From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Ballet Cat and Sparkles the Pony are great friends. One day, when choosing what to play, Sparkles picks making crafts. "Yay! Crafts!" says Ballet Cat, until she has second thoughts. She loves to leap and dance, and leaping with scissors is not a good idea. Then, Sparkles suggests checkers. "Yes! Checkers!" says Ballet Cat. But then she decides that their dance kicks might knock over the checkerboard. What about selling lemonade? "The lemonade will splash when we spin," says Ballet Cat. There seems to be only one activity that goes with leaping, kicking, and spinning. "We could play ballet," suggests Sparkles unenthusiastically. The problem is, they play ballet every day, and Ballet Cat is slow in noticing that Sparkles is not at all interested. Sparkles is acting glum and has a "secret secret," namely that he sometimes does not like ballet. He is afraid that revealing this fact will mean they are no longer best friends. But Ballet Cat has a secret of her own. There is something that she loves even more than ballet: Sparkles. In the last panel, they are happily playing checkers. This early reader has simple, vivacious cartoon artwork done in inks with digital enhancements. Shea's signature style and bright bold colors add to the fun. Although the text is somewhat sophisticated and the dialogue is entirely in word balloons, the humor and theme of friendship and sharing will have broad appeal beyond the beginning reader set. Great Start to a New Beginning Reader Series By Annette Lamb BALLET CAT: THE TOTALLY SECRET SECRET by Bob Shea is the first book in a charming new series for beginning readers aged 6 through 8.After discussing activity options like making crafts and playing checkers, Ballet Cat and Sparkles the Pony decide to dance. However when Sparkles the Pony becomes sad, the two friends share secrets that make them both feel better.Shea cleverly weaves assistance for beginning readers into his adorable story. For instance, changes in the font size help young readers better understand the nuances of the plot. In addition, many new words are repeated throughout the story providing opportunities for practice. The use of speech bubbles makes it clear to the reader, who is saying, what. The simple use of lines and colors will be welcomed by children who are easily distracted by complex illustrations.Librarians seeking books for beginning readers will look forward to many more Ballet Cat books in the future. Hillyer, II Title: Ballet Cat: The Totally Secret SecretAuthor: Bob SheaPublisher: Disney Book Group (Hyperion)Year: 2015Pages: 56[Disclaimer: I was provided an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for my fair review of this book. I was in no way compensated or asked to write a positive review. I was asked to write a minimum number of words and to be honest. Done. The copy I read and reviewed was prepared for NOOK via Adobe Digital Editions.]This is a short book that is highly enjoyable both for it's delightful artwork and for it's whimsical storyline about two friends learning about compromise, friendship, and honesty. It's a simple enough book to read and understand from an author who has demonstrated an ability to write stories that make connections with young readers in a variety of situations (see Dinosaur vs. series).I think it is a hard lesson to learn, as humans, that real friendship is a difficult water to navigate precisely because it entails things we'd rather not think about--things like compromise and honesty. Children seem to understand these things, but I think even children tend to get caught up in the mayhem of 'one-upism'. I see this a lot in special education where children often come from such environments where family or economic struggles obscure these things for one reason or another. I have no explanation for why it seems to be so, but in my experience working in special education I see a tendency among my students towards selfishness and an unwillingness to compromise even in the smallest areas of social interaction. It could be their particular diagnosis; it could be environmental. Others can tell us why, I'm concerned that it is so and that the classroom becomes a training ground where these things--not taught in other environments--are learned and perpetuated.Ballet Cat has it all worked out and seems to push towards playing 'ballet' every day: "We play ballet every day, Ballet Cat," grumbles Sparkles the Sparkle Pony. Then Sparkle engages, less than enthusiastically in Ballet play until he simply can take it no more and slouches to the floor in despair. He is sad, frustrated, and defeated and has to muster up the courage to tell Ballet Cat the truth that 'Sometimes [he doesn't] want to play ballet!' His other fear is that in telling the truth to Ballet Cat he might lose his friend. In the end, however, Ballet Cat is a gracious friend and reveals to Sparkle Pony that he is more important to her than playing Ballet every day. (I'm using 'he' and 'she' carefully since it could be that Ballet Cat and Sparkle Pony are not, in fact, 'she' and 'he'. I don't think the identity of their sex is of particular importance in the story.)The author makes it clear that friendship involves two things: compromise and honesty. Ballet Cat must learn to compromise; Sparkle Pony must risk friendship by being perfectly honest. It's also important to learn that we can have differing opinions, differing likes, differing opinions and that in the end these differences, and our honesty about these differences, do not have to spoil a good friendship. This is a helpful book and I think it would serve its purpose well in the midst of a classroom and especially in a special education classroom such as mine.The only problems I had with the book are 1) that I didn't particular care for the way it rendered on my NOOK reader. It read like a comic strip. It's supposed to be 56 pages, but rendered as 30 on my NOOK. 2) I'm not sure why Sparkle Pony is called Sparkle Pony. There's nothing about the Pony that sparkles. He is covered with three giant polka dots, but no sparkles. Perhaps this will change, but in my review copy it was kind of strange. Otherwise, I very much like the art work and I like how the dialogue is printed in call-out boxes--which may lend itself to a reader's theater type reading of the story. The artwork is happy and, I think, conveys the proper emotive feel at just the right times. The color palette is simple, but captivating.Really I like this book very much, exceptions noted, and will most certainly purchase a copy for my classroom. It is designed for younger readers--the inside cover says ages 6-8, grades 1-3. That might be appropriate, but I think by the time a student is in third grade they are beginning to understand these things and this book may not be age appropriate. I might actually lower this to say Pre-K-K as it might be too 'babyish' for a second and/or third grade student. That's my opinion and it is not necessarily a statement of scientific accuracy. It's a statement of my experience working with boys that age and raising three of my own.5/5 Stars

