(And the book provides a wealth of beautiful illustrations/photos. ) By trevornewland This book contains a wealth of information and Charney, with his thorough knowledge of art history and contemporary criminal activity related to art theft/forgery, delivers quite a riveting read. The book explores an ecclectic mix of rascals who are more interesting than less quirky fictional characters one might find in a fictional film or novel. Time well spent. (And the book provides a wealth of beautiful illustrations/photos.)

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. ample motivations for the revenge of the forgers By RPF The layout of the book is unconventional, but the material itself is fascinating. This, like the recent movie "Big Eyes" and the works of contemporary artists like Banksy and Koons stimulates the age-old debate of what art "is". Aristotle's definition (pg. 108) seems amazingly accurate over 2,000 years later. Because so much is covered in such a brief manner, it certainly will lead me to more detailed books and primary sources amply provided in Charney's "Selected Bibliography." I find the effects of mass psychology (the willingness to be fooled that greed begets), institutional jealousies, the arrogance of the "connoisseur" class, and the exclusivity of gallerists - all fascinating - and all ample motivation for the revenge of the forgers.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The best book of its kind By Jay Dillon Having unmasked a few forgeries myself, and having read deeply and widely on the subject for years, I can say flatly that this is the best book of its kind: It’s an outstanding survey of a difficult field rich with subtleties, enlivened by numerous case-studies remarkable for their concise presentation, all arranged in a sensible, thematic way with discussion, conclusions, and adequate notes. Moreover it’s eminently readable: I read it in a day; I could hardly put it down, and now I’m reading again. My only wish is that Charney had given more space or emphasis to the ways in which forgeries harm *everybody* — not just by cheating rich buyers and their agents, not just by ruining a few reputations, nor even by distorting whole markets, but really by polluting our common culture in general, by messing with objective truth. Some attention, too, might have been paid to the ways in which mathematical probability — or at least the impression of it — can unmask forgeries: How likely is it, for example, that three examples of a signature, or three drawings ‘by’ a given artist, will appear on the market within a few years of one another, when none had been seen for a generation before? There must be examples of such cases, and it would be good to see them. The Wise forgeries come to mind..

Excerpt from A Primer of QuaternionsThe Theory of Quaternions is due to Sir William Rowan Hamilton, Royal Astronomer of Ireland, who presented his first paper on the subject to the Royal Irish Academy in 1843. His Lectures on Quaternions were published in 1853, and his Elements, in 1866, shortly after his death. The Elements of Quaternions by Tait is the accepted text-book for advanced students. The following development of the theory is prepared for average students with a thorough knowledge of the elements of algebra and geometry, and is believed to be a simple and elementary treatment founded directly upon the fundamental ideas of the subject. This theory is applied in the more advanced examples to develop the principal formulas of trigonometry and solid analytical geometry, and the general properties and classification of surfaces of second order.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By maurice This is a late (1890s) perspective on quaternions from the point of view of anAmerican professor of engineering in the Midwest, teaching to an audience ofbeginners at the freshman or sophomore undergraduate level. The result isa solid foundation that benefits from plenty of classroom exposure and thedecades of experience of earlier expositors, not to mention illustrations thatwere scarce in earlier authors who gravitated to the algebraic approachmoreso than the geometric approach to quaternions.

Library work is really all about people. And the inclusive, welcoming nature of the library means that all kinds of people pass through its doors. Not all difficult patrons are dangerous, but some frighten staff and other library users, which can lead to situations that are distracting, troubling, and fraught with liability. For more than a decade, Albrecht, a 15-year police veteran, has presented workshops for libraries on dealing with challenging patrons. His no-nonsense advice will empower library staff in their personal security and give them the tools to confidently communicate with their colleagues, patrons, and members of law enforcement regarding inappropriate behavior. In this book he addresses security issues important to all libraries, including

