First he taught you classical mechanics. Now, physicist Leonard Susskind has teamed up with data engineer Art Friedman to present the theory and associated mathematics of the strange world of quantum mechanics. In this follow-up to the New York Times best-selling The Theoretical Minimum, Susskind and Friedman provide a lively introduction to this famously difficult field, which attempts to understand the behavior of sub-atomic objects through mathematical abstractions. Unlike other popularizations that shy away from quantum mechanics’ weirdness, Quantum Mechanics embraces the utter strangeness of quantum logic. The authors offer crystal-clear explanations of the principles of quantum states, uncertainty and time dependence, entanglement, and particle and wave states, among other topics, and each chapter includes exercises to ensure mastery of each area. Like The Theoretical Minimum, this volume runs parallel to Susskind’s eponymous Stanford University-hosted continuing education course. An approachable yet rigorous introduction to a famously difficult topic, Quantum Mechanics provides a tool kit for amateur scientists to learn physics at their own pace.

Quantum Mechanics: The Theoretical Minimum, by Leonard Susskind, Art Friedman

Review “The writing is fresh and immediate, with plenty of detail packaged into the smooth narrative.... [O]n their own terms, I found Susskind and Friedman’s explanations crisp and satisfying.... I maintain a clear recollection of the bewilderment with which I struggled through my own university quantum-mechanics courses. For students in a similar position, trying to draw together the fragments of formalism into a clear conceptual whole, Susskind and Friedman’s persuasive overview—and their insistence on explaining, with sharp mathematical detail, exactly what it is that is strange about quantum mechanics—may be just what is needed.”—David Seery, Nature“[T]he book will work well as a companion text for university students studying quantum mechanics or the armchair physicists following Susskind’s YouTube lectures.”—Publishers Weekly“This is quantum mechanics for real. This is the good stuff, the most mysterious aspects of how reality works, set out with crystalline clarity. If you want to know how physicists really think about the world, this book is the place to start.”—Sean Carroll, physicist, California Institute of Technology, and author of The Particle at the End of the Universe“Susskind does a wonderful job of carefully going through in great detail the story of the simplest quantum system. As advertised, it's the theoretical minimum, but a great place for someone to start on the road to a serious understanding of the mysteries of quantum physics.”—Peter Woit, Professor of Mathematics, Columbia University, and author of Not Even Wrong: The Failure of String Theory and the Search for Unity in Physical Law

About the Author Leonard Susskind has been the Felix Bloch Professor in Theoretical Physics at Stanford University since 1978. He is the author (with George Hrabovsky) of The Theoretical Minimum, as well as The Black Hole War and The Cosmic Landscape. He lives in Palo Alto, California.Art Friedman is a data consultant who previously spent fifteen years at Hewlett-Packard as a software engineer. A lifelong student of physics, he lives in Mountain View, California.

Though a layman in this field, fortunately, I have researched quantum mechanics and read enough books over the last few years on the subject to do a reasonably informed job of covering the salient points:1) I have no doubt the author feels he has attempted to construct this book in a manner that can be understood fairly easily by many. Not to be insulting to anyone, but this book is definitely not for the novice.2) Even with some background in quantum theory, there are many portions of the dialog that went way over my head, as I suspect, it will for many.3) If you are an average reader interested in quantum physics, I have found several other books that cover this suject in a more readily understandable way. I suggest Machio Kaku or Bernard Haisch.4) If you are a science student - college level or above, this book could be very insightful and of value for you.So why Four Stars??? While the ultimate value of this book will be determined by each individual reader, it is critically important that a more widespread understanding of the scientific importance of quantum mechanics is shared by a larger audience. This book contributes to that cause and contains valuable information.

