Author Interview
Q. What was your motivation to write Sales & Fails? A. After failing for years at marketing my books—and wasting tons of time and money—I said enough is enough! I needed to find a better way to market my books and get out of the red and into the black. I needed to figure out how to sell my book on Amazon and have successful book launches, stat. Q: So did you succeed? Do you sell more books now? A: Yes! I'm still holding on to the day job, but then again, it was never my goal to become a full-time author. I wanted to write a few books and not lose money on the venture. I now sell more kindle books and also books in stores without much effort! Q: What qualifies you to write a book marketing book? A: I've marketed my other books, Chronicle of the Mound Builders and Living the Thin Life, with varying levels of success. Or, more specifically, I totally failed the first few years, but more recently have started to make a profit. And, more importantly, I've learned where to spend my time and where NOT to spend my time so that I'm only doing things that work and that I enjoy. It's self-publishing 101: make more money than you spend, and enjoy what you do! Q: Will your book marketing tips work for me? A: I hope so! At the very least, I hope I can provide a few laughs and steer you away from techniques that don't work and help you figure out what will sell your books. Q: Why should readers pick this book instead of the hundreds of other books promising to make me a best-selling author overnight? A: I'd like to think my humorous approach about everything I did wrong will be an enjoyable read for authors wondering how to market your book. I hope my book marketing tips help you stop wasting time and start making money. I can't promise overnight success—no one can—but I can promise to share helpful tips (and funny fails) so you know where to spend your time and where NOT to spend your time. Book marketing for authors isn't easy, but it doesn't have to be hard either!Categories

About the Author
Elle Marie's books are diverse but all have one thing in common—they reflect her passions. From maintaining a healthy lifestyle (Living the Thin Life) to unearthing mysteries (Chronicle of the Mound Builders) to visiting her daughter in Paris (contributor to the anthology That's Paris), she writes what she knows and loves. Her most recent book, Sales and Fails, is a humorous account of all the struggles she encountered marketing her first three books, peppered with a few success stories as well.
She's never far from her computer; by day she works in the IT field, by night she writes her latest inspiration. When she does step away from the screen, she enjoys spending time with her husband in their hometown of St. Louis.

I truly enjoyed Elle's light-hearted take on marketing By Braxton As a fellow Indie author of suspense and thrillers, I truly enjoyed Elle's light-hearted take on marketing. Although I'm only three years into the self-publishing scene, as I read her travails in marketing her books, all I could think was, I did that. Yep, tried that one, too. With mostly the same results. Some of my experience has differed from hers (ex, I sell paperbacks fairly well at our local farmers market), but for the most part she is spot on. She touched on one thing that I think needed a bit more emphasis: what works for one person might not work for you. The inverse in true as well. What didn't work for someone else might work very well for you. So, as you read of her successes and failures, weigh the chance of success for yourself. Like me, you might do well selling directly at farmers markets and fairs. That said, I can only repeat the most important advice she gives: write a great book! (By the way, Elle, I have another scheme, I mean, new idea for reducing our inventories. Might be another bust, but we'll have fun. PM me. LOL) - Braxton DeGarmo, author of the MedAir Series and other great books. (PS. I was given an ARC by the author for an honest review. See, ARCs really can get you reviews.)

Wit & Wisdom by another name is "Sales & Fails" By MaryInFlorida Reading someone’s self-examination of failure and success can be tough, but Elle Marie does it with witty panache while imparting great advice for authors and self-publishers. She doesn’t flinch when it comes to admitting mistakes—time-and-money-down-the-drain kinds of mistakes—but those admissions make for excellent teaching moments that can help any entrepreneurial author avoid them.If you’re a been-there-done-that self-publisher like me, you’ll laugh out loud (with her) as you read, all the while thinking, "Thank the lord I didn’t do that!" You’ll cringe at her revelations of frustration and disappointment while recognizing your own similar experiences. You’ll be amazed at her broad range of technical skills, tenacity and patience—all aimed at making sales—and wonder, "Can I do that?" Finally, you’ll cheer when she finds success.Best of all, you’ll find new ideas that just might work for marketing your own books. I know I did.

Great for a first-time self-publisher By Diane Stevenson I'm about to self-publish my first novel and currently working on my marketing plan so the timing couldn't have been better (I received an ARC at my request). Thoroughly enjoyed it and found it extremely helpful in cutting through the clutter and steering me in the right direction. So 3 main reasons why it works for me. First, the style is extremely energetic and accessible, fun without being flippant, easy to read - I read it in one sitting Secondly - it is packed with info and definitely no less informative for its concise style and length. Thirdly, the advice balances not being preachy or dictatorial with giving a clear steer on what works, although the author stresses that everyone is different. Finally, the author is incredibly honest and generous in the info she gives, she's not trying to be an expert but simply sharing her experience and that's invaluable to me - what she says, for example on web presence, live events, promotional items are exactly the questions I'm asking myself at the moment. Overall, its proving to be a big help in helping me plan my own marketing.
