However, I'm the type of person who will always try something before I bash it, and I'm glad i did. This book is so much fun!!!! I'm only about a quarter of the way through it and I am already dreading what it will be like when I finish. I think this is the only adult coloring book this author has so when I'm done I will have to find another. It's nice to have something that takes your mind off the worries of the day and this does that very thing. Very happy with my purchase.

There has been too many times when I would buy a book, run through the first couple of lessons then put it down never to return to it. This one has me coming back to it again and again.First off, I was surprised by how thick it is. This isn't one of those brochure type books. It has so much information in it and is formatted with care to keep you from feeling overwhelmed.Lessons and exercises perfectly presented with just enough video material to help along those who learn best by seeing/hearing.This one will keep me busy for some time to come.

I had expected, though, a more comprehensive treatment of technique and historic resources for my purposes. I had not expected so many songs of repertoire, because I am an advanced player and have made over 300 widely-ranging mandolin orchestrations for our group performance in the last five years. I enjoy the creativity that making arrangements affords. Nevertheless, I am glad to have the book, and have recommended it already for someone who could use its materials. The advice and the links to web demonstrations should prove helpful especially to those who aspire to play in a group or orchestral environment. And, of course, at any time when one plays this magical instrument, even alone, you become a winner. This book could keep you going with satisfaction for a very long time.

Its well written and clear and provides a wealth of useful information, along with mandolin compositions and arrangements and a practice method. Very cool!

Unleash the power of Knockout.js to build complex ASP.NET web applications

About This Book

  • Create complex cross-browser web applications the easy way
  • Separate UI code from business logic with the Model View ViewModel () pattern
  • Build a powerful client-side application step by step with Knockout MVC

Who This Book Is For

This book is intended for .NET developers who want to use the design pattern to create powerful client-side JavaScript linked to server-side C# logic. Basic experience with ASP.NET, Razor, and creating web applications is needed.

What You Will Learn

  • Work with observable arrays, special bindings, and computed observables
  • Create a model in C# and connect it with the MVVM structure in JavaScript
  • Integrate the Knockout.js library into ASP.NET applications
  • Configure tmux and customize it for your needs
  • Migrate your entire business logic to the server side with Knockout MVC
  • Understand and use basic MVVM concepts such as declarative bindings and observable properties
  • Discover special Knockout.js concepts such as regions, complex bindings, combined contexts, and more
  • Leverage the key features of Knockout.js such as declarative bindings, templating, and dependency tracking in ASP.NET applications

In Detail

Knockout MVC is a library for ASP.NET MVC that helps developers to move their entire business logic to the server.

With practical and accessible guidance, you will learn the skills necessary to successfully create Knockout.js-based applications of varying complexity.

Beginning with a vital overview of Knockout.js, including the MVVM design pattern, you will create a simple but powerful application capable of integrating with ASP.NET MVC as well as gain a thorough understanding of the Knockout MVC library. From this starting point, you will explore great advanced features that can be used in pure Knockout.js applications and server ASP.NET MVC logic, such as regions and complex bindings, as well as how to use the MVMM design pattern to create powerful sites separating the model, logic, and view layers.

First and foremost, it makes sense to create a book that discusses the collaboration of .NET with Knockout. It has been a very poorly-kept secret that there is a relationship between these two technologies, owing in large part to the fact that Knockout was a personal project of a Microsoft employee. So I am happy that this book exists among the fairly small number of Knockout books. As for the format of the book, I enjoyed it. It begins with a deep dive into the features of Knockout, and this is needed. While I have always applauded the interactive tutorial on Knockout's site, anyone going through it would be forgiven for thinking that Knockout is a fairly simple data binding library and nothing more. But Knockout is much more than that, and a read of the first chapter is a roll call of what Knockout can do for you and how those features fit together. The next chapter brings .NET into the fold and begins a tutorial to create a Knockout/ASP.NET MVC application. About the only negative I could say here is that the author uses the Basic template from the batch of Visual Studio 2012 templates, thus using MVC 4 instead of 5. However, everything should still be applicable, and it was probably just a choice based on the Basic template being removed from MVC 5. The next chapter is another tutorial-styled section that introduces something I did not even know existed before seeing this book: Knockout MVC. This goes back to the relationship between .NET and Knockout that I mentioned before. Knockout MVC is a separate library for combining ASP.NET MVC with Knockout (technically a .NET wrapper for Knockout) which moves the data binding into the .NET side. You could write a fairly sophisticated Knockout app without a single line of Javascript. If you are writing a fairly by-the-numbers Knockout app, this could save a ton of time by leveraging your business logic on the server, but for the most part I don't think I will be using it. It was an interesting read, however. The final two proper chapters are essentially reference sections on "Advanced Features" of both Knockout and Knockout MVC (with a reference on KO MVC following those). Some may complain about the book falling out of the tutorial style for the final two chapters, but it does offer a nice laundry list of features while still keeping the page count low.And that is an important thing to me and probably to others as well. One of the reasons I got this book was because of the specific subject matter and because of its length. I have found I just can't read a 500+ page book about a Javascript SPA framework. Rather, I would like to have a book that I can read in 2 days at the most and immediately become productive with. This is such a book, and Packt has, for me at least, become the publisher specializing in such books.I highly recommend this book for any ASP.NET MVC developer who may have just been using some jQuery for the client-side who has interest in *quickly* picking-up a JS SPA framework.

