3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An informative guide to advanced iOS programming By Just me Being an iOS developer, I bought this book to get a deeper understanding of advanced iOS programming skills. I have been able to learn the ropes and create functional iOS apps, using Erica Sadun’s other books and the web. While the web is a wonderful place to absorb things, with a myriad of sources, code, advice, etc to help you get started, it simply is not organized well enough for exposure to unknown topics. You would have to know what to search for first. The Gourmet iOS Developer’s Cookbook is perfect for that, a great reference source, with excellent organization for quickly reviewing and learning a particular intricacy of iOS. This guidebook or cookbook will get you started on a particular topic which can then be further explored using the documentation available on the web. While clearly written, it is not meant for beginning coders, as you should have some programming experience before tackling the topics. But it is perfect for looking up specific topics and problem solutions related to your projects. Each chapter is dedicated to a single iOS feature, with lots of code examples, clear explanations, and exercises. The chapters give you more than enough information to offer a good understanding of the concepts, and will give you the terms to do effective web searches, should you wish to dig deeper. Working on projects with unfamiliar ground, you will most likely do that.Organization is in chapters, each covering one topic. It begins with Media, follows with Dynamic Typography, and then with Text Kit. Continuing with Attributed Strings and Document Containers, it is followed by Animation, and Dynamic Animators. Chapter 7 is Presentations, and follows with Shape Magic. Adaptive Deployment is a welcome chapter, as is Development Helpers. All chapters are well fleshed out, with multiple pages covering each topic in detail.Advanced iOS programmers may find themselves already comfortable with the subjects, having touched upon them in their professional work. But for intermediate coders, this reference book, with its detailed recipes and examples for getting the job done, makes a great addition to a coding library. You will find it to be an indispensable tool.Included at the end, is A Taste of Swift. While not meant to be a comprehensive guide to Swift, it does offer the reader quite a bit of practical info regarding Apple’s new language, how to implement it, and how to use it with Objective C.If I had to nitpick, there are some things that could be better. As much as I like Erica Sadun, her writing can be a bit dry, to be expected with reference manuals. And everything is done in grayscale, making it a bit hard on the eyes. It is not the sort of book you read for pleasure. The information is quite condensed and assumes you already have a decent grasp of iOS coding and best practices. It can be a bit difficult to read, as the text lacks the warmth and humor of other books. For an intermediate coder, it’s best to tackle and absorb each chapter, work with the code, and perhaps branch out to other sources to solidify that information. The Gourmet iOS Developer’s Cookbook blends well the practical and theoretical, with lots of examples and recipes, to give the reader a strong feel for the advanced subject matter. I highly recommend this text, and like other good reference manuals, will pull it off the shelf regularly, to solve problems and add new features to future iOS projects.