  • Specific guidance for common situations, such as unruly teens, unwanted sexual advances, chronically homeless substance abusers, and more
  • The elements of an effective Code of Conduct and how to enforce it
  • Tips on how to manage internet usage to minimize potential problems
  • How to align with patrons and use language that defuses the conflict
  • Forming partnerships with service organizations, homeless shelters, mental health advocacy groups, and other community resources
  • How to know when it s time to call the police, plus ideas for increasing law enforcement support
  • Ways to make the library more secure through changes to facilities
Through the methods outlined in this book, Albrecht demonstrates that effective communication not only makes library users feel more comfortable but also increases staff morale, ensuring the library is place where everyone feels welcome.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. common sense reminders for library staff By Jane Easterly This short book is recommended reading for anyone who works in a library visited by the public. The author, a former cop, knows his stuff.I did not agree with everything he had to say ("You thought this job was about the great books, history on the page, and having the time to review the periodicals and publications that interest you" (p. 1) - uh, no, I didn't) but he said a lot that made sense ("while we can't control people's behaviors, we can control our perception of them, our responses to them, and, ultimately, our treatment of them" (p. 5)).He acknowledges that every library and situation is different and that many factors come into play. He says things like "There is no perfect answer for whether you should or should not talk to a patron" (p. 8) and encourages you to trust yourself and your instincts. He stresses being “firm, fair, consistent, and assertive,” which is a good checklist to live and work by. He reminds us to ask, "Am I being reasonable in response to this patron's behavior?" He notes, "You can turn a cooperative person into a screaming maniac by being condescending, rude, or officious with him or her." (p. 11)This book is filled with lots of good common sense reminders. It also contains practical advice and a library employee security survey to help directors get a handle on security in their libraries. It would make a good discussion book for library staff. I’m glad I read it.

The major additions since the second edition of 2006 are nearly 500 articles on landscape architecture by Dr. Susan Wilson (now acknowledged as co-author) and the restoration of the Bibliography from the first edition, expanded to over 3000 entries. The result is a book at the comfortable limit of the readable (as opposed to the merely consultable), with Curl’s familiar clarity of description, exquisite line and stipple drawings, and defense of architecture as a sacred trust for the humans who are obliged to inhabit it.Like any good Dictionary, this one draws the reader into random and potentially endless wandering. For instance, I was intrigued by mention on the front flap of a ‘battle garden’, and discovered that one Irish example was made as “a talisman to keep the Turks at bay: it succeeded.” A reference there to ‘horn-work’ educated me on the difference between cat’s ear, lion’s ear, dog’s ear, and ass’s ear horns. A glimpse of nearby Victor Horta had me flipping back to Art Nouveau and Art Deco, with a radiant drawing of the Hoover Factory entrance; to Artisan Mannerism (“which some commentators have found refreshing and others distressing”) and so on to Mannerism, by way of a long detour on Charles Rennie Mackintosh.Professor Curl’s once unfashionable, anti-Modernist stance is now almost mainstream, as many would agree with his devastating understatement on Walter Gropius: “the environments created as a result of his influence have not proved to be either agreeable or functional.” While this edition excludes entries on living architects, Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind and their kind get their come-uppance under ‘Deconstructivism or Deconstructionism’. However, such judgments are embedded in information as copious and impartial as one could wish. There are also new friends, for instance in the much-expanded article on ‘New Classicism’. My only regret is that there are no entries on buildings (except the Pantheon). Should I want to know who were the architects of the Empire State Building or Schloss Neuschwanstein, I would have to look on the Internet, which threatens to make all paper reference works redundant. This Dictionary more than justifies its medium, for beside the obvious advantage that one can trust all its facts, dates, and sources, it has the feeling of a real communication from mind to mind.

Dr. Weitz's thorough discussions of health and medicine emphasize the effects of power and how social forces create illness, affect our ideas about the meaning of illness and disability, structure health care institutions, and impact the work and social position of health care workers. The Sociology of Health, Illness, and Health Care: A Critical Approach, by Rose Weitz

Review "Weitz skillfully writes in a way that will reach students of many disciplines and levels. This is perhaps the most comprehensive and well-written text that I have reviewed. I envision the content and presentation to be relevant for students majoring in Sociology, Public Health, Nursing and Health Sciences, as well as helping professions such as Social Work.""[This book] continues to be a comprehensive review of the health care system, especially the changes that often overwhelm and contribute to the health care crisis in the United States. The updated additions … help students become informed on relevant issues that impact their future lives and an ever-changing health status of world populations. I would highly recommend this text to anyone searching for an accessible and authoritative text on the sociology of health and illness."

I really like it and I decided not to sell the book at the end of the semester. It's a medium sized book, not too heavy and big. I like the topics presented in this book and how they affect society's health as a whole. The book also make me think about things that I don't think are even a problem. For instance, the medicalization of childbirth or assisted reproduction.

I rented this book because it is required for the sociology class I'm taking this semester and I must say, there are many grammatical/spelling errors in this book! I wonder if she got this book peer reviewed? Was it read by an editor? Shocking! Otherwise, it's easy to understand, so that's a plus.