In this chapter, the author created an MVC example that used Knockout and the I/O calls to load data into the page were performed through JavaScript/AJAX calls made against Web API controllers in the project. I'm comfortable with heavy duty JavaScript more than I am MVC syntax so this was a plus. The author didn't do like everyone else and populate the page with data from the view model passed into the view through the controller - instead he used jQuery Ajax calls to perform I/O. I liked the author didn't fluff the book with 20-or more pages with orientations on EF and or how to setup code-first repositories. The author focused on how the code should be architected to use MVC with Knockout. As a .NET Web Developer, I needed to choose between using Knockout or AngularJS to reduce code that I previously wrote to maintain state back to the server. I chose Knockout because our biggest customers are on IE8 and Knockout supports IE6 and above. The code example carried throughout the book was a simple home library inventory - I liked that better than an overly complex one like an online store. For me, this book was a good place to start learning Knockout.

Overall a book recommended for those learning Knockout By J I was immediately interested in this book as I have used Asp.Net Ajax since its creation and for quite a while have been looking to seriously move to MVC. The first two chapters covered the Knockout basics very well including highlighting and explaining types of Observables. Chapter 3 had plenty of description although at the end of the chapter I didn’t fully understand all aspects of the view scripts.Moving on to chapter 4 and Asp.Net Knockout MVC it became really interesting as I use server side Ajax and there was a clear description of when Knockout MVC should be used and when not to use. In this chapter the Observables disappeared as handled on the server side but it would have been helpful for a fuller description considering their importance. Other than that, the topic was comprehensive. All the above chapters (1 to 4) had code to download which is always appreciated as it allows concentrating on learning and not typing - and eliminating typing errors.Chapter 5 moved on to advanced features in Knockout .js whilst chapter 6 was advanced features in Knockout.MVC. Both were handled well and covered topics I was unaware but would have been much improved if there had been code downloads. And finally the last section of the book forms a Knockout reference.Overall a book recommended for those learning Knockout, especially from an Asp.Net background. The only real criticism was the lack of code download for two chapters.