Very useful book on advanced iOS programming, provides a wealth of knowledge on some high end topics By JP Let me start by confessing th I have received this book for free in return to provide honest reviews. Below is my detailed review of the book outlining its strengths and gaps.I will start by emphasizing that this book is not for somebody who has just got their feet into iOS programming, rather for developers already possessing iOS programming knowledge and want to learn some advanced topics like Image processing, Bar Code processing, Animation and Text processing. The book is very organized into a separate chapter(in some cases two) to cover each topic. I will split my review per topic to be more pristine.MediaThis the first chapter in the book and has very good explanation about Bar code processing, Speech processing and Audio/Video framework. This chapter starts with basics about each topics and goes into depth with some real world examples which immensely helps us understand with ease. It does a good job about explaining how we can leverage the APIs to develop some powerful applications. In addition lucid explanation of the APIs, the author has done a great job of giving a great introduction(yet resounding) about the subject itself. What I mean by it is, for example, a great deal of effort has been put in to explain what are various types of Bar codes and how they are interpreted and processed in real life. For me such an knowledge imparting via this book has a added a lot of value and also will help in how I approach my app development using the APIs.Typography and TextKitAgain the author has done a commendable job in explaining how typography is handled by iOS and also how to develop applications using the powerful TextKit API. It covers at great length on how to leverage the APIs provided by Apple and develop applications that provide great text presentations and interactions. Other thing that I really like is, how the author outlined various issues that you would run into in certain use cases and also provide the relevant design solutions(or workarounds in some cases), and also things which should not be done & not possible with the framework. I would recommend reading this chapter at length if your app has lot of text presentation or thinking of developing one on the same lines.Animation and Dynamic AnimatorsAnybody who has the knowledge of how animation works or ever dealt with animations programmatically would understand the complexity involved in it. This book has good two chapters dedicated to animations, starting with iOS framework animation basics and covering some complex use cases.Transition animations, Shadow effects, Dealing with animations at runtime are the few topics that I am bringing to the forefront as part of the review on these chapters as they are most often used in rich UI applications. The Dynamic Animators is the chapter which has covered some advanced animation APIs and techniques, that gives a good head start for any aspiring game developer or someone with interest in developing Biological anatomy applications. With that said, I definitely see an improvement in presentation of the content in the later chapter. I had to read some portions of the chapter multiple times to understand what the author is trying to present, would have appreciated if it was more generalized (by eliminating technical jargon) for easier understanding of the reader. Again, this is just my observation in accordance to the way the preceding chapters were presented. If you are a coveted game developer, these two chapters my just help you get your feet with animation in iOS and may want to refer to other books that are primarily on Game development in iOS.PresentationsI would like to appreciate the author for dedicating a chapter for this topic as it primarily deals with the UI interaction elements (other than standard elements like Buttons, Text elements and so on) like Alerts, Popovers and Bubbles and Presentations like Text blur effects and Animating effects to your view. It not only covers the technical aspects but also the best practices and standards on how to use them and also what is apt given the use case. I would definitely recommend reading and having this chapters a reference while designing your Application UI.Shape MagicThis chapter primarily deals with drawing of circles and shapes using UIBezier path Object and also explains how to present shaped buttons and Image presentations. It is a nice addition to the book as you do not have to wonder about how to you present a rounded Image or Button, or do not have to struggle with searches on the internet about how to draw shapes without knowing the basics of the concepts behind them.Adaptive DeploymentAs the name speaks for itself, the chapter's main focus is developing and deploying of applications to several screen sizes and resolutions. It very well details various points and design principles that a developers should keep in mind to avoid lateral problems with the release of the applications. It very well explains about icon sizes for various screen resolutions, Launch images for the applications, create Images from PDFs and how to design and develop split screen apps for different orientations.I would have liked it with more generalalized examples to simplify the understanding, especially topics like Traits and other topics. This chapter is again a very useful addition which would be of immense help in avoiding/reducing your app release problems.Development HelpersThis chapter is in general introduction and orientation towards development/software engineering practices. It covers things like writing your utility functions or project to improve reusability and maintainability, generating test data, simulating real world scenarios in your application, code commenting and other best practice. Another nice addition to give a comprehensiveness and make a quality material.SwiftThere is a small chapter dedicated for orientation towards Apple's new Swift programming language. The author has made an effort to introduce the reader to Swift and also provide some leads to Swift developer resources.ConclusionThe author has nicely organized the book and has put a lot effort to make it as succinct as possible, with an exception to two chapters. The explanation has been nicely supported by the examples, and also screen prints of the output for comparison. I strongly recommend this book if you want to learn and develop in some advanced iOS areas.I definitely recommend this book if you are a coveted advanced iOS developer or yearning to learn advanced programming techniques in iOS. The only reason i have given is because of the two chapters (I mentioned earlier) that needs some improvement in making them more easy to understand by trimming some technical jargon.

