Excerpt from Butterfly and Moth Book: Personal Studies and Observations of the More Familiar SpeciesMy interest in Moths and Butterflies was awakened some ten years ago while at the farm on which we spent our summers. The big flower garden and the old orchard served free luncheons to these insects and, judging by numbers, they appreciated the treats offered. At the time I was in need of an entire change of thought - a relaxation from the strain which had come with the long illness of the little mother. She had grown better, but I realized that henceforth she would always require my personal care and attention, and I wanted to give her not only these but some new interests which might replace in part other interests that she would be obliged to relinquish. It was then that the Moths and Butterflies solved these problems, for they led us into the fairy-land of Natural Science, where, as we journeyed, we forgot much of the fatigue and pain of earlier days.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Whitlock Butterfly and Moth Book: Personal Studies and Observations of the More Familiar SpeciesI first read this book in elementary school and again in junior high school, and it totally captured my imagination. Even then, I could recognize that this was a beautiful and sincerely written book. I found a copy in later years and it remains one of my most prized possessions in this materialistic world of ours. I get a good feeling whenever I look at it. The book, to me, is poetic. It imparts information, the kind which these days is all too frequently discarded, but, for those of us who know, is very much worth knowing. I have always been fascinated by the author and it was only recently, thanks to the internet, that I have been able to find out a little more about her. She was a remarkable person, and I think her personality can be summed up in the lines in the forward: "But, most of all, I want this book to reach some one weary and overtaxed, and help him to find the rest, relaxation, and enjoyment in the fairyland of Natural Science that the little mother and I found when the Moths and Butterflies showed us the way." She showed me the way too. I wish I could wax poetic as Ellen Robertson-Miller does in the book, but I am content with having the book and her words doing so. It gives me great pride to honor this lady by writing this review.

Read Ebook Mirrors, Prisms, and Lenses: A Text-Book of Geometrical Optics (Classic Reprint), by James P. C. Southall

Excerpt from Mirrors, Prisms, and Lenses: A Text-Book of Geometrical OpticsIn spite of the existence of a number of excellent works on geometrical optics, the need of a text-book which will serve as an introduction to the theory of modern optical instruments appears to be generally recognized; and the present volume, which is the outgrowth of a course of lectures on optics given in Columbia University, has been written in the hope that it may answer this purpose. In a certain sense it may be considered as an abridgment of my treatise on The Principles and Methods of Geometrical Optics, but the reader will also find here a considerable mass of more or less new and original material which is not contained in the larger book. I have endeavored, however, to keep steadily in mind the limitations of the class of students for whom the work is primarily intended and to employ, therefore, only the simplest mathematical processes as far as possible. With this object in view I have purposely entered into much detail in the earlier and more elementary portions of the subject, following in fact the method which has been found to be most satisfactory with my own pupils; but I venture to hope that the book may be not without interest also to readers who already possess a certain knowledge of the subject.Recent years have witnessed extraordinary progress in both ophthalmology and applied optics. Not many persons are aware of the rapid rate at which spectacle optics, in particular, is developing into a severe scientific pursuit; and there are certain portions of this volume which I think will be helpful to the modern oculist and optometrist. Thus, for example, I have been at some pains to explain the fundamental principles of ophthalmic lenses and prisms.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Is a Geometrical Marvel By Jinna Anderson, Applied Artist Working in Text This work is an inventory of the behaviors of light through the various clear mediums of light transmission that are named in its title.. Southall's classic treatise is for inventors, engineers, engineering students, and people who appreciate the physical and geometrical aesthetics of optics. Contains a very comprehensive array of diagrams, with complete explanations. This reviewer has used the book since the mid-1970s for the purposes of invention and study, with excellent results. (Reviewed Dover edition, first published 1964, unabridged & unaltered republication of 3rd edition published by The MacMillan Co., 1933.)