Roach If you want to read beautiful prose about hunting wasps, and a most interesting argument against evolution, all at no cost - this is the book for you. Today books about entomological subjects are seldom free and often too challenging because of their arcane, but accurate, vocabulary. Today's serious texts use scientific terms which require a specialized dictionary. Such dictionaries are also available as Kindle books at no cost. Unless you are a serious student of entomology, stick to the likes of Fabre! In his day, Jean-Henri Fabre was a superb entomologist. Still, his descriptions of the hunting wasp's escapades would probably be laughed at in any serious "scientific" level course in entomology taken in today's colleges, not because they are wrong, but are not written in scientific jargon.I'm sure the "creationists", a group which I hold intellectually in very low esteem, will love Chapter 8 of this book where Fabre demolishes the claims of evolutionists in his inimitable lyrical prose. He probably should have stuck to the behavior of hunting wasps, but who cares. In his time evolution was as laughable to many serious scientists as creationism is today. For the arm chair nature lover, this book is an unbeatable treat.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. More Hunting Wasps by Jean-Henri Fabre By Coach of Alva I read in part because I like horror stories and, as I knew from John Crompton's book, few creatures are more horrific than the hunting wasps. These monsters paralyze their victims by paralyzing them with a sting, then burying them alive with their eggs attached. When their eggs hatch, the larvae eat them alive, taking care to leave the most vital areas to the last. This isn't due to sadism. Fabre, in one of his many experiments, learned that the larvae must eat their prey alive or fresh, for they are poisoned by any flesh that has even slightly rotted. He also learned that the larvae could eat different kinds of prey. Their mothers, however, couldn't paralyze different kinds of prey. They were programmed to attack the vital nerve in their prey that would paralyze but not kill it. I lost track of species and other classifications so I'm not sure of the exact taxonomic relationships between huntress and prey. I do know that Fabre tried to fool them by showing an insect that looked like it belonged in in their usual class of prey, but didn't, and by showing them an insect that was in their usual class of prey, but didn't look like it. He failed. The wasps could always identify the insect with the nerve.Fabre didn't believe in insect intelligence, if intelligence meant the ability to learn something new. He tried to have them change their routines in many experiments and claimed that he always failed. Typical is his description of the Tachytes, which he tried to persuade to alter her routine in storing locusts. When she persisted in doing the same thing over and over, he dismissed her as which he described as "a narrow conservative, learning nothing and forgetting nothing." Do not ... confound reason with intelligence ... I deny the one, and the other is incontestable, within very modest limits." He pointed out that another wasp failed to solve a problem he had set for it, not only because it couldn't reason the problem back to its cause, but because it had no idea that there was a cause. What insects had was what he praised as "the incomprehensible wisdom of instinct," "instinct, a gratuitous attribute, an unconscious aspiration, rivals knowledge, that most costly acquisition." showing in such matters as their knowledge of their prey's inner anatomy, said knowledge being the precise location of the nerve centers that they needed to strike to paralyze or kill their prey, anatomy that left them vulnerable to their unchanging and unchangeable method of attack. "The outer structure of the victims operated on counted for nothing in the method of operating. This is determined by the inner anatomy." "Modify the conditions ever so slightly; and these skillful paralyzers are at an utter loss." Their ability to sense said inner anatomy could be detected in related species that bore very little resemblance to each other and prevented from attacking insects that looked at their usual prey on the outside but were different where it mattered on the inside. He opposed Darwin and the natural selection theory of evolution because of his observations of instinct. "This science is unconscious of itself has not been acquired, by her and her race, through experiments perfected from age to age and habits transmitted from one generation to the next ... it is absolutely impossible to experiment and to learn an art when you are lost if you do not succeed at the first attempt." How did he explain it? After these statements, he gave the credit to "the universal knowledge in which all things move and have their being!" If that sounds vague and gooey, and it did to me, he made more frequently an argument that made more sense. He and other scientists could accumulate facts but they couldn't answer the great questions with them. "... if we go to the bottom of things, we know nothing about anything ... To know how to know nothing might well be the last word of wisdom." He in short distrusted theorists and theories and despised armchair biologists who questioned his results without having observed the insects themselves. "First use your eyes and then you shall leave to argue!"Darwin apparently believed that animals had intelligence; Fabre believed that his experiments had proven that they did not. "If the one has learned by prolonged practice in attack, the other should also have learnt by prolonged practice in defense, for attack and defense possess a like merit in the fight for life." How could a bee-hunting wasp, via natural selection, learned how to attack a bee while the bee never learned how to defend itself? "... the one knows without having learnt, the other does not know because she is incapable of learning." He was also impressed with how the behavioral patterns of cocoon building varied with each insect. He noted that two different species, confronted with the same building materials, would build very different cocoons. "The workshop, the work, the provisions have not determined the instinct. The instinct comes first; it lays down laws instead of being subject to them."

Best Ebook Online Life Histories of North American Nuthatches, Wrens, Thrashers and Their Allies: Order Passeriformes (Classic Reprint), by Arthur Cleveland Bent

