What do a rapper, a returned soldier, a reformed gangster, a grandmother, a petroleum geologist, a bestselling author, and a microchip engineer have in common? They are all wresting control of food from an industrial system responsible for a plague of poor personal and planetary health. In his landmark work, Grow: Stories from the Urban Food Movement, Stephen Grace embarks on a journey of discovery to understand what motivates these urbanites working to reinvent the way we feed ourselves.

From the driver of a repurposed garbage truck healing the soil to a guerrilla gardener bombing the city with seeds, a cast of extraordinary characters emerges as Grace makes his way into the heart of a revolution. He discovers that food can be a means to tackle some of our most pressing problems, from youth crime to the healthcare crisis, from resource depletion to climate change. Instead of succumbing to despair over global challenges, the citizens of Denver profiled in Grow find the creativity and fortitude to begin rebuilding the food system in their own backyard. This shift in the Mile High City is a microcosm of a movement redefining our relationships with farming and food-and with each other. Grow is concerned with what we put on our plates, but its true subject is the stories we tell as we struggle to repair our severed connections to nature and our fellow citizens.

In the tradition of great travel writing, Grow encounters worlds as diverse as permaculture and hip-hop with expansive curiosity and irresistible humor. Whether joining a crop mob or collecting compostable waste in an alley, whether foraging for cactus or seeking refuge in a café founded on compassion, Grace illuminates moments of growth as he explores the hardest parts of the city.

"Grace gives us the stories of those on the ground and in the dirt and thereby gives us all hope and know-how. I absolutely loved this book. A must-read-for everyone." -Laura Pritchett, author of Stars Go Blue

"Grow is gorgeously written and a true pleasure to read. Grace is a lovely writer and here he puts his mastery to the highest purpose-changing the way we live so that we can take care of our planet." -Helen Thorpe, author of Just Like Us and Soldier Girls

"Stephen Grace has written with passion, wisdom, and-yes-grace about the backstory of the food on our plates, and about the people in Denver who are working to bring that story closer to home..." -Nick Arvin, author of The Reconstructionist

"Stephen Grace serves up generous helpings of nutrient-dense stories of farmers and farming in the gritty urban tangle of a sprawling metropolis, revealing a hidden revolution with the power to quietly heal lives and communities...." -Michael Brownlee, Publisher, Local Food Shift magazine

"A highly engaged and engaging conversation, a compassionate conversation, with the foragers, restaurateurs, vintners, waste farmers and community gardeners who are building the soil of a restorative economy." -Woody Tasch, Founder and Chairman of Slow Money

"Years from now, people will read this book by Stephen Grace and think, 'That's how we did it! That's how people in cities figured out how to feed themselves instead of relying on food trucked in from thousands of miles away!'" -Kristin Ohlson, author of The Soil Will Save Us