Difficult- but exactly what I was looking for By rickzz After a few years of reading math-free QM popularizations, I decided to try to learn the math. Finding a book that bridges the vast gap between the popularizations and textbooks, though, has been a real challenge.Thankfully, this book is now available. Yes, it's difficult but it's far more accessible than a textbook. The authors have really made an effort to offer insight into what is inherently a very abstract and mathematical subject. Like FLP-III (Feynman's Lectures on Physics), the approach is to start with "spin-first" and then work "backwards" to the Schrodinger equation, which is the starting point for most textbooks (that way, the harder math is deferred until later). However, QM:TM is more modern and easier than FLP, which is after all, meant for future physicists. If you don't know any advanced math (calculus, complex numbers, etc.) then you should pass on this book. But the "math-divide" has now been bridged by this book, which is destined to be a classic.Note: I didn't care much for TM: volume I (it was too rushed and brief) but that's not the case with volume II. The only con is there's no companion site (as far as I know) with solutions to the exercises.

However, I am extremely puzzled how the kindle version was distributed with typesetting issues associated with the Dirac bracket which make it difficult to read. There was obviously no review of the electronic version. Amazon should republish a correction ASAP.

Bought in conjunction with a college intermediate macro class for econ majors. It's certainly not a light read but offers good explanations to macro theory using classic models. Not very heavy on math but the occasional use of basic calculous is expected. The examples are also relevant and up-to-date which is a pleasant surprise.

Dewey Andreas is back...and the clock is ticking!

Cloud, a high-level Russian hacker, perhaps the best in the world, has acquired a nuclear weapon. It's an older bomb from the USSR's Cold War arsenal with the power to devastate a major city. Fueled by a dark and personal vendetta, Cloud has put it onto an anonymous trawler, piloted by jihadists, headed straight to America.

Dewey Andreas, former Delta working as an agent for the C.I.A., is still drowning in grief after the tragic murder of his fiancée. Dewey has lost his focus, his edge, and the confidence of his superiors.

Learning of the missing loose nuke and picking up chatter about an impending terrorist attack on American shores, the best and most talented C.I.A. agents are now chasing both Cloud and the bomb. Acting on credible intel, two highly trained teams are sent into Russia in a two-pronged mission to grab Cloud. But it's a trap, and now America's last hope of stopping the bomb is an unofficial agent gone rogue-Dewey Andreas.

With only three days left, Dewey Andreas must find the elusive Cloud. To do so, Dewey will risk everything to find the most dangerous and skilled enemy he's yet faced. For if he fails, American will suffer its most deadly terrorist attack on the Fourth of July-Independence Day.

