Tirades and threats. Hyperbole and deception. Changing landscapes and immutable opinions. Living traditions and dead animals. The conflicts that rage around the wild horses of the Atlantic coast can be loud, confusing, and downright vicious. Wild horses have lived on these barrier islands for hundreds of years, and many people would like to see them remain. Horse advocates and horse detractors alike turn to research to support their claims, but often reach different conclusions from the same information.

Engaging the reader at every turn of the page, Bonnie Gruenberg frequently breaks new ground as she separates fact from myth and exposes the roots of issues for the reader to consider. She does not flinch from probing questions: Are these horses wild or feral? Native or exotic? Were Chincoteague Ponies used in bioweapons research? Did the U.S. Coast Guard patrol East Coast beaches with Western mustangs in WWII? How does the condition of lactating mares predict environmental health? She weaves a story of ancient origins and current events, hard science and fiery passion. The result is the most comprehensive and factual reference on the wild horses of the Atlantic coast. Foreword by Don Höglund, MS, DVM • Author of Nobody’s Horses >

"To say I am impressed is an understatement. This is an in-depth read not to be missed by serious wild horse enthusiasts. While the collection of archival photos is a treat, Gruenberg's own photos are second to none." Victoria Tollman • Executive Director, Equus Survival Trust "It is the most impressive work about wild horses that I have ever read. I am in awe." Karen McCalpin • Executive Director, Corolla Wild Horse Fund "It is comprehensive, a stellar piece of research, and simply fascinating to read." Steve Edwards • Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney, Isle of Wight Co., Va. • Wild Horse Rehabilitator “I am mightily impressed . . . with your scholarship and thoroughness.” —Jay F. Kirkpatrick, PhD Director, Science and Conservation Center, ZooMontana

Fascinating and Thorough: A must have for your Equine Library By T.Fen As a long time fan of Hoofprints in the Sand: Wild Horses of the Atlantic Coast, the Author Bonnie Urquhart Gruenberg, and a die hard horse enthusiast I was excited about the release of this impressive book. This book goes much farther than "Hoofprints," and is extremely thorough with detailed maps, historical and current photographs and illustrations. I learned much reading it and was gripped by new and fascinating details that took me into the wild herds. It is excellent for the horse fan, the researcher, for the imagination filled gifted child, and all of us fascinated with wild herds and everything equine. The history of the herds, the methods of population control, and the behavior of wild horses deeply fascinates the reader. In some ways this is better than being there because you are taken up close and personal to the habitat of the horses. Getting up close and personal is something you would not and should not do while visiting the horses in the flesh. I plan on going to visit some of the areas mentioned in the book in the future, but while I'm not there this book definitely bridges the gap beautifully!

In-Depth Read Not to be Missed By Victoria Tollman Bonnie Gruenberg has done a fabulous job of researching and presenting the dilemma of various wild horse populations on the Eastern Seaboard. She quite rightly points out, one size does not fit all when it comes to wild herd management, nor does being labeled an "expert" mean an evaluation was accurate or unbiased. I applaud the author's courage and tenacity to dig deep enough to see and present the whole picture for the read to consider.Lastly, while the collection of archival photos is a treat, Gruenberg's own photos are second to none. Crisp, artistic and insightful - and most importantly respectful. Because she took pains not to intrude on the horses, Gruenberg was able to record honest snippets in the life of wild horses.Nicely put into one volume, this is an in-depth read not to be missed by serious wild horse enthusiasts.Victoria Tollman, Executive DirectorEquus Survival Trust (horse breed conservation)www.Equus-Survival-Trust.org

By WDB Bonnie brings to light the truths of our eastern wild horse populations in a way that even the layman can understand. The book is an easy, concise read, tremendously insightful, and fabulously educational. A book written without bias, and yet shows the author's tremendous love of the equine populations living in our east coast herds, their histories, and the many controversies plaguing them today and throughout the ages. This book will be a reference for generations to come.A long time admirer and lover of Chincoteague, I learned a tremendous amount, information far beyond the myth and legends surrounding those and other east coast herds. This book delves deeper into the history and truths of our east coast herds than any prior book written, and is written so well I would recommend it to everyone!Thank you, Bonnie, for your time and sharing with us your talent in such a memorable way!