Excerpt from Life Histories of North American Nuthatches, Wrens, Thrashers and Their Allies: Order PasseriformesThis is the sixteenth in a series of bulletins of the United States National Museum on the life histories of North American birds. The same general plan has been followed, as explained in previous bulletins, and the same sources of information have been utilized. The nomenclature of the 1931 Check-list of the American Ornithologists' Union and supplements has been followed. An attempt has been made to give as full a life history as possible of the best-known subspecies of each species and to avoid duplication by writing briefly of the others and giving only the characters of the subspecies, its range, and any habits peculiar to it. In many cases certain habits, probably common to the species as a whole, have been recorded for only one subspecies. Such habits are mentioned under the subspecies on which the observations were made. The distribution gives the range of the species as a whole, with only rough outlines of the ranges of the subspecies, which in many cases cannot be accurately defined. The egg dates are the condensed results of a mass of records taken from the data in a large number of the best egg collections in the country, as well as from contributed field notes and from a few published sources.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. nuts about nuthatches By ealovitt One of the pleasant mysteries that must be solved upon moving to a new geographical area is the identities of the local and migrant birds. Some like bald eagles and cardinals are a no-brainer. But what about all of those indeterminate grayish-brownish-whitish birds that may only be identifiable by their habits? This is where a book like "Life Histories of North American Nuthatches, Wrens, Thrashers, and Their Allies" proves to be useful. It contains 142 black-and-white photographs of birds performing activities such as feeding and incubating, and in the case of the white-breasted nuthatch, creeping head-first down a tree-trunk---not just sitting on a branch and looking mysterious.By no means are the photographs the highlight of this volume. Arthur Cleveland Bent was one of America's foremost ornithologists, and his twenty-volume series on North American birds was originally published under the sponsorship of the Smithsonian Institution. In this particular volume he and his correspondents have compiled specific observations on about 104 different birds, including various nuthatches, creepers, wren-tits, dippers, wrens, mockingbirds and thrashers. Bent also utilizes the writings of America's great naturalists of the past, including Audubon, Burroughs, and Brewster. This Dover edition is an unabridged, unaltered republication of the original 1948 edition. Its anecdotal style is very readable, even charming. The copious details of avian nesting habits, courtship patterns, plumage and field markings, food, songs, and flight habits are made interesting by the dedication and enthusiasm of the hundreds of observers who contributed to this book.In it, I finally learned why one of my favorite birds, the white-breasted nuthatch moves head-first down tree trunks. Francis H. Allen (1912) points out an advantage in this procedure, saying: "I suspect that by approaching his prey from above he detects insects...which would be hidden from another point of view." The woodpeckers and the creepers can take care of the rest by moving up the trunk.By all means, begin your bird-watching career with some of the good field guides such as "Eastern Birds" by Roger Tory Peterson. When you are ready to delve more deeply into the natural history of your local birds, I strongly recommend these volumes by Arthur Cleveland Bent.

The monograph devoted to the early versions of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the most famous WW2 German fighter, discusses its origins and development with coverage of changes made in its first prototypes, A-D variants and their sub-variants. The combat use of the aircraft in the Spanish Civil War, Polish campaign and Phony War is thoroughly described with many first-hand accounts included. The book also features short chapters on Bf 109 Ds in Swiss service and camouflage and markings of early Bf 109s.REVIEWS This is an excellent combination of history, archive photos and modern computer generated imagery that I find a really delightful mixture and a pleasure to read through as well as having some first class modeling references at hand on the bookshelf, all in the one bookMilitary Modeling‘As always with Kagero's titles, the layout, artwork and texts is first rate, with plenty to recommend it. The photos are of great interest from a historical point of view, with many showing maintenance situations, and more candid photos of aircrew and ground crew, as well as the test pilots and technicians. A very thorough book at a reasonable price, and I'm looking forward to seeing the next volume. Very highly recommended.’ Brit Modeler.com

By Paul S To be fair, this is a not a version of the 109 that is well-documented, with restored examples sitting in museums just begging for a nice walkaround. That said, I received a rather thick book with eager anticipation, only to discover that about half the book is pictures of a "virtual" 109 model in various states of disassembly. I love pictures of actual airframes, but pictures of someone else's interpretation (which is exactly what a 3D model is) of an airplane fail to excite me, especially when I can pick out areas that, let's just say I interpret or "see" differently. A lot of the recent books from Kagero on aviation subjects has chosen to go this route, and I can't say that I'm pleased with this. It certainly makes their books less valuable in my eyes. And yes, it is very clearly labelled "in 3D", I'm just saying that a little 3D goes a long way. That said, there is still some nice coverage, with a blend of pictures, information, line drawings (which look fairly accurate to my eye) and profiles. The 3D stuff isn't actually that bad, though an airframe in various stages of disassembly would be much preferred (and I do believe such an airframe exists, though I cannot testify to it's completeness.)But with all that, I have added this volume to my library as a valuable resource for my research......