By nanner i have loved, enjoyed and used this book in its first edition for decades. love tomatoes. love her writing. when i first moved away from sonoma county i would read it just to quell my homesickness. a classic gift for the newbies and dedicated veterans of the garden and kitchen. highly recommend it.

Michele Anna Jordan is a terrific writer and cook, she highlights both these talents in the new version of The Good Cook's Book of Tomatoes. I can't wait to get copies for all my tomato loving friends.

Rose Michele Anna Jordan has the ability to cover a single ingredient in depth and create recipes, a lot of recipes that celebrate the foodstuff without making a cliche out of it. In "Tomatoes" she presents us with exquisite recipes that celebrate the old time, comfort foods in a solid and secure way. She also gives us some new and adventurous dishes to try, ones that no doubt will become favored summer classics as time goes by. A great little book for tomato junkies, young and old.

This book does an excellent job of reinforcing every aspect of the exam By William B Wielen This book does an excellent job of reinforcing every aspect of the exam. I bought this especially for the CRAM guide. I understand all the information when studying but truthfully it's the details that start to fade. The CRAM guide is like one huge flash card and for me it works to churn up the details just before the test. It is perfect... 6 pages of condensed information giving you the big picture (with all the details) of what you need to pass the test. The software covers everything on the CRAM guide giving you an interactive way to study. After using the A+ Exam Cram this was on top of my list for the N10-006. Protect your investment (test fees) get this book.

