Must read for hearing-impaired and audiologists By Kristen Hansen Brakeman The Way I Hear It, A Life With Hearing Loss by humorist and hearing health advocate Gael Hannan bridges the gap of information that’s so needed by the hearing impaired, but not provided by medical professionals – not provided because it’s information doctors and audiologists don’t know.With humor and clarity Hannan tells us what it’s actually like to live with a hearing loss, and gives tips and advice on how the hearing impaired can improve the quality of their lives.Hannan has spent a lifetime with hearing loss and knows full well the frustrations, and the social stigma. She identifies the problems in a very relatable way.As someone who has only recently discovered my hearing loss and begrudgingly wears hearing aids (albeit sporadically), I found myself again and again thinking that Hannan was somehow talking about me.In addition to her relatable stories, Hannan gives practical advice. She emphasizes the importance of acceptance and proactive behavior like communicating ones needs to others, and not falling prey to the bad habit of “bluffing” or pretending one has heard when clearly they have not. By Shari E In The Way I Hear It, Gael shares her unique perspective on the realities of leading a life with hearing loss. She combines humor, helpful tips and suggestions, and real emotion. You will both laugh and cry with Gael as you read various parts of the book. Many sections take inspiration from her various blog posts, but there is also much that is new.My favorite parts of the book dealt with Gael’s relationships with her husband and son. I too have a husband who hears well and two children who hear well (so far), so I could relate to her frustrations, worries, and labors of love. I found the suggestions shared by her son to be particularly truthful, heartwarming and helpful. I want to share his words with my own children.Her Heareflections poetry are also quite inspired. You can feel her angst, anger, and acceptance as she asks for her hearing back and shares the happiness she finds from communicating with her loved ones in ways more intimate than words.Gael also offers many useful tips on how to work better with your hearing care provider, how to travel with hearing loss, and the best ways to navigate the confusion of hearing loss technology. She even provides suggestions for better communication with someone with hearing loss from both the hearing and non-hearing persons’ perspectives.But mostly the book is very uplifting. Gael’s joy for life comes through on every page. Despite the challenges of hearing loss, she has many wonderful friends (both hearing and not), a happy family life, a zest for trying new experiences, and a calling — to help others with hearing loss sit better with their own struggles.If you have some time, check out the book. Excerpt from The Inequality of Human RacesThough many people have accused this age of irreligion, there is at least one point of similarity between modem Europe and that pre-Christian Era to which our present religion is due. Just as in ancient Palestine, there are living amongst us two kinds of prophets - the prophets of evil and disaster, and those of bliss, or as Europe likes to call it, of "progress." As in Palestine of old the public usually sides with the lighter, the optimistic, the more comfortable sort of people, with the prophets of bliss, while Time and Fate invariably decide in favour of the sterner and gloomier individuals, the prophets of evil. In the world to-day as well as in Palestine of old, the prophets of bliss are the false prophets; the prophets of evil, to-day as of yore, are the true ones. Such a true prophet was Count Arthur de Gobineau.Even his friends - those few friends whom he gained at the end of his life - still thought him unduly pessimistic. Old Wagner, who introduced him to the German public, thought of brightening his gloom by a little Christian faith, hope, and charity, in order to make the pill more palatable to that great public, which he, the great Stage-manager, knew so well. Other Germans - Chamberlain, Schemann, and the Gobineau school - poured a great deal of water into his wine, sweetened it with patriotic syrups, adulterated it with their own pleasant inventions, which were all too readily swallowed by a gullible and credulous generation. But stem old Gobineau knew the world better than his young and cheerful offspring. Controversial By Jeffrey Leach Frenchman Arthur De Gobineau was better known for his fictional novels, but he wrote this historical-philosophical-sociological work in the 1800's as a result of his lengthy travels throughout the world. Gobineau took his observations and attempted to come up with a theory that would describe the disparity he observed amongst the different human races of the world. The result was a multi-volume set entitled, "The Inequality of Human Races". This translation is of the first volume only, but it reveals the main thrust of De Gobineau's theory and gives the reader much information to mull over. I chose to read this book for a European history class, since this book influenced not only German political and social thought, but also reinforced European views towards colonization and internal class struggles.Gobineau begins his book by looking at popular reasons concerning the collapse of civilizations. Such ideas as bad government, fanaticism and luxury are addressed and dismissed by Gobineau. He believes these are only symptoms of a degeneration of civilizations. His argument ultimately comes down to race mixing as the cause of the decline of civilization. Gobineau argues that civilizations that mix with peoples that are incapable of civilization will destroy that society. In Gobineau's opinion, all problems can be found in "the blood", and these problems can be passed on. Gobineau writes that there are two elements in blood, a male trait, which is concerned with materialistic aspirations, and a female trait, which is concerned with intellectual pursuits. He sees Hindus as having this female trait, which accounts for their intellectual works in religion. Germans have the male trait, a materialistic drive to acquire land and possessions; to go forth and conquer. When these elements mix, the varying degrees can form or destroy civilizations. Gobineau also looks at such things as language, which he says can exhibit traits of civilization. Lesser people can destroy a language by the fusion of their language with the better one.Gobineau is also an elitist. He looks at French peasants and argues that the vast majority of them are completely uninterested in what constitutes civilization, and are capable of only following the lead of the civilized.Sound confusing? It is. This book will take multiple readings to tease out everything Gobineau is trying to say. My biggest problem with the book is Gobineau's efforts to reduce the ills of the world to such a troubling argument. Does Gobineau make a case for his subject? Well, yes, if you lived in the nineteenth century.An interesting book, and one that has had far reaching effects, even up to today. Whatever the reader thinks, Gobineau can't be dismissed as some irrelevant nutcase. His arguments are still being discussed today, which proves the importance of this topic. Good reading for the historian or sociologist.

