The Ultimate Survival Manual

23 Essential Skills You Absolutely MUST Learn To Survive In A Time Of Crisis

Whether it’s a flood, a power outage, an extended blizzard or tornado, or civil war in the streets below, there is a sort of inherent fascination with disaster – this fascination stems from both a latent fear of what might happen, and perhaps a subconscious desire and willingness to be ready for it if it should. Surviving a disaster is very complex and layered system of behaviors, expectations, preparation, and quick thinking. Many times the way in which a disaster is weathered depends on any of a hundred contingent factors, and being able to identify these and know how to act is the basis for a skillset that the majority of people have never developed. This book is designed to outline some of the more basic skills required to survive, command and flourish in the event of any emergency, and include tips on First Aid and medical procedures, the basics of hunting and weapons, and of course an outline on the sort of personal attributes that every survivalist should have – as well as strategies on how to train and improve on already existing skillsets. With a Friend by Your Side, by Barbara Kerley

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 3—Kerley explored the importance of water in A Cool Drink of Water (2002), parents and kids in You and Me Together (2005), and peace in A Little Peace (2007, all National Geographic). Now, in this oversize volume, excellent photographs of friends from around the world are paired with simple but touching text to demonstrate that all people need friends to care about. The photographs have a nice mix of young and old from places as close as Pennsylvania and California, to as far away as China and Jakarta. Back matter is included to extend the usefulness for older readers. There is a map showing where each of the photos was taken and captioned thumbnails of each photo. There is also a page with a short passage about the importance of being kind to all people and a brief note to parents and caregivers with some online resources for helping kids make friends, and how to handle bullying. A few well-known quotes about friendship add a final touch ("The only way to have a friend is to be one." Ralph Waldo Emerson). VERDICT The wonderful photography and gentle text make this a good choice to read aloud at the beginning of a discussion of friendship or to showcase what all humans have in common.—Laura Stanfield, Campbell County Public Library, Ft. Thomas, KY

Review "Gorgeous, vibrant photographs and simple, affirming text merge in this picture-book tribute to friendship…The photography’s diverse subjects and global settings attest that friends span ages, race, and gender, too.” — Hornbook"...Excellent photographs of friends from around the world are paired with simple but touching text to demonstrate that all people need friends to care about. VERDICT The wonderful photography and gentle text make this a good choice to read aloud at the beginning of a discussion of friendship or to showcase what all humans have in common.." -- School Library Journal"The text of this book talks about all friends can do and be. The photographs make it shine. Barbara Kerley catches the sparkle in the eyes of friends having fun together... This book is a work of art celebrating people – celebrating Friends." -- Sonderbooks Book Review .

Great multicultural friend book By August I had been looking for a good book for my toddler that explores people in all cultures and colors without suggestion (and with photos rather than drawings). I did not want a "we are different we are the same" kind of book because I didn't want her to wonder, why would anyone even think we're different (there must be something to that!)? So, I was looking for a book that showed lots of different people in lots of different backgrounds enjoying life. I found this one.My LO has grown out of "Global Babies" board book and is not yet old enough to enjoy "The Family of Man" which was a favorite of mine from about age 7 onwards (adults and children should definitely check it out!) So I tried this as an intermediary.LO is 22 months and while she enjoyed this book, I think it would be better for someone a little older or who at least is already in multi-child daycare or preschool. Most of the photos are of kids ages 7-13, a few seniors, a few dogs. On the other had, perhaps it helps introduce the concept of "friend." But, it very much had the feel I was going for in terms of a multicultural book. So, five stars for sending multiple good messages!I had checked this out from the library. We will renew it until I can find a book with kids more her age in it. Then, we will go back to this one when she is a bit older.

The best part of having and being a friend is having someone to share with. These pages are filled with wonderful photography. Author Barbara Kerley has always valued the importance of friendship. Readers will see first-hand by viewing the stunning images of what friends do together. Readers may even recognize similarities in some of the things they do and share with their friends or family. Short sentences put rhyme and focus to what readers will see, therefore connecting the vibrant photography to the meaning of friendship. For example, one image shows a young girl dressed in pink sharing an ice cream cone coated with sprinkles with a large white dog with black spots. Another image has three boys sliding down a muddy slide. The words turn the readers focus to friends being brave together. Another photo shows two girls sitting on the floor in the aisle at a library sharing a favorite book. There is lots to see and ponder.Author Barbara Kerley wants readers to see and feel what it means to have and be a friend no matter what you like to do. Sharing is caring and this heart felt view into the meaning of friendship would be a very important reminder or tool for any library.Courtesy of Media Masters Publicity

