By Elizabeth Elle I bought this book as part of a gift of two books about water harvesting and storage for prepper’s, for my father. My dad loves reading prepper’s guides and information. I picked this one for him because it targeted something he was really interested in: water. This book has so much information. It begins with a great introduction, explaining the importance of water and why we need to be so careful with it. The book contains information about why everyone needs to have an idea of a safe water supply, including non-preppers. It provides incidences in which safe water was scarce for a time. It convinced me to continue reading the book, even as a non-prepper myself! It outlines ways of storing water safely (did you know milk jugs are not a good option?) as well as harvesting the water. Most interesting to me were the chapters on purifying water and finding emergency sources of water. I found it completely fascinating and I learned so much! I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially if they are preppers or if they just find water information such as this interesting. I thought it was so useful and I feel a little better knowing about how to collect, store, and purify water!

It have facts and reasons and did not fill the reader with fear, but with truth and a game plan. It's not a crazy thing to plan for disaster. Not even an apocalypse, but the chance that over the course of one's life, there could be a problem with having access to clean water. I already keep two gallons of water on hand, but I need to do plan for at least a gallon a day for at least two weeks. Luther shows the reader how to accomplish this without breaking the bank. The biggest thing I took from Luther's book is to be prepared as use any resource availabe accordingly. Drinking water is obviously a big deal, buthe without water on hand for washing and sanitizing, a variety of issues can still arise, including death. Not to end on a down note, there are things in this book anyone can use daily. If you travel, make sure you have plenty of water on hand (should be obvious, but...) and one can make their own homemade electrolyte drink in a pinch! No need for Gatorade when most people already have the proper ingredients in their home!

Full of amazing and helpful information. I didn't realize how much I didn't know! This is a complete guide. Most likely the ONLY water related prepping guide one will ever need. Covers finding, conserving, storing and treating water; along with illnesses that come from contaminated water, their symptoms and treatments. Also has many other gold nuggets of knowledge; like waste removal, website urls for further research on a variety of topics, an accurate description of what life without water would be like and drills to prepare for the inevitable.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic all natural soap creations By Tia_69 I got a pre-view of the book and it's incredible. If you're looking for a "how to soap" book, you'll be disappointed but you would also be missing the point of this book about natural soaps entirely. Showcased are a bit over two dozen artists from around the world who soap entirely "natural" (meaning no artificial colorants, no synthetic fragrances) and create amazing designs that are anything but plain - proving that "natural" doesn't have to be boring. There are some cool ideas and inspirations and truly gorgeous soaps. More of a coffee table/art book choke full of creative soaps.

By Sherri Janney Wonderful and talented artisans ...and each with their own unique and artistic style, from classic to abstract. The one thing they have in common is their love for wholesome and natural ingredients. You will love!

Can I Get a Heck Yeah By Maria Xenidakis If you're interested in soap making, whether it's an idea you've been nursing that you just haven't sat down with yet or if you're already in the lifestyle, you're going to love this book. I've tried my hand at soapmaking before, and the soaps showcased in this book blow my greatest works out of the water. Amazing artistry. A truly impressive show of creativity. You definitely want to take a look.

Throughout history, personal liberty, free markets, and peaceable, voluntary exchanges have been roundly denounced by tyrants and often greeted with suspicion by the general public. Unfortunately, Americans have increasingly accepted the tyrannical ideas of reduced private property rights and reduced rights to profits, and have become enamored with restrictions on personal liberty and control by government. In this latest collection of essays selected from his syndicated newspaper columns, Walter E. Williams takes on a range of controversial issues surrounding race, education, the environment, the Constitution, health care, foreign policy, and more. Skewering the self-righteous and self-important forces throughout society, he makes the case for what he calls the "the moral superiority of personal liberty and its main ingredient—limited government." With his usual straightforward insights and honesty, Williams reveals the loss of liberty in nearly every important aspect of our lives, the massive decline in our values, and the moral tragedy that has befallen Americans today: our belief that it is acceptable for the government to forcibly use one American to serve the purposes of another.

By Lovelette This book has some of the most well thought out points on today's current issues. Walter talks about everything from Social Security to the Constitution. I would highly recommend this book if you want to know more about the government and their tactics. This book encouraged me to read more about the Constitution and it makes me wonder why American citizens are allowing the government to ignore it. Since I am a college student, I am now more aware of a lot more issues due to this read.

