By Val If you are a fan of art photography and have wanted to try some of the techniques that the pros uses – I love Peter Lik’s work – then this is the book for you. A straight forward training on how to get the most out of your camera and what type of camera to use to get extraordinary shots. No, this isn’t going to give you mad skills with a cellphone or the $50 camera that came with an SD card and a case. But it will give you the ability to use lower and midrange cameras that give you control over key settings to capture images that will blow your mind. For example, night sky shots. Long exposure settings – 15 to 20 seconds – using the techniques described in this book will give you the night sky in motion. You can capture lightening, humming birds or the burst of street lights just before sunrise to make memorable pictures that you will want to print and mount. What about those perfect landscapes? Learn the trick to composite images using varying settings to assemble a landscape that jumps from the screen. This is not a book of abstract theory, but it does have a lot of technical information so give yourself time, work with what you learn. You will be glad that you did!

By James Minter Cameras are everywhere, and everywhere are people making images. But I’d guess over 90% of all pictures taken use the automatic or pre-set features of the camera. They guarantee capturing an image but often they are bland/samey/not how you remembered seeing the scene or object. To breakout of mediocrity any camera enthusiast needs to master exposure and its three components – aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Once you are in control of your camera and these setting you can really let your creative juices flow and make different, exciting, unusual, eye-catching images – and you don’t have to have a really expensive camera to achieve these results.Great pictures are a combination of creativity and technology. You may see a really interesting object or person or find an unusual viewpoint but if you cannot control the camera the chances are you won’t do it justice.Brian Black is very aware of this and put pen to paper to help you master these three distinct yet inextricable related ideas. Further he gives you ideas of how to apply your newly mastered knowledge to produce the sort of images you see in the glossy magazines. This book is not dealing with new or ground breaking camera techniques but Brian has pulled the information together in a consumable form for easy digestion. And of course like any newly acquired skill unless you practice, practice, practice you won’t gain the long term benefit.

If you want to learn how to take better photos with your DSLR By Sharon Chen If you want to learn how to take better photos with your DSLR, buy this book!!As a freelance food photographer and a food blog owner, taking photos is my daily routine and sharpening my skills has always been my focus, for taking photos of all kind such as landscapes and portraits. I have read my books related to this topic, but this book is by far the most practical and easy-to-understand one. All the functions of your DSLR are very well explained in this book with visual graphics. The author also included many stunning photographs in order to show you the results of different camera settings. I especially loved the tricks that Brian teaches in this book. Can't wait to try the light painting! That's so cool!

This book was ok. However, it was so vague that if you have anything other than a minor car accident, this book is not worth it. My wife was involved in a major car accident and we were looking for advice on reaching a fair and honest appraisal of damages for injury. This did not help us value what a good settlement is. So, for anything complex, the book basically is worthless.

Patterns are chosen from a number of sources, including the archives of colleges, museums and private collections. 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Nice but misleading By uncletwinkie The book is nicely produced; the print quality, very good. Most of the patterns are textiles and wallpaper, but not all. The are some ceramics, and a few other things, too. Some of the choices are, to mind mind, poor - such as close-ups of draped or gathered fabric. I want to see it laid flat so the whole print shows. The big disappointment was the cd. Each print has a big copyright symbol on it. (That's the misleading part.) So what's the good of it? Still, the book is useful, and I appreciated that they gave the name of the particular designer when known.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Four Stars By Janine Walker A comprehensive and fascinating collection of designs. Interestingly catalogued by colour not by date.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Buy this only if you have a compulsion for photos of fabric. By seeandbeseen It's an OK book to flip through if you're looking for inspiration, but it really just seems to be photos of someone's fabric collection, with brief descriptions. There are lots of ways to find photos of fabric, so don't spend too much on this book. The front cover shows a woodblock-style print that's very sharp, but since most of the photos inside are of printed fabric, usually enlarged, the crispness just isn't there.