Done correctly they can build suspense and add to the excitement of a good book. Ben Coes seems to have done so without the lulls. Action packed from beginning to end. Great to see Dewey Andreas back in fine form. Very enjoyable read.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Simply an awesome book! I couldn't put it down! By Thomas D. John I loved it! Our story starts with Dewey a distressed and almost broken man. We recall his fiancé was murdered in the last installment of the saga of Dewey Andreas. Our story involves Russian mobsters, hackers, a prima ballerina, Navy Seals, the CIA, and a plot to bomb us on July 4th. Ben Coes ability to weave such an involved plot in such a realistic and plausible way speaks to the fact that as an author, he is really hitting his stride. I literally couldn't put the book down. Coes ranks right up there with the late Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn, as well as Brad Thor in the best of the genre. I couldn't recommend it more.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. I don’t think I’ll celebrate another Fourth of July without thinking of INDEPENDENCE DAY By Bookreporter I would ask those of you who selectively delete books that are over a certain page count --- say, 300 --- to break tradition for INDEPENDENCE DAY. Like its namesake holiday, it is explosive from beginning to end and one of those rare titles that is so much fun that you wish it would never end.INDEPENDENCE DAY, the fifth Dewey Andreas novel by Ben Coes, commences some 30 years in the past with a tragic vignette that provides the motivating force behind what occurs in the present. The premise is simple enough. An enigmatic, genius-level Russian computer hacker named Cloud plans to launch an up-close-and-personal nuclear attack on the United States on the Fourth of July. How he gets hold of the material to do so is but one of many elements that makes INDEPENDENCE DAY a rocket ride of a book, as is the manner in which the United States government slowly becomes aware of the plot and tries to play catch-up against an adversary who is at least three steps ahead of it before the government even knows that it’s in the fight of its life.Dewey Andreas, a former Delta Force member who is now a black-ops go-to guy for the CIA, is the obvious choice to stop Cloud. However, he is still reeling physically and emotionally from the events of 2013’s EYE FOR AN EYE. When a (relatively) minor operation almost goes south because of a Dewey freeze-up, the decision is made to temporarily take him off the roster. Dewey is hardly one to quietly go off to therapy and sit still when the time comes to stand up and be counted. He takes off on a mission of his own, and all too quickly finds himself to be the most wanted man in Russia. A good deal of INDEPENDENCE DAY consists of Dewey engaging in his own unique brand of urban open field running; seriously wounded, he attempts to evade both police and citizenry while trying to find the extremely elusive Cloud with the intent of eliciting the geographical target of his nuclear attack by any means necessary. While Dewey and others are waging the ground war, a second but equally meaningful war is being waged in cyberspace between Cloud and Igor, a freelance computer hacker who has been recruited by the CIA. Igor is the CIA’s --- and Dewey’s --- last, best and only hope of finding Cloud’s location and the delivery method of his nuclear attack before the Fourth of July. Dewey and Igor are both driven and relentless, in very different ways --- members of a team who never meet but work in tandem, even as the sand runs all too quickly through the hourglass, as an all-but-certain disaster approaches.Dewey arguably has never been more driven or relentless as he is in INDEPENDENCE DAY. He is not afraid of inflicting collateral damage for the good of the many while at the same time ignoring the damage to himself. Among the book’s many high points is a step-by-step description, courtesy of Dewey, of how to field dress a wound while driving in Russia without a first aid kit. Oh my. The description is not for the faint of heart, but is certainly an eye opener. This occurs, of course, while Dewey is being pursued by literally everyone in Russia. Coes puts Dewey through so much that at one point while reading, I said, to no one in particular, “Give the guy a break!” Coes does, but not in the way I meant.INDEPENDENCE DAY may well be the best installment of the series to date. I don’t think I’ll celebrate another Fourth of July without thinking of it. There’s enough action, explosions, fatalities and (best of all) intelligence nuggets to fill a summer’s equivalent of books. After you read it, please check out the Acknowledgements (or at least the first few paragraphs of it). You’ll be glad you did. Strongly recommended, from first page to last.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub

Excerpt from The Botany of the Antarctic Voyage of H. M. Discovery Ships Erebus and Terror in the Years Under the Command of Captain Sir James Clark Ross, KtIn the beginning of the year 1839, the British Government having determined on fitting out an Expedition, for the purpose of investigating the phenomena of Terrestrial Magnetism in various remote countries, and for prosecuting Maritime Geographical Discovery in the high southern latitudes, H.M. Ships Erebus and Terror, commissioned by Captain Sir James Clark Ross, sailed from Chatham on the 29th of September 1839. In addition to carrying out the above-mentioned leading views, it was enjoined to the officers, that they should use every exertion to collect the various objects of Natural History which the many heretofore unexplored countries about to be visited would afford. On the outward voyage we touched at most of the Atlantic Islands, making a longer stay at some of them than is usual, on account of the nature of the observations that were instituted. At Madeira, which was the first visited, we called in the middle of October, and remained eleven days; and then made Teneriffe and the Cape de Verds, whence we sailed for and landed upon St. Paul's Rocks, under the Line, in long. 29° W. St. Helena was the next destination, and the course which it was found necessary to follow took us to the Island of Trinidad off the Brazilian coast, lat. 20° S.After spending a week at St. Helena, the vessels sailed for the Cape of Good Hope, arriving there on the 4th of April 1840.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He was stationed on Ross Island and could see Mount Erebus and Mount Terror, named after these two ships. It was part of a package of books and articles that I put together for a birthday present. I am still researching the genealogy, attempting to find any connection to Sir James Clark Ross, who explored this area. It was an adventure for me. I learned a great deal about the Antarctic exploration. The H.M.S. Terror had previously been involved in the War of 1812 and the shelling which led to Francis Scott Key penning the words of the Star Spangled Banner. Thanks for a great book and thanks to Amazon for helping me make his birthday memorable.