Good Flash Cards By Dan These subtraction flash cards are excellent flash cards.Do not think, for a moment, that these particular flash cards are not effective. My nieces love these flash cards, and the cards are very inexpensive. This product is made in America by the way.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. almost like a game By Nena Wow, I'm impressed with the results. My grand son is going into Kindergarten this Fall and wants to learn his math but hard to keep him involved for long. With these he will go through the entire deck, almost like a game, before 'finishing his homework' and losing interest. Amazing results make it well worth it, cannot beat the price, and they are study and will hold up for his use and that of his younger sister I am sure. Definitely recommend them.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Right Answer Worth a Penny! By Linda As a Grandma, I decided it would be "fun" to use these flash cards as a "game" for the grandkids! It was a fun way to review or relearn addition for kids ages 5-8. When a grandchild gave the correct answer I'd give them a penny which they collected and then bought their favorite candy bar! It was amusing to watch their enjoyment without them even realizing we were practicing addition! I've also used the subtraction flash cards. So, start saving your pennies!!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent ideas of unusual survival scenarios By Bush Pilot This book contains excellent ideas of unusual survival scenarios. I haven't been really in any of them, but many might well be possible. If I'm prepared is a different question. For sure it makes for a good read and maybe, one day it will indeed save my live, or even better, I can save the life of somebody else.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly Useful By FredTownWard This book is a throwback to the heady days of The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, back before the creators of that masterpiece got lazy and greedy and tried to pad their immense bank accounts by slapping their trademark on every piece of crap they could come up with, such as their nearly worthless (in part because nearly scenario free) almanacs like The Worst-Case Scenario Almanac: History and The Worst-Case Scenario Almanac: Politics. Readers get a respectable 85 scenarios in 224 pages on all sorts of topics of varying degrees of likelihood, from how to survive "someone who 'thinks outside the box' in meetings" to how to survive an earthquake or a tsunami to how to survive a zombie attack or time travel, all delivered with the same serious-with-only-the-slightest-wink attitude.About the only nit to pick is the lack of a pocketable paperback edition; in many of these scenarios you are unlikely to have access to (or room for) either a bulky hardback or a Kindle edition.

Insectivorous Plants, by Charles Darwin

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

In this addition to the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture, two well-respected New Testament scholars interpret the Gospel of John in its historical and literary setting as well as in light of the Church's doctrinal, liturgical, and spiritual tradition. They unpack the wisdom of the Fourth Gospel for the intellectual and spiritual transformation of its readers and connect the Gospel with a range of witnesses throughout the whole history of Catholicism. This volume, like each in the series, is supplemented by features designed to help readers understand the Bible more deeply and use it more effectively in teaching, preaching, evangelization, and other forms of ministry.

The Gospel of John (Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture), by Francis Martin, William M. IV Wright

From the Back Cover "This extraordinary book is a result of the rich renewal in biblical studies that has taken place in the last twenty-five years. Increasingly scholars see the importance of putting historical analysis of the scriptural texts in dialogue with theology, spirituality, and the dogmatic tradition. Francis Martin and William Wright have produced just such a reading of the Gospel of John. Their commentary is textured, smart, accessible, and spiritually alert. I would recommend it to novices and scholars alike."--Robert Barron, rector/president, Mundelein Seminary"Commentaries on John are beyond counting. But amid the many books devoted to this great Gospel, this volume stands out for its easy accessibility, academic thoroughness, and enthusiastic support of the Roman Catholic tradition, its liturgical calendar, and its teachings. Abundant fascinating sidebars draw the reader back in time to both the biblical world and the great voices of the Catholic Church. An ideal commentary for lay leaders, teachers, and priests in the Catholic tradition."--Gary M. Burge, professor of New Testament, Wheaton College and Graduate SchoolPraise for the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture"The Word of God is the source of Christian life, and the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture is an ideal tool for living our faith more deeply. This extraordinary resource feeds both the mind and the heart and should be on the shelf of every committed Catholic believer. I highly recommend it."--Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap, Archbishop of Philadelphia"When the Scripture is read in the liturgy, it is heard as a living voice. But when expounded in a commentary, it is too often read as a document from the past. This fine series unites the ancient and the contemporary by offering insight into the biblical text--verse by verse--as well as spiritual application to the lives of Christians today."--Robert Louis Wilken, University of VirginiaFor more information on the series, visit www.CatholicScriptureCommentary.com