Great Study Material By CK Great breakdown of all of the certifications subjects, I couldn't have asked for a better piece of literature on the N10-006. Furthermore, they key distilled facts are highlighted throughout the book and some are included on 2 cheat sheets that I would carry everywhere with me. The reason I bought this book is because after a long while of studying there was still things I was iffy on, and it really gave me a better glance at what was on the exam. I'm not saying this alone Is a one and only to pass right away, because the Network+ takes some studying and thorough knowledge.What I did Is take the complete list of exam objectives and go over it a few weeks before the test after all my studying using Videos, reading this book and certain websites, and writing... a lot of writing. I made a flash card out of every bullet pointed objective I needed a thorough go over with. For example I made a card with a table that listed information such as speed, medium, switching method etc of WAN technologies. Just a method that works for me! Each chapter also has a series of questions before and after to gauge your understanding of each section. I love practice questions, these help worlds with making sure you know whats what.The book also comes with quiz software and a 10% voucher. The quiz software can me tuned to be made into a certification like scenario which I highly enjoyed because It gave me the final push of confidence to schedule my exam and take it. It allows you to select a number of questions from a bank and have X amount of time to complete it, then it is graded similarly to the style of CompTIA's exams 100-900 Points. So I would set It up to be exact. 85 questions, 90 minutes to do it, unfortunately there are no scenarios so get some degree of familiarity with the hands on stuff.I passed my exam and this was the last medium I used to study, I highly recommended it to anyone taking the Network+ as it provides a good comb through of every exam topic without getting overly in depth.My entire regimine to pass was as follows:-Network+ study videos. Id listen in the car, at work, in the shower, you name it.-Hardcore note taking and internet searching of all objectives-Thoroughly reading this book and taking even more notes from it-Studying the "Cram Sheets" provided, and oh yea, more notes. Study all these notes.-Practice exams and quizzes, til you hate them. Write every one down you get wrong and what makes it right. The one in this book is great!-I had sticky notes of port numbers and other information at my desk at work, and fridge at home Lol-Self made small networking lab-Oh and more notes.If you are reading this chances are you might go take the test yourself so good luck!

About the Author Marilyn Mele has lived with and trained dogs for most of her life. She has been a private training coach for more than three decades, helping pet owners achieve their training goals with the family dog. She competes with her own dogs in AKC dog sports and has earned multiple championships and titles on several different breeds. She also trains therapy dogs and service dogs. Sharing her coaching skill with a growing online community of dog owners has given her an incredible opportunity to help many more people reach their goals. The author now lives on a small farm in the Foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains in East Tennessee with her seven dogs, two horses, two cats and a flock of chickens.

By Kim Leach Marilyn Mele writes about Corey, “It wasn’t like him to just refuse for no reason.” That statement hit me like a ton of bricks.My high-drive agility-crazed Border Collie Fitzgerald had recently started putting himself in the car after running exercises in agility class. Fitzgerald has developed noise phobia. My classmates and I passed his behavior off as more fear of the passing traffic (which seemed full of loud motorcycles and trucks with the warming weather).However, after reading Corey’s amazing story, I felt that Fitzgerald was trying to tell me something, and I needed to listen. We started with blood work at his vet office which came back perfect. We then visited a canine chiropractor who found several sore spots in my boy’s neck and back along with a lot of muscle tension. We then visited a vet who specializes in physical therapy who found a sore spot above an elbow. During this palpitation by the vet, the only discomfort sign that Fitzgerald showed was dilation of his pupils.After, 3 chiropractic adjustments, the addition of the supplement Dasuquin to his diet, and massages after agility practice, Fitzgerald is no longer running to the car after an exercise and is eager to run again.This book is a wonderful reminder to all pet parents and parents of children as well. If your pet’s or child’s behavior suddenly changes, LISTEN! They are trying to tell you something. Always look for a medical explanation first. Young children and pets want to please. If they act out or behave in an unexpected manner, dig deeper and look for the hidden cause.Thumbs up to Marilyn and Corey for helping me to get Fitzgerald back on track. Love you!

West After meeting this adorable, spunky, and beautiful little dog, I was very curious to read about his journey back to health after his devastating illness.This book was a wonderful read, written from the heart, and Corey's spirit shone through on every page. Marilyn's determination, and dedication to his recovery was deeply moving, and the fact that neither of them ever gave up was very uplifting and inspirational. I have already recommended this book to several of my dog-loving friends. Marilyn's dedication to her dogs clearly knows no bounds.