UNEXPLAINED DEATHS OF THE SINISTER KIND. MYSTERIOUS DEATHS. True Stories of the most mysterious, strange and unexplained deaths. Intriguing, puzzling, and thoroughly strange; these are true tales of mysterious deaths. Creepy, bizarre, mysterious and sinister....with hints at conspiracies & plots of murder. Were they accidents, murders or suicides? Were they murdered, or were they "suicided?" Excerpts; 'Passengers at the station embarked and entered the first class carriage to find that a lady was slumped in her seat with a dagger sticking out of her neck. Just one minute had passed between the two stations, and no-one had been in the compartment apart from the now dead lady when it pulled into the second station. Where had her killer come from, and how had he managed to escape between stations with the train moving?' “He phoned me the night before. He sounded scared. They’re gonna make it look like a suicide. I know how these b.....’s think,” 'His watch and some of his clothing turned up a few days later on a ranch nearby. His wife recognised a piece of blue cloth; it looked like it came from her husband’s uniform, and it looked almost like it had been cut into a perfect rectangle. It was hanging from the barbed wire fence.' 'Independent analysis on the suicide notes left behind, by Dr Chaski of the Institute of Linguistic Evidence, claimed, “These are not real suicide notes.” 'First he screwed holes into his bathroom walls with bolts. To the bolts he attached ropes and pulleys and then he took those ropes and pulleys, threw them around the toilet which was behind the bathroom door, fashioned a noose around his neck and then stood on a chair and jumped to his death. But later, when the crime scene was examined, no holes in the wall were found.' ''Was he the sort of man to be threatened? He’d once spent a year living among the Hells Angels. He didn’t seem the type to scare easily; unless perhaps it had been his family, and not him, who had been threatened. Or was he ‘assassinated’ by a silenced gunshot to the head. One quick clean shot and a fast get-away. His son had thought it sounded like a book falling. A thud; like the sound of a silenced weapon?' A brilliantly conceived, deeply unsettling psychological thriller— already an international sensation—about a woman haunted by secrets, the consuming desire for revenge, and the terrible price we pay when we try to hide the truth.

Finding a mysterious novel at her bedside plunges documentary filmmaker Catherine Ravenscroft into a living nightmare. Though ostensibly fiction, The Perfect Stranger recreates in vivid, unmistakable detail the terrible day she became hostage to a dark secret, a secret that only one other person knew—and that person is dead.

Now that the past is catching up with her, Catherine’s world is falling apart. Her only hope is to confront what really happened on that awful day . . . even if the shocking truth might destroy her.