Physically the book is an 11-3/4" x 8-1/4" laminated hard cover with 192 pages. Kagero is very aggressive about repackaging the same material in multiple formats. So aggressive are they that it is often hard not to conclude that they are consciously trying to "double dip", that is to get the consumer to buy the same material multiple times. Kagero recently (2011) published "Messerschmitt Bf 109 A-D" by the same author in their card cover "Monographs" series so the cynical reader might wonder if the present volume is merely repackaging with minimal new material.I am happy to report that the present volume offers considerable value even if one already owns the previous one. Everything in the previous volume is present in this one with the exception of the cover art. The various photos are reproduced at a smaller size in the present book so that the text portion of the book can be squeezed into 2 fewer pages. The 22 pages of line drawings at 1/48th scale are supplemented by another page of detail drawings and seven pages of 1/72nd scale drawings. There are five pages (including rear cover) of color profiles in the original. The present book has fifteen pages of color profiles. The main addition is the 70 pages of computer generated renderings. These are of high quality and give the reader a better grasp of the aircraft's features than photos and text alone can. That said, the value of these drawings would have been enhanced greatly by more detailed captioning. The reader is pretty much left on his own.The text proper gives a fairly complete development history of the aircraft through the first 14 prototypes and the A, B, C, and D production models. The aircraft's service history in the Spanish Civil War and the opening stages of the Second World War are also well covered. In conclusion, the book is highly recommended for those who do not have the original card cover edition. If one has that edition then it is to be hoped that the above comments on the differences will be of value in deciding whether the present book will be a worthwhile purchase.

From plot twists to dialogue, authors have a long list to think about when revising and polishing a novel. These 101 questions and explanations will help you improve and check your novel’s opening, plot and character development, conflict, pacing, dialogue, and of course the writing itself. After months or years of working on a story, it’s difficult to check the quality on every fiction element. 101 Questions looks at overarching issues, small details, and writing technique. You may learn about new techniques and tips, see a method differently, or realize that you forgot a trick. This handy list of 101 questions explores many possible ways to improve specific areas, add layers and depth, strengthen conflict, find plot holes, and identify writing issues. Contents: All About Story All About Editing The Beginning Plot & Structure Characters Chapters & Pacing Scenes Dialogue Setting and Description The Ending Strong Writing Final Checks Share Your Book! Sample Question - #40. Do all of your characters have strong feelings about each other? Working on this element truly adds another layer to your story. In life, we meet people and classify them right away. It’s not often that we know a person but don’t have any opinions or feelings about them. But we see that in stories all the time. Sometimes I read or edit a novel and have a hard time telling the characters apart. This arises when the characters aren’t distinct, but it’s also caused by a lack of feeling toward each other. If your hero really dislikes another character, that will color the hero’s description and interaction with that character. Take a closer look at your work: make a list of all of your characters and then describe how your hero feels about them. If your hero doesn’t feel anything that shows in your story right now, do you need to make that character more colorful? And by colorful, I mean annoying, more pushy, more opinionated, more deceitful, more secretive, more talkative, more silent, more helpful, more sweet, more of a pushover, more something? Look at the relationship between all of your main characters. It might help to make a chart. Then think about how they interact and secretly feel about each other. You can have a lot of fun in this area, and it really deepens your story.

Who decided not to split infinitives? With whom should we take issue if in fact, we wish to boldly write what no grammarian hath writ before? In Founding Grammars, Rosemarie Ostler delves into the roots of our grammar obsession to answer these questions and many more. Standard grammar and accurate spelling are widely considered hallmarks of a good education, but their exact definitions are much more contentious - capable of inciting a full-blown grammar war at the splice of a comma, battles readily visible in the media and online in the comments of blogs and chat rooms. With an accessible and enthusiastic journalistic approach, Ostler considers these grammatical shibboleths, tracing current debates back to America's earliest days, an era when most families owned only two books - the Bible and a grammar primer. Along the way, she investigates colorful historical characters on both sides of the grammar debate in her efforts to unmask the origins of contemporary speech. Linguistic founding fathers like Noah Webster, Tory expatriate Lindley Murray, and post-Civil War literary critic Richard Grant White, all play a featured role in creating the rules we've come to use, and occasionally discard, throughout the years. Founding Grammars is for curious readers who want to know where grammar rules have come from, where they've been, and where they might go next.