43 of 52 people found the following review helpful. Direct and clear By Ubraminos A historical document. However its racist content makes it scandalous and it will probably make it unavailable. Is a Rolls-Royce better than a Ferrari? What kind of dog is the best? I dont know but one thing is sure, they are different. Count Gobineau made his choice with human races judging their value by their achievements, but this is not a racist tiresome speech, Gobineau is a good argumentator, and good writer that uses history to prove he is right. The book is a good one with only one problem, its subject. As dangerous books do not exist if you're not a dangerous reader, this essay can be recommended.

I just wanted to warn everyone NOT TO GET THIS EDITION! It is missing whole pages of the original, mixes in footnotes with the actual text, and overall looks like a scan anyone could do. I am angry I spent $15 on something of this poor quality. Yes, they warn you of the typos, but LEAVING OUT PAGES?

By suzanne m cormendy This book is great for learning: what permaculture is and why it's important, the permaculture values and mindset, that you truly can garden anywhere, some tips on setting a permaculture garden up outside, some companion planting combos, and the buzzwords needed to find more information on the topics discussed.I don't feel any more confident to start a permaculture garden however. A larger list of soil breaking plants would be helpful. Are carrots soil breaking plants? Are they conserved to have a long taproot? My suburban neighbors would die if I grew dandelions to break up my soil. I totally get that dandelions are a valuable plant, but the reality is that they're perceived as a noxious weed. I'd need a more subdivision friendly taproot plant. So I'll be researching that and a bunch of other topics this book introduced me to.

There is information on drying herbs is important, how to dry herbs (including the entire process), the various drying methods to use, how to store your herbs after you've dried them, and more. I found the chapter on common mistakes particularly useful. It talks about mistakes made with herbs (not just herb drying) and is insightful for a beginner like me. Overall a great read that I can recommend.

Every map is divided by the book crease By Linda H The medium/small size and light weight of this atlas make it portable and easy to carry with me for study. The maps are all two page spreads, so the center of each map disappears into the crease of the book, it's distracting and hard to get used to. This is becoming less an issue now that the pages are relaxing and are more able to lay flat, but it's not ideal. Most of the maps are regional maps, so you get a close-up, for example, of several US states, or a section of a country or several small countries. It's not very useful for being able to see where nations/states are in relation to each other, so I don't think it's the best for learning exactly where in the world places are located, but the regional maps are fairly detailed if that's what you need.

Western and Eastern Hemispheres are reversed By Lisa B Just so you know, the hemispheres are reversed, using the International Dateline NOT the Prime Meridian to divide the hemispheres. A slightly more interesting view of the world, but utterly useless for my purposes.

Has more details and close up map locations, easier to find names of the rivers, straits, etc. We only wish it had three holes to stay in binder.

In ancient indigenous cultures this gamut of social behavior toward and about nature, was not separated as "religion", but a way of life, an integral part of culture. With the rise of Christian ethic, which separated nature from the human world, thinking about nature became increasingly esoteric and arcane. From the European Renaissance to the age of Romanticism, nature has always been the other side of civilization. Our pristine, inchoate link to nature became increasingly covert. That link resurfaces when we refresh ourselves in Nature, when we identify ourselves with natural entities, feel ourselves as part of nature. And that immediately connects us to nature, and we tend to feel a religious experience, about which Thoreau and Emerson wrote so eloquently. Nevertheless, owing to the inability of the civilized Western enlightened people to eschew modernity, Nature needs to get reconnected only through various ritualistic approaches - transcendental meditation, Zen, Yoga, vegetarianism, veganism, and sometimes harking back to Muir and with attempts to maintain a Secluded, Untrammeled Nature. Zerzan's primitivism is another approach (not mentioned in this book, which appeared earlier than Zerzan's writings). There are more varied and deeper nuances of "nature religion", and this book depicts them exquisitely. An essential read for environmentalists and eco-activists. Despite the complexity of its argument, this book is a wonderful read.