Catholic Commentary That Focuses on the Meaning of the Text for Faith and Life By Dr Conrade Yap Since Vatican II, the Roman Catholic Church has paid a lot more attention to the rising hunger for the Word of God. While they have been venerating the Scriptures for hundreds of years, it is only after Vatican II where the focus has become sharpened. With more desire from the laity to learn to interpret and to study the Bible for themselves, there is also a need for biblical resources like commentaries that are updated for the modern masses. This is where the "Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture" comes in. What makes this unique are the following:- Rather than technicalities of the texts, it focuses on the "meaning of the text for faith and life"- The Interpretation includes perspectives from Protestants and Orthodox groups- Though the main translation is the New American Bible, there are frequent comparisons to other translations like NRSV, JB, and NIV.- Special sidebars containing biblical background (historical, literary, theological, tradition, miscellaneous writings) information- Relating Scripture to Catholic doctrine- John being a special bridge to the other gospel writers as well as the three Johannine letters and Revelation. The two Catholic theologians serve in various teaching institutions of the Church. Francis Martin is Professor Emeritus of New Testament at the Dominican House of Studies while William M Wright is Associate Professor of theology at the Catholic Church's Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Both of them writes from a Roman Catholic perspective. With ten other CCSS commentaries on the New Testament already published, this volume deals with a gospel that was described by Pope St Gregory as a "smooth, deep river in which a lamb may walk and an elephant may swim." The gospel of John is indeed profound and no one tradition or interpretation can exhaust the depth of the gospel teachings. The Introduction covers quite a bit of background, beginning with the various interpretations to authorship. Traditionally, the authorship was ascribed to John being one of the Twelve. Later opinions point to a John outside the Twelve, namely a disciple of John the Baptist. Martin and Wright are not dogmatic about this authorship. Dating the gospel to the AD 90s, attention is paid not only to the textual meaning but also the literacy structure. In other words, it is not just what the stories are but how the author chooses to tell the stories. Some literary features include "paris of opposites," "special vocabulary," "irony," "misunderstanding," double meanings, and symbolism. Like many other commentaries, the authors agree with the central focus of John wanting to write such that readers will come to believe. The volume is large, comprising 22 parts that cover the entire 21 chapters of the gospel. The outline is clear with a step by step revelation of John's plan through the book. Many commentaries focus on the seven signs of John and the seven I-AMs of Jesus. Martin and Wright still refer to them but tailor it in terms of focusing on the days of Revelation, the Faith journey of the Samaritan woman, the Bread of Life discourses, the Jerusalem debates, the Shepherd discourses, the Farewell discourses, and the various contrasting symbolism used. The commentary itself is very lively, beginning with a brief introduction of each pericope, then the biblical text, followed by a unique three part reference table.1) Some Old Testament references2) Some New Testament references3) A Catechism and/or Lectionary of the ChurchThere are colourful photos, maps, and helpful sidebars that add additional perspectives and contexts to the passages. From Augustine to the various Popes of the Church, contributions come too from Church Fathers recognized by most segments of Christianity, like John Chrysostom, St Thomas Aquinas, St Catherine of Siena, Justin Martyr and others. The small glossary of terms is too brief to be any useful. Footnotes are kept to the minimum and the suggested resources are also very limited. When reading the commentary, care needs to be taken with regards to the verse numberings. The authors remind readers that the NAB has a different numbering sequence which may cause some cross-references confusion when readers try to compare to other versions. The interpretive approach of this commentary is based on the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum) that ties interpretation with Church tradition. Non-Catholic readers may want to note that the Dei Verbum does point back to certain unique Catholicism doctrines like the Church being given the "authority to teach in their own place," referring to the Church as "holy mother Church," and the insistence on mysteries being revealed to "holy Apostles and prophets in the Holy Spirit" for the work of God.This is a commendable effort on the part of the authors trying to remain faithful to Catholic doctrine and at the same time open to non-Catholic sources. Written primarily to pastors and teachers, lay persons may find it helpful as a resource in their studies of John.Rating: 4.25 stars of 5.conradeThis book is provided to me courtesy of Baker Academic and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The authors take the Gospel of John and break it down into parts to really give an in depth look at what John was trying to tell his readers. There are lots of biblical references, historical information, and wonderful little additions from important people of faith.I have read the stories in the Gospel of John and thought I knew them well but I now feel like I have a deeper understanding and an appreciation for his words. I know that what I learned from reading this book will stay with me and help me to grow in my faith. This is a must read for all Catholics who want to go deeper into their understanding and love for Jesus.

Guidance to John from a Spiritual Master By Charles & Missy John's Gospel is a beautiful spiritual resource to those who can penetrate its profound Hellenistic symbolic and philosophic language. Fr. Francis Martin is the elder master spiritual and hermeneutical scholar of the Bible who can lead us with due reverence through this masterpiece without falling into the many pitfalls that poor theological foundations of our inquiry might present. I highly recommend this invaluable source.