Disclaimer: A Novel, by Renée Knight

Review “Let me now acknowledge having done what thriller writers love doing: burying the lead. It’s Disclaimer that turns out to be the Gone Girl of the season.” (Janet Maslin, New York Times)“Disclaimer is something special. . . an outstandingly clever and twisty tale that’s been perfectly engineered to make heads spin.” (Janet Maslin, New York Times)“Sensationally good psychological suspense…exactly what a great thriller should be.” (Lee Child)“Renée Knight’s debut book is being compared with Gone Girl. . . . A chilling premise.” (Wall Street Journal)“With pitch-perfect pacing and alternating narrators that leap off the page, Disclaimer is both a page-turning mystery and an artful exploration of the explosive intersection between marriage and motherhood, revenge and regret. A wonderfully compelling book.” (Kimberly McCreight, New York Times bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia)“The marvel of…Disclaimer is that it just about lives up to its unusually gripping premise…[and] forms a trinity alongside Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train as the best of domestic noir.” (New York Daily News)“Disclaimer stealthily steals your attention and by the end holds you prisoner—a searing story that resonates long after the final page. The best thriller I’ve read this year.” (Rosamund Lupton, New York Times bestselling author of Sister and Afterwards)“Knight’s pace…nuilds momentum and ends with a series of breakneck plot twists and surprises.… A seriously unnerving roller coaster…. It’s also a surprisingly sophisticated examination of marriage, motherhood and memory, as well as—naturally—guilt, grief and revenge.” (Richmond Times-Dispatch)“A mysterious book within a book, which contains potentially damning information about the protagonist, jump starts this remarkable debut by British scriptwriter Knight....This unsettling psychological thriller about guilt and grief briskly moves to a shocking finale enhanced by its strong characters.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“The first requirement of a fabulous summer read is that it should be too enthralling to put down. Disclaimer meets that requirement mightily.… A gripping, well-written story for those who aren’t afraid of the darker side of summer reading.” (Charleston Gazette)“Knight’s elegant plot and compelling…characters keep the heart of the novel beating.… Atmospheric and twisting…a page-turner. An addictive psychological thriller.” (Kirkus Reviews)“This debut British psychological thriller engages the reader from page one; mystery aficionados will dash to finish it in one sitting. Deliciously captivating, brilliantly twisty, and enticingly addictive, it hits the trifecta for a strong thriller!” (Library Journal (starred review))“Knight plays with our allegiances in this juicy domestic noir.” (BookPage.com)“This is a good psychological thriller with the ever-popular unreliable narrator, in this case two of them, along with lots of family drama. Sure to appeal to fans of Before I Go to Sleep, by S. J. Watson.” (Booklist)“A terrific novel with a brilliantly creepy central premise. One of the best debut thrillers I have ever read.” (Paula Daly, author of What Kind of Mother Are You?)“The control of the reader’s sympathies, the construction and pacing and the interweaving of [the] narratives, past and present, are remarkably accomplished in an addictive novel that has parallels with Gone Girl, but shows no sign of brazenly jumping onto that book’s bandwagon.” (London Sunday Times)“New authors need to stand out and Renée Knight has a doozy of an opening for Disclaimer…. Why is the driving question here, not how or who, and it’s really well done.” (Globe and Mail (Toronto))“Disclaimer by Renee Knight is an obsessive read. It is not a book to be read a chapter at a time, but one that demands to be devoured at once.” (NY Journal of Books)“Unsettling…. The ending delivers more than one emotional wallop. Readers’ feelings about each character will likely be upended as they’re reminded that sometimes people commit atrocious acts out of love, and those who behave abhorrently can also be honorable.” (Shelf Awareness (starred))“A brilliantly conceived, deeply disturbing psychological thriller about a woman haunted by secrets-and the price she will pay for concealing the truth.” (Quivering Pen)“Knight stretches the limits of. . . human emotions and struggles. . . [leading] the reader to a satisfactory and shocking conclusion.” (The Life Sentence)“Knight has twisted a story of decaying love, and built a psychological suspense tale that raises the hair on the back of your neck.… If psychological suspense is what interests you, look no further.” (BlogCritics.com)“Unsettling, yet impossible to set down…. A captivating read you’ll find lingers with you long after the final page has been turned.” (BookLoons.com)

From the Back Cover

“Sensationally good psychological suspense. . . . exactly what a great thriller should be.”—Lee Child

What if you realized the terrifying book you were reading was all about you?

When a mysterious novel appears at Catherine Ravenscroft’s bedside, she is curious. She has no idea who might have sent her The Perfect Stranger—or how it ended up on her nightstand. At first, she is intrigued by the suspenseful story that unfolds.

And then she realizes.

This isn’t fiction.

The Perfect Stranger re-creates in vivid, unmistakable detail the day Catherine became hostage to a dark secret, a secret that only one other person knew—and that person is dead.