Grow: Stories from the Urban Food Movement, by Stephen Grace

Review "Grow is gorgeously written and a true pleasure to read. Grace is a lovely writer and here he puts his mastery to the highest purpose--changing the way we live so that we can take care of our planet."--Helen Thorpe, author of Just Like Us and Soldier Girls "If you are a person who eats food, this is a book you need to read. Stephen Grace has written with passion, wisdom, and--yes--grace about the backstory of the food on our plates, and about the people in Denver who are working to bring that story closer to home. Ultimately, Grow opens the possibility that simply asking about the story of our food can be a catalyst for saving us from ourselves, and that's a story we need to hear."--Nick Arvin, author of The Reconstructionist and Articles of War "A captivating and original book. While it offers a serious look into the urban food movement, the stories here are funny, inspiring, and, above all else, offer unique and do-able solutions. Grow is the rarest of gems: Grace gives us the stories of those on-the-ground and in-the-dirt and thereby gives us all hope and know-how. I absolutely loved this book. A must-read--for everyone." --Laura Pritchett, editor of Going Green and author of Stars Go Blue "In Grow, Stephen Grace serves up generous helpings of nutrient-dense stories of farmers and farming in the gritty urban tangle of a sprawling metropolis, revealing a hidden revolution with the power to quietly heal lives and communities. Drawn by a common urge to rebuild food security and sovereignty, the unsung pioneers that Grace discovers arise from broken communities to forge a regenerative local economy that is steadily and unexpectedly transforming fractured landscapes. The book emerged from Grace's attempt to find the bounty available in his own backyard ("so many tasty foods, so many fascinating people"). As writing it did for the author, reading Grow fires our imagination, inspires hope, and compels us to join the local food revolution and experience the joys of 'living deeply' in our cities."--Michael Brownlee, Publisher, Local Food Shift Magazine  "This book is full of gems mined from the . . . wait a minute: Can a book about urban farming have gems and mining?  Oh, yes, and Stephen Grace shows us how. One of my favorites is, 'Beware the everyday brutality of the averted gaze,' from the folks at SAME Café, where diners pay what they can afford. This book is the opposite of an averted gaze. It is a highly engaged and engaging conversation, a compassionate conversation, with the foragers, restaurateurs, vintners, waste farmers and community gardeners who are building the soil of a restorative economy." --Woody Tasch, Founder and Chairman of Slow Money  "Years from now, people will read this book by Stephen Grace and think, 'That's how we did it! That's how people in cities figured out how to feed themselves instead of relying on food trucked in from thousands of miles away!' In Grow: Stories from the Urban Food Movement, Grace introduces us to the intrepid visionaries in Denver who are wielding the nuts and bolts of this transition. His book shows the obstacles, certainly, but also the hope that drives this movement, as well as suggesting ways the reader can participate."--Kristin Ohlson, author of The Soil Will Save Us

About the Author Stephen Grace is an accomplished author and historian, devoted to both Colorado's museums and its mountains. His novel, "Under Cottonwoods," was a Book Sense 76 selection. He lives in Boulder, Colorado.