Amazon wouldn't let me give it ten, or nine or... Well, you get the idea.As a student of the founding of our country and the Constitution, I can say that Walter Williams understands our country and the founding of the government as few others. Many of the writings in this anthology gets to the very basics and bases of the creation of our government. For those that don't have the time or interest to read Locke, Jefferson, Madison, The Federalist Papers, AND the thought and opinions that went into the discussions of the documents,This book will, at the very least, give you a basic grasp of the Constitutional government created and envisioned by our Founding Fathers.Do not mistake the writings for "only Walter Williams" thoughts on the Constitution. His thoughts are steeped in the amazing creation of our form of government. For instance Mr. Williams asks, as to paying our fair share, How about you keep what you earn and I keep what I earn. If you don't think that's fair, tell me how much of mine you should get and why? Dealing with "Wealth Distribution" this is the very epitome of our Inalienable Right to Property.Buy it today and read it today.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. LOVING THIS BOOK! It is my summer class! By Noir If you want to learn more about the Constitution, or The Federalist Papers, you can sit down and read them which will be very dry if you do it without someone to guide you. In this book, Dr. Williams is your guide. If you do not have a lot of time to sit and read, and study for hours, this is the perfect book. Each article is only 2 pages long. It is written in everyday language. However, it is written with his relaxed and humorous style. (When he sits in for Rush on the radio, he references stories from his childhood, or with his wife to make a point.) It is not necessary to read cover to cover. The book is broken down into parts, and each part has various articles, so you can skip around reading what you prefer first. Dr. Williams references the Federalist Papers number, and the Section and Article of the Constitution, when arguing his point in a specific article, as well as the philosophy behind it. Dr. Williams is well respected - I am reading these articles with a yellow highlighter, and hanging on his every word. He is a national treasure, and yet, I feel like I am sitting with an old friend who is offering me personal instruction.

Best Ebook Online Napoleon and the Struggle for Germany: The Franco-Prussian War of 1813 (Cambridge Military Histories) (Volume 1), by Michael V. Leggiere

This is the first comprehensive history of the campaign that determined control of Germany following Napoleon's catastrophic defeat in Russia. Michael V. Leggiere reveals how, in the spring of 1813, Prussia, the weakest of the great powers, led the struggle against Napoleon as a war of national liberation. Using German, French, British, Russian, Austrian and Swedish sources, he provides a panoramic history that covers the full sweep of the battle for Germany from the mobilization of the belligerents, strategy, and operations to coalition warfare, diplomacy, and civil-military relations. He shows how Russian war weariness conflicted with Prussian impetuosity, resulting in the crisis that almost ended the Sixth Coalition in early June. In a single campaign, Napoleon drove the Russo-Prussian army from the banks of the Saale to the banks of the Oder. The Russo-Prussian alliance was perilously close to imploding, only to be saved at the eleventh-hour by an armistice.

Napoleon and the Struggle for Germany: The Franco-Prussian War of 1813 (Cambridge Military Histories) (Volume 1), by Michael V. Leggiere

Review "This is by far the best study in English of the spring campaign of 1813 which played a crucial part in the final defeat of Napoleon. Based on an impressive array of archival and published sources in many languages, Michael Leggiere traces the desperate Prussian struggle against the new French armies raised by Napoleon after the disaster of 1812, and their equally decisive efforts to keep their exhausted Russian allies in the war. It is unlikely that Leggiere's account will ever be surpassed." Rory Muir, author of Wellington: The Path to Victory, 1769-1814"The 1813 campaign has been rather neglected in recent decades, above all because it was the traditional stamping-ground of German nationalist historians preaching the virtues and achievements of Prussia and its army. It is high time for a detailed new military history rooted in sources not previously available which seeks to provide a balanced view of the Prussian war effort. Michael Leggiere does this with remarkable skill and the result is a readable and fascinating account of Prussia's remarkable achievement." Dominic Lieven, author of Russia Against Napoleon: The Battle for Europe, 1807 to 1814"I wish I had had this book in front of me while writing Citizen Emperor. This is a significant contribution to military history and sets Napoleon's loss of the German campaign in a context that has not been seen before in the English language. Leggiere is the preeminent military historian for the Napoleonic Wars." Philip Dwyer, author of Citizen Emperor: Napoleon in Power, 1799-1815"With this first of two volumes on the 1813 Campaign, Michael Leggiere surely secures his position as a preeminent historian of Napoleonic warfare. In Napoleon and the Struggle for Germany, Leggiere uses profound archival research from across Europe to unearth the machinations and thought-processes within the disjointed allied command, and at Napoleon's headquarters. Leggiere reminds us of the complexity of war, and the inherent difficulty of maintaining alliances; and highlights parallels with the better known difficulties in the Anglo-American alliance during the Second World War." Huw Davies, author of Wellington's Wars: The Making of a Military Genius"This is military history at its most instructive and fascinating. Leggiere skilfully links the dynamics of operational military history to the opportunities and strains of coalition warfare, showing how the Sixth Coalition faced major difficulties from the outset. This approach offers a valuable perspective in which to consider Napoleonic warfare." Jeremy Black, author of The War of 1812 in the Age of Napoleon

