This revised and expanded edition of Candace Savage’s best-selling book about ravens and crows is enhanced by additional paintings, drawings, and photos, as well as a fascinating selection of first-person stories and poems about remarkable encounters with crows. In one story, a pack of crows brilliantly thwarts an attack by a Golden Eagle; in another, a mischievous crow rescues the author from grief. And in a third piece, after nursing a battered baby crow back to health until it flies off with other crows, Louise Erdrich hauntingly describes her altered awareness as she listens for the dark laugh” of crows while she works.Based on two decades of audacious research by scientists around the world, the book also provides an unprecedented, evidence-based glimpse into corvids’ intellectual, social, and emotional lives. But whether viewed through the lens of science, myth, or everyday experience, the result is always the same. These birds are so smartand so mysteriousthey take your breath away.

I re ad the original ten years ago and remember little about it, but have read other books by Savage and they're all good. I read my library copy so whatever CD supposed to come with the book, I know nothing about. I will say the book is a very fast read, maybe an hour, but it's substantive. It's a mixture, a few poems, some folk tales, some accounts of crow behaviors, including the famed new Caledonian crow using tools. There are very short segments from much older books on crows. The illustrations are excellent, the same miscellaneous content as the text. Some of the material is well know, such as the crows in Japan using passing cars as nutcrackers. Some are less known--the maximum known span of a crow life is only 14 years, and the folktale association of ravens and wolves appears to have been substantiated. Overall this short book is themed on how complicated and fascination the 40 some species of crows are (the number is not agreed on), There's one extraordinary photograph of a New Caledonian crow using a stick to probe a crevice for insects, one that a reader will long remember.

By Harolyn Cumlet Once I got past the interjection of different crow stories into the narrative and the pagination issues, I got it. Wonderful birds. They look for us during the day and object to some of the foods offered. They are smarter than I have ever been or could aspire to be. Most admirable species and a great collection of facts and stories.