By Aron Rosenthal Replace "Denver" and the description of its streets and neighborhoods with the name and description of the city where you live and you'll understand how this is a movement without borders. Carlos, Ash, Matthew the Soil Shaman, Kelly, Jimmy -- they exist in every city in the U.S. and they are doing work just as important as these guys are doing in Denver. Seek them out. Start another chapter of this grand story in your own yard and be liberated. Stephen Grace has done a great service to the urban food movement by telling this story and Grow has become as important a motivating factor to me as any book I have recently read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Both entertaining and informative! By La La in the Library Wow, not at all what I was expecting! This is a brilliant grouping of stories that are entertaining, heartwarming and insprational, as well as informative. It takes the reader on a journey from where our food begins, to what we can do to be more self reliant in feeding ourselves, even in urban settings. There is a backyard "farming" revolution going on in my city, from "dirtbag" gardening to backyard chickens. I am certainly going to make sure our indie bookstore and county library have this title front and center. I was approved for this title via Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. There’s something magical about comics. The unique blend of words and pictures to tell a story captures the imaginations of people of all ages, genders, and nationalities. No matter who you are, there are comics for you. No matter the style or substance, whether you read them online, make weekly pilgrimages to the comics store, or thumb across the brightly colored spines of the comics at your local library, sequential art draws you into its world. Call them manga, call them webcomics, call them whatever you like—comics are comics wherever you go. We were children when comics got their hooks in us—Adam at six years old, Comfort closer to thirteen. Our eyes were opened to something so new, so different; we changed as human beings. We wanted to be storytellers. We wanted to create new worlds, new characters, to reflect our experiences, hopes, fears, dreams, and ideals. We wanted to draw, we wanted to write; we wanted to make comics. Maybe you have a similar story. Many do; it’s one of the magical things about comics. Many love music, few start to play. Many love movies, few become actors. But so many people who love American comics, manga, or webcomics start thinking up stories of their own, even if only for a little while. Comics inspire us to imagine, and that is one of the most wonderful things a medium can do. Imagination is among the greatest powers we humans possess, and comics encourage this thoughtful daydreaming as good, or better, than anything else. We wrote this book because we felt we had to. Knowledge must be passed on. Passion must be shared freely. We feel that the spark that a great comic ignites in people to create stories of their own should be fanned into a flame. Now is the time! Be not afraid of the perils of striking out on your own. This is the golden age of the self-publisher. It has never been easier, cheaper, or more convenient to make comics, publish comics, and build an audience. What This Book Will Do We have self-published comics since 2008. Each of us has been teaching comics since 2002, and we travel the country presenting panel discussions and seminars on making American comics, manga, and webcomics. We both write, we both draw, we both color, we both letter—we do everything but physically print the books. We want to share what we’ve learned and hopefully help people avoid some of the mistakes we made when we started out. This book is the ultimate “nondenominational” guide to making comics. Whether you love American comics, Japanese manga, or webcomics, this book is for you. We’ll mostly refer to them all as “comics” going forward—as a blanket term to cover all the different formats and styles. In the pages ahead, we’ll address some of the finer points for each style, and we’ll also include sidebars from some of the most talented professionals in each field to support those points. Pay attention to all of them! Just because a particular pro tip might come from a webcomics creator doesn’t mean it won’t apply to your manga. We think all kinds of comics creators can learn from one another—American artists and writers have been influenced by manga for decades, and Japanese creators have been doing the same with Western art and storytelling styles since Walt Disney started making cartoons. And webcomics? Welcome to the future, kiddies—in no time at all, everything is going to be a webcomic. The digital age has permanently changed the way comics are being made and read, and it must be a part of your strategy from now on. We will teach you how to take the skills you have and go from somebody who talks about making a comic someday to somebody who publishes comics right now. This book is for those hobbyists ready to go pro who still think they need a big fancy publisher’s permission to do so. Stop waiting for permission and start making comics! Your time is now; the only thing standing in your way is YOU. What This Book Can’t Do This book isn’t about how to draw or how to write—there are a lot of good books out there on those topics. A few of those titles are truly exceptional. If you don’t know how to write, we can’t change that. But we will show you how to refine a concept, turn it into a story, and then turn that story into a comics script. If you don’t know how to draw, this book isn’t going to change that. It will show you how to take your drawing skills and use them to draw better comics pages.  This book is about professionalism. It covers how to make a job out of your hobby, and it requires you to bring your own determination and hard work to bear. A lot of people out there just want to doodle around in their sketchbooks and get paid. That ain’t happening, buddy. Success goes to those who work hardest, work longest, and turn lucky breaks into career stepping stones. This book can’t show you an easy way to make comics because making comics isn’t easy. In some ways, it’s the hardest job you’ll ever do. But if you’re like us, if you’re somebody who has the heart and mind of a storyteller, then making comics can become the most rewarding job you’ll ever have. There will be challenges, and it will be disheartening at times. Maybe even miserable. But at the end of the journey, you’ll have created something only you could have made, and that matters. Make comics. C’mon—let’s get started. Comfort and Adam

Sparrow There are many books out there that will teach you certain aspects of how to create comics, or at the very least how to improve some aspect of the comics you're already making. There are very few that cover ALL aspects of comic creation in one volume, and almost none that do so with genuine useful advice and tips that will ultimately help you make the jump from dreamer to professional. I say "almost none" because that book has now arrived. I've been self-publishing for many years now, and while I know I don't know everything, I know a lot more now. It was great to see the aspects of comic-making I was doing "right" as well as learn how to improve in areas where I felt I was particularly weak. Whether you're a newcomer looking to dip your foot in the comic creation pool, an amateur who wants to continue to learn more, or even a seasoned professional still yearning to learn a new technique or three, this is the book you've been waiting for.Comfort and Adam have put a lot of work into this book, and while their solid background in independent publishing would be enough, they add in tips and advice from a number of noted comic book professionals. All in a book that's straightforward with you - this passion isn't for the timid - but if it's *your* passion, this book should be a welcome addition to your arsenal.