About the Author Michael V. Leggiere earned his PhD from Florida State University in 1997 after completing work at FSU's Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution. His first book, Napoleon and Berlin: The Franco-Prussian War in North Germany, 1813 (2002) won the La Société Napoléonienne Internationale 2002 Literary Award. His article, 'From Berlin to Leipzig: Napoleon's Gamble in North Germany, 1813', which appeared in the January 2003 volume of The Journal of Military History, won the Society for Military History's 2004 Moncado Prize for excellence in military history. Dr Leggiere's second book, The Fall of Napoleon: The Allied Invasion of France, 1813-1814 (Cambridge University Press, 2007) won the La Société Napoléonienne Internationale 2008 Literary Award. Dr Leggiere's third book, Blücher: Scourge of Napoleon, was published in February 2014. Dr Leggiere has conducted extensive archival research in Paris, Vienna, and Berlin in 1994, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2009 and topographic research in Germany, France, and Poland in 1998, 2002, and 2013. He is an active member of the Society for Military History, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Consortium on the Revolutionary Era. A pastrami sandwich By Joseph Key The last we heard from Mr. Leggiere was in 2007 when he published THE FALL OF NAPOLEON, one of the most unusual books of history I'd ever seen. It was volume 1 of a history on the 1814 campaign. Thus I was pleasantly surprised that instead of finishing the 1814 campaign he had moved forward to the 1813 campaign with a volume on the 1813 spring campaign. I have always felt that given it's importance the 1813 campaign had been given short shrift. The only worthwhile modern account was Nafziger's published in the late 90's, which I personally found somewhat lacking, falling in the something is better than nothing category. So I was excited when I saw that Mr. Leggiere was taking the campaign on.For want of a better term I consider Mr. Leggiere an academic historian who specializes in the Napoleonic Wars. An analogy is in order. Think of a good pastrami sandwich which has mounds of meat between two slices of bread. For your average military historian the meat is an account of battles, tactics and strategy. Armies and their makeup, and the leaders who led them and the soldier who fought. The politics and diplomatic events are the bread surrounding the meat. To Mr. Leggiere and others like him the meat is the diplomacy and politics of the period while the fighting is the bread. I find the politics and diplomacy of this period fascinating, though at times a bit tedious as you can't wait for the action to start. Diplomacy is often like watching sausage being made. The focus of this book is Prussia and it's attempt to lead the struggle for german liberation from the Napoleonic yoke, after Napoleon's disastrous failure in Russia gave his enemy's an opening they never thought would occur. His hero is Gerhard Scharnhorst the architect of the rebuilt Prussian army after the disaster of 1806. Scharnhorst was instrumental in cementing the alliance with Russia that was essential if Prussian was going to have an opportunity to defeat Napoleon.Despite it's focus on Prussia and german liberation Napoleon is given his due and almost equal time. This book is indeed an interesting addition to study of this campaign but not what I hoped would become the standard work on it. The book gets only four stars from me because it comes up short on the military end.For example one of the standard components of most military history's are a couple of chapters comparing the opposing forces early on. This book dispenses with that, which is rather shocking since both sides had to rebuild their armies from scratch. Napoleon lost his grand army in Russia and had to totally rebuild it in the early months of the year. Prussia's army had to be rebuilt almost from scratch after the strictures put on it by Napoleon after the Treaty of Tilsit. None of this is covered in the book. A word also must be said about the books maps, first on the positive side. There are six maps bunched together in the books front. Normally this is a big no-no for me, but unlike other authors that do this Mr. Leggiere has a note in the text indicating to the reader which of the maps in the front he needs to refer to. These six maps are there because they are referred to throughout the text. There are also many other well done maps spread through the text. But this is the other area where Mr. Leggiere falls short by having the military aspects the bread rather than the meat. The two great battles of Lutzen and Bautzen are each covered with two maps apiece of an operational nature showing the whole battlefields. Mr. Leggiere provides a good operational account of these battles but more military oriented readers may like to see more tactical details. This is the first of three volumes on the 1813 campaign, forget what you hear about this being a two volume work as a note in the next volume indicates that a third volume will be necessary, but I will deal with that in my review of the next volume.By the way this is not the first book published on the spring campaign this year. Earlier this year James Arnold privately published a book on the same campaign. Though covering the same subject the two books actually complement each other. Being a traditional military historian Mr. Arnold deals in more detail with the military stuff than does Mr. Leggiere. As that book is not listed on Amazon's sight I will not go into more detail on it until it appears. Mr. Leggiere has still written a very good account of this campaign. If not the last word it will do until such a book arrives.