Ansible Up & Running – A Book Review By Chris Wahl Just over a month ago, I purchased a paperback copy of Lorin Hochstein’s Ansible Up & Running book from O’Reilly. Encouragement from Matt Oswalt’s Network Automation With Ansible and Python workshop is to blame, as it gave me the bug to go deeper with Ansible. While Matt was able to provide an excellent starting point in half a day’s effort, I felt it was important to go deeper in smaller bites as I often do with books.Lorin’s book stood out for a number of reasons. Chief among them was the endorsement by Michael DeHaan, the creator of Ansible, in the form of a foreword. He implies that Lorin provides a solid perspective on working with Ansible and was one of the early adopters of the platform. Sold.Ansible Up & Running covers much of the behind-the-scenes details on how the platform arrived into the state that it exists in today. Fireball Mode being replaced by Accelerated Mode would be one example. Additionally, much of the non-Ansible pieces – YAML construction, host naming, Amazon VPCs, and so on – make for interesting asides that offer a thirst for exploration along with use cases to stand up in a lab. The entire book is constructed upon Vagrant, resulting in a near zero investment for the reader to follow along.I’ve enjoyed the journey to deploy a test application, Mezzanine, which begins in the fifth chapter after numerous background components are introduced, explained, explored, and pondered upon. The book is chocked full of code snipets and playbook examples, aiding the understanding of how to build out a proper environment with Ansible. There’s an entire chapter on making your Ansible deployment speedier. And an appendix that deep dives into SSH.Attention to detail at this level is what makes Ansible Up & Running a great book. If you’re at all interested in configuration management with Ansible, or just curious how it all works, I’d suggest grabbing a copy.

This one covers the ins and outs of all you'd need to know about Ansible, including a couple of advanced topics, and sets the stage for you to learn more by teaching you the right way to write a playbook early on.

Alfie and Emilia stood in the middle of the kitchen. Emilia had her hands on her hips, and Alfie had his arms crossed over his chest. They scowled at each other. The overflowing trash can sat on the floor between them.

“It’s your turn!” Emilia cried.

Alfie shook his head. “No, it’s not!”

They stared each other down.

“Well, I’m not doing it,” Emilia finally said.

“Neither am I,” Alfie replied.

“Alfredo!” Emilia shouted, using Alfie’s full name.

Dad appeared in the doorway. “Quietare!” he said in Italian. “Quiet down. What’s all the shouting about?”

“It’s Alfie’s turn to take out the garbage, and he won’t do it,” Emilia said.

“I did it last week!” Alfie cried.

“No, you didn’t!” Emilia stomped her foot.

“Enough!” Dad held up his hands between them. “What’s gotten into you two lately? You can’t seem to get along for more than ten minutes at a time.”

Alfie and Emilia were silent as they stared at the floor.

“Alfie, pick up the bag. Emilia, go open the garbage can in the garage. You can do it together,” Dad said.

Alfie was about to protest again when he saw the serious look on Dad’s face. Dad was not messing around. Alfie sighed, picked up the bag, and followed Emilia into the garage.

“I know it was your turn,” Emilia whispered as she lifted the lid on the bin. “You’re just being a baby.”

Alfie rolled his eyes. Emilia could be such a know-it-all, especially now that she’d turned thirteen. She was only a year and a few months older than Alfie, but she liked to remind him of that fact every chance she got.

Alfie and Emilia stomped back through the kitchen and stood in the doorway to the family room. Dad had his back to them and was talking to their great-aunt Donatella.

“Maybe this is a bad weekend for us to go on our trip,” Dad was saying. “Those two just can’t seem to get along lately.”

“Nonsenso! Nonsense!” Zia Donatella replied, sweeping aside her long salt-and-pepper hair. “You and Arianna have waited ages to have a weekend away. You deserve it.”

“We have been looking forward to it . . . ,” Dad said.

“We’ll be fine here,” Zia continued. “Don’t you worry about a thing.”

“All right, we’ll stick to our plan.” Dad picked up his briefcase. “Well, I’d better get to work. See you tonight.”

“Arrivederci!” Zia called before turning to see Alfie and Emilia sulking in the doorway.

“Do you think we can all get along this weekend?” Zia asked. Alfie and Emilia nodded. “Good. Now, anything you want to do while your parents are away?”

“I want to play video games and maybe watch a movie!” Alfie said. “And we’re going to cook, right?”

“Of course!” Zia said. Zia was an incredible cook, and ever since she’d come to stay with the Bertolizzi family, she’d taught Alfie and Emilia some amazing recipes she’d learned from her travels around the world.

Emilia made her way over to the sofa and flopped down. “I have a history presentation I need to get started on,” she said, giving Alfie a look like she was being more responsible than he was.

“That should be fun.” Zia perched on the arm of the sofa next to Emilia. Everybody knew that Emilia loved history. It was her favorite subject. Alfie, on the other hand, could never get enough of geography. His bedroom walls were plastered with maps of all kinds. And he was forever looking at maps online—everything from world maps to city maps—even climate maps!

“My presentation has to be on the history of a specific city or state,” Emilia continued. “I just can’t decide which to focus on!”