Your One-Stop Shop By Durough Yes, this is quite a departure from my usual genre of review, but when I found The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing Comics: How to Create and Sell Comics, Manga, and Webcomics by Comfort Love and Adam Withers was available, I was transported to a time in my childhood when I made magic. Well, at least I thought I made magic! There are a number of “how to” self-publishing books out there, but this one caught my eye. I haven’t really kept up with comics in quite a number of years, but I am familiar with some of the latest trends in publishing and marketing, especially given the way the boom in webcomics. So, I was really interested in what this comic-making, married couple had to offer. They did not disappoint! There is a boatload of information here for those who are interested in creating a comic for the first time, or for those who needs some pointers in an already well-developed process. They won’t tell you what to write, draw, or publish, but they sure give you enough of the “how” to set you on as smooth a path as possible with plenty of appropriate hazard signs along the way. Want to know what’s most important in a comic? They’ve got you covered? What should you research as a writer? How far ahead should you plan? Why should an artist know publishing dimensions? What’s so important about hue and saturation for a colorist? How do I create a flat color layer in Photoshop again? How many copies should I print in a first-run and how? Why can’t I be an angry, self-entitled curmudgeon at conventions? Yup, it’s all here. Big, glossy pages, pictures, examples, and a “Pro Tip” from a host of comic industry veterans on about every other page are all here to help you on your way to comic fame (or at least a load of frustrating fun and hard work)! And if you still want more, check out comfortandadam[dot]com for more self-publishing guides.I definitely recommend this guide for anyone seriously considering a life in comics.*I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

Story Over the last two decades, I’ve read scores of books on self-publishing and probably hundreds of books on creating comics. At one time, I read every book that came out on these subjects, from the fantastic to the not-so-good. I’ve kept many of these books, but I’ve also moved a lot of them out of my hands via Half-Priced Books. This book, The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing Comics by Comfort Love and Adam Withers, is the most on-point, relevant, honest, and useful guide of its type I have ever read. Love and Withers are real comic convention warriors and long-time self-publishers, so I would say their credentials are rock solid.I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Comfort Love and Adam Withers a few times at comic conventions, and I came away with the impression that they are lovely people. They seem truly devoted to making comics, and they have sacrificed a lot over the years to pursue their dream. The sacrifice, and the need to live a frugal life if you want to pursue comics as a full-time profession, is alluded to several times in this book. This is not a how to draw book, nor even a really a book about writing comics. Instead, it details the process of making professional comics, and how to market, distribute, and promote them. The writers even cover how to best set up a table at a comic convention, how to best use social media, and how to network at conventions. They also include sidebars written by dozens of well-known indie (and a few mainstream pro) cartoonists. It’s a dizzying amount of detail, but that is what is required for a huge subject like this. The only problem with this book, as I see it, is its long-term relevance. Right now, this is an indispensable book with excellent advice. The small press publishing world changes continually and with alarming rapidity, however, so some of the advice is bound to age out over time. That is not fault of Love and Withers, of course—we can only hope that new editions of the book are put out as things change. If they do publish new editions, I’ll be first in line to buy them.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive, yet easy to follow By Heather I've always been interested in programming, so I enjoy collecting books on the subject. Granted, I've learned not to expect too much when it comes to the free/low priced books, which was what made this one such a nice surprise. The structure is excellent, the exercises fully explained and easy to understand, whether you're an absolute novice or someone who's trying to brush up on prior knowledge. Learning a new programming language always seems like a daunting task, but this book stays true to what it advertises: it really does help you progress quickly, making it possible to learn C++ in a single day. Definitely one I'd recommend for any aspiring programmer, and I look forward to checking out other books by this author!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent By michael naylor C++ in 8 hours is a great book for anyone looking to learn C++ from scratch. I have never used any coding language before and I am an absolute beginner meaning a lot of material I have read before this was over my head. The book is clear, well-written and teaches you in an easy to follow way. The book delivers is promises and teaches you C++ in around 8 hours. I have now moved onto some of the more advanced books I had purchased but now I can understand them and I already know the basics.Overall a great book to get you started with C++. Easy to follow even for absolute beginners and delivers exactly what it promises on the cover.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Quality Information By Stacy Smith I couldn't recommend this book more. It's fantastic resource. I've studied C++ in classes and on my own with other resources, and this book is definitely one of the best, clearest resources for understanding the language. The information in the book is good, it is concise and easy to follow for beginners. Sometimes it is hard to follow some books but this one does a very good job of breaking the subjects down into chapters and building from chapter to chapter with clear explanations. I think that the author have a great deal of experience in C++ as well as making it very easy to apply. This is something just for anyone who is looking for a great step by step guide in C++ programming.