Prussia rising By Robbo This a review of both volumes of Michael Leggiere's work.Marketed as the first comprehensive history of the 1813 campaign in Germany, these volumes certainly live up to that claim. Leggiere, a professor of history at the University of North Texas has presented us with the most detailed account of that campaign yet written in English: one which is unlikely to be bettered in its depth of study, and is likely to become the standard work on the subject. The sub-title, the Franco-Prussian War of 1813, is somewhat misleading as these volumes describe the campaign of the Sixth Coalition against Napoleon in Germany during 1813, and in which Prussia depended heavily on the support of initially the Russian Army, and after the armistice of June to August, the intervention of Austria on the side of Russia and Prussia. In reality Prussia was a junior partner, although, as Leggiere suggests, the Prussians were the more energetic of the four allies, and it was Blucher’s manoeuvre that enabled the coalition to concentrate against and defeat Napoleon at Leipzig, the beginning of the end for the French emperor.Highly readable and extensive in its scope, and while addressing the contribution of each nation and all of the armies involved this history has a distinctly Prussian flavour. Although Leggiere provides us with an holistic study of the campaign in which he takes us into the minds and actions of all the participants, he emphasises the role of the Prussians and their desire for liberation from the French yoke, a view made evident in the Introduction and Chapters 1 and 2 of Volume 1. There we are led through the politics and machinations of the Prussian dilemma from the catastrophic defeat of 1806 to when they eventually joined the Russians in the war against Napoleon in March 1813. One has some sympathy for the Prussian king, Frederick William, as he sought to maintain the existence of his country in the face of dissent advocating a popular uprising that had little chance of success, calls for a treaty with Russia, and threats from Napoleon whose troops garrisoned the key forts throughout the country. The campaign is divided into two volumes. The first, and smaller, deals with the spring campaign to June 1813, when the Russian and Prussian forces were in retreat only to be reprieved by the Austrian initiated armistice, which makes a convenient break in the story. The second volume, and twice the length of the first, continues the story with the Austrian intervention on the side of the Allies and the autumn battles that led to Napoleon’s defeat at Leipzig and his retreat to the French frontier. In writing them Legiere has made a substantial and important contribution to our understanding of the events, both military and political, that resulted in the expulsion of the ‘Little Corporal’ from central Europe.Employing a wide range of sources from all participants, and liberally scattered with extensive quotes, these thoroughly researched volumes provide a detailed and keen insight into both the complex and internally divided alliance, that nonetheless stuck together, and the manoeuvres and battles employing what Leggiere defines as ‘ the guiding principles that fundamentally helped destroy Napoleon’s empire: the ruthless application of all forces to a single objective, the interplay of the individual armies, the strategic utilisation of cavalry, and the exploitation of victory through pursuit.’ This is a magisterial work that takes us into the minds of the guiding hands of the coalition and the generals and senior staff officers, such that we gain an insight into their thinking and explains why certain decisions, actions or manoeuvres were taken, as we follow the armies on their marches and counter-marches, and through all the battles and skirmishes that were waged, not just the main events. The detail is breathtaking, but not to the extent of certain works that get down into the weeds of recalling the actions of individual regiments, battalions and companies. Rather it is set largely at the strategic and operational level that allows the reader to understand the whole campaign politically and militarily, the interactions of the various armies, corps and divisions on both sides, why the campaign played out as it did, and delves into the tactical level when describing the battles in a vivid and clear manner. His political and operational analysis is balanced and instructive, and Leggiere wraps up each volume with a conclusion or ‘Assessment‘ that are models of their kind, tying together and evaluating the events covered in the previous chapters. As a serious campaign study, Napoleon and the Struggle for Germany provides a benchmark for others to emulate. The only criticism is with the maps. They do not adequately support this monumental piece of work, and if one is to follow Legiere’s fascinating narrative the reader would be wise to invest in one of those large book of road maps of central Europe, such as printed by Phillips, or at least a large scale map. Volume 1 is especially poor in this regard, and while Volume 2 has a better range and scale of maps they are too infrequent to follow many of the manoeuvres that frustrated Napoleon. On the other hand the notes at the end of each chapter are extensive, citing not only the sources but adding additional and interesting information on the topic under discussion. These volumes may not appeal to the general reader, but they will be appreciated by those with a strong interest in the Napoleonic Wars, or those undertaking research They are a rich source of information, and offer a valuable perspective on the campaign based on sound archival research and analysis.