Founding Grammars: How Early America's War Over Words Shaped Today's Language, by Rosemarie Ostler

Review

“Ostler brings the 'war of grammar' up to the present. Lively and revealing discussion of a battle that seems likely to continue as long as English is spoken.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“[A] remarkable history.” ―Booklist

“Fans of Lynne Truss...or anyone with an interest in language history will find this a worthy addition to the grammar conversation.” ―Library Journal

“In the late nineteenth century there were people who would have given you grief at a dinner party for using barbarous and illegitimate words such as JEOPARDIZE, PRACTITIONER and GUBERNATORIAL. If you wonder why, Rosemarie Ostler's book tells you, while showing that grammar-pusses have been with us for centuries now while English has kept on keeping on.” ―John McWhorter, author of The Power of Babel, Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue, and What Language Is

“Founding Grammars is a fanfare for the common word, a welcome reminder that American English is a language of the people, by the people, and for the people. Noah Webster would approve.” ―Patricia T. O'Conner, author of Woe Is I and coauthor of Origins of the Specious

“Why do we say 'according to Webster,' or 'according to Strunk and White,' and what exactly does that mean? Why do so many of us cling to outmoded rules while so many others dismiss or ignore them altogether? Rosemarie Ostler's well-researched and entertaining exploration of who once called the shots in American usage, and why, offers valuable insights into how the disputed territory of the so-called language wars has changed--and how it has not--since Noah Webster declared the independence of American English in 1789.” ―Charles Harrington Elster, author of Word Workout and The Accidents of Style

You will find yourself thoroughly invested in the lives and careers of a set of idiosyncratic grammarians, and surprised by how familiar their centuries-old arguments sound. Ostler's writing is sharp and lively, infused with a subtle wit that makes the chapters fly by. Founding Grammars is an entertaining and enlightening tale, sure to be enjoyed by anyone with a love of language.

A book for every grammarian in the United States By Jared R Towler I have many of the grammars mentioned in this book, but I had no idea which was most popular or how important they were. This is a fascinating exploration of the roots of English, at least as taught, in the early days of the United States. Many questions my students have asked me are answered here.

God's Blueprint is the boldest statement yet by the popular investigator of the past, Christopher Knight. While he is sees a role for all religions he has none himself, yet Knight makes the case for a deliberate design to the human universe using detailed astronomical data. Surprisingly, most scientists already accept the basic notion of aGod but because they require factual, checkable evidence, few have ever publicly supported the idea. But now new evidence has became available that provides hard-nosed evidence of God's existence. Nothing less than God's blueprint appears to have been discovered - found accidentally by the author while researching the science of the Neolithic (late Stone Age) people of Western Europe. Knight makes his case in a step-by-step manner, making you the jury. The evidence will be sure to surprise and delight you. The only questions that remains is, will scientists embrace the concept of a Supreme Creator, as they once did in Isaac Newton's day - and will theologians be prepared to look at new evidence that compliments their ancient scriptures?

There are many things that are amazing in life By Amazon Customer There are many things that are amazing in life, and many more issues that aligned academics and philosophers on opposite conceptual poles. One question that hugely baffles humanity is about our origins and purpose in life, and how we can retrace our origins. Mr. Christopher Knight does a wonderful job of revelation the role of the creator in this book and offers an exhilarating story of secrets embedded in our DNA and roles played the moon in our creation and subsequent evolution. Indeed, his theories might remain unwelcome in some of the mainstream world of academia, but they are very well known and accepted in the ordinary world, including mine. I did not have to be religious to know that I am a product of deliberate design but the laws of symmetry and order that govern, not only the existence of human bodies, but also of all other things visible to the eye, and accessible to other known four senses, can surely attest the existence of a grand designer and mighty builder of our civilizations."God's Blueprint" is a must read for both academics and non-academics who wish to stretch their minds by attempting to provide alternative views to Mr. Knight's well-researched and nicely articulated theories that might prove vital to our understanding about our origins and secrets of our existence.