Best Ebook PDF Eugenics and Other Evils: An Argument against the Scientifically Organized State, by G. K. Chesterton

    G. K. Chesterton’s highly influential treatise on one of the most controversial topics of the early twentieth century When G. K. Chesterton first published Eugenics and Other Evils in 1922, he seemed to be the lone voice of reason against the fashionable concept of selectively breeding a population for “desirable” traits. Though later generations came to associate eugenics with the horrors of the Third Reich, worldwide support for the philosophy was at an all-time high when Chesterton penned this brave and prophetic work. His unique combination of somber analysis and coruscating wit produces an argument too persuasive to ignore. Eugenics and Other Evils showcases Chesterton at the height of his rhetorical powers. His discussion of capitalism, socialism, and the concerns that guide our moral decisions is as pertinent today as the day it was penned.   This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Baptized into the Church of England, Chesterton underwent a crisis of faith as a young man and became fascinated with the occult. He eventually converted to Roman Catholicism and published some of Christianity’s most influential apologetics, including Heretics and Orthodoxy.

A Chilling Voice from the Past By Brad Shorr Eugenics was more than a pseudoscientific fad of the early 1900s: it provided much of the philosophical underpinnings of the Nazi master race and its logical culmination in the concentration camps. Today its ideas lurk more subtly behind such movements as birth control, abortion rights, euthanasia, and cloning. So, this book by GK is far more than an historical curiosity; the arguments he sets forth enable us to see far more clearly the dangers of conceding to a government, a group of elites, or even a vague movement, even a fraction of our rights and responsibilities concerning our own life, death, and progeneration. In the first third of the book, GK utterly dismantles the superficial logic of eugenics. In the second third, he exposes the real objectives of the movement that lay beneath the surface. The final third is a compilation of truly bone chilling articles and letters written by eugenicists of the period. Essentially, GK believes that the movement arose out of the capitalist desire to maintain cheap labor and the socialist desire to scientifically organize society. His analysis of these seemingly opposed forces has a heavy political, social, and historical focus, and is surprisingly light on religious considerations. He foresees that eugenics unleashed would result in an utterly inhuman society. Unfortunately the Nazis proved his theory. He foresees the dehumanizing effects of even a more moderate eugenics, which unfortunately has come to pass and is quite evident in the monstrous plight of our poor, homeless, mentally handicapped, and unborn. How do these social horrors occur? GK believes that most people are right, but dont know that they are right. Thus theywe--are susceptible and even defenseless to attacks by an organized group of activists driven by malevolent or merely foolish motives. This book shows how that actually played out in pre-WWII Europe, and gives us a better understanding of how it is happening now, and how we might reverse course.

Rocha I read this old and excellent book, here in Brazil.Writen by Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 - 14 June 1936), when the pseudo-science of eugenics was perhaps more popular is USA, than ecology is today, this book remains excellent and relevant. And this happens, more than 80 years after its publication. Then, eugenics was a thing supported by great american politicians, such as american Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Taft,Herbert Hoover, etc.Outside USA famous leaders such as the last Kaiser, Lenin, Stalin, etc. were eugenists.Famous scientists of this time, such as Thomas Alva Edison, Albert Einstein, Wright Brothers, Charles Lindenberg,Nicolas Tesla, etc. were eugenists.Writers such as H. G. Wells and Georger Bernard Shaw were eugenists and socialists. At first, this book was a work of courage. It was against the political, scientific and press stablishment. At second, this book is divided in parts:PART ONE: THE FALSE THEORY.PART TWO: THE REAL AIM.I really read another ediction of this excellent book, when I could read:"Most Eugenists are Euphemists. I mean merely that short words startle them, while long words soothe them. And they are utterly incapable of translating the one into the other, however obviously they mean the same thing. Say to them "The persuasive and even coercive powers of the citizen should enable him to make sure that the burden of longevity in the previous generations does not become disproportionate and intolerable, especially to the females?"; say this to them and they sway slightly to and fro like babies sent to sleep in cradles. Say to them "Murder your mother," and they sit up quite suddenly. Yet the two sentences, in cold logic, are exactly the same."In another page of this book, I read:"I am myself primarily opposed to Socialism, or Collectivism or Bolshevism or whatever we call it, for a primary reason not immediately involved here: the ideal of property. I say the ideal and not merely the idea; and this alone disposes of the moral mistake in the matter. It disposes of all the dreary doubts of the Anti-Socialists about men not yet being angels, and all the yet drearier hopes of the Socialists about men soon being supermen. I do not admit that private property is a concession to baseness and selfishness; I think it is a point of honour. I think it is the most truly popular of all points of honour. But this, though it has everything to do with my plea for a domestic dignity, has nothing to do with this passing summary of the situation of Socialism. I only remark in passing that it is vain for the more vulgar sort of Capitalists, sneering at ideals, to say to me that in order to hate Socialism "You must alter human nature." I answer "Yes. You must alter it for the worse."In the end of this book, there's a third part, with articles writen by eugenicists/eugenicists. Ironically, they were doomed by time, as false preachers. The ediction that I read wasn't this book, published by Dodo Press.Even so, my give my congratulation to all persons, publishing the works of this genius called Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 - 14 June 1936).