Now that the past Catherine so desperately wants to forget is catching up with her, her world is falling apart. Plunged into a living nightmare, her only hope is to confront what really happened on that terrible day . . . even if the shocking truth might destroy her.

By Sue Kichenside Disclaimer is billed as the new Girl on the Train which was billed as the new Gone Girl. Does raising expectations to such a degree inevitably lead to disappointment? Well, admittedly, the initial premise of the main protagonist coming across herself in a novel is enticing. But Ms Knight then proceeds to toy with the reader, on and on she teases, until it's hard to escape the feeling that we are being unduly and rather meanly manipulated. It is immensely difficult to engage with any of these characters. It's not a matter of them being dislikeable (they are) but something more fundamental in that they fail to ring true on any level. This produces a don't-care-two-hoots response from the reader that is, frankly, fatal. Towards the end, they all perform such a volte-face that they become - if this is indeed possible - even more implausible. The odious ins and outs of the plot left me feeling faintly grubby and I was pleased to wash my hands of the whole thing. So no. Not as good as The Girl on the Train or Gone Girl. Though it certainly thinks it is.

She is married to husband Robert and both of them have a successful and high status career – Robert in law and Catherine in television documentaries. They have one grown son, Nicholas, who has not quite lived up the expectations they wanted for him; but he has moved out and is living an independent life. So, Catherine in 2013 is a respected and loved woman, who has recently moved house and is looking forward to the future. However, a book seems to have appeared in her new home – left seemingly in a pile by her bed, with the disclaimer, “any resemblance to persons living or dead…” neatly crossed out with red ink.As Catherine reads the book, she realises that the main character is supposed to be her and that the story revolves around an incident which happened many years ago. Now Catherine is fearful of who knows the secret she has carefully guarded all these years. This thriller weaves an interesting storyline, revolving around Catherine and her family and Stephen Brigstocke; a retired teacher, who is determined to destroy Catherine’s life. It is difficult to review the book without revealing the plot and I have no wish to spoil your enjoyment of a thriller which is certain to be a big success in 2015. Catherine is a capable woman under attack, while Brigstocke is a creepy and insidious opponent. This has a lot of twists and turns, great characters and will keep you turning the pages until the end. A good debut and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Disclaimer - any resemblance to Gone Girl is purely coincidental By Roni Jordan Of course the inevitable comparisons to Gone Girl are being made, initiated by Janet Maslin's brief review in the NY Times. The two stories are of the same genre - suspenseful thrillers told in alternating voices by two opposing characters, with an enormous deceit being perpetrated by one character to punish another. There I feel the similarities end. Disclaimer has so many more layers of interest and character development - the dynamics of two marriages deeply affected by the secret at its center, and two young sons whose lives are flung off-course by the best of parental intentions. The first half of the book made me hunger to know how Catherine, the victim, and Stephen, the perpetrator, were connected and from whence his hatred of her had sprung. Once that is revealed, the story accelerates around surprising hairpin turns of truths, shifting sympathies for the characters, and a conclusion that felt both just and logical. Thoroughly enjoyable read, and I look forward to the film, for this was truly one worthy of bringing to the screen.

Excerpt from The Human FigureSuccessfully to build up the human figure in a drawing, painting or statue, either from imagination or from a model, the artist or sculptor must be possessed of a keen sense of construction. The human body, with its varied beauty of construction, character and action, is so complex that it is essential for the student, artist and sculptor not only to have a clear knowledge of its intricate forms, but a comprehensive understanding and a habit of simple treatment in order to apply this knowledge to its artistic end.The artist is immediately concerned with the external and the apparent. He views nature as color, tone, texture and light and shade, but back of his immediate concern, whether he be figure painter or illustrator, in order to render the human form with success, he stands in need of skill in the use of his knowledge of structure, of his understanding of action and of his insight into character. These things require a period of profound academic study. When we consider the infinite variety of action of the human form, its suppleness, grace and strength of movement in the expression of the fleeting action, and farther consider that the surface of the body is enveloped in effects of light and shade, iridescent color and delicate tone, it is not to be wondered at that the student's eye is readily blinded to the hidden construction of the form.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 95 of 100 people found the following review helpful. Not for everyone By A Customer Nelson Shanks refers to the illustrations of this book as examples of simplifying the human form into patterns of light and dark. While the illustrations do accomplish this, the book is by no means a reference manual for rendering the human body. Also, most of the illustrations appear washed out in my copy of this book. If you are interested in beautiful examples of sensitive charcole renderings of the human figure, this book is outstanding. If you want a visual reference work on the under-structures of the human form, you can find better books than this one.For anatomical reference, I highly recommend: "Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing From Life" by George B. Bridgman, and "The Human Figure: An Anatomy for Artists" by David K. Rubins.