It was informative and well written. The book provided insight into the 1813 campaign that I felt had been overlooked in other books. It provides an excellent analysis of the first half the 1813 campaign.Second, and the reason I don't give it 5 stars, is the book is written from a Prussian perspective. The French are barely discussed until page 122 (of the kindle version).I was hoping for a little more discussion of the rebuilding of the French army, but the author focused on the creation of the Coalition armies almost exclusively.I felt the title was a little misleading and that it more properly should have been named "The Prussian struggle for Germany".Nevertheless, I would highly recommend the book.

The U.S. government's power to categorize individuals as terrorist suspects and therefore ineligible for certain long-standing constitutional protections has expanded exponentially since 9/11, all the while remaining resistant to oversight. Crimes of Terror: The Legal and Political Implications of Federal Terrorism Prosecutions provides a comprehensive and uniquely up-to-date dissection of the government's advantages over suspects in criminal prosecutions of terrorism, which are driven by a preventive mindset that purports to stop plots before they can come to fruition. It establishes the background for these controversial policies and practices and then demonstrates how they have impeded the normal goals of criminal prosecution, even in light of a competing military tribunal model. Proceeding in a linear manner from the investigatory stage of a prosecution on through to sentencing, the book documents the emergence of a "terrorist exceptionalism" to normal rules of criminal law and procedure and questions whether the government has overstated the threat posed by the individuals it charges with these crimes. Included is a discussion of the large-scale spying and use of informants rooted in the questionable "radicalization" theory; the material support statute--the government's chief legal tool in bringing criminal prosecutions; the new rules regarding generation of evidence and the broad construction of that evidence as relevant at trial; and a look at the special sentencing and confinement regimes for those convicted of terrorist crimes. In this critical examination of terrorism prosecutions in federal court, Professor Said reveals a phenomenon at odds with basic constitutional protections for criminal defendants.

Crimes of Terror: The Legal and Political Implications of Federal Terrorism Prosecutions, by Wadie E. Said

Review "Professor Said has written an enormously important book on terrorism prosecutions and how they are changing the fundamentals of our criminal justice system. Written with the experience of a criminal defense lawyer who has handled these cases, Professor Said examines each stage of a terrorism prosecution and how it abandons the usual rules for criminal cases. This must-read book is deeply disturbing as he shows how these prosecutions have had a devastating effect on Muslim Americans and their ability to be politically engaged." -Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law, Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law, University of California, Irvine School of Law

"The war on terror has been waged not only on the battlefield, but in domestic criminal prosecutions, where the tools are not drones or infrared goggles, but sweeping laws making it a crime to provide 'material support' to blacklisted groups, and where the prosecution can rely on informants who entrap vulnerable young men into agreeing to commit manufactured crimes. Professor Said's book documents the sacrifices to due process and fundamental fairness that criminal prosecution of 'terrorists' has already wrought, and eloquently warns against further eviscerations of those principles." -David Cole, Hon. George J. Mitchell Professor in Law and Public Policy, Georgetown University Law Center