“Well, you’ve got plenty of options,” Alfie replied, smiling at Zia. He thought about all the places they’d visited and experiences they’d had thanks to Zia’s magical recipes. “You could talk about any of the cities we’ve gone to.”

“I know,” Emilia replied. “I just can’t decide if I should present somewhere we’ve already been or somewhere new we might go!”

Zia nodded. “That’s a tough decision.”

“Not to me!” Alfie said. “I’d definitely give a talk about somewhere we’ve been. That’s much easier. You could talk about the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, or the Eiffel Tower in Paris!”

Just then Mom walked down the stairs. “Who’s going to the Eiffel Tower?” she asked.

Alfie looked at Zia, who busied herself picking lint off the arm of the sofa. Mom and Dad didn’t know about any of Alfie and Emilia’s adventures. It was their and Zia’s little secret.

“Uh, no one,” Emilia replied. “We were just talking about my history presentation.”

“Oh, I just love Paris!” Mom gushed. “Eating fresh croissants every morning and going to all those sidewalk cafés . . .”

“And the markets!” Alfie chimed in; then his eyes widened as he realized what he’d said. “I mean, you know . . . I remember how Zia was telling us about the markets . . .”

Mom nodded, but looked a little confused.

“Well,” Zia said, straightening the brightly colored stone necklace she always wore, “aren’t you two going to be late for school?”

Mom glanced at the clock on the mantel. “Oh, goodness! It is late. Grab your stuff, kids. We’ve gotta go!”

“Bye, Zia!” Emilia said, giving her a quick hug.

“Bye!” Alfie gave Zia a grateful smile before slinging his backpack over his shoulder.

Zia winked. “Have a good day, bambini!”

The next morning, Alfie rubbed his eyes as he shuffled into the kitchen, ready for breakfast. Every Saturday morning, Zia, Mom, and Dad made breakfast together. What they made was always a surprise, and it was always delicious—whether it was lemon-ricotta pancakes or breakfast burritos. But the kitchen was empty. Only silence filled the air—not a single mouthwatering food smell.

“Mom? Dad? Zia?” Alfie called, confused. Nobody answered.

Emilia burst through the kitchen door. “Where is everyone?” she asked. “What’s for breakfast?”

“I don’t know,” Alfie said. “I’m going to check the garage.”

“I’ll go,” Emilia said, jostling toward the door.

“No, I got it!” Alfie said, elbowing past Emilia.

Alfie and Emilia pushed through the door at the same time and spilled into the garage. The garage door was open, and Dad and Zia were standing in the driveway packing the car. Mom hustled past them with another bag.

“I’m ready!” she sang.

“You’re leaving already?” Alfie asked, stepping lightly across the concrete in his bare feet.

“We want to get an early start, champ,” said Dad. “It’s a bit of a drive to the cabin.”

“But we haven’t had breakfast together yet!” Emilia said.

“Don’t worry,” Zia said. “We’ll make breakfast as soon as they get on the road.”

Alfie looked at Mom and Dad. Dad whistled as he packed the car. Mom couldn’t stop smiling. “Well, have a good time, I guess,” Alfie said.

Mom swooped in and kissed Alfie’s forehead. “We will! And you two be good for Zia. I don’t want to hear about any more bickering, either, understood?”

“Yes, Mom,” Alfie and Emilia said together.

Dad opened his wallet and pulled out what Alfie thought were several twenty-dollar bills. “Here’s a little something extra for the weekend,” he told them. “In case you guys want to take Zia out for a treat or something.” Then he handed the cash to Alfie.

Alfie grinned and put the money in the pocket of his pajama pants. “Thanks, Dad!”

Emilia glared at Alfie for pocketing the money, but then managed a smile. “Yeah, thanks, Dad.”

“Be good,” Dad said, looking them both in the eyes.

“We will,” they responded together.

Zia put her arms around Alfie’s and Emilia’s shoulders as they watched the car back down the driveway. Dad honked the horn, and Mom waved before they pulled away.

“Now, let’s go see about that breakfast, shall we?” Zia asked.

Back in the kitchen, Zia whipped up omelets with cheddar cheese and mushrooms while Emilia cut up some fresh fruit, and Alfie set the table. Breakfast was quieter than usual with Mom and Dad gone. They ate their food mostly in silence. Then Alfie flicked a piece of cantaloupe onto Emilia’s plate just to annoy her. It worked.

“Alfie, don’t!” Emilia said, breaking the silence.

