Ward The Golden Trout Wilderness is huge, over 300,000 acres, and is also the point where the lower hills to the south rise towards the majestic heights of the High Sierra mountains. It is also a land of contrasts, from dry river canyons along the Kern, to lush mountain meadows, this area has something for everyone, but almost no one goes there. Why? Because the peaks and parks just north of this area are far more popular. But with a good map, this one, you can spend days exploring the Golden Trout wilderness. I have, on more than one occasion, and still have not seen all of it. This map remains my regular companion in the area.Because of the size of the area, this map features a 1:63,360 scale, which is exactly one inch for every mile. Contour interval is 80 feet. Still, it is eminently readable, with different types of trail clearly delineated by color and all with point to point mileage. Like all Harrison maps, this one is printed on waterproof and tear resistant plastic paper, and it is sturdy enough to withstand a rigorous backpack trip. Which is pretty much all you need to truly explore this magnificent country. And don't forget your fly rod. The Golden Trout wilderness is aptly named.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. If you get lost, it's not the map By Wiliford I now have multiple Tom Harrison maps. There just isn't a better topo map that I have seen. The are made of what appears to be a plastic impregnated paper, they take a beating. The elevations, distances, water sources and terrain are well denoted. The map includes at lot of in information such as trail qualities, ranger stations, phone numbers etc. I won't own any other map for California trails.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great for trip planning! By Gunny The Tom Harrison maps each cover a lot of area and are perfect for planning your backcountry trips. Because of the large areas they cover the detail isn't very close-up so definitely not good for backcountry route finding if doing anything above class 1. If needing a map to navigate by when going cross country then get a USGS map which won't cover as much area but has much better detail. They do work well in conjuction with my gps if I stay on trail though which reduces the # of maps I have to take with me and less is always a good thing when it comes to my backpack weight. They are also waterproof which is pretty much a necessity in my opinion. Very happy with this purchase for what I use it for...trip planning.