"Crimes of Terror begins with this question: If the government charged you with being a terrorist, would you rather face criminal charges in a federal court or be tried before a military commission? Read this book to be educated in how the 'war on terror' has compromised rights of the accused in a federal court and, more so, how it threatens to radically change our concept of a free society and the right to be politically or religiously engaged." -Mahmood Mamdani, Herbert Lehman Professor of Government, Columbia University

"Since 9/11, the U.S. government has pursued extraordinary legal (as well as extralegal) efforts to combat terrorism, and in doing so has expanded the 'terrorist' label far beyond its previous connotations. Said argues that measures taken by the courts have created an effective 'terrorist exception' to previously existing legal standards. Crimes of Terror examines the way in which this exception has altered normal law enforcement and judicial practices at every stage of the legal cycle, from initial investigation and evidence gathering, to trial, and finally to sentencing and incarceration. Crimes of Terror documents what Said says is a willful, ongoing effort by the government to blur the line between peaceful activism and terrorism, wherein people advocating for unpopular political causes are treated by the legal system in the same manner as those accused of committing violent acts."- Murtaza Hussain, The Intercept

While we may well be proud of our legal system, the principles on which it is constructed, and the legal infrastructure that has supported the expansion of civil rights, we have the responsibility to continue, as citizens, to oversee it and be sure it continues to strive towards those aspirational principles. This book, in a straightforward, clear, and direct manner, details how the so-called "war on terror" has led to, and at times been used to justify, a set of exceptions and procedures that are not only counter to--but in direct opposition to--the principles on which the system was built. The book brings together many disturbing incidents and reports that should have already raised red flags. Americans should consider thoughtfully the risks posed by the implementation of exceptions and procedures that threaten the core principles of the American legal system. It is hard for me to imagine that any concerned citizen who is informed and aware of these changes could stand by and accept them without protesting. Taken seriously, the content of this book goes to the core of who we are and the principles we choose to live by.

Virus as Populations: Composition, Complexity, Dynamics, and Biological Implications explains fundamental concepts that arise from regarding viruses as complex populations when replicating in infected hosts. Fundamental phenomena in virus behavior, such as adaptation to changing environments, capacity to produce disease, probability to be transmitted or response to treatment, depend on virus population numbers and in the variations of such population numbers. Concepts such as quasispecies dynamics, mutations rates, viral fitness, the effect of bottleneck events, population numbers in virus transmission and disease emergence, new antiviral strategies such as lethal mutagenesis, and extensions of population heterogeneity to nonviral systems are included. These main concepts of the book are framed in recent observations on general virus diversity derived from metagenomic studies, and current views on the origin of viruses and the role of viruses in the evolution of the biosphere.

  • Features current views on the key steps in the origin of life and origins of viruses
  • Includes examples relating ancestral features of viruses with their current adaptive capacity
  • Explains complex phenomena in an organized and coherent fashion that is easy to comprehend and enjoyable to read
  • Considers quasispecies as a framework to understand virus adaptability and disease processes

Top-down synthesis of the population genetics of viruses: a book I've been looking for By Mike F On first impression, I think this is an excellent and necessary book. The author lays out a clear picture of virology as population genetics, and in doing so, he places into a coherent theoretical framework much of the modern understanding of how molecular variation, competition, and selection within a single replicating population determines phenotype. The top-down perspective is a nice contrast to books that are more focused on dissecting microbiological details. The many and well-cited facts from many model viruses fit together to either clarify what is known or highlight what is not yet understood. The highlight for me is Chapter 5, "Viral Fitness as a Measure of Adaptation", which focuses on the idea of fitness: how there are different concepts of fitness that operate in different ways in different host systems and that the concept of fitness one measures needs to carefully matched to the concept of fitness one wants to understand. My only complaint is it needs more equations. The clear writing about concepts such as effective population size, selection coefficients, error catastrophe, and quasispecies is very welcome, but these ideas are most precisely expressed in mathematics. If the well-written words were accompanied by some tightly demonstrated math, the book would be even more edifying. Second edition?