The Wicked Wit of Queen Elizabeth II is a celebration of the Queen's reign through some of her wittiest, most sarcastic and humorous observations, revealing a fascinating side of her personality that often remains hidden from the public.

When thinking of the Queen, our perception is often one of dignity and authority. She is seen as a serious figure: the British monarch, the Supreme Governor of the Church of England and the head of the Commonwealth. But as anyone who has ever met her will tell you, in person she has wicked sense of humour.

Occasionally unintentional, like asking guitar legend Eric Clapton, 'Have you been playing a long time?,' sometimes sarcastic, and at other times downright silly, royal humour touches on every aspect of life, while always retaining a strong sense of dignity.

If you are a fan of Her Majesty, you'll adore this book. I have almost every other book on her, and I still learned a couple new things from this book. It's light, funny and an easy read. I read it in about 4 hours. It's not a deep, long biography but a hilarious short read. Very very good, Highly recommended.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Diverting and Delightful By Currer Bell Witty and wonderful to read. I enjoyed this book, it was as simple as that. But I will endeavor to explain why. It's true that I read this mostly within 24 hours' time, but that was during two extended reading sessions. This is a book, not a pamphlet. Each story was rather brief so one could read from the book either during short breaks, or an extended session such as I chose. It is true that there are also anecdotes about other members of the British royal family; but that seems natural to me since clearly the Queen's family is part of her milieu. The stories are funny, charming, and give one a snapshot into the lives of a family who live unlike most other people on earth.I can't say I've enjoyed reading many of the books I've purchased; I can say they taught me something, exposed me to a new style, etc. In this case I can say that I was sorry to come to the last page, and that's as high a compliment as one can give any book.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. loved it By September loved it...very humorous and shows the witty side of the Queen. She has a way of dealing with situations that are not only funny but get the job done with as little fanfare as possible. I would recommend this book.

Written by a master of Hawaiian slack-key guitar, this text teaches the history, tunings, and other techniques found in slack-key guitar music. Because of the altered tunings in slack-key guitar music, all of the examples and exercises in this text have been written in tab only. Topics discussed are: right and left hand technique, alternating bass, slides, pull-offs, hammering, harmonics, and other slack-key related topics. Recordings of nine exercises from the book which demonstrates these techniques (with tunings) are provided on an accompanying audio. Beautiful black and white photos of native Hawaiian musicians are scattered throughout the text. Audio download available online.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Buy, Read, Play By Chris Payne This book is a wonderful introduction for anyone wishing to learn to play Hawaiian slack key. The music is in tabulature format and comes with tips for each song. Even a neophyte can be playing this melodic guitar music with just a bit of practice (you didn't think to avoid that did you?).Those unfamiliar with the genre may not realize what a true master Ozzie Kotani is and that this is the slack key equivalent of having Eric Clapton teach you a few licks. The only downside is the use of cassette instead of CD which would have made replay much easier. This book claims to be the first in a three book series and I hope the others will eventually be available.

Once I got the guitar tuned to slack key I could actually start playing the first song. It is hard to believe that nice music can be made by pressing down on just one string at a time. I hope he comes out with another book with more songs to learn.

Wonderful start to playing Hawaiian Slack Key style By finemc28@aol.com After working through all the songs in this book Inow have a set of beautiful and playable guitar pieces. Most are in G tuning and the progression from song to song is excellent. The left hand fingering details are very helpful.(30+ year fingerstyle guitar player)