A not-too-clinical approach about emotional intelligence By Lily Elsa Dean The tone of this book's writing is this is written in a not-so-clinical yet very relatable. The section describing strategies for improving your emotional intelligence for better relationships is my favorite section in this book. Some of the tips in here are written many times in several books, yet because of human nature that tends to make simple things complicated, a little reminder is helpful.

We all know that emotion is one powerful force within us.It does not only mean how a person feel but how he/she reacts and master his feelings over logical reasons. It is a skill in a way that if we manage to control our emotions, we will definitely avoid hurting anybody's feelings by any unkind words when we are angry plus we could think logically and clearly see the advantages and disadvantages of every decision. In a recent study, some researcher found out that the reason why people leave and resign from their job is because of how they are treated by their immediate boss. It is only an indication that emotional intelligence is much more powerful when being address properly.Grab a copy of this very educational and motivational book. It is worth reading.

ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL "CLASSICS" OF PHILOSOPHICAL APOLOGETICS By Steven H Propp William Paley (1743-1805) was an English Christian apologist, philosopher, and utilitarian. He also wrote The evidences of Christianity. This was his last book, first published in 1802.He begins with his famous "watchmaker" argument, in which he supposes that if he "pitched my foot against a stone, and were asked how the stone came to be there, I might possibly answer, that for any thing I knew... it had lain there for ever... But suppose I had found a watch upon the ground... I should hardly think of the answer which I had before given... Yet why should not this answer serve for the watch as well as for the stone...? For this reason... that when we come to inspect the watch, we perceive... that its several parts are framed and put together for a purpose... This mechanism being observed... the inference we think is inevitable, that the watch must have had a maker---that there must have existed... an artificer or artificers who formed it for the purpose which we find it actually to answer, who comprehended its construction and designed its use." (Pg. 9-10)He then points out that "Nor is any thing gained by running the difficulty farther back... by supposing the watch before us to have been produced from another watch... and so on indefinitely... Contrivance is still unaccounted for. We still want a contriver." (Pg. 16) He poses the objection, "Why resort to contrivance when power is omnipotent?" He says, "one answer is this: It is only by the display of contrivance that the existence, the agency, the wisdom of the Deity COULD be testified to his rational creatures." (Pg. 34)Later, he deals with counter-argument (that would become stronger with the 1859 publication of Darwin's 'Origin of Species') that such contrivance might have been produced by chance: "Universal experience is against it. What does chance ever do for us? In the human body... chance... may produce a wen, a wart, a mole, a pimple, but never an eye. Among inanimate substances, a clod, a pebble, a liquid drop might be; but never was a watch, a telescope, an organized body of any kind... the effect of chance." (Pg. 49)He further argues for the "goodness of the deity" based on the fact that "the Deity has superadded pleasure to animal sensations beyond what was necessary for any other purpose, or when the purpose... might have been effected by the operation of pain." (Pg. 295) His ultimate conclusion is, "The marks of design are too strong to be gotten over. Design must have had a designer. That designer must have been a person. That person is God." (Pg. 285)Paley's book is essential reading (even if one is only reading it with a desire to refute it) for all philosophers, theologians, and scientists.

A valuable source By mike Though written in the late 1800's, this book provides many insights into the current clash between science and religion, including intelligent design. I won't go further with my personal views, only say that this book helps clarify many aspects of the issue.

A very detailed exposition of animal characteristics and environmental adaptations is given and when read with 21st century eyes reads like an argument for Evolution with God attached to protect the book from the censors and the author from disrepute. I have the same opinion about Descartes who had to adopt a religious veneer as protection from the times he lived in. It is certainly a compelling read however you approach this classic work!