PDF Ebook Across Mongolian Plains: A Naturalist's Account of China's Great Northwest (Classic Reprint), by Roy Chapman Andrews

Excerpt from Across Mongolian Plains: A Naturalist's Account of China's Great NorthwestDuring 1916-1917 the First Asiatic Expedition of the American Museum of Natural History carried on zoological explorations along the frontiers of Tibet and Burma in the little known province of Yün-nan, China. The narrative of that ex edition has already been given to the public in the first book of this series "Camps and Trails in China." It was always the intention of the American Museum to continue the Asiatic investigations, and my presence in China on other work in 1918 gave the desired opportunity at the conclusion of the war.Having made extensive collections along the southeastern edge of the great central Asian plateau, it was especially desirable to obtain a representation of the fauna from the northeastern part in preparation for the great expedition which, I am glad to say, is now in course of preparation, and which will conduct work in various other branches of science. Consequently, my wife and I spent one of the most delightful years of our lives in Mongolia and North China on the Second Asiatic Expedition of the American Museum of Natural History. The present book is the narrative of our work and travels. As in "Camps and Trails" I have written it entirely from the sportsman's standpoint and have purposely avoided scientific details which would prove uninteresting or wearisome to the general public. Full reports of the expedition's results will appear in due course in the Museum's scientific publications and to them I would refer those readers who wish further details of the Mongolian fauna.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is also an excellent account of Mongolia prior to the Communist takeover in 1923. I can find no faults with the book as written by Andrews. However, my personal opinion of this edition is that it is not worth the money asked for it. It is a poorly made paperback, and the publisher has not reproduced any of the original photographs with the one exception being the frontis, which in my copy looks like a cheesy Xerox. This book is still available in the 1920's Blue Ribbon reprint, in hardback with photos for less than this "new" paperback. I am VERY dissapointed with this edition. Save your money and search out an original copy, you will find it far more satisfying. The first edition D. Appleton & Co. edition is still available as well.

Unique document on the Mongolian plains, zoology, ethnography in the 1920's By Magalini Sabina This edition is the anastatic copy of the original 1920's book. As all attempts of this kind it has its drawbacks, that in this case consist mostly of the absence of the photographs, that in the original edition were by Andrews' wife Yvette. This book is the abridged journal of what was successively known as the Second Asiatic Zoological Expedition of the American Museum of Natural History carried out in 1920 in Mongolia and parts of China. Roy Champman Andrews was a great explorer and comunicator and had already written two books one on whale hunting and another together with his wife of a previous expedition in China in 1916-17.After a brief introduction on the history of Mongolia and its political turmoils, the book is essentially a journal of a year of roaming through the rolling plains of Northwestern China and Mongolia, with the intent to hunt animals for the Museum's permanent exhibitions. The first journeys are by car, from which it is easier to shoot at the fast antelopes and wolves of the plains. After a stay in Urga (the modern Ulan Batar, capital city of modern Mongolia),that is maybe the book's most interesting part because of the description of the temples and cerimonies that do not exist anymore, Andrews and his wife decide to spend some time as the nomads do on horse back. They hunt marmots and enjoy the plains among the friendly nomads.Successively Andrews decides to visit the Northern Forest above Urga, but the hunting is to dangerous for his wife, that is left back. Together with Harry Caldwell they look for and savagely hunt roe buck, waipiti, argali, goral and whatever else moves. This book is obviously dated, and if a modern naturalist reads it the hair will surely stand strait on his head. The last chapters are really a slaughter house of some of the worlds most beautiful animals with the intent of conserving them for knowledge of the future generations. However, if read in the appropriate frame of mind it is a fantastic documentation of long ago ideals, mentality and facts, that are described with impartiality but absolutely no empathy differently to what will successively be done by for example Lattimore and others.Andrews reaches almost a poetic evocation when he describes landscape and colors, expecially that of the fur of the animals he kills. This book reminded me of the film "Dersu Uzala".A very interesting antiquarian read.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Ian Myles Slater on: A Period Piece By Ian M. Slater I have a copy of the 1921 Blue Ribbon "popular' edition (possibly an undated later reprinting) of "Across Mongolian Plains," and will not contribute to the debate on the quality of the paperback edition (see the two earlier reviews). I do think it is important to point out that the book belongs to the early twentieth century, and reflects its values. Readers should be prepared to make allowances for this, or not bother. Of course, those who pass it by will be missing some first-class storytelling.Andrews, who first came to the attention of scientists as a skilled taxidermist, shows his enthusiasm for turning live animals into specimens for mounting. Despite praise of individual Asian acquaintances, he falls into ethnic stereotypes whenever he deals with nations or groups for any length of time. Some of his judgements on foreign cultures must have seemed odd, even at the time. Maybe the decline of Lamaism would restore the "virility of the Mongol nation" -- whatever that means. But if it means anything, why would he find it so desirable? If Andrews didn't remember Genghis Khan, the Chinese and the Russians certainly did!Ironically, the expedition seems to have made both the first and last Western observations of some traditional Mongolian Buddhist religious observances, later swept away in the aftermath of Russian and Chinese revolutions.Anyone hoping for accounts of fossil-hunting in the Gobi Desert will also be in for an unpleasant surprise. That belonged to subsequent expeditions, in later years.Readers interested in the context of this and later Andrews expeditions will probably find Charles Gallenkamp's "Dragon Hunter: Roy Chapman Andrews and the Central Asiatic Expeditions" their most helpful guide.(Reposted from my "anonymous" review of September 10, 2003.)