“What?” he replied with a sly smile.

Zia stood up and sighed. “I think I’ll take care of the kitchen cleanup myself. Why don’t the two of you spend some time on your own this morning? Away from each other. Emilia, you can get started on your history report, and Alfie, you can practice your drums.”

“Okay, Zia,” Emilia said.

The author tells the story of her faithful dog, Jack, whom she loves unconditionally and cares for. As he begins to ail and battle with his health, she suffers deeply, but finds ways to deal with the anxiety and emotional turmoil that sometimes overwhelms her. She shares the importance of taking stock of these emotions and working constructively with them, as it is only in the awareness of the fears around Jack’s visits to the vet and his subsequent slow departure to the other side, that she is able to effectively deal with the angst. In this way rather than identifying with his ailing body she becomes totally present in her loving support. She gracefully weaves practical tools into her story from using Emotional Freedom Technique to simply breathing consciously. She touches on the importance of self care to restore one’s energy and perspective during this challenging process.

Your book reached out to me when I needed it most By GittaW Many thanks for your book - it helped me so much in the run-up to my beloved Henry's passing. His illness followed a similar pattern to Jack's and it was such a comfort to read about your journey and not feel so alone with it all. You and Jack have made such a difference to us during such a difficult time. Thanks, hugs and more thanks, from the bottom of my broken heart.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, by Brett Morgen

Review "The companion book is essential to feel the full weight of the film as the more revealing quotes were omitted from the documentary itself, specifically some from Cobain's friend and Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic. Morgen understands how to use the two mediums to achieve his vision and the ultimate essential work to create the portrait of Cobain as a man. The film offers the bells and whistles but the book provides the real guts of the tale. Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck serves as a two-sided mirror and, appropriately, ends so suddenly without resolution."—Examiner

14 of 17 people found the following review helpful. It's nice to have some of Kurt's artwork printed in a ... By Imaginal Component This book is smaller than I was hoping, dimensions-wise. The text contains an "oral history" style chop-up of the interviews given by the seven people in Montage of Heck (Cobain's mother, sister, father and stepmother, plus early girlfriend Tracy, bandmember Krist Novoselic, and wife Courtney Love), plus a introductory forward by Brett Morgen, the film's director. With the exception of a few photos, all of the images in this book are culled from Montage of Heck; there's not much unreleased stuff. It's nice to have some of Kurt's artwork printed in a book, but a substantial amount of the images in this book are also animation stills that are either an artist's interpretation of Kurt, or adaptions of Kurt's artwork. I was hoping for more of a coffee-table style book dedicated to his artwork and unreleased journal entries, but this is a nice companion to the film nonetheless. Honestly there's not much revelatory in the interviews. Mainly we see how little the people supposedly closest to Kurt knew him: a lot of what they say contradicts each other. I'd suggest this book for diehard fans of Kurt, but it's not as nicely presented as the documentary itself is.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Nice companion book but nothing new... By Haley Kupper I purchased this book along after watching the documentary Montage of Heck. I expected it to have new content that was left out of the documentary but was sort of disappointed when I found it was mostly just a summary of the documentary and the new content was limited to about 5% (if that). I also didn't read the dimensions before purchasing and the book was a little smaller than I would have liked. What I did like about the book is it was organized very well and the quality of the pages (photographs, illustrations, excerpts from Kurt's personal journals) was excellent. I also really appreciated the author's foreword.I really only want this review to be a review of the product itself and not so much the content as the documentary was heavily publicized and if you are here looking at the book, there's a very high chance you got here because you watched the documentary or know enough/have been exposed enough to Nirvana/Kurt that you already have your own opinion anyway. To summarize, this book is a nice companion if you were a fan of the docu and have the cash to spend, otherwise don't expect a ton of new content or other revelatory information.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Donald, Donald, Donald! By Luvvic This is a great companion to the documentary. This book is a lot like that book of Nirvanas treasures, wherein there's personal photographs and stories told by family and friends. If you're a fan, this is a must have, you'll be happy with it. It's not a very long book so weigh that when you buy, don't complain later. Overall, for the price, I'd buy again, like I said, it accompanies the documentary so that's cool in and of itself. There's a lot of artwork I've never seen before and some letters as well. Courtney keeps a stronghold on all of that and maybe one day we'll get the full report when he becomes an estate, depending on how his daughter runs things. But for now, it's another glimpse and some great photos and stories. It's a smaller book, like 8x10. Grab it because we don't know when these things go out of print and that happens a lot and with no warning.