A bucket list guide to walking Rome, very thourough By Italophile Book Reviews The subtitle of this book is The Definitive Walking Guide to the Eternal City. The 15 walking tours are varied through era and location, and include:-a small map and a things of interest,-as well as the opening hours of the monuments and museums,-bus and public transport information,-ticket purchasing and lining up info, and-other bits of practical information. The book has tours for the day tripper, with a Rome in a Day Tour. There is the obligatory Vatican Tour. Then the Tombs and Catacomb Tour. Ostia gets a tour of its own. The eras have tours: Renaissance, Byzantine, Ancient Rome. And special locations have tours: Capitoline Hill, certain Piazzas, Vias and hills.I've always struggled to get a grip on Rome because the city is so big. Public transport can bring you around to the starting points for your tours, but the crush of humanity, smells, sights and traffic always leaves me exhausted, too exhausted to enjoy what I’m seeing. Traveling in off-peak seasons can help. The historical significance of what you will see in Rome is pretty much left for you the reader to discover someplace else, and over time, since Rome's history is about 3000 years old. The author is an experience tour guide, and he knows his history, so the tours are complete and comprehensive.A dream would be to have all the time to prepare for the 15 tours, and then all the time and stamina to do all 15 tours. It just might make the bucket list of a few people. I imagine the book would make a good accompaniment for repeated visits to the Eternal City, doing a few tours each time. Please visit my full and illustrated review at Italophile Book Reviews. I received a review copy of the book.http://italophilebookreviews.blogspot.nl/2015/07/strolling-through-rome-by-mario-erasmo.html

A Fabulous Easy Way to See Roma By Grey Wolffe In his own words (and the sub-title) of the book, this is the definitive walking guide to the Eternal City, and his word is good enough for me. All kidding aside, Professore Erasmo (who previously wrote a guide to Florence/Firenza), has a PhD from Yale and teaches Classics at the University of Georgia. If you look on the UGA website, you will see that his students rave about him as a teacher.Whatever he brings to his classes, he brings a light and chatty style to this book. It’s like going to see the city with a friend who knows all about the history and culture of Rome, and also the ‘special’ places that the locals go.Depending where in the Eternal City you want to go, he has a walking tour that you can do in a day (Tour One) or if you do the whole book, looks to take weeks. The good thing is that you can do the tours sequentially or just go to the places you have time to see. Each tour starts with its’ own map. Whichever you choose you won’t go wrong. At the end of the book is a very useful listing of Italian holidays when you can expect everything to be closed; and there is a listing of the hours of most of the monuments and museums. Lastly there is a Glossary of the meanings of names of what the different types of monuments are called (i.e. cippus = burial marker).Worthwhile for any traveler to Rome, and a good companion to your Rough Guide.Zeb Kantrowitz zworstblog.blogspot.com zebsblog@gmail.com

For authors who want to learn how to promote your book and sell more books online, and authors who are looking for book marketing tips, successful book marketing and book launches, and easy ebook marketing plans.

    Author Interview

    Q. What was your motivation to write Sales & Fails? A. After failing for years at marketing my books—and wasting tons of time and money—I said enough is enough! I needed to find a better way to market my books and get out of the red and into the black. I needed to figure out how to sell my book on Amazon and have successful book launches, stat. Q: So did you succeed? Do you sell more books now? A: Yes! I'm still holding on to the day job, but then again, it was never my goal to become a full-time author. I wanted to write a few books and not lose money on the venture. I now sell more kindle books and also books in stores without much effort! Q: What qualifies you to write a book marketing book? A: I've marketed my other books, Chronicle of the Mound Builders and Living the Thin Life, with varying levels of success. Or, more specifically, I totally failed the first few years, but more recently have started to make a profit. And, more importantly, I've learned where to spend my time and where NOT to spend my time so that I'm only doing things that work and that I enjoy. It's self-publishing 101: make more money than you spend, and enjoy what you do! Q: Will your book marketing tips work for me? A: I hope so! At the very least, I hope I can provide a few laughs and steer you away from techniques that don't work and help you figure out what will sell your books. Q: Why should readers pick this book instead of the hundreds of other books promising to make me a best-selling author overnight? A: I'd like to think my humorous approach about everything I did wrong will be an enjoyable read for authors wondering how to market your book. I hope my book marketing tips help you stop wasting time and start making money. I can't promise overnight success—no one can—but I can promise to share helpful tips (and funny fails) so you know where to spend your time and where NOT to spend your time. Book marketing for authors isn't easy, but it doesn't have to be hard either!