38 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Small but eloquent... By A Customer This is an elegant, eloquent little book. I'm a professional illustrator and sculptor, from a family of artists, and I find this small book stands out among the many references available. It has a graciousness about it, not merely addressing anatomy, but giving a graceful translation of form.I think it's good to have a number of references, and this is one I wouldn't do without!

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. One of the "Standard Texts" for master artists By Reviewer This book is still "standard issue " for masters like Nelson Shanks - and still in the store at the Art Students League in New York. Why? because its one of the best resources out there for people who want to become master artists - Books like "drawing on the right side of the brain' are great for people who want to learn how to draw. But becoming a master is something different (I am not belittling Drawing on the right side of the brain -its a great book) some people find its hard to believe that a cheap edition (and yes I wish the reproductions of the drawings were better) can provide as much 'knowledge' as a slick, more expensive book - its a longer harder path and more challenging - but follow the principles in this book , and copy the drawings (particularly on the head) and you'll be on your path to becoming a master drawer.

By Michael Cawley I believe Mr. White's book does a splendid job in describing all of the Nikon Coolpix 610 capabilities, and does it in such a fashion that a novice such as me may learn great photographic skills. The book is easy to read and comprehend.

Very Thorough By Amazon Customer Very good, although I still have to read certain parts or explanations many times and go through the steps before I understand. Part of this is vocabulary, and I wish more in the know photography pundits would use user friendly language. But the book is very helpful and I am not sorry I ordered it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Better than the standard manual By A. Collins This book offers so much more information than the manual that came with the camera. I am using many features that I would never have figured out without the book. I am a beginner photographer and so much of this is new to me so I am happy to have a good reference.I wanted to practice with my camera before a big trip I have upcoming. I think I will have many great photographs when I return.

Excerpt from The Method of Fluxions and Infinite Series: With Its Application to the Geometry of Curve-LinesIt was a laudable custom among the ancient Geometers, and very worthy to be imitated by their Successors, to address their Mathematical labours, not so much to Men of eminent rank and ration in the world, as to Persons of distinguish merit and proficience in the fame Studies. For they knew very well, that such only could be competent Judges of their Works, and would receive them with the esteem they might deserve. So far at least I can copy after those great Originals, as to chufe a Patron for these Speculations, whose known skill and abilities in such matters will enable him to judge, and whose known candor will incline him to judge favourably, of the share I have had in the present performance. For as to the fundamental part of the Work, of which I am only the Interpreter, I know it cannot but please you; it will need no protection, nor can it receive a greater recommendation, than to bear the name of its illustrious Author. However, it very naturally applies itself to you, who had the honour (for I am sure you think it so) of the Author's friendship and familiarity in his life-time; who had his own consent to publish an elegant edition of some of his pieces, of a nature not very different from this; and who have so just an esteem for, as well as knowledge of, his other most sublime, moil admirable, and justly celebrated Works.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Newtons Undervalued Masterpiece By Serge Marinkovic MD I have the first edition of Leibnitz and now Newtons foray into calculus and can say i learned more from Newtons presentation than from Leibnitz. Although Leibnitz's is from whom we received the currently used nomenclature from while Newtons descriptions never caught on.