Much of the material isn't new to a person of faith, but Knight seems to have started out as an agnostic. The beauty of the mathematics that underpin so much of nature and the way in which it reveals a precise intelligence of design was startling. He presents some facts about cosmology and the numbers that underly it that I was not aware of. The puzzle of disparate systems and planetary movements that nurtured and protect life on Earth everyday without chaos is truly remarkable. The author explores the staggering odds for an environment in the universe that meets the requirements for supporting intelligent life. Knight makes the case with scientific examples for Earth being an exception among planets. He suggests even though cosmologists are presently discovering planets that may be inhabitable, real suitability for life is just conjecture. Probably none have the benefits of constant liquid water, water vapor that becomes rain, moderate temperatures and a moon that influences the planetary tilt for seasons, nor the weather systems that provide for plant growth. At the least the book supports the argument for intelligent design. At the most, for a loving, nurturing God that has a purpose for the human race. Knight isn't endorsing any religious philosophy, only the fact that there is something amazingly special, obviously preplanned and magical about our blue planet. In the last chapters he touches on our Neolithic ancestors. Rather than the hunter gatherer near-humans we assume they were, they possessed an intelligence that built time and season-measuring monuments like Stonehenge with mathematic exactitude. Measurement systems taken for granted today had their root in those ancestors and their measurement of the movements of the heavenly bodies. He also relates a personal experience that occurred while exploring a Neolithic site that changed his outlook on the extrasensory.I highly recommend this book to the believer and unbeliever alike. It was easy to read and a reminder that each person has a greater purpose and a responsibility for stewardship of a home that was likely fashioned for us by a Designer we may one day realize.

The Scientific and Spiritual Cosmos By jaybee Knight supplies interesting scientific evidence of mankind's arrival on earth which many others have speculated on spiritually and philosophically.. The recent novel The Royal Secret demonstrates the means and the intelligence link from that time via great scientists such as da Vinci, and Newton, to Francis Crick the recent discoverer of DNA.who believed in our alien origins. The Royal Secret tells of Francis Bacon the Tudor polymath genius mathematician and inventor of the bilateral code and scientist who wrote under the pseudonym of Shakespeare in which his celestial ideas reflected the infinity theory of today's quantum physics in a spiritual cosmos of universal oneness.

Excerpt from Introduction to the Theory of Fourier's Series and IntegralsThis book forms the first volume of the new edition of my book on Fourier's Series and Integrals and the Mathematical Theory of the Conduction of Heat, published in 1906; and now for some time out of print. Since 1906 so much advance has been made in the Theory of Fourier's Series and Integrals, as well as in the mathematical discussion of Heat Conduction, that it has seemed advisable to write a completely new work, and to issue the same in two volumes. The first volume, which now appears, is concerned with the Theory of Infinite Series and Integrals, with special reference to Fourier's Series and Integrals. The second volume will be devoted to the Mathematical Theory of the Conduction of Heat.No one can properly understand Fourier's Series and Integrals without a knowledge of what is involved in the convergence of infinite series and integrals. With these questions is bound up the development of the idea of a limit and a function, and both are founded upon the modern theory of real numbers. The first three chapters deal with these matters. In Chapter IV. the Definite Integral is treated from Riemann's point of view, and special attention is given to the question of the convergence of infinite integrals. The theory of series whose terms are functions of a single variable, and the theory of integrals which contain an arbitrary parameter are discussed in Chapters V. and VI. It will be seen that the two theories are closely related, and can be developed on similar lines. The treatment of Fourier's Series in Chapter VII. depends on Dirichlet's Integrals. There, and elsewhere throughout the book, the Second Theorem of Mean Value will be found an essential part of the argument.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Every page contains many broken type font which especially make this mathematics book not only useless but also mentally annoying and physically irritating. I returned mine for refund; Amazon was quite polite.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One of the best books about series By Ömer Köksal Although very dated, it is one of the best books about series. It is not only about Fourier's series. It covers very deep information about analysing series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Carslaw introduces Fourier Series and Integrals By Michael R. La Martina My favorite thing about this volume is that it provides an excellent historical introduction. There are many historical footnotes integrated into the presentation.I would not call this a textbook, but it does contain a fair number of exercises, gently called examples. However the level of these examples ranges from moderate to great difficulty. The text is dated 1930 and does not benefit from a modern view, but all results are rigorously presented, and sufficient background is provided for use by anyone with a background of Integral Calculus. The integral used in the development of the material is the Riemann Integral, but the author includes an appendix covering Lebesgue Integration. The Dover edition is of good physical quality, but my original copy is a bit worn from years of reference so I have purchased an additional copy that remains unwrapped.