    About the Author

Elle Marie's books are diverse but all have one thing in common—they reflect her passions. From maintaining a healthy lifestyle (Living the Thin Life) to unearthing mysteries (Chronicle of the Mound Builders) to visiting her daughter in Paris (contributor to the anthology That's Paris), she writes what she knows and loves. Her most recent book, Sales and Fails, is a humorous account of all the struggles she encountered marketing her first three books, peppered with a few success stories as well.

She's never far from her computer; by day she works in the IT field, by night she writes her latest inspiration. When she does step away from the screen, she enjoys spending time with her husband in their hometown of St. Louis.

I truly enjoyed Elle's light-hearted take on marketing By Braxton As a fellow Indie author of suspense and thrillers, I truly enjoyed Elle's light-hearted take on marketing. Although I'm only three years into the self-publishing scene, as I read her travails in marketing her books, all I could think was, I did that. Yep, tried that one, too. With mostly the same results. Some of my experience has differed from hers (ex, I sell paperbacks fairly well at our local farmers market), but for the most part she is spot on. She touched on one thing that I think needed a bit more emphasis: what works for one person might not work for you. The inverse in true as well. What didn't work for someone else might work very well for you. So, as you read of her successes and failures, weigh the chance of success for yourself. Like me, you might do well selling directly at farmers markets and fairs. That said, I can only repeat the most important advice she gives: write a great book! (By the way, Elle, I have another scheme, I mean, new idea for reducing our inventories. Might be another bust, but we'll have fun. PM me. LOL) - Braxton DeGarmo, author of the MedAir Series and other great books. (PS. I was given an ARC by the author for an honest review. See, ARCs really can get you reviews.)

Wit & Wisdom by another name is "Sales & Fails" By MaryInFlorida Reading someone’s self-examination of failure and success can be tough, but Elle Marie does it with witty panache while imparting great advice for authors and self-publishers. She doesn’t flinch when it comes to admitting mistakes—time-and-money-down-the-drain kinds of mistakes—but those admissions make for excellent teaching moments that can help any entrepreneurial author avoid them.If you’re a been-there-done-that self-publisher like me, you’ll laugh out loud (with her) as you read, all the while thinking, "Thank the lord I didn’t do that!" You’ll cringe at her revelations of frustration and disappointment while recognizing your own similar experiences. You’ll be amazed at her broad range of technical skills, tenacity and patience—all aimed at making sales—and wonder, "Can I do that?" Finally, you’ll cheer when she finds success.Best of all, you’ll find new ideas that just might work for marketing your own books. I know I did.

Great for a first-time self-publisher By Diane Stevenson I'm about to self-publish my first novel and currently working on my marketing plan so the timing couldn't have been better (I received an ARC at my request). Thoroughly enjoyed it and found it extremely helpful in cutting through the clutter and steering me in the right direction. So 3 main reasons why it works for me. First, the style is extremely energetic and accessible, fun without being flippant, easy to read - I read it in one sitting Secondly - it is packed with info and definitely no less informative for its concise style and length. Thirdly, the advice balances not being preachy or dictatorial with giving a clear steer on what works, although the author stresses that everyone is different. Finally, the author is incredibly honest and generous in the info she gives, she's not trying to be an expert but simply sharing her experience and that's invaluable to me - what she says, for example on web presence, live events, promotional items are exactly the questions I'm asking myself at the moment. Overall, its proving to be a big help in helping me plan my own marketing.

Venom research and technology has advanced greatly, rapidly transforming our knowledge of reptile venoms. Research advances, like the development of molecular systematics, provide the framework necessary to reconstruct the evolutionary history of glands and fangs. Such research developments have expanded our understanding of venom's evolution and its usefulness in therapeutic development. The results of this punctuated toxin molecular evolutionary expansion include protein neofunctionalization. While these changes may impact antivenom efficacy, this molecular diversity also facilitates their usefulness in the development of novel drug therapies.Venomous Reptiles And Their Toxins brings together the world's leading toxinologists in this comprehensive study of the entire scope of reptile venoms, from clinical effects to evolution to drug design and development. The book contains detailed applied chapters on clinical care of the envenomed patient, ineffective traditional or modern remedies, occupational considerations involved in the maintenance of institutional venomous reptile collections, veterinary care for venomous reptiles and research methods used in venom research. This book also devotes a chapter to each toxin class found in reptile venoms, detailing the full trajectory of research on the peptide or protein in question. These chapters discuss each toxin's respective role in the envenomation process through to how each has been explored for their biomedical potential. This book is a unique resource for anyone working with venomous reptiles.
