me, this is bad news! Some difficult to remember kanas can be remembered simply by their number. For example: to the novice, 'i' and 'ri' may look similar, but i is number 2 and ri is number 40. Me, ne, nu, wa, and re also have (superficially) similar symbols. My best advice if your subconscious likes to cheat is to cover the numbers with your thumb (they aren't really important).TIPS FOR LEARNING JAPANESE: Immerse yourself. Watch movies in Japanese with Japanese subtitles. Buy flash cards for kana AND kanji (especially kanji!). Buy a college level textbook. And whatever you do, don't just buy one textbook, buy multiple books that teach in different ways!

I like the clear pictures including the smaller ones of additional styles. The stroke order is written out very clearly. I like the sturdiness of the cards, themselves. I like the fact that they are laminated and have rounded corners making them more durable. The examples of vocabulary on each card are a great feature, also. They have been very helpful to use for practice for myself and my children.

It has quite a lot of information, and is very thorough. It first goes through synthetic antibiotics and antivirals, and then covers more natural ways to get these same benefits. • If you write in your journal like someone is going to read it, you will ever allow yourself to fully express what needs to be expressed. Write like no one will ever read it because it is likely no one ever will unless you want them to. I did find an example where the system worked in 2014. On August 21, 2014, 340 won. On the next day, August 22, 2014, 906 won. I actually searched the last seven years, and that was the best example that I saw. The book clearly defines how to use the system and anyone can understand how it is explained. To get the best performance from the system, you need to play multiple days, not just one.

About the Author Jeffrey A. Karson is Professor of Geology in the Department of Earth Sciences at Syracuse University and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. He investigates the interplay of magmatic construction and mechanical deformation of extensional and transform fault environments from ophiolites, contemporary oceanic crust, Iceland, continental rifts and continental margins. Professor Karson has participated in numerous field projects and seafloor research cruises worldwide. He is the author or co-author of over 150 publications on seafloor spreading and related phenomena.Deborah S. Kelley is a Professor in the School of Oceanography at the University of Washington and also Associate Director of Science for the first US underwater high-power, high-bandwidth cabled observatory, funded by the NSF. She is the former Chair of the UNOLS Deep Submergence Science Committee. Her research examines the linkages between submarine volcanoes, underwater hot springs and how they support life in the absence of sunlight. Dr Kelley has participated in over 35 blue water cruises routinely using robotic vehicles, and has been on over 50 Alvin deep-sea submersible dives, to depths as great as 4000 meters.Daniel J. Fornari is a marine geologist and Senior Scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). I've always been amazed by the adaptability of life! Who knew that such variety could live happily on a volcano? The bathymetry photos are gorgeous too. The book is also well-indexed; all topics are readily findable. Good job everyone! Well worth every penny.

This book explores the changing food culture of the urban American South during the Jim Crow era by examining how race, ethnicity, class, and gender contributed to the development and maintenance of racial segregation in public eating places. Focusing primarily on the 1900s to the 1960s, Angela Jill Cooley identifies the cultural differences between activists who saw public eating places like urban lunch counters as sites of political participation and believed access to such spaces a right of citizenship, and white supremacists who interpreted desegregation as a challenge to property rights and advocated local control over racial issues.

Significant legal changes occurred across this period as the federal government sided at first with the white supremacists but later supported the unprecedented progress of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which―among other things―required desegregation of the nation’s restaurants. Because the culture of white supremacy that contributed to racial segregation in public accommodations began in the white southern home, Cooley also explores domestic eating practices in nascent southern cities and reveals how the most private of activities―cooking and dining― became a cause for public concern from the meeting rooms of local women’s clubs to the halls of the U.S. Congress.

Review of To Live and Dine in Dixie By Jeneveve Angela Jill Cooley’s To Live and Dine in Dixie: The Evolution of Urban Food Culture in the Jim Crow South is an interdisciplinary examination of how culinary practices and food culture was reflective of, and affected by, the Jim Crow laws of segregation in the American South. The book is separated into three time periods: 1876-1935, 1936-1959, and 1960-1970. In each of these sections Cooley identifies the changes in Southern food culture, as well as the changes in law and society that worked to protect the South’s infamous feelings of white supremacy.Cooley argues that food was used to uphold the hierarchy of power in the South during these periods. She uses eye witness accounts, legal documents, and others’ thorough writings of this time to support her argument. This is where Cooley’s degrees in both law and history are invaluable. Cooley ties the legal and cultural aspects of this topic together skillfully.Cooley dives into the deeper meanings and metaphorical resonances of the events, cultural attitudes, and even the food itself. She identifies hypocrisies in this society and its culinary practices, such as “white Alabamians considered it acceptable to eat food that had been prepared by black hands but inappropriate to eat that same food sitting beside black diners” (pg. 4). She writes in an objective and academic manner that is thought-provoking and enjoyable to read.Ultimately, what Cooley conveys in this work is that food and the racial inequalities of the region are inextricably linked because of their prominence in the area’s historical culture. And Cooley does this with insightful examination and thorough investigation of laws and food practices of the American South during these volatile times. Count me in!I was fully engaged in this book's mix of tradition and transition between racial discrimination practices and consumer/preparer food adaptations. Coveted, protected recipes and skilled, practiced cooks were the name of the game, but its steps toward exclusivity, purity, and public policy were where it went totally wrong. Yet, again, the sheer amount of anthropology (and bibliography) that this book offers is amazing.