The 2015 edition continues to be a really valuable resource on fine Italian wines. The book is organized by wine region roughly from northwest to southeast. Within each region there are what I'll call "main" listings and "other" listings. The main listings are the more prominent wineries. Each is a half-page with a background description whose content varies. It may contain notes on the winery, the producer, some of the new releases, or other related information. There is also a table of both current released wines and past wines with the ratings from 1 to 3 cups. I find these listings informative and a very helpful guide to selecting wines. It's important to read the text in addition to looking at the ratings. Sometimes it seems a wine that shows well at release (e.g. due partly to fruit) may get higher ratings than a well-structured wine that needs more time in bottle before it will show well.At the end of each region's section is the listing of "other" wineries. These listings are quite brief, perhaps 1/6 page each - I don't have the book in front of me to be exact. It expands the book's coverage nicely. If a winery is listed it seems likely to be a good one worth trying. The book also has a page of vintage ratings separated by wine regions that is unusually comprehensive and quite helpful in deciding whether to buy a particular wine. The ratings give some insight into whether a particular vintage will mature more or less quickly. One thing the book does not have is an indication of which vintages are "ready now" and/or "at peak." If this were done by region or by producer it would be a great addition. If this review was useful please let me know by voting for it.

This guide seems comprehensive and well informed. A minor gripe is that the indices are not very helpful. My big problem is that I suspect it is mainly useful in Italy. Even in very large U. S. online wine stores, the Italian wines they have on offer mostly go unmentioned in this guide. Many wonderful Italian wines are just not exported at all, or in extremely limited quantities. This is not a great guide for the U. S. consumer.

The smaller format is much more versatile. This is a must for people in the wine industry, as well as for wine aficionados.

Excerpt from The Birds of South Africa, Vol. 1The present volume deals with about one half of the Passerine birds found in that portion of South Africa which lies to the south of the Zambesi and Cunene Rivers. In it I have endeavoured to arrange the subject matter in such a manner that a tyro in ornithology may be enabled to identify a specimen with a certain amount of ease and accuracy. The plan and arrangement adopted is based upon that followed by Mr. Eugene Gates in the volumes on "Birds" in the "Fauna of British India," viz., to give a full description, illustrated where necessary, of the characters which define the different genera, followed by a key to the species included in each. Under each species references are given to the author by whom it was first described, to the principal writers on South African ornithology by whom it is mentioned, to the volume of the Catalogue of Birds in the Collection of the British Museum in which it is described, and to Captain Shelley's "Birds of Africa," as well as to a figure, when one exists. The majority of the descriptions have been taken from specimens in the collection of the South African Museum at Cape Town, the remainder from examples in the Albany Museum at Grahamstown, the Durban Museum, Natal, and my own collection. A few of the species described are not represented in South African collections, and in these cases I have either consulted the original descriptions or have examined the "type" specimens in the British or Berlin Museums.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Amazed to find this in print By RLC I was just delighted and amazed to find this volume in print, the author appears in my family tree and was killed in the seige of ladysmith in November 1899. See his page in Wikipedia:- [...]This is a well produced reprint of the original work, sent to me from America at a reasonable cost and in a reasonable time frame. Map you can read By Shopperbarb Well, the reason I wanted this map is because I read Marcia Willet books and they all happen in Cornwall, since I have never been there, I like to know what location she is speaking about. I like the map a lot, it is so bright and easy to read. Makes me want to go to Cornwall, Devon. Thank you

We are going to be in places with little to no cell service so GPS won't work and it's also much easier to figure out where we should be with a larger map to look at (plus I love maps!).
