You will find yourself thoroughly invested in the lives and careers of a set of idiosyncratic grammarians, and surprised by how familiar their centuries-old arguments sound. Ostler's writing is sharp and lively, infused with a subtle wit that makes the chapters fly by. Founding Grammars is an entertaining and enlightening tale, sure to be enjoyed by anyone with a love of language.

A book for every grammarian in the United States By Jared R Towler I have many of the grammars mentioned in this book, but I had no idea which was most popular or how important they were. This is a fascinating exploration of the roots of English, at least as taught, in the early days of the United States. Many questions my students have asked me are answered here.