Have you written a brilliant eBook and you want to publish it online?

That’s a great idea! Publishing an eBook is a fast-track way to generate a passive income and build up your authority brand as an author publisher entrepreneur at the same time. In fact, it is such a great idea that you have decided to finish your final draft, smarten up the manuscript in the next few evenings and knock up a snazzy eBook cover by fiddling with your office software. How hard can it be?

STOP! Please don’t make a HUGE mistake.

Actually, this is one of the biggest mistakes that any self-published author can make. I know that you cannot wait to press that publish button and see your book in the Kindle store! The whole book could go on sale in days! The hard fact is that 90% of making any book a success is in the execution. Only 10% is the creative idea and the content. By rushing ahead, you run the risk of missing steps, making mistakes and adding stress and anxiety into the publishing process. Change that. This complete Launch Plan gives you a reliable, tested and proven 30 Day Plan that takes you through all of the steps that you need to take to launch your own eBook. The plan includes comprehensive weekly checklists that I have personally used many times to take every manuscript from a final draft to an eBook which is on sale and earning an income – within a month. The same principles apply whether your book is a digital only eBook or a print on demand title or both. This plan is completely flexible. By breaking the whole process down into weekly action plans you can quickly build up the expertise and knowledge to create and publish a whole series of eBooks, generating more passive income and growing your business, month after month. You can publish faster and more effectively and use the time you have saved to write more books. Achieve your goals by working smarter, not harder. This complete Book Launch Plan gives you: •A detailed step-by-step plan so that you always know what to do and when. •The steps are broken down into four work strands which weave together to create a unique and comprehensive powerful launch plan. •There are lists of all of the steps that you need to complete to: Create your Manuscript, Build your eBook, Publish your eBook and then help readers to find your book through Marketing and Promotion. •Four weekly action plans with 20 milestones along the way. •Options for fiction and non-fiction authors to help you customise your launch plan for your work. •Professional tips on how to promote and market your book to your audience, both before and after your eBook is published. Invaluable information for anyone self-publishing By Steve Wilson A very informative book that strips away much of the mystery surrounding self-publishing, giving a step-by-step easy to follow guide to the entire process. Having already self-published several works myself, many of the points were familiar to me, but others were new (and would have benefited me greatly had I been aware of them at the time I published my own books). The book covers many areas, and the ones I found to be most valuable are:1. Copy editing and content editing – differentiating between them and explaining the benefits of both2. Promotion via websites, blogs and social media.3. Where to sell – e.g. Kindle, Nook, exclusive or not, depending on location4. Whether to use aggregators to distribute the finished book5. Royalty rates - pros and cons and variations across companies6. Cover design - perhaps the most important aspect of all7. ‘Do it yourself’ versus pay for professional services – which will be, in part, dependent on the sales volumes you expect to make8. Author brand to get repeat readers9. Tax on royalties in other countries, especially USA10. Advice on free book promotions - pros and cons -, discounts and pricing strategies11. Advice on choosing ranking categories and researching the best keywords and categories to move you up the ranking tables and make your book easier to find

There was so much information in this book that I have reconsidered self-publishing a story I'd put on the back burner. This guide takes you step by step from editing all the way through publicity for your novel. Ms. Harrington has found the secret to a quick yet effective book launch!

The week by week, step by step plan made it easy to understand and visualise the activities required to launch a book. I particularly liked the platform information (including pros and cons) and that there were options for each element of the plan, including how to DIY or what to look for with paid services. The information in this book covered everything from creation of the book itself, marketing, author platform, technical requirements to launch and more. The information was great even for those with only a basic understanding of self-publishing, as each topic was clearly explained and labelled. There were also plenty of links to expand on certain topics as well as neat checklists at the end of each section, making it easy to implement the steps that Ms. Harrington suggests. I feel this is a book I will return to over and over, making it a valuable tool in your self-publishing arsenal.