Excerpt from The Microscope: Being the Article by Andrew RossMicroscope, the name of an instrument for enabling the eye to see distinctly objects which are placed at a very short distance from it, or to see magnified images of small objects, and therefore to see smaller objects than would otherwise to be visible. The name is derived from the two Greek words, expressing this property, Mikros, small, and Skopeo, to see. So little is known of the early history of the microscope, and so certain is it that the magnifying power of lenses must have been discovered as soon as lenses were made, that there is no reason for hazarding any doubtful speculations on the question of discovery. We shall proceed therefore at once to describe the simplest forms of microscopes, to explain their later and more important improvements, and finally to exhibit the instrument in its present perfect state. In doing this we shall assume that the reader is familiar with the information contained in the articles "Light." "Lens," "Achromatic," "Aberration," and the other sub-divisions of the science of Optics, which are treated of in this work. The use of the term magnifying has led many into a misconception of the nature of the effect produced by convex lenses.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In The Double Life of Fidel Castro, one of Castro's soldiers of 17 years breaks his silence and shares his memoir of years of service, and eventual imprisonment and torture for displeasing the notorious dictator, and his dramatic escape from Cuba.

Responsible for protecting the Lider maximo for two decades, Juan Reinaldo Sánchez was party to his secret life – because everything around Castro was hidden. From the ghost town in which guerrillas from several continents were trained, to his immense personal fortune – including a huge property portfolio, a secret paradise island, and seizure of public money – as well as his relationship with his family and his nine children from five different partners.

Sanchez's tell-all expose reveals countless state secrets and the many sides of the Cuban monarch: genius war leader in Nicaragua and Angola, paranoid autocrat at home, master spy, Machiavellian diplomat, and accomplice to drug traffickers. This extraordinary testimony makes us re-examine everything we thought we knew about the Cuban story and Fidel Castro Ruz.

The Double Life of Fidel Castro: My 17 Years as Personal Bodyguard to El Lider Maximo, by Juan Reinaldo Sanchez, Axel Gyldén

Review "Sánchez's nonstop revelations, energetic voice, and cognitive dissonance are liable to entertain and intrigue almost any audience."―Library Journal

About the Author Lieutenant Colonel Juan Reinaldo Sanchez was Fidel Castro's personal bodyguard for 17 years before being imprisoned in 1994 for the "crime" of wanting to retire early. He left Cuba in 2008 after ten unsuccessful bids to escape. He wrote The Double Life of Fidel Castro with Axel Gyldén, star French reporter at L'Express. Sanchez now lives in Miami with his family.

42 of 43 people found the following review helpful. he finds himself wondering if communism really is superior to capitalism By Leslie N. Patino The crux of Juan Reinaldo Sánchez’ book, for me, comes half way through when he describes accompanying Fidel Castro to Moscow for Leonid Brezhnev’s funeral. There, after 65 years of communism, he witnesses even more hardship than in Havana. For the first time ever, he finds himself wondering if communism really is superior to capitalism.Four weeks ago, I flew home from my first trip to Cuba. My impression of the eight days with a group of Americans is that we were shown a carefully crafted image of the country. I speak fluent Spanish and have lived and traveled in Latin America for four decades. Even so, I was able only on a few occasions to scratch the surface of that image. The overwhelming question in my mind, for which I have no convincing answer, is that, seeing the results of 56 years of “revolutionary sacrifice,” how can anyone believe that communism/socialism is superior to capitalism? While some readers may say that much of what Sánchez describes has been reported by others, this is his unique version. Sánchez comes across as an exceptionally intelligent, educated and accomplished man, yet he's quick to admit that for many years he would have readily given his life for Fidel Castro. As he tells the story, Castro didn’t hesitate to have Sánchez thrown in prison when he asked to retire, accusing him of plotting to defect. The chapters on his imprisonment and his harrowing escape from Cuba after twelve years of failed attempts had me glued to the final pages of this intriguing book.

Here is a highly intelligent man who let himself be trapped into the evils of Fidel Castro and his communist life, except that Castro did not live a communist life, he lived like a wealthy magnate with all the trappings of the rich, but he hid it from everyone except his closest comrades. What a charade, everyone is poor and deprived by communism/socialism except the people in the higher echelons of power.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Compelling and insightful. By C. Alfonso This book was surprisingly justifying to me why the US kept the embargo in place all those years and how spiteful Cuba's leadership was to their own people and to other democracies. It's a shame they have now got legitimacy as it's obvious it's o government that can't be trusted. Compelling read! Insight into the psychopathic minds of a leadership that stole a country a got away with it. I hope this opens some eyes around the world.
